An adaptive heavy ball method for ill-posed inverse problems

In this paper we consider ill-posed inverse problems, both linear and nonlinear, by a heavy ball method in which a strongly convex regularization function is incorporated to detect the feature of the sought solution. We develop ideas on how to adaptively choose the step-sizes and the momentum coefficients to achieve acceleration over the Landweber-type method. We then analyze the method and establish its regularization property when it is terminated by the discrepancy principle. Various numerical results are reported which demonstrate the superior performance of our method over the Landweber-type method by reducing substantially the required number of iterations and the computational time.

Multi-Satellite Cooperative Networks: Joint Hybrid Beamforming and User Scheduling Design

In this paper, we consider a cooperative communication network where multiple low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites provide services to multiple ground users (GUs) cooperatively at the same time and on the same frequency. The multi-satellite cooperation has great potential in extending communication coverage and increasing spectral efficiency. Considering that the on-board radio-frequency circuit resources and computation resources on each satellite are restricted, we aim to propose a low-complexity yet efficient multi-satellite cooperative transmission framework. Specifically, we first propose a hybrid beamforming method consisting of analog beamforming for beam alignment and digital beamforming for interference mitigation. Then, to establish appropriate connections between the satellites and GUs, we propose a heuristic user scheduling algorithm which determines the connections according to the total spectral efficiency increment of the multi-satellite cooperative network. Next, considering the intrinsic connection between beamforming and user scheduling, a joint hybrid beamforming and user scheduling (JHU) scheme is proposed to dramatically improve the performance of the multi-satellite cooperative network. In addition to the single-connection scenario, we also consider the multi-connection case using the JHU scheme. Extensive simulations conducted over different LEO satellite constellations and across various GU locations demonstrate the superiority of the proposed schemes in both overall and per-user spectral efficiencies.

A CCBM-based generalized GKB iterative regularization algorithm for inverse Cauchy problems

This paper examines inverse Cauchy problems that are governed by a kind of elliptic partial differential equation. The inverse problems involve recovering the missing data on an inaccessible boundary from the measured data on an accessible boundary, which is severely ill-posed. By using the coupled complex boundary method (CCBM), which integrates both Dirichlet and Neumann data into a single Robin boundary condition, we reformulate the underlying problem into an operator equation. Based on this new formulation, we study the solution existence issue of the reduced problem with noisy data. A Golub-Kahan bidiagonalization (GKB) process together with Givens rotation is employed for iteratively solving the proposed operator equation. The regularizing property of the developed method, called CCBM-GKB, and its convergence rate results are proved under a posteriori stopping rule. Finally, a linear finite element method is used for the numerical realization of CCBM-GKB. Various numerical experiments demonstrate that CCBM-GKB is a kind of accelerated iterative regularization method, as it is much faster than the classic Landweber method.

Streaming Algorithms for Graph k-Matching with Optimal or Near-Optimal Update Time

We present streaming algorithms for the graph $k$-matching problem in both the insert-only and dynamic models. Our algorithms, with space complexity matching the best upper bounds, have optimal or near-optimal update time, significantly improving on previous results. More specifically, for the insert-only streaming model, we present a one-pass algorithm with optimal space complexity $O(k^2)$ and optimal update time $O(1)$, that with high probability computes a maximum weighted $k$-matching of a given weighted graph. The update time of our algorithm significantly improves the previous upper bound of $O(\log k)$, which was derived only for $k$-matching on unweighted graphs. For the dynamic streaming model, we present a one-pass algorithm that with high probability computes a maximum weighted $k$-matching in $O(Wk^2 \cdot \mbox{polylog}(n)$ space and with $O(\mbox{polylog}(n))$ update time, where $W$ is the number of distinct edge weights. Again the update time of our algorithm improves the previous upper bound of $O(k^2 \cdot \mbox{polylog}(n))$. This algorithm, when applied to unweighted graphs, gives a streaming algorithm on the dynamic model whose space and update time complexities are both near-optimal. Our results also imply a streaming approximation algorithm for maximum weighted $k$-matching whose space complexity matches the best known upper bound with a significantly improved update time.

Towards the Better Ranking Consistency: A Multi-task Learning Framework for Early Stage Ads Ranking

Dividing ads ranking system into retrieval, early, and final stages is a common practice in large scale ads recommendation to balance the efficiency and accuracy. The early stage ranking often uses efficient models to generate candidates out of a set of retrieved ads. The candidates are then fed into a more computationally intensive but accurate final stage ranking system to produce the final ads recommendation. As the early and final stage ranking use different features and model architectures because of system constraints, a serious ranking consistency issue arises where the early stage has a low ads recall, i.e., top ads in the final stage are ranked low in the early stage. In order to pass better ads from the early to the final stage ranking, we propose a multi-task learning framework for early stage ranking to capture multiple final stage ranking components (i.e. ads clicks and ads quality events) and their task relations. With our multi-task learning framework, we can not only achieve serving cost saving from the model consolidation, but also improve the ads recall and ranking consistency. In the online A/B testing, our framework achieves significantly higher click-through rate (CTR), conversion rate (CVR), total value and better ads-quality (e.g. reduced ads cross-out rate) in a large scale industrial ads ranking system.

The $p$-Laplacian overdetermined problem on Riemannian manifolds

In this paper, we study the overdetermined problem for the $p$-Laplacian equation on complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. We prove that the regularity results of weak solutions of the $p$-Laplacian equation and obtain some integral identities. As their applications, we give the proof of the $p$-Laplacian overdetermined problem and obtain some well known results such as the Heintze-Karcher inequality and the Soap Bubble Theorem.

Joint Hybrid Beamforming and User Scheduling for Multi-Satellite Cooperative Networks

In this paper, we consider a cooperative communication network where multiple satellites provide services for ground users (GUs) (at the same time and on the same frequency). The communication and computational resources on satellites are usually restricted and the satellite-GU link determination affects the communication performance significantly when multiple satellites provide services for multiple GUs in a collaborative manner. Therefore, considering the limitation of the on-board radio-frequency chains, we first propose a hybrid beamforming method consisting of analog beamforming for beam alignment and digital beamforming for interference mitigation. Then, to establish appropriate connections between satellites and GUs, we propose a heuristic user scheduling algorithm which determines the connections according to the total spectral efficiency (SE) increment of the multi-satellite cooperative network. Next, a joint hybrid beamforming and user scheduling scheme is proposed to dramatically improve the performance of the multi-satellite cooperative network. Moreover, simulations are conducted to compare the proposed schemes with representative baselines and analyze the key factors influencing the performance of the multi-satellite cooperative network. It is shown that the proposed joint beamforming and user scheduling approach can provide 47.2% SE improvement on average as compared with its non-joint counterpart.

A Fundamental Tradeoff Among Storage, Computation, and Communication for Distributed Computing over Star Network

Coded distributed computing can alleviate the communication load by leveraging the redundant storage and computation resources with coding techniques in distributed computing. In this paper, we study a MapReduce-type distributed computing framework over star topological network, where all the workers exchange information through a common access point. The optimal tradeoff among the normalized number of the stored files (storage load), computed intermediate values (computation load) and transmitted bits in the uplink and downlink (communication loads) are characterized. A coded computing scheme is proposed to achieve the Pareto-optimal tradeoff surface, in which the access point only needs to perform simple chain coding between the signals it receives, and information-theretical bound matching the surface is also provided.

Derivative Descendants and Ascendants of Binary Cyclic Codes, and Derivative Decoding

This paper defines cyclic and minimal derivative descendants (DDs) of an extended cyclic code from the derivative of the Mattson-Solomon polynomials, respectively. First, it demonstrates that the cyclic DDs are the same extended cyclic code. It allows us to perform soft-decision decoding for extended cyclic codes based on their cyclic DDs. Then, it proves that the minimal DDs are equivalent codes. It also allows us to perform soft-decision decoding based on the minimal DDs with permutations. Simulation results show that our proposed derivative decoding can be close to the maximum likelihood decoding for certain extended cyclic codes, including some extended BCH codes.

An AFDM-Based Integrated Sensing and Communications

This paper considers an affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM)-based integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system, where the AFDM waveform is used to simultaneously carry communications information and sense targets. To realize AFDM-based sensing functionality, two parameter estimation methods are designed to process echoes in the time domain and the discrete affine Fourier transform (DAFT) domain, respectively. It allows us to decouple delay and Doppler shift in the fast time axis and can maintain good sensing performance even in large Doppler shift scenarios. Numerical results verify the effectiveness of our proposed AFDM-based system in high mobility scenarios.

Optimization of Forcemyography Sensor Placement for Arm Movement Recognition

How to design an optimal wearable device for human movement recognition is vital to reliable and accurate human-machine collaboration. Previous works mainly fabricate wearable devices heuristically. Instead, this paper raises an academic question: can we design an optimization algorithm to optimize the fabrication of wearable devices such as figuring out the best sensor arrangement automatically? Specifically, this work focuses on optimizing the placement of Forcemyography (FMG) sensors for FMG armbands in the application of arm movement recognition. Firstly, based on graph theory, the armband is modeled considering sensors' signals and connectivity. Then, a Graph-based Armband Modeling Network (GAM-Net) is introduced for arm movement recognition. Afterward, the sensor placement optimization for FMG armbands is formulated and an optimization algorithm with greedy local search is proposed. To study the effectiveness of our optimization algorithm, a dataset for mechanical maintenance tasks using FMG armbands with 16 sensors is collected. Our experiments show that using only 4 sensors optimized with our algorithm can help maintain a comparable recognition accuracy to using all sensors. Finally, the optimized sensor placement result is verified from a physiological view. This work would like to shed light on the automatic fabrication of wearable devices considering downstream tasks, such as human biological signal collection and movement recognition. Pruned Collapsed Projection-Aggregation Decoding of Reed-Muller Codes

The paper proposes to decode Reed-Muller (RM) codes by projecting onto only a few subspaces such that the number of projections is significantly reduced. It reveals that the probability that error pairs are canceled simultaneously in two different projections is determined by their intersection size. Then, correlation coefficient which indicates the intersection size of two subspaces in a collection is introduced for collecting subspaces. Simulation results show that our proposed approach with a small number of projections onto collected subspaces performs close to the original approach.

Optimal Streaming Algorithms for Graph Matching

We present parameterized streaming algorithms for the graph matching problem in both the dynamic and the insert-only models. For the dynamic streaming model, we present a one-pass algorithm that, with high probability, computes a maximum-weight $k$-matching of a weighted graph in $\tilde{O}(Wk^2)$ space and that has $\tilde{O}(1)$ update time, where $W$ is the number of distinct edge weights and the notation $\tilde{O}()$ hides a poly-logarithmic factor in the input size. For the insert-only streaming model, we present a one-pass algorithm that runs in $O(k^2)$ space and has $O(1)$ update time, and that, with high probability, computes a maximum-weight $k$-matching of a weighted graph. The space complexity and the update-time complexity achieved by our algorithms for unweighted $k$-matching in the dynamic model and for weighted $k$-matching in the insert-only model are optimal. A notable contribution of this paper is that the presented algorithms {\it do not} rely on the apriori knowledge/promise that the cardinality of \emph{every} maximum-weight matching of the input graph is upper bounded by the parameter $k$. This promise has been a critical condition in previous works, and lifting it required the development of new tools and techniques.

Near-Optimal Algorithms for Point-Line Covering Problems

We study fundamental point-line covering problems in computational geometry, in which the input is a set $S$ of points in the plane. The first is the Rich Lines problem, which asks for the set of all lines that each covers at least $λ$ points from $S$, for a given integer parameter $λ\geq 2$; this problem subsumes the 3-Points-on-Line problem and the Exact Fitting problem, which -- the latter -- asks for a line containing the maximum number of points. The second is the NP-hard problem Line Cover, which asks for a set of $k$ lines that cover the points of $S$, for a given parameter $k \in \mathbb{N}$. Both problems have been extensively studied. In particular, the Rich Lines problem is a fundamental problem whose solution serves as a building block for several algorithms in computational geometry. For Rich Lines and Exact Fitting, we present a randomized Monte Carlo algorithm that achieves a lower running time than that of Guibas et al.'s algorithm [Computational Geometry 1996], for a wide range of the parameter $λ$. We derive lower-bound results showing that, for $λ=Ω(\sqrt{n \log n})$, the upper bound on the running time of this randomized algorithm matches the lower bound that we derive on the time complexity of Rich Lines in the algebraic computation trees model. For Line Cover, we present two kernelization algorithms: a randomized Monte Carlo algorithm and a deterministic algorithm. Both algorithms improve the running time of existing kernelization algorithms for Line Cover. We derive lower-bound results showing that the running time of the randomized algorithm we present comes close to the lower bound we derive on the time complexity of kernelization algorithms for Line Cover in the algebraic computation trees model.

Qubit dynamics with classical noise

We study the evolution of a qubit evolving according to the Schrödinger equation with a Hamiltonian containing noise terms, modeled by random diagonal and off-diagonal matrix elements. We show that the noise-averaged qubit density matrix converges to a final state, in the limit of large times $t.$ The convergence speed is polynomial in $1/t$, with a power depending on the regularity of the noise probability density and its low frequency behaviour. We evaluate the final state explicitly. We show that in the regimes of weak and strong off-diagonal noise, the process implements the dephasing channel in the energy- (localized) and the delocalized basis, respectively.

Tethered capsule en face optical coherence tomography for imaging Barrett's esophagus in unsedated patients

Detection of Barrett's esophagus (BE) at points of care outside the endoscopy suite may improve screening access and reduce esophageal adenocarcinoma mortality. Tethered capsule optical coherence tomography (OCT) can volumetrically image esophageal mucosa and detect BE in unsedated patients. We investigated ultrahigh-speed tethered capsule, swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) in unsedated patients, improved device design, developed procedural techniques, measured how capsule contact and longitudinal pullback non-uniformity affect coverage, and assessed patient toleration. OCT was performed in 16 patients prior to endoscopic surveillance/treatment. Unsedated patients swallowed the capsule with small sips of water and the esophagus imaged by retracting the tether. Ultrahigh-speed SS-OCT at 1,000,000 A-scans/second imaged ~40cm$^2$ esophageal areas in 10 seconds with 30um transverse and 8um axial resolution. Nine patients had non-dysplastic BE, 3 had ablative treatment-naive neoplasia, and 4 had prior ablation for history of dysplasia. The capsule procedure was well tolerated. Ultrahigh-speed SS-OCT enabled the generation of cross-sectional and sub-surface en face images. BE could be rapidly identified in cross-sectional and en face images, while assessment of the gastro-esophageal junction (GEJ) required subsurface en face views. Capsule esophageal contact was worse in long-segment BE and sliding hiatal hernia, and longitudinal image coverage was worse in short-segment BE. OCT candidate features of dysplasia are reported. Ultrahigh-speed tethered capsule SS-OCT enabled en face and cross-sectional imaging of mucosal features over wide areas. Device and procedure optimization led to improved imaging performance. Areas of BE could be readily identified, but limited capsule contact and longitudinal image coverage can yield sampling errors.

Linear-Time Parameterized Algorithms with Limited Local Resources

We propose a new (theoretical) computational model for the study of massive data processing with limited computational resources. Our model measures the complexity of reading the very large data sets in terms of the data size N and analyzes the computational cost in terms of a parameter k that characterizes the computational power provided by limited local computing resources. We develop new algorithmic techniques that implement algorithms for solving well-known computational problems on the proposed model. In particular, we present an algorithm that finds a k-matching in a general unweighted graph in time O(N + k^{2.5}) and an algorithm that constructs a maximum weighted k-matching in a general weighted graph in time O(N + k^3 log k). Both algorithms have their space complexity bounded by O(k^2).

Downsampling and Transparent Coding for Blockchain

With the development of blockchain, the huge history data limits the scalability of the blockchain. This paper proposes to downsample these data to reduce the storage overhead of nodes. These nodes keep good independency, if downsampling follows the entropy of blockchain. Moreover, it demonstrates that the entire blockchain history can be efficiently recovered through the cooperative decoding of a group of nodes like fountain codes, if reserved data over these nodes obey the soliton distribution. However, these data on nodes are uncoded (transparent). Thus, the proposed algorithm not only keeps decentralization and security, but also has good scalability in independency and recovery.
