Efficient passive measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution

The measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) possesses the highest security among all practical quantum key distribution protocols. However, existing multi-intensity decoy-state methods may cause loopholes when modulating light intensities with practical devices. In this paper, we propose a passive decoy-state MDI-QKD protocol based on a novel structure of heralded single-photon sources. It does not need to modulate the light source into different intensities and thus can avoid leaking modulation information of decoy states to eavesdroppers, enhancing the security of practical MDI-QKD. Furthermore, by combining the passive decoy states and biased basis choices, our protocol can exhibit distinct advantages compared with state-of-the art MDI-QKD schemes even when the finite key-size effect is taken into account. Therefore, our present passive decoy-state MDI-QKD seems a promising candidate for practical implementation of quantum key distributions in the near future.

Asymmetric sending or not-sending twin-field quantum key distribution in practice

Quantum key distribution (QKD) offers a secret way to share keys between legitimate users which is guaranteed by the law of quantum mechanics. Most recently, the limitation of transmission distance without quantum repeaters was broken through by twin-field QKD [Nature (London) 557, 400 (2018)]. Based on its main idea, sending or not-sending (SNS) QKD protocol was proposed [Phys. Rev. A 98, 062323 (2018)], which filled the remaining security loopholes and can tolerate large misalignment errors. In this paper, we give a more general model for SNS QKD, where the two legitimate users, Alice and Bob, can possess asymmetric quantum channels. By applying the method present in the work, the legitimate users can achieve dramatically increased key generation rate and transmission distance compared with utilizing the original symmetric protocol. Therefore, our present work represents a further step along the progress of practical QKD.

ContextVP: Fully Context-Aware Video Prediction

Video prediction models based on convolutional networks, recurrent networks, and their combinations often result in blurry predictions. We identify an important contributing factor for imprecise predictions that has not been studied adequately in the literature: blind spots, i.e., lack of access to all relevant past information for accurately predicting the future. To address this issue, we introduce a fully context-aware architecture that captures the entire available past context for each pixel using Parallel Multi-Dimensional LSTM units and aggregates it using blending units. Our model outperforms a strong baseline network of 20 recurrent convolutional layers and yields state-of-the-art performance for next step prediction on three challenging real-world video datasets: Human 3.6M, Caltech Pedestrian, and UCF-101. Moreover, it does so with fewer parameters than several recently proposed models, and does not rely on deep convolutional networks, multi-scale architectures, separation of background and foreground modeling, motion flow learning, or adversarial training. These results highlight that full awareness of past context is of crucial importance for video prediction.

Convolutional Sequence to Sequence Non-intrusive Load Monitoring

A convolutional sequence to sequence non-intrusive load monitoring model is proposed in this paper. Gated linear unit convolutional layers are used to extract information from the sequences of aggregate electricity consumption. Residual blocks are also introduced to refine the output of the neural network. The partially overlapped output sequences of the network are averaged to produce the final output of the model. We apply the proposed model to the REDD dataset and compare it with the convolutional sequence to point model in the literature. Results show that the proposed model is able to give satisfactory disaggregation performance for appliances with varied characteristics.

Short-term Load Forecasting with Deep Residual Networks

We present in this paper a model for forecasting short-term power loads based on deep residual networks. The proposed model is able to integrate domain knowledge and researchers' understanding of the task by virtue of different neural network building blocks. Specifically, a modified deep residual network is formulated to improve the forecast results. Further, a two-stage ensemble strategy is used to enhance the generalization capability of the proposed model. We also apply the proposed model to probabilistic load forecasting using Monte Carlo dropout. Three public datasets are used to prove the effectiveness of the proposed model. Multiple test cases and comparison with existing models show that the proposed model is able to provide accurate load forecasting results and has high generalization capability.

Reconfigurable vortex beam generator based on the Fourier transformation principle

A method to generate the optical vortex beam with arbitrary superposition of different orders of orbital angular momentum (OAM) on a photonic chip is proposed. The distributed Fourier holographic gratings are proposed to convert the propagating wave in waveguides to a vortex beam in the free space, and the components of different OAMs can be controlled by the amplitude and phases of on-chip incident light based on the principle of Fourier transformation. As an example, we studied a typical device composed of nine Fourier holographic gratings on fan-shaped waveguides. By scalar diffraction calculation, the OAM of the optical beam from the reconfigurable vortex beam generator can be controlled on-demand from -2nd to 2nd by adjusting the phase of input light fields, which is demonstrated numerically with the fidelity of generated optical vortex beam above 0.69. The working bandwidth of the Fourier holographic grating is about 80 nm with a fidelity above 0.6. Our work provides an feasible method to manipulate the vortex beam or detect arbitrary superposition of OAMs, which can be used in integrated photonics structures for optical trapping, signal processing, and imaging.

Substation Signal Matching with a Bagged Token Classifier

Currently, engineers at substation service providers match customer data with the corresponding internally used signal names manually. This paper proposes a machine learning method to automate this process based on substation signal mapping data from a repository of executed projects. To this end, a bagged token classifier is proposed, letting words (tokens) in the customer signal name vote for provider signal names. In our evaluation, the proposed method exhibits better performance in terms of both accuracy and efficiency over standard classifiers.

Finite temperature physics of $1D$ topological Kondo insulator: Stable Haldane phase, Emergent energy scale and Beyond

We have studied the one-dimensional $p$-wave periodic Anderson model at finite temperature with the help of the numerically exact determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulation. It is found that the topological Haldane phase established for ground-state is still stable against small thermal fluctuation and its characteristic edge magnetization develops at low temperature. Moreover, the saturated low-$T$ spin structure factor and the $\frac{1}{T}$-law of susceptibility are useful to detect the free edge spin moment, which may be relevant for experimental explorations. We have also comparatively studied the conventional $s$-wave periodic Anderson model, which helps us identify an emergent energy scale $T_{cr}$. $T_{cr}$ signals a crossover into interesting low-$T$ regime and seems to be the expected Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) coupling. Finally, the collective Kondo screening effect has been examined and it is heavily reduced at boundary, which may give a fruitful playground for novel physics beyond the well-established Haldane state and topological band insulators.

Warped cones and proper affine isometric actions of discrete groups on Banach spaces

Warped cones are metric spaces introduced by John Roe from discrete group actions on compact metric spaces to produce interesting examples in coarse geometry. We show that a certain class of warped cones $\mathcal{O}_Γ(M)$ admit a fibred coarse embedding into a $L_p$-space ($1\leq p<\infty$) if and only if the discrete group $Γ$ admits a proper affine isometric action on a $L_p$-space. This actually holds for any class of Banach spaces stable under taking Lebesgue-Bochner $L_p$-spaces and ultraproducts, e.g., uniformly convex Banach spaces or Banach spaces with nontrivial type. It follows that the maximal coarse Baum-Connes conjecture and the coarse Novikov conjecture hold for a certain class of warped cones which do not coarsely embed into any $L_p$-space for any $1\leq p<\infty$.

Biased decoy-state reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution

Without actively aligning the reference frames, the reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution (RFI-QKD) can generate secure keys even when the reference frames drift slowly. Here, we propose a new scheme on the decoy-state RFI-QKD, where the basis assignments of two legitimate parties are biased, reducing the fraction of mismatched-basis data. When accounting for statistical fluctuations under different misalignments of reference frames, we investigate the performance of biased decoy-state RFI-QKD with full parameter optimization. We also make a clear comparison between the new scheme with other practical schemes, e.g., unbiased decoy-state RFI-QKD and biased decoy-state BB84-QKD. Simulation results demonstrate that the new proposed biased decoy-state RFI-QKD can significantly improve the performance (secret key rate and secure transmission distance) of practical QKD systems.

On-chip generation and control of the vortex beam

A new method to generate and control the amplitude and phase distributions of a optical vortex beam is proposed. By introducing a holographic grating on top of the dielectric waveguide, the free space vortex beam and the in-plane guiding wave can be converted to each other. This microscale holographic grating is very robust against the variation of geometry parameters. The designed vortex beam generator can produce the target beam with a fidelity up to 0.93, and the working bandwidth is about 175 nm with the fidelity larger than 0.80. In addition, a multiple generator composed of two holographic gratings on two parallel waveguides are studied, which can perform an effective and flexible modulation on the vortex beam by controlling the phase of the input light. Our work opens a new avenue towards the integrated OAM devices with multiple degrees of optical freedom, which can be used for optical tweezers, micronano imaging, information processing, and so on.

The regularity of sonic curves for the two-dimensional Riemann problems of the nonlinear wave system of Chaplygin gas

We study the regularity of sonic curves to a two-dimensional Riemann problem for the nonlinear wave system of Chaplygin gas, which is an essential step for the global existence of solutions to the two-dimensional Riemann problems. As a result, we establish the global existence of uniformly smooth solutions in the semi-hyperbolic patches up to the sonic boundary, where the degeneracy of hyperbolicity occurs. Furthermore, we show the C^1 regularity of sonic curves.

General model for simulation of the measurement-device independent quantum key distribution

We present a general model on the simulation of the measurement-device independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD). It can be used to predict experimental observations of a MDI-QKD with linear channel loss, simulating corresponding values for the gains, the error rates in different basis, and also the final key rates. Our model can be applicable to the MDI-QKDs with whatever convex source states or using whatever coding schemes. Therefore, it is useful in characterizing and evaluating the performance of any MDI-QKD protocols, making it a valuable tool in studying the quantum key distributions.

An efficient implementation of the decoy-state measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution with heralded single-photon sources

We study the decoy-state measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution using heralded single-photon sources. This has the advantage that the observed error rate in X basis is in higher order and not so large. We calculate the key rate and transmission distance for two cases: one using only triggered events, and the other using both triggered and non-triggered events. We compare the key rates of various protocols and find that our new scheme using triggered and non-triggered events can give higher key rate and longer secure distance. Moreover, we also show the different behavior of our scheme when using different heralded single-photon sources, i.e., in poisson or thermal distribution. We demonstrate that the former can generate a relatively higher secure key rate than the latter, and can thus work more efficiently in practical quantum key distributions.

An Advanced Survey on Secure Energy-Efficient Hierarchical Routing Protocols in Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are often deployed in hostile environments, which make such networks highly vulnerable and increase the risk of attacks against this type of network. WSN comprise of large number of sensor nodes with different hardware abilities and functions. Due to the limited memory resources and energy constraints, complex security algorithms cannot be used in sensor networks. Therefore, it is necessary to balance between the security level and the associated energy consumption overhead to mitigate the security risks. Hierarchical routing protocol is more energy-efficient than other routing protocols in WSNs. Many secure cluster-based routing protocols have been proposed in the literature to overcome these constraints. In this paper, we discuss Secure Energy-Efficient Hierarchical Routing Protocols in WSNs and compare them in terms of security, performance and efficiency. Security issues for WSNs and their solutions are also discussed.

The maximal coarse Baum-Connes conjecture for spaces which admit a fibred coarse embedding into Hilbert space

We introduce a notion of fibred coarse embedding into Hilbert space for metric spaces, which is a generalization of Gromov's notion of coarse embedding into Hilbert space. It turns out that a large class of expander graphs admit such an embedding. We show that the maximal coarse Baum-Connes conjecture holds for metric spaces with bounded geometry which admit a fibred coarse embedding into Hilbert space.

Exceptional high Seebeck Coefficient and Gas-Flow-Induced Voltage in Multilayer Graphene

Monolayer graphene shows Seebeck coefficient several times and gas-flow-induced voltage twenty times higher than that of bulk graphite. Here we find that the Seebeck coefficient of multilayer graphene increases monotonically with increasing layer and reaches its peak value at hexa-layer ~77% higher than for monolayer and then decreases, although the electric resistance decreases monotonically with increasing layer. The flow-induced voltage is significantly higher in 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 layered graphene than in 1, 3, 8 layered one, against the prevailing view that it should be proportional to Seebeck coefficient. These thickness effects are also in sharp contrast to that in continuous aluminum nanofilms.
