A deep learning approach for predicting the quality of online health expert question-answering services

Currently, a growing number of health consumers are asking health-related questions online, at any time and from anywhere, which effectively lowers the cost of health care. The most common approach is using online health expert question-answering (HQA) services, as health consumers are more willing to trust answers from professional physicians. However, these answers can be of varying quality depending on circumstance. In addition, as the available HQA services grow, how to predict the answer quality of HQA services via machine learning becomes increasingly important and challenging. In an HQA service, answers are normally short texts, which are severely affected by the data sparsity problem. Furthermore, HQA services lack community features such as best answer and user votes. Therefore, the wisdom of the crowd is not available to rate answer quality. To address these problems, in this paper, the prediction of HQA answer quality is defined as a classification task. First, based on the characteristics of HQA services and feedback from medical experts, a standard for HQA service answer quality evaluation is defined. Next, based on the characteristics of HQA services, several novel non-textual features are proposed, including surface linguistic features and social features. Finally, a deep belief network (DBN)-based HQA answer quality prediction framework is proposed to predict the quality of answers by learning the high-level hidden semantic representation from the physicians' answers. Our results prove that the proposed framework overcomes the problem of overly sparse textual features in short text answers and effectively identifies high-quality answers.

Evaluation of entanglement measures by a single observable

We present observable lower bounds for several bipartite entanglement measures including entanglement of formation, geometric measure of entanglement, concurrence, convex-roof extended negativity, and G-concurrence. The lower bounds facilitate estimates of these entanglement measures for arbitrary finite-dimensional bipartite states. Moreover, these lower bounds can be calculated analytically from the expectation value of a single observable. Based on our results, we use several real experimental measurement data to get lower bounds of entanglement measures for these experimentally realized states. In addition, we also study the relations between entanglement measures.

Long distance co-propagation of quantum key distribution and terabit classical optical data channels

Quantum key distribution (QKD) generates symmetric keys between two remote parties, and guarantees the keys not accessible to any third party. Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) between QKD and classical optical communications by sharing the existing fibre optics infrastructure is highly desired in order to reduce the cost of QKD applications. However, quantum signals are extremely weak and thus easily affected by the spontaneous Raman scattering effect from intensive classical light. Here, by means of wavelength selecting and spectral and temporal filtering, we realize the multiplexing and long distance co-propagation of QKD and Terabit classical coherent optical communication system up to 80km. The data capacity is two orders of magnitude larger than the previous results. Our demonstration verifies the feasibility of QKD and classical communication to share the resources of backbone fibre links, and thus taking the utility of QKD a great step forward.

OC16-CE80: A Chinese-English Mixlingual Database and A Speech Recognition Baseline

We present the OC16-CE80 Chinese-English mixlingual speech database which was released as a main resource for training, development and test for the Chinese-English mixlingual speech recognition (MixASR-CHEN) challenge on O-COCOSDA 2016. This database consists of 80 hours of speech signals recorded from more than 1,400 speakers, where the utterances are in Chinese but each involves one or several English words. Based on the database and another two free data resources (THCHS30 and the CMU dictionary), a speech recognition (ASR) baseline was constructed with the deep neural network-hidden Markov model (DNN-HMM) hybrid system. We then report the baseline results following the MixASR-CHEN evaluation rules and demonstrate that OC16-CE80 is a reasonable data resource for mixlingual research.

We present the AP16-OL7 database which was released as the training and test data for the oriental language recognition (OLR) challenge on APSIPA 2016. Based on the database, a baseline system was constructed on the basis of the i-vector model. We report the baseline results evaluated in various metrics defined by the AP16-OLR evaluation plan and demonstrate that AP16-OL7 is a reasonable data resource for multilingual research.

Hierarchy of multipartite nonlocality in the nonsignaling scenario

We propose a hierarchy of Bell-type inequalities for arbitrary $n$-partite systems that identify the different degrees of nonlocality ranging from standard to genuine multipartite nonlocality. After introducing the definition of nonsignaling $m$-locality, we show that the observed joint probabilities in any nonsignaling $m$-local realistic models should satisfy the $(m-1)$-th Bell-type inequality. When $m=2$ the corresponding inequality reduces to the one shown in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 140404 (2014)] whose violation indicates genuine multipartite nonlocality, and when $m=n$ the corresponding inequality is just Hardy's inequality whose violation indicates standard multipartite nonlocality. Furthermore, several examples are provided to demonstrate their hierarchy of multipartite nonlocality.

Complete condition for nonzero quantum correlation in continuous variable systems

Quantum correlation provides a promising measure beyond entanglement. Here, we propose a necessary and sufficient condition for nonzero quantum correlation in continuous variable systems, which is simple and easy to perform in terms of a marker $Q_r$. In order to get this condition, we introduce continuous-variable local orthogonal bases of the operator space, which are generalized from the orthogonal basis sets in local operator space for discrete variables. Based on this, we obtain the marker $Q_r$ for all bipartite continuous variable states, and provide several examples including two-mode Gaussian and non-Gaussian states. Our result may provide a candidate for quantum correlation measures, and can be measured by designed quantum circuits.

On Summarizing Graph Streams

Graph streams, which refer to the graph with edges being updated sequentially in a form of a stream, have wide applications such as cyber security, social networks and transportation networks. This paper studies the problem of summarizing graph streams. Specifically, given a graph stream G, directed or undirected, the objective is to summarize G as S with much smaller (sublinear) space, linear construction time and constant maintenance cost for each edge update, such that S allows many queries over G to be approximately conducted efficiently. Due to the sheer volume and highly dynamic nature of graph streams, summarizing them remains a notoriously hard, if not impossible, problem. The widely used practice of summarizing data streams is to treat each element independently by e.g., hash- or sampling-based method, without keeping track of the connections between elements in a data stream, which gives these summaries limited power in supporting complicated queries over graph streams. This paper discusses a fundamentally different philosophy for summarizing graph streams. We present gLava, a probabilistic graph model that, instead of treating an edge (a stream element) as the operating unit, uses the finer grained node in an element. This will naturally form a new graph sketch where edges capture the connections inside elements, and nodes maintain relationships across elements. We discuss a wide range of supported graph queries and establish theoretical error bounds for basic queries.

Field Equation of Correlation Function of Mass Density Fluctuation for Self-Gravitating Systems

We study the mass density distribution of the Newtonian self-gravitating system. Modeling the system either as a gas in thermal equilibrium, or as a fluid in hydrostatical equilibrium, we obtain the field equation of correlation function $ξ(r)$ of the mass density fluctuation itself. It can apply to the study of galaxy clustering on Universe large scales. The observed $ξ(r)\simeq (r_0/r)^{1.7}$ follows from first principle. The equation tells that $ξ(r)$ depends on the point mass $m$ and Jeans wavelength scale $λ_{0}$, which are different for galaxies and clusters. It explains several longstanding, prominent features of the observed clustering: the profile of $ξ_{cc}(r)$ of clusters is similar to $ξ_{gg}(r)$ of galaxies but with a higher amplitude and a longer correlation length, the correlation length increases with the mean separation between clusters $r_0\simeq 0.4d$ as the observed scaling, and on very large scales $ξ_{cc}(r)$ exhibits periodic oscillations with a characteristic wavelength $\sim 120$Mpc. With a set of fixed model parameters, the solution $ξ(r)$ for galaxies and for clusters, the power spectrum, the projected, and the angular correlation function, simultaneously agree with the observational data from the surveys, such as Automatic Plate Measuring (APM), Two-degree-Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS), and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), etc.

HRank: A Path based Ranking Framework in Heterogeneous Information Network

Recently, there is a surge of interests on heterogeneous information network analysis. As a newly emerging network model, heterogeneous information networks have many unique features (e.g., complex structure and rich semantics) and a number of interesting data mining tasks have been exploited in this kind of networks, such as similarity measure, clustering, and classification. Although evaluating the importance of objects has been well studied in homogeneous networks, it is not yet exploited in heterogeneous networks. In this paper, we study the ranking problem in heterogeneous networks and propose the HRank framework to evaluate the importance of multiple types of objects and meta paths. Since the importance of objects depends upon the meta paths in heterogeneous networks, HRank develops a path based random walk process. Moreover, a constrained meta path is proposed to subtly capture the rich semantics in heterogeneous networks. Furthermore, HRank can simultaneously determine the importance of objects and meta paths through applying the tensor analysis. Extensive experiments on three real datasets show that HRank can effectively evaluate the importance of objects and paths together. Moreover, the constrained meta path shows its potential on mining subtle semantics by obtaining more accurate ranking results.

Detecting and estimating continuous-variable entanglement by local orthogonal observables

Entanglement detection and estimation are fundamental in quantum information science. Compared with discrete-variable states, for which lots of efficient entanglement detection criteria and lower bounds of entanglement measures have been proposed, the continuous-variable entanglement is much less understood. Here we shall present a family of entanglement witnesses based on continuous-variable local orthogonal observables (CVLOOs) to detect and estimate entanglement of Gaussian and non-Gaussian states, especially for bound entangled states. By choosing an optimal set of CVLOOs our entanglement witness is equivalent to the realignment criterion and can be used to detect bound entanglement of a class of 2+2 mode Gaussian states. Via our entanglement witness, lower bounds of two typical entanglement measures for arbitrary two-mode continuous-variable states are obtained.

Conformal metrics with constant curvature one and finite conical singularities on compact Riemann surfaces

A conformal metric $g$ with constant curvature one and finite conical singularities on a compact Riemann surface $Σ$ can be thought of as the pullback of the standard metric on the 2-sphere by a multi-valued locally univalent meromorphic function $f$ on $Σ\backslash \{{\rm singularities}\}$, called the {\it developing map} of the metric $g$. When the developing map $f$ of such a metric $g$ on the compact Riemann surface $Σ$ has reducible monodromy, we show that, up to some M{\" o}bius transformation on $f$, the logarithmic differential $d\,(\log\, f)$ of $f$ turns out to be an abelian differential of 3rd kind on $Σ$, which satisfies some properties and is called a {\it character 1-form of} $g$. Conversely, given such an abelian differential $ω$ of 3rd kind satisfying the above properties, we prove that there exists a unique conformal metric $g$ on $Σ$ with constant curvature one and conical singularities such that one of its character 1-forms coincides with $ω$. This provides new examples of conformal metrics on compact Riemann surfaces of constant curvature one and with singularities. Moreover, we prove that the developing map is a rational function for a conformal metric $g$ with constant curvature one and finite conical singularities with angles in $2π\,{\Bbb Z}_{>1}$ on the two-sphere.

Test of Genuine Multipartite Nonlocality Without Inequality

In this letter we propose a set of conditions on the joint probabilities as a test of genuine multipartite nonlocality without inequality. Our test is failed by all non-signaling local models in which even nonlocal correlations among some observables (not all) are allowed as long as these correlations respect the non-signaling principle. A pass of our test by a state therefore indicates that this state cannot be simulated by any non-signaling local models, i.e., the state exhibits genuine multipartite nonlocality. It turns out that all entangled symmetric n-qubit ($n \geq 3$) states pass our test and therefore are n-way nonlocal. Also we construct two Bell-type inequalities from our proposed test whose violations indicate genuine multipartite nonlocal correlations.

LPS's Criterion for Incompressible Nematic Liquid Crystal Flows

In this paper we derive LPS's criterion for the breakdown of classical solutions to the incompressible nematic liquid crystal flow, a simplified version of Ericksen-Leslie system modeling the hydrodynamic evolution of nematic liquid crystals in $\mathbb R^3$. We show that if $0<T<+\infty$} is the maximal time interval for the unique smooth solution $u\in C^\infty([0,T),\mathbb R^3)$, then $|u|+|\nabla d|\notin L^q([0,T],L^p(\mathbb R^3))$, where $p$ and $q$ safisfy the Ladyzhenskaya-Prodi-Serrin's condition: $\frac{3}{p}+\frac{2}{q}=1$ and $p\in(3,+\infty]$

All entangled pure states violate a single Bell's inequality

We show that a single Bell's inequality with two dichotomic observables for each observer, which is originated from Hardy's nonlocality proof without inequalities, is violated by all entangled pure states of a given number of particles, each of which may have a different number of energy levels. Thus Gisin's theorem is proved in its most general form from which it follows that for pure states Bell's nonlocality and quantum entanglement are equivalent.

Quantum channels that preserve the commutativity

We identify and characterize all the local quantum channels that preserves the set of classical states, i.e., does not create any quantum correlations. At first we show that the quantum correlations cannot be created from without if and only if the local quantum channel preserves the commutativity, i.e., the images of any two commuting states also commute. And then we provide an operational necessary and sufficient criterion for a known quantum channel to preserve the commutativity as well as a single observable to witness an arbitrary unknown commutativity-preserving channel. All the distance-based measures for quantum correlations, e.g., the geometric measure, are non-increasing while the quantum discord defined by von Neumann measurements can be increasing or decreasing under local commutativity-preserving channels.

Observable estimation of entanglement of formation and quantum discord for bipartite mixed quantum states

We present observable lower and upper bounds for the entanglement of formation (EOF) and quantum discord (QD), which facilitates estimates of EOF and QD for arbitrary experimental unknown states in finite-dimensional bipartite systems. These bounds can be easily obtained by a few experimental measurements on a twofold copy $\varrho\otimes\varrho$ of the mixed states. Based on our results, we use the experimental measurement data of the real experiment given by Schmid \textit{et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{101}, 260505 (2008)] to obtain the lower and upper bounds of EOF and QD for the experimental unknown state.

Quantum discord of two-qubit X-states

Quantum discord provides a measure for quantifying quantum correlations beyond entanglement and is very hard to compute even for two-qubit states because of the minimization over all possible measurements. Recently a simple algorithm to evaluate the quantum discord for two-qubit X-states is proposed by Ali, Rau and Alber [Phys. Rev. A 81, 042105 (2010)] with minimization taken over only a few cases. Here we shall at first identify a class of X-states, whose quantum discord can be evaluated analytically without any minimization, for which their algorithm is valid, and also identify a family of X-states for which their algorithm fails. And then we demonstrate that this special family of X-states provides furthermore an explicit example for the inequivalence between the minimization over positive operator-valued measures and that over von Neumann measurements.
