Quantum Graph Convolutional Neural Networks

At present, there are a large number of quantum neural network models to deal with Euclidean spatial data, while little research have been conducted on non-Euclidean spatial data. In this paper, we propose a novel quantum graph convolutional neural network (QGCN) model based on quantum parametric circuits and utilize the computing power of quantum systems to accomplish graph classification tasks in traditional machine learning. The proposed QGCN model has a similar architecture as the classical graph convolutional neural networks, which can illustrate the topology of the graph type data and efficiently learn the hidden layer representation of node features as well. Numerical simulation results on a graph dataset demonstrate that the proposed model can be effectively trained and has good performance in graph level classification tasks.

Primordial black holes and secondary gravitational waves from chaotic inflation

Chaotic inflation is inconsistent with the observational constraint at 68\% CL. Here, we show that the enhancement mechanism with a peak function in the noncanonical kinetic term not only helps the chaotic model $V(ϕ)=V_0ϕ^{1/3}$ satisfy the observational constraint at large scales but also enhances the primordial scalar power spectrum by seven orders of magnitude at small scales. The enhanced curvature perturbations can produce primordial black holes of different masses and secondary gravitational waves with different peak frequencies. We also show that the non-Gaussianities of curvature perturbations have little effect on the abundance of primordial black holes and energy density of the scalar-induced secondary gravitational waves.

Primordial black holes and secondary gravitational waves from inflationary model with a non-canonical kinetic term

With the enhancement mechanism provided by a noncanonical kinetic term with a peak, the amplitude of primordial curvature perturbations can be enhanced by seven orders of magnitude at small scales while keeping to be consistent with observations at large scales. The peak function and inflationary potential are not restricted in this mechanism. We use the Higgs model and T-model as examples to show how abundant primordial black hole dark matter with different mass and scalar induced secondary gravitational waves with different peak frequency are generated. We also show that the enhanced power spectrum for the primordial curvature perturbations and the energy density of the scalar induced secondary gravitational waves can have either a sharp peak or a broad peak. The primordial black holes with the mass around $10^{-14}-10^{-12} M_{\odot}$ produced with the enhancement mechanism can make up almost all dark matter, and the scalar induced secondary gravitational waves accompanied with the production of primordial black holes can be tested by the pulsar timing arrays and spaced based gravitational wave observatory. Therefore, the mechanism can be tested by primordial black hole dark matter and gravitational wave observations.

Design and Control of a Highly Redundant Rigid-Flexible Coupling Robot to Assist the COVID-19 Oropharyngeal-Swab Sampling

The outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) has caused mortality and morbidity worldwide. Oropharyngeal-swab (OP-swab) sampling is widely used for the diagnosis of COVID-19 in the world. To avoid the clinical staff from being affected by the virus, we developed a 9-degree-of-freedom (DOF) rigid-flexible coupling (RFC) robot to assist the COVID-19 OP-swab sampling. This robot is composed of a visual system, UR5 robot arm, micro-pneumatic actuator and force-sensing system. The robot is expected to reduce risk and free up the clinical staff from the long-term repetitive sampling work. Compared with a rigid sampling robot, the developed force-sensing RFC robot can facilitate OP-swab sampling procedures in a safer and softer way. In addition, a varying-parameter zeroing neural network-based optimization method is also proposed for motion planning of the 9-DOF redundant manipulator. The developed robot system is validated by OP-swab sampling on both oral cavity phantoms and volunteers.

Do You Live a Healthy Life? Analyzing Lifestyle by Visual Life Logging

A healthy lifestyle is the key to better health and happiness and has a considerable effect on quality of life and disease prevention. Current lifelogging/egocentric datasets are not suitable for lifestyle analysis; consequently, there is no research on lifestyle analysis in the field of computer vision. In this work, we investigate the problem of lifestyle analysis and build a visual lifelogging dataset for lifestyle analysis (VLDLA). The VLDLA contains images captured by a wearable camera every 3 seconds from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm for seven days. In contrast to current lifelogging/egocentric datasets, our dataset is suitable for lifestyle analysis as images are taken with short intervals to capture activities of short duration; moreover, images are taken continuously from morning to evening to record all the activities performed by a user. Based on our dataset, we classify the user activities in each frame and use three latent fluents of the user, which change over time and are associated with activities, to measure the healthy degree of the user's lifestyle. The scores for the three latent fluents are computed based on recognized activities, and the healthy degree of the lifestyle for the day is determined based on the scores for the latent fluents. Experimental results show that our method can be used to analyze the healthiness of users' lifestyles.

The Upper Bound on the Tensor-to-Scalar Ratio Consistent with Quantum Gravity

We consider the polynomial inflation with the tensor-to-scalar ratio as large as possible which can be consistent with the Quantum Gravity (QG) corrections and Effective Field Theory (EFT). To get a minimal field excursion $Δϕ$ for enough e-folding number $N$, the inflaton field traverses an extremely flat part of the scalar potential, which results in the Lyth bound to be violated. We get a CMB signal consistent with Planck data by numerically computing the equation of motion for inflaton $ϕ$ and using Mukhanov-Sasaki formalism for primordial spectrum. Inflation ends at Hubble slow-roll parameter $ε_1^H=1$ or $\ddot{a}=0$. Interestingly, we find an excellent practical bound on the inflaton excursion in the format $a+b{\sqrt r}$, where $a$ is a tiny real number and $b$ is at the order 1. To be consistent with QG/EFT and suppress the high-dimensional operators, we show that the concrete condition on inflaton excursion is $\frac{Δϕ}{M_{\rm Pl}} < 0.2 \times \sqrt{10}\simeq 0.632$. For $n_s=0.9649$, $N_e=55$, and $\frac{Δϕ}{M_{\rm Pl}} < 0.632$, we predict that the tensor-to-scalar ratio is smaller than 0.0012 for such polynomial inflation to be consistent with QG/EFT.

The TianQin project: current progress on science and technology

TianQin is a planned space-based gravitational wave (GW) observatory consisting of three earth orbiting satellites with an orbital radius of about $10^5~{\rm km}$. The satellites will form a equilateral triangle constellation the plane of which is nearly perpendicular to the ecliptic plane. TianQin aims to detect GWs between $10^{-4}~{\rm Hz}$ and $1~{\rm Hz}$ that can be generated by a wide variety of important astrophysical and cosmological sources, including the inspiral of Galactic ultra-compact binaries, the inspiral of stellar-mass black hole binaries, extreme mass ratio inspirals, the merger of massive black hole binaries, and possibly the energetic processes in the very early universe or exotic sources such as cosmic strings. In order to start science operations around 2035, a roadmap called the 0123 plan is being used to bring the key technologies of TianQin to maturity, supported by the construction of a series of research facilities on the ground. Two major projects of the 0123 plan are being carried out. In this process, the team has created a new generation $17~{\rm cm}$ single-body hollow corner-cube retro-reflector which has been launched with the QueQiao satellite on 21 May 2018; a new laser ranging station equipped with a $1.2~{\rm m}$ telescope has been constructed and the station has successfully ranged to all the five retro-reflectors on the Moon; and the TianQin-1 experimental satellite has been launched on 20 December 2019 and the first round result shows that the satellite has exceeded all of its mission requirements.

KIC 12268220: A $δ$ Scuti Pulsating Star and an Active Protohelium White Dwarf in an Eclipsing Binary System

We present a photometric, spectroscopic, asteroseismic, and evolutionary analysis of the Algol-type eclipsing binary KIC 12268220. We find the O'Connell effect and anticorrelated eclipse timing variations in the Kepler light curve, revealing the presence of large starspots. Radial velocities and atmospheric parameters are obtained from ground-based spectroscopic observations. Combined with the radial velocity measurements and Gaia-derived total luminosity, our light-curve modeling yields the solution of the physical parameters for both the primary and secondary components. We find 14 independent frequencies arising from the $δ$ Scuti primary, and the observed frequencies agree with the frequency range of unstable modes from nonadiabatic calculations. Based on the conclusion from previous literature, we run a grid of models to study the evolution process of our system. The evolutionary tracks of our model suggest that the low-mass ($\sim 0.23\,M_\odot$) evolved secondary shows a similar evolutionary state to the R CMa-type system, which might evolve to an EL CVn system.

Full analytical formulas for frequency response of space-based gravitational wave detectors

The discovery of gravitational waves, which are ripples of space-time itself, opened a new window to test general relativity, because it predicts that there are only plus and cross polarizations for gravitational waves. For alternative theories of gravity, there may be up to six polarizations. The measurement of the polarization is one of the major scientific goals for future gravitational wave detectors. To evaluate the capability of the detector, we need to use the frequency dependent response functions averaged over the source direction and polarization angle. We derive the full analytical formulas of the averaged response functions for all six possible polarizations and present their asymptotic behaviors based on these analytical formulas. Compared with the numerical simulation, the full analytical formulas are more efficient and valid for any equal-arm interferometric gravitational wave detector without optical cavities in the arms and for a time-delay-interferometry Michelson combination.

Primordial black holes and secondary gravitational waves from k/G inflation

The possibility that in the mass range around $10^{-12}\ M_\odot$ most of dark matter constitutes of primordial black holes (PBHs) is a very interesting topic. To produce PBHs with this mass, the primordial scalar power spectrum needs to be enhanced to the order of 0.01 at the scale $k\sim 10^{12}\ \text{Mpc}^{-1}$. The enhanced power spectrum also produces large secondary gravitational waves at the mHz band. A phenomenological delta function power spectrum is usually used to discuss the production of PBHs and secondary gravitational waves. Based on G and k inflations, we propose a new mechanism to enhance the power spectrum at small scales by introducing a non-canonical kinetic term $[1-2G(ϕ)]X$ with the function $G(ϕ)$ having a peak. Away from the peak, $G(ϕ)$ is negligible and we recover the usual slow-roll inflation which is constrained by the cosmic microwave background anisotrpy observations. Around the peak, the slow-roll inflation transiently turns to ultra slow-roll inflation. The enhancement of the power spectrum can be obtained with generic potentials, and there is no need to fine tune the parameters in $G(ϕ)$. The energy spectrum $Ω_{GW}(f)$ of secondary gravitational waves have the characteristic power law behaviour $Ω_{GW}(f)\sim f^{n}$ and is testable by pulsar timing array and space based gravitational wave detectors.

Fault-tolerant Coherent H-infinity Control for Linear Quantum Systems

Robustness and reliability are two key requirements for developing practical quantum control systems. The purpose of this paper is to design a coherent feedback controller for a class of linear quantum systems suffering from Markovian jumping faults so that the closed-loop quantum system has both fault tolerance and H-infinity disturbance attenuation performance. This paper first extends the physical realization conditions from the time-invariant case to the time-varying case for linear stochastic quantum systems. By relating the fault tolerant H-infinity control problem to the dissipation properties and the solutions of Riccati differential equations, an H-infinity controller for the quantum system is then designed by solving a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). In particular, an algorithm is employed to introduce additional noises and to construct the corresponding input matrices to ensure the physical realizability of the quantum controller. For real applications of the developed fault-tolerant control strategy, we present a linear quantum system example from quantum optics, where the amplitude of the pumping field randomly jumps among different values. It is demonstrated that a quantum H-infinity controller can be designed and implemented using some basic optical components to achieve the desired control goal.

Infinite series representation of fractional calculus: theory and applications

This paper focuses on the equivalent expression of fractional integrals/derivatives with an infinite series. A universal framework for fractional Taylor series is developed by expanding an analytic function at the initial instant or the current time. The framework takes into account of the Riemann-Liouville definition, the Caputo definition, the constant order and the variable order. On this basis, some properties of fractional calculus are confirmed conveniently. An intuitive numerical approximation scheme via truncation is proposed subsequently. Finally, several illustrative examples are presented to validate the effectiveness and practicability of the obtained results.

A wide star-black-hole binary system from radial-velocity measurements

All stellar mass black holes have hitherto been identified by X-rays emitted by gas that is accreting onto the black hole from a companion star. These systems are all binaries with black holes below 30 M$_{\odot}$$^{1-4}$. Theory predicts, however, that X-ray emitting systems form a minority of the total population of star-black hole binaries$^{5,6}$. When the black hole is not accreting gas, it can be found through radial velocity measurements of the motion of the companion star. Here we report radial velocity measurements of a Galactic star, LB-1, which is a B-type star, taken over two years. We find that the motion of the B-star and an accompanying H$α$ emission line require the presence of a dark companion with a mass of $68^{+11}_{-13}$ M$_{\odot}$, which can only be a black hole. The long orbital period of 78.9 days shows that this is a wide binary system. The gravitational wave experiments have detected similarly massive black holes$^{7,8}$, but forming such massive ones in a high-metallicity environment would be extremely challenging to current stellar evolution theories$^{9-11}$.

An Improved Quantum Projection Filter

This work extends the previous quantum projection filtering scheme in [Gao Q., Zhang G., & Petersen I. R. (2019). An exponential quantum projection filter for open quantum systems. \emph{Automatica}, 99, 59-68.], by adding an optimality analysis result. A reformulation of the quantum projection filter is derived by minimizing the truncated Stratonovich stochastic Taylor expansion of the difference between the true quantum trajectory and its approximation on a lower-dimensional submanifold through quantum information geometric techniques. Simulation results for a qubit example demonstrate better approximation performance for the new quantum projection filter.

Frequency response of time-delay interferometry for space-based gravitational wave antennas

Space-based gravitational wave detectors cannot keep rigid structures and precise arm length equality, so the precise equality of detector arms which is required in a ground-based interferometer to cancel the overwhelming laser noise is impossible. The time-delay interferometry method is applied to unequal arm lengths to cancel the laser frequency noise. We give analytical formulas of the averaged response functions for tensor, vector, breathing and longitudinal polarizations in different TDI combinations, and obtain their asymptotic behaviors. At low frequencies, $f\ll f_*$, the averaged response functions of all TDI combinations increase as $f^2$ for all six polarizations. The one exception is the averaged response functions of $ζ$ for all six polarizations increase as $f^4$ in the equilateral-triangle case. At high frequencies, $f\gg f_*$, the averaged response functions of all TDI combinations for the tensor and breathing modes fall off as $1/f^2$, the averaged response functions of all TDI combinations for the vector mode fall off as $\ln(f)/f^2$ , and the averaged response functions of all TDI combinations for the longitudinal mode fall as $1/f$. We also give LISA and TianQin sensitivity curves in different TDI combinations for tensor, vector, breathing and longitudinal polarizations.

Long rotation period main-sequence stars from Kepler SAP light curves

Stellar rotation plays a key role in stellar activity. The rotation period could be detected through light curve variations caused by starspots. Kepler provides two types of light curves, one is the Pre-search Data Conditioning (PDC) light curves, the other is the Simple Aperture Photometer (SAP) light curves. Compared with the PDC light curves, the SAP light curves keep the long-term trend, relatively suitable for searches of long period signals. However, SAP data are inflicted by some artefacts such as quarterly rolls and instrumental errors, making it difficult to find the physical periods in the SAP light curves. We explore a systematic approach based on the light curve pre-processing, period detection and candidate selection. We also develop a simulated light curve test to estimate our detection limits for the SAP-like LCs. After applying our method to the raw SAP light curves, we found more than 1000 main-sequence stars with the period longer than 30 days, 165 are newly discovered. Considering the potential flaw of the SAP, we also inspect the newly found objects with photometry methods, and most of our periodical signals are confirmed.

On the constant-roll inflation with large and small $η_H$

We study the seemingly duality between large and small $η_H$ for the constant-roll inflation with the second slow-roll parameter $η_H$ being a constant. In the previous studies, only the constant-roll inflationary models with small $η_H$ are found to be consistent with the observations. The seemingly duality suggests that the constant-roll inflationary models with large $η_H$ may be also consistent with the observations. We find that the duality between the constant-roll inflation with large and small $η_H$ does not exist because both the background and scalar perturbation evolutions are very different. By fitting the constant-roll inflationary models to the observations, we get $-0.016\leη_H\le-0.0078$ at the 95\% C.L if we take $N=60$ for the models with increasing $ε_H$ in which inflation ends when $ε_H=1$, and $3.0135\le η_H\le 3.021$ at the 68\% C.L., and $3.0115\le η_H\le 3.024$ at the 95\% C.L. for the models with decreasing $ε_H$.

Time-domain response of nabla discrete fractional order systems

This paper investigates the time--domain response of nabla discrete fractional order systems by exploring several useful properties of the nabla discrete Laplace transform and the discrete Mittag--Leffler function. In particular, we establish two fundamental properties of a nabla discrete fractional order system with nonzero initial instant: i) the existence and uniqueness of the system time--domain response; and ii) the dynamic behavior of the zero input response. Finally, one numerical example is provided to show the validity of the theoretical results.
