1+1>2: Programming Know-What and Know-How Knowledge Fusion, Semantic Enrichment and Coherent Application

Software programming requires both API reference (know-what) knowledge and programming task (know-how) knowledge. Lots of programming know-what and know-how knowledge is documented in text, for example, API reference documentation and programming tutorials. To improve knowledge accessibility and usage, several recent studies use Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods to construct API know-what knowledge graph (API-KG) and programming task know-how knowledge graph (Task-KG) from software documentation. Although being promising, current API-KG and Task-KG are independent of each other, and thus are void of inherent connections between the two types of knowledge. Our empirical study on Stack Overflow questions confirms that only 36% of the API usage problems can be answered by the know-how or the know-what knowledge alone, while the rest questions require a fusion of both. Inspired by this observation, we make the first attempt to fuse API-KG and Task-KG by API entity linking. This fusion creates nine categories of API semantic relations and two types of task semantic relations which are not present in the stand-alone API-KG or Task-KG. According to the definitions of these new API and task semantic relations, our approach dives deeper than the surface-level API linking of API-KG and Task-KG, and infers nine categories of API semantic relations from task descriptions and two types of task semantic relations with the assistance of API-KG, which enrich the declaration or syntactic relations in the current API-KG and Task-KG. Our fused and semantically-enriched API-Task KG supports coherent API/Task-centric knowledge search by text or code queries.

Spinon continuum in the Heisenberg quantum chain compound Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$

Magnetic excitations in the spin chain candidate Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$ have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal sample. A spinon continuum with a bandwidth of $\sim22$ meV is observed along the chain formed by alternating magnetic V$^{4+}$ and nonmagnetic V$^{5+}$ ions. Incipient magnetic Bragg peaks due to weak ferromagnetic interchain couplings emerge when approaching the magnetic transition at $T_N\sim 5.3$ K while the excitations remain gapless within the instrumental resolution. Comparisons to the Bethe ansatz, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, and effective field theories confirm Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$ as a host of weakly coupled $S = 1/2$ chains dominated by antiferromagnetic intrachain interactions of $\sim7.1$(1) meV.

Electronic and magnetic phase diagrams of Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

The 3$d^7$ Co$^{2+}$-based insulating magnet \NCTO{} has recently been reported to have strong Kitaev interactions on a honeycomb lattice, and is thus being considered as a Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate. However, due to the existence of other types of interactions, a spontaneous long-range magnetic order occurs. This order is suppressed by applied magnetic fields leading to a succession of phases and ultimately saturation of the magnetic moments. The precise phase diagram, the nature of the phases, and the possibility that one of the field-induced phases is a Kitaev quantum spin liquid phase are still a matter of debate. Here we measured an extensive set of physical properties to build the complete temperature-field phase diagrams to magnetic saturation at 10 T for magnetic fields along the $a$- and $a^*$-axes, and a partial phase diagram up to 60 T along $c$. We probe the phases using magnetization, specific heat, magnetocaloric effect, magnetostriction, dielectric constant, and electric polarization, which is a symmetry-sensitive probe. With these measurements we identify all the previously incomplete phase boundaries and find new high-field phase boundaries. We find strong magnetoelectric coupling in the dielectric constant and moderate magnetostrictive coupling at several phase boundaries. Furthermore, we detect the symmetry of the magnetic order using electrical polarization measurements under magnetic fields. Based on our analysis, the absence of electric polarization under zero or finite magnetic field in any of the phases or after...

Structure maps for MAX phases formability revisited

The extraordinary chemical diversity of MAX phases raises the question of how many and which novel ones are yet to be discovered. The conventional schemes rely either on executions of well designed experiments or elaborately crafted calculations; both of which have been key tactics within the past several decades that have yielded many of important new materials we are studying and using today. However, these approaches are expensive despite the emergence of high throughput automations or evolution of high speed computers. In this work, we have revisited the in prior proposed light duty strategy, i.e. structure mapping, for describing the genomic conditions under which one MAX phase could form; that allow us to make successful formability and non formability separation of MAX phases with a fidelity of 95.5%. Our results suggest that the proposed coordinates, and further the developed structure maps, are able to offer a useful initial guiding principles for systematic screenings of potential MAX phases and provide untapped opportunities for their structure prediction and materials design.

Anisotropic in-plane heat transport of Kitaev magnet Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

We report a study on low-temperature heat transport of Kitaev magnet Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$, with the heat current and magnetic fields along the honeycomb spin layer (the $ab$ plane). The zero-field thermal conductivity of $κ^a_{xx}$ and $κ^{a*}_{xx}$ display similar temperature dependence and small difference in their magnitudes; whereas, their magnetic field (parallel to the heat current) dependence are quite different and are related to the field-induced magnetic transitions. The $κ^a_{xx}(B)$ data for $B \parallel a$ at very low temperatures have an anomaly at 10.25--10.5 T, which reveals an unexplored magnetic transition. The planar thermal Hall conductivity $κ^a_{xy}$ and $κ^{a*}_{xy}$ show very weak signals at low fields and rather large values with sign change at high fields. This may point to a possible magnetic structure transition or the change of the magnon band topology that induces a radical change of magnon Berry curvature distribution before entering the spin polarized state. These results put clear constraints on the high-field phase and the theoretical models for Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$.

Stationary Coupled KdV Hierarchies and Related Poisson Structures

In this paper we continue our analysis of the stationary flows of $M$ component, coupled KdV (cKdV) hierarchies and their modifications. We describe the general structure of the $t_1$ and $t_2$ flows, using the case $M=3$ as our main example. One of our stationary reductions gives $N$ degrees of freedom, superintegrable systems. When $N=1$ (for $t_1$) and $N=2$ (for $t_2$), we have Poisson maps, which give multi-Hamiltonian representations of the flows. We discuss the general structure of these Poisson tensors and give explicit forms for the case $M=3$. In this case there are 3 modified hierarchies, each with 4 Poisson brackets. The stationary $t_2$ flow (for $N=2$) is separable in parabolic coordinates. Each Poisson bracket has rank 4, with $M+1$ Casimirs. The $4\times 4$ ``core'' of the Poisson tensors are nonsingular and related by a ``recursion operator''. The remaining part of each tensor is built out of the two commuting Hamiltonian vector fields, depending upon the specific Casimirs. The Poisson brackets are generalised to include the entire class of potential, separable in parabolic coordinates. The Jacobi identity imposes specific dependence on some parameters, representing the Casimirs of the extended canonical bracket. This general case is no longer a stationary cKdV flow, with Lax representation. We give a recursive procedure for constructing the Lax representation of the stationary flow for all values of $M$, {\em without} having to go through the stationary reduction.

A Chain of AI-based Solutions for Resolving FQNs and Fixing Syntax Errors in Partial Code

API documentation, technical blogs and programming Q&A sites contain numerous partial code that can be reused in programming tasks, but often these code are uncompilable due to unresolved names and syntax errors. To facilitate partial code reuse, we propose the Partial Code Reuse Chain (PCR-Chain) for resolving fully-qualified names (FQNs) and fixing last-mile syntax errors in partial code based on a giant large language model (LLM) like ChatGPT. Methodologically, PCR-Chain is backed up by the underlying global-level prompt architecture (which combines three design ideas: hierarchical task breakdown, prompt composition, and a mix of prompt-based AI and non-AI units) and the local-level prompt design. Technically, we propose PCR-Chain, which employs in-context learning rather than symbolic, costly training methods. Experimental results demonstrate that in dynamically-typed languages (Python), PCR-Chain outperforms current state-of-the-art (SOTA) 5% accuracy like RING. For statically-type languages (Java), our approach achieves high accuracy of 80.5% in resolving both non-FQNs and last-mile syntax errors, surpassing SOTA methods (RING) that can only address last-mile syntax errors. The correct execution of the unit, module, and PCR-Chain demonstrates the effectiveness of the prompt design, composition, and architecture and opens up possibilities for building software engineering tools based on LLMs, replacing traditional program analysis methods.

Prompt Sapper: LLM-Empowered Software Engineering Infrastructure for AI-Native Services

Foundation models, such as GPT-4, DALL-E have brought unprecedented AI "operating system" effect and new forms of human-AI interaction, sparking a wave of innovation in AI-native services, where natural language prompts serve as executable "code" directly (prompt as executable code), eliminating the need for programming language as an intermediary and opening up the door to personal AI. Prompt Sapper has emerged in response, committed to support the development of AI-native services by AI chain engineering. It creates a large language model (LLM) empowered software engineering infrastructure for authoring AI chains through human-AI collaborative intelligence, unleashing the AI innovation potential of every individual, and forging a future where everyone can be a master of AI innovation. This article will introduce the R\&D motivation behind Prompt Sapper, along with its corresponding AI chain engineering methodology and technical practices.

AI Chain on Large Language Model for Unsupervised Control Flow Graph Generation for Statically-Typed Partial Code

Control Flow Graphs (CFGs) are essential for visualizing, understanding and analyzing program behavior. For statically-typed programming language like Java, developers obtain CFGs by using bytecode-based methods for compilable code and Abstract Syntax Tree (AST)-based methods for partially uncompilable code. However, explicit syntax errors during AST construction and implicit semantic errors caused by bad coding practices can lead to behavioral loss and deviation of CFGs.To address the issue, we propose a novel approach that leverages the error-tolerant and understanding ability of pre-trained Large Language Models (LLMs) to generate CFGs. Our approach involves a Chain of Thought (CoT) with four steps: structure hierarchy extraction, nested code block extraction, CFG generation of nested code blocks, and fusion of all nested code blocks' CFGs. To address the limitations of the original CoT's single-prompt approach (i.e., completing all steps in a single generative pass), which can result in an ``epic'' prompt with hard-to-control behavior and error accumulation, we break down the CoT into an AI chain with explicit sub-steps. Each sub-step corresponds to a separate AI-unit, with an effective prompt assigned to each unit for interacting with LLMs to accomplish a specific purpose. Our experiments confirmed that our method outperforms existing CFG tools in terms of node and edge coverage, especially for incomplete or erroneous code. We also conducted an ablation experiment and confirmed the effectiveness of AI chain design principles: Hierarchical Task Breakdown, Unit Composition, and Mix of AI Units and Non-AI Units. Our work opens up new possibilities for building foundational software engineering tools based on LLMs, as opposed to traditional program analysis methods.

Disorder-enriched magnetic excitations in the Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

Using optical magneto-spectroscopy, we investigate the magnetic excitations of Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ in a broad magnetic field range ($0\ \rm{T}\leq B\leq 17.5\ \rm{T}$) at low temperature. Our measurements reveal rich spectra of in-plane magnetic excitations with a surprisingly large number of modes, even in the high-field spin-polarized state. Theoretical calculations find that the Na-occupation disorder in \NCTO plays a crucial role in generating these modes. Our work demonstrates the necessity to consider disorder in the spin environment in the search for Kitaev quantum spin liquid states in practicable materials.

Intercalation of metal into transition metal dichalcogenides in molten salts

Van der Waals (vdW) layered materials have drawn tremendous interests due to their unique properties. Atom intercalation in the vdW gap of layered materials can tune their electronic structure and generate unexpected properties. Here we report a chemical-scissor mediated method that enables metal intercalation into transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) in molten salts. By using this approach, various guest metal atoms (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Ag) were intercalated into various TMDCs hosts (such as TiS2, NbS2, TaS2, TiSe2, NbSe2, TaSe2 and Ti0.5V0.5S2). The structure of the intercalated compound and intercalation mechanism was investigated. The results indicate that the vdW gap and valence state of TMDCs can be modified through metal intercalation, and the intercalation behavior is dictated by the electron work function. Such a chemical-scissor mediated intercalation provides an approach to tune the physical and chemical properties of TMDCs, which may open an avenue in functional application ranging from energy conversion to electronics.

Answering Uncertain, Under-Specified API Queries Assisted by Knowledge-Aware Human-AI Dialogue

Developers' API needs should be more pragmatic, such as seeking suggestive, explainable, and extensible APIs rather than the so-called best result. Existing API search research cannot meet these pragmatic needs because they are solely concerned with query-API relevance. This necessitates a focus on enhancing the entire query process, from query definition to query refinement through intent clarification to query results promoting divergent thinking about results. This paper designs a novel Knowledge-Aware Human-AI Dialog agent (KAHAID) which guides the developer to clarify the uncertain, under-specified query through multi-round question answering and recommends APIs for the clarified query with relevance explanation and extended suggestions (e.g., alternative, collaborating or opposite-function APIs). We systematically evaluate KAHAID. In terms of human-AI dialogue efficiency, it achieves a high diversity of question options and the ability to guide developers to find APIs using fewer dialogue rounds. For API recommendation, KAHAID achieves an MRR and MAP of 0.769 and 0.794, outperforming state-of-the-art methods BIKER and CLEAR by at least 47% in MRR and 226.7% in MAP. For knowledge extension, KAHAID obtains an MRR and MAP of 0.815 and 0.864, surpassing ZaCQ by at least 42% in MRR and 45.2\% in MAP. Furthermore, we conduct a user study. It shows that explainable API recommendations, as implemented by KAHAID, can help developers identify the best API approach more easily or confidently, improving inspiration of clarification question options by at least 20.83% and the extensibility of extended APIs by at least 12.5%.

Continuous spin excitations in the three-dimensional frustrated magnet K2Ni2(SO4)3

Continuous spin excitations are widely recognized as one of the hallmarks of novel spin states in quantum magnets, such as quantum spin liquids (QSLs). Here, we report the observation of such kind of excitations in K2Ni2(SO4)3, which consists of two sets of intersected spin-1 Ni2+ trillium lattices. Our inelastic neutron scattering measurement on single crystals clearly shows a dominant excitation continuum, which exhibits a distinct temperature-dependent behavior from that of spin waves, and is rooted in strong quantum spin fluctuations. Further using the self-consistent-gaussian-approximation method, we determined the fourth- and fifth-nearest neighbor exchange interactions are dominant. These two bonds together form a unique three-dimensional network of corner-sharing tetrahedra, which we name as ''hyper-trillium'' lattice. Our results provide direct evidence for the existence of QSL features in K2Ni2(SO4)3 and highlight the potential for the hyper-trillium lattice to host frustrated quantum magnetism.

Stationary Flows Revisited

In this paper we revisit the subject of stationary flows of Lax hierarchies of a coupled KdV class. We explain the main ideas in the standard KdV case and then consider the dispersive water waves (DWW) case, with respectively 2 and 3 Hamiltonian representations. Each Hamiltonian representation gives us a different form of stationary flow. Comparing these, we construct Poisson maps, which, being non-canonical, give rise to bi-Hamiltonian representations of the stationary flows. An alternative approach is to use the Miura maps, which we do in the case of the DWW hierarchy, which has two ''modifications''. This structure gives us 3 sequences of Poisson related stationary flows. We use the Poisson maps to build a tri-Hamiltonian representation of each of the three stationary hierarchies. One of the Hamiltonian representations allows a multi-component squared eigenfunction expansion, which gives $N$ degrees of freedom Hamiltonians, with first integrals. A Lax representation for each of the stationary flows is derived from the coupled KdV matrices. In the case of 3 degrees of freedom, we give a generalisation of our Lax matrices and Hamiltonian functions, which allows a connection with the rational Calogero-Moser (CM) system. This gives a coupling of the CM system with other potentials, along with a Lax representation. We present the particular case of coupling one of the integrable Hénon-Heiles systems to CM.

Magnetic field effects on the quantum spin liquid behaviors of NaYbS$_2$

Spin-orbit coupling is an important ingredient to regulate the many-body physics, especially for many spin liquid candidate materials such as rare-earth magnets and Kitaev materials. The rare-earth chalcogenides NaYbCh$_2$ (Ch = O, S, Se) is a congenital frustrating system to exhibit the intrinsic landmark of spin liquid by eliminating both the site disorders between Na$^{+}$ and Yb$^{3+}$ ions with the big ionic size difference and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction with the perfect triangular lattice of the Yb$^{3+}$ ions. The temperature versus magnetic-field phase diagram is established by the magnetization, specific heat, and neutron-scattering measurements. Notably, the neutron diffraction spectra and the magnetization curve might provide microscopic evidence for a series of spin configuration for in-plane fields, which include the disordered spin liquid state, 120$^{o}$ antiferromagnet, and one-half magnetization state. Furthermore, the ground state is suggested to be a gapless spin liquid from inelastic neutron scattering, and the magnetic field adjusts the spin orbit coupling. Therefore, the strong spin-orbit coupling in the frustrated quantum magnet substantially enriches low-energy spin physics. This rare-earth family could offer a good platform for exploring the quantum spin liquid ground state and quantum magnetic transitions.

API Entity and Relation Joint Extraction from Text via Dynamic Prompt-tuned Language Model

Extraction of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and their semantic relations from unstructured text (e.g., Stack Overflow) is a fundamental work for software engineering tasks (e.g., API recommendation). However, existing approaches are rule-based and sequence-labeling based. They must manually enumerate the rules or label data for a wide range of sentence patterns, which involves a significant amount of labor overhead and is exacerbated by morphological and common-word ambiguity. In contrast to matching or labeling API entities and relations, this paper formulates heterogeneous API extraction and API relation extraction task as a sequence-to-sequence generation task, and proposes AERJE, an API entity-relation joint extraction model based on the large pre-trained language model. After training on a small number of ambiguous but correctly labeled data, AERJE builds a multi-task architecture that extracts API entities and relations from unstructured text using dynamic prompts. We systematically evaluate AERJE on a set of long and ambiguous sentences from Stack Overflow. The experimental results show that AERJE achieves high accuracy and discrimination ability in API entity-relation joint extraction, even with zero or few-shot fine-tuning.

SE Factual Knowledge in Frozen Giant Code Model: A Study on FQN and its Retrieval

Pre-trained giant code models (PCMs) start coming into the developers' daily practices. Understanding what types of and how much software knowledge is packed into PCMs is the foundation for incorporating PCMs into software engineering (SE) tasks and fully releasing their potential. In this work, we conduct the first systematic study on the SE factual knowledge in the state-of-the-art PCM CoPilot, focusing on APIs' Fully Qualified Names (FQNs), the fundamental knowledge for effective code analysis, search and reuse. Driven by FQNs' data distribution properties, we design a novel lightweight in-context learning on Copilot for FQN inference, which does not require code compilation as traditional methods or gradient update by recent FQN prompt-tuning. We systematically experiment with five in-context-learning design factors to identify the best in-context learning configuration that developers can adopt in practice. With this best configuration, we investigate the effects of amount of example prompts and FQN data properties on Copilot's FQN inference capability. Our results confirm that Copilot stores diverse FQN knowledge and can be applied for the FQN inference due to its high inference accuracy and non-reliance on code analysis. Based on our experience interacting with Copilot, we discuss various opportunities to improve human-CoPilot interaction in the FQN inference task.

SGCE-Font: Skeleton Guided Channel Expansion for Chinese Font Generation

The automatic generation of Chinese fonts is an important problem involved in many applications. The predominated methods for the Chinese font generation are based on the deep generative models, especially the generative adversarial networks (GANs). However, existing GAN-based methods (say, CycleGAN) for the Chinese font generation usually suffer from the mode collapse issue, mainly due to the lack of effective guidance information. This paper proposes a novel information guidance module called the skeleton guided channel expansion (SGCE) module for the Chinese font generation through integrating the skeleton information into the generator with the channel expansion way, motivated by the observation that the skeleton embodies both local and global structure information of Chinese characters. We conduct extensive experiments to show the effectiveness of the proposed module. Numerical results show that the mode collapse issue suffered by the known CycleGAN can be effectively alleviated by equipping with the proposed SGCE module, and the CycleGAN equipped with SGCE outperforms the state-of-the-art models in terms of four important evaluation metrics and visualization quality. Besides CycleGAN, we also show that the suggested SGCE module can be adapted to other models for Chinese font generation as a plug-and-play module to further improve their performance.
