Highly Efficient Processing Multi-photon States

How to implement multi-qubit gates is an important problem in quantum information processing. Based on cross phase modulation, we present an approach to realizing a family of multi-qubit gates that deterministically operate on single photons as the qubits. A general $n$-qubit unitary operation is a typical example of these gates. The approach greatly relax the requirement on the resources, such as the ancilla photons and coherent beams, as well as the number of operations on the qubits. The improvement in this framework may facilitate large scale quantum information processing.

Scintillation and Ionization Responses of Liquid Xenon to Low Energy Electronic and Nuclear Recoils at Drift Fields from 236 V/cm to 3.93 kV/cm

We present new measurements of the scintillation and ionization yields in liquid xenon for low energy electronic (about 3--7 keV$_{ee}$) and nuclear recoils (about 8--20 keV$_{nr}$) at different drift fields from 236 V/cm to 3.93 kV/cm, using a three-dimensional sensitive liquid xenon time projection chamber with high energy and position resolutions. Our measurement of signal responses to nuclear recoils agrees with predictions from the NEST model. However, our measured ionization (scintillation) yields for electronic recoils are consistently higher (lower) than those from the NEST model by about 5 e$^-$/keV$_{ee}$ (ph/keV$_{ee}$) at all scanned drift fields. New recombination parameters based on the Thomas-Imel box model are derived from our data. Given the lack of precise measurement of scintillation and ionization yields for low energy electronic recoils in liquid xenon previously, our new measurement provides so far the best available data covering low energy region at different drift fields for liquid xenon detectors relevant to dark matter searches.

First dark matter search results from the PandaX-I experiment

We report on the first dark-matter (DM) search results from PandaX-I, a low threshold dual-phase xenon experiment operating at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. In the 37-kg liquid xenon target with 17.4 live-days of exposure, no DM particle candidate event was found. This result sets a stringent limit for low-mass DM particles and disfavors the interpretation of previously-reported positive experimental results. The minimum upper limit, $3.7\times10^{-44}$\,cm$^2$, for the spin-independent isoscalar DM-particle-nucleon scattering cross section is obtained at a DM-particle mass of 49\,GeV/c$^2$ at 90\% confidence level.

Fully Quantum Approach to Optomechanical Entanglement

The radiation pressure induced coupling between an optical cavity field and a mechanical oscillator can create entanglement between them. In previous works this entanglement was treated as that of the quantum fluctuations of the cavity and mechanical modes around their classical mean values. Here we provide a fully quantum approach to optomechanical entanglement, which goes beyond the approximation of classical mean motion plus quantum fluctuation, and applies to arbitrary cavity drive. We illustrate the real-time evolution of optomechanical entanglement under drive of arbitrary detuning to show the existence of high, robust and stable entanglement in blue detuned regime, and highlight the quantum noise effects that can cause entanglement sudden death and revival.

High Resolution Gamma Ray Detection in a Dual Phase Xenon Time Projection Chamber

Dual phase Xenon Time Projection Chambers (XeTPCs) are being used by several experiments as a promising technique for direct detection of dark matter. We report on the design and performance of a small 3-D sensitive dual phase XeTPC. The position resolution is 2 mm in the center of detector, limited by the hole size of the mesh at the proportional scintillation region. An energy resolution of 1.6%(σ /E) for 662 keV gamma rays is achieved by combining the ionization and scintillation signals at a drift field of 0.5 kV/cm. This represents the best energy resolution achieved among liquid xenon detectors. The energy resolution is only slightly dependent on drift field. Better than 2% energy resolution (σ /E) for 662 keV gamma rays can be achieved for drift fields between 100 V/cm and 2 kV/cm. With high position and energy resolutions, a dual phase XeTPC has also potential applications in surveys for neutrinoless double-beta decay and in gamma ray imaging.

Detection of Alpha Particles and Low Energy Gamma Rays by Thermo-Bonded Micromegas in Xenon Gas

Micromegas is a type of micro-pattern gaseous detector currently under R&D for applications in rare event search experiments. Here we report the performance of a Micromegas structure constructed with a micromesh thermo-bonded to a readout plane, motivated by its potential application in two-phase xenon detectors for dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. The study is carried out in pure xenon at room temperature. Measurements with alpha particles from the Americium-241 source showed that gas gains larger than 200 can be obtained at xenon pressure up to 3 atm. Gamma rays down to 8 keV were observed with such a device.

Efficient graph state generation and artificial error detection

How to generate photonic cluster state or graph state efficiently is the main problem in optical measurement-based quantum computation. Assisted by the cross phase modulation technique, we propose an efficient scheme to realize the cascade CZ operation, which could be used to generate universal cluster state, with the controlled-path gate as element operation. Especially, for the wheel cluster state, the generation processes are obviously simpler than the former approaches. Moreover, we consider the artificial error that one forgot to operate one or some single photons during the generation processes cross-type, star-type graph state. This error likely occurs in the large scale of graph state generation with one-by-one pattern and is firstly considered in this paper. With the present approach, it is possible to judge whether all the involved single photons are connected as desired or not, i.e., detect the artificial error with the success probability 1/2.

Efficient and flexible generation of entangled qudits with cross phase modulation

In this paper, we provide a simple but powerful module to generate entangled qudits. This module assisted with cross-Kerr nonlinearity is available to the entangled qudits generation with arbitrary dimension, and it could work well even when the two independent qudits lose the same number of single photons. Moreover, with the cascade uses of modules, the deterministic generation but with nonidentical forms of entangled qudits is possible.

Heralded generation of symmetric and asymmetric entangled qudits with weak cross-Kerr nonlinearity

High dimensional entangled states have attracted much more attentions, due to their strong nonlocality and much powerful capability for quantum information processing. By the methods presented in this paper, arbitrary forms entangled qudits including symmetric and asymmetric forms could be generated with the weak cross-Kerr nonlinearity. These schemes are heralded by the detections of single-photon detectors. If all the detectors do not register any single photons, the generation is success with the probability $1/n^{M}$ determined by dimension $n$ and partite $M$. Furthermore, these schemes work well even with the common photon number nonresolving detectors, therefore they are feasible with the current experimental technology.

Weaving independently generated photons into an arbitrary graph state

The controlled Z (CZ) operations acting separately on pairs of qubits are commonly adopted in the schemes of generating graph states, the multi-partite entangled states for the one-way quantum computing. For this purpose, we propose a setup of cascade CZ operation on a whole group of qubits in sequence. The operation of the setup starts with entangling an ancilla photon to the first photon as qubit, and this ancilla automatically moves from one entanglement link to another in assisting the formation of a string in graph states. The generation of some special types of graph states, such as the three-dimensional ones, can be greatly simplified in this approach. The setup presented uses weak nonlinearities, but an implementation using probabilistic linear optics is also possible.

Cross-Kerr nonlinearity between continuous-mode coherent states and single photons

Weak cross-Kerr nonlinearities between single photons and coherent states are the basis for many applications in quantum information processing. These nonlinearities have so far mainly been discussed in terms of highly idealized single-mode models. We develop a general theory of the interaction between continuous-mode photonic pulses and apply it to the case of a single photon interacting with a coherent state. We quantitatively study the validity of the usual single-mode approximation using the concepts of fidelity and conditional phase. We show that high fidelities, non-zero conditional phases and high photon numbers are compatible, under conditions where the pulses fully pass through each other and where unwanted transverse-mode effects are suppressed.

Addendum to "Single photon logic gates using minimum resources"

The authors call attention to a previous work [Qing Lin and Bing He, Phys. Rev. A 80, 042310 (2009)] on the realization of multi-qubit logic gates with controlled-path and merging gate. We supplement the work by showing how to efficiently build realistic quantum circuits in this approach and giving the guiding rules for the task.

Efficient generation of universal two-dimensional cluster states with hybrid systems

We present a scheme to generate two-dimensional cluster state efficiently. The number of the basic gate-entangler-for the operation is in the order of the entanglement bonds of a cluster state, and could be reduced greatly if one uses them repeatedly. The scheme is deterministic and uses few ancilla resources and no quantum memory. It is suitable for large-scale quantum computation and feasible with the current experimental technology.

Bi-directional mapping between polarization and spatially encoded photonic qutrits

Qutrits, the triple level quantum systems in various forms, have been proposed for quantum information processing recently. By the methods presented in this paper a bi-photonic qutrit, which is encoded with the polarizations of two photons in the same spatial-temporal mode, can be mapped to a single photon qutrit in spatial modes. It will make arbitrary unitary operation on such bi-photonic qutrit possible if we can also realize the inverse map to polarization space. Among the two schemes proposed in this paper, the one based only on linear optics realizes an arbitrary U(3) operation with a very small success probability. However, if added with weak nonlinearity, the success probability can be greatly improved. These schemes are feasible with the current experimental technology.

Processing multi-photon state through operation on single photon: methods and applications

Multi-photon states are widely applied in quantum information technology. By the methods presented in this paper, the structure of a multi-photon state in the form of multiple single photon qubit product can be mapped to a single photon qudit, which could also be in separable product with other photons. This makes the possible manipulation of such multi-photon states in the way of processing single photon states. The optical realization of unknown qubit discrimination [B. He, J. A. Bergou, and Y.-H. Ren, Phys. Rev. A 76, 032301 (2007)] is simplified with the transformation methods. Another application is the construction of quantum logic gates, where the inverse transformations back to the input state spaces are also necessary. We especially show that the modified setups to implement the transformations can realize the deterministic multi-control gates (including Toffoli gate) operating directly on the products of single photon qubits.

Single-photon logic gates using minimal resources

We present a simple architecture for deterministic quantum circuits operating on single photon qubits. Few resources are necessary to implement two elementary gates and can be recycled for computing with large numbers of qubits. The deterministic realization of some key multi-qubit gates, such as the Fredkin and Toffoli gate, is greatly simplified in this approach.

Quantum control gates with weak cross-Kerr nonlinearity

In this paper, with the weak cross-Kerr nonlinearity, we first present a special experimental scheme called C-path gate with which the realization of all possible bipartite POVMs of two-photon polarization states can be simpler and nearly deterministic. Following the same technique, the schemes of the realization of quantum control gates have been proposed, including the CNOT gate (1/2), Fredkin gate (1/8), Toffoli gate (2/23), CU gate and even MCU gate. All these gates are scalable with the certain probabilities which are larger than those gates in linear optics. Less resource are required and the structures of these gates are so simple that we think they are feasible with current technology and may be useful for the realization of universal computation in optics.

Physical accessible transformations on a finite number of quantum states

We consider to treat the usual probabilistic cloning, state separation, unambiguous state discrimination, \emph{etc} in a uniform framework. All these transformations can be regarded as special examples of generalized completely positive trace non-increasing maps on a finite number of input states. From the system-ancilla model we construct the corresponding unitary implementation of pure $\to$ pure, pure $\to$ mixed, mixed $\to$ pure, and mixed $\to$ mixed states transformations in the whole system and obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions on the existence of the desired maps. We expect our work will be helpful to explore what we can do on a finite set of input states.
