Realizing the potential of the Dragonfly Spectral Line Mapper: Calibration methods and on-sky performance

The Dragonfly Spectral Line Mapper is an innovative all-refracting telescope designed to carry out ultra-low surface brightness wide-field mapping of visible wavelength line emission. Equipped with ultranarrowband (0.8 nm bandwidth) filters mounted in Dragonfly Filter-Tilter instrumentation, the Dragonfly Spectral Line Mapper maps H$α$, [NII]$λ$6583, and [OIII]$λ$5007 line emission produced by structures with sizes ranging from $\sim$1 to 1000 kpc in the local Universe. These spatial scales encompass that of the exceedingly diffuse and faintly radiating circumgalactic medium, which is singularly difficult to detect with conventional mirror-based telescope instrumentation. Extremely careful control of systematics is required to directly image these large scale structures, necessitating high fidelity sky background subtraction, wavelength calibration, and specialized flat-fielding methods. In this paper, we discuss the on-sky performance of the Dragonfly Spectral Line Mapper with these methods in place.

The Dragonfly Spectral Line Mapper: Completion of the 120-lens array

The Dragonfly Spectral Line Mapper is a mosaic telescope comprising 120 Canon telephoto lenses, based on the design of the Dragonfly Telephoto Array. With a wide field of view, and the addition of the "Dragonfly Filter-Tilter" instrumentation holding ultra narrow bandpass filters in front of each lens, the Dragonfly Spectral Line mapper is optimized for ultra low surface brightness imaging of visible wavelength line emission. The Dragonfly Spectral Line Mapper was constructed and commissioned in four phases from March 2022 to November 2023. During this time, four individual mounts of 30 lenses each were constructed and commissioned. The commissioning of the telescope included the deployment of the "Dragonfly StarChaser" which carries out image stabilization corrections in the telephoto lens, to enable hour-long exposures to be taken. In addition, we introduced new instrumentation such as a film to cover the optics to keep the filters clean. Here we describe the updated design of the complete 120-lens array, and the implementation of the instrumentation described above. Additionally, we present updated characterization of the cameras and filter transmission for the full array. Finally, we reflect on the construction and commissioning process of the complete 120-lens array Dragonfly Spectral Line Mapper, and remark on the feasibility of a larger 1000-lens array.

Software infrastructure for the highly-distributed semi-autonomous Dragonfly Spectral Line Mapper

The Dragonfly Spectral Line Mapper (DSLM) is a semi-autonomous, distributed-aperture based telescope design, featuring a modular setup of 120 Canon telephoto lenses, and equal numbers of ultra-narrowband filters, detectors, and other peripherals. Here we introduce the observatory software stack for this highly-distributed system. Its core is the Dragonfly Communication Protocol (DCP), a pure-Python hardware communication framework for standardized hardware interaction. On top of this are 120 REST-ful FastAPI web servers, hosted on Raspberry Pis attached to each unit, orchestrating command translation to the hardware and providing diagnostic feedback to a central control system running the global instrument control software. We discuss key features of this software suite, including docker containerization for environment management, class composition as a flexible framework for array commands, and a state machine algorithm which controls the telescope during autonomous observations.

What If We Recaption Billions of Web Images with LLaMA-3?

Web-crawled image-text pairs are inherently noisy. Prior studies demonstrate that semantically aligning and enriching textual descriptions of these pairs can significantly enhance model training across various vision-language tasks, particularly text-to-image generation. However, large-scale investigations in this area remain predominantly closed-source. Our paper aims to bridge this community effort, leveraging the powerful and \textit{open-sourced} LLaMA-3, a GPT-4 level LLM. Our recaptioning pipeline is simple: first, we fine-tune a LLaMA-3-8B powered LLaVA-1.5 and then employ it to recaption 1.3 billion images from the DataComp-1B dataset. Our empirical results confirm that this enhanced dataset, Recap-DataComp-1B, offers substantial benefits in training advanced vision-language models. For discriminative models like CLIP, we observe enhanced zero-shot performance in cross-modal retrieval tasks. For generative models like text-to-image Diffusion Transformers, the generated images exhibit a significant improvement in alignment with users' text instructions, especially in following complex queries. Object-level Scene Deocclusion

Deoccluding the hidden portions of objects in a scene is a formidable task, particularly when addressing real-world scenes. In this paper, we present a new self-supervised PArallel visible-to-COmplete diffusion framework, named PACO, a foundation model for object-level scene deocclusion. Leveraging the rich prior of pre-trained models, we first design the parallel variational autoencoder, which produces a full-view feature map that simultaneously encodes multiple complete objects, and the visible-to-complete latent generator, which learns to implicitly predict the full-view feature map from partial-view feature map and text prompts extracted from the incomplete objects in the input image. To train PACO, we create a large-scale dataset with 500k samples to enable self-supervised learning, avoiding tedious annotations of the amodal masks and occluded regions. At inference, we devise a layer-wise deocclusion strategy to improve efficiency while maintaining the deocclusion quality. Extensive experiments on COCOA and various real-world scenes demonstrate the superior capability of PACO for scene deocclusion, surpassing the state of the arts by a large margin. Our method can also be extended to cross-domain scenes and novel categories that are not covered by the training set. Further, we demonstrate the deocclusion applicability of PACO in single-view 3D scene reconstruction and object recomposition.

The current status of large language models in summarizing radiology report impressions

Large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT show excellent capabilities in various natural language processing tasks, especially for text generation. The effectiveness of LLMs in summarizing radiology report impressions remains unclear. In this study, we explore the capability of eight LLMs on the radiology report impression summarization. Three types of radiology reports, i.e., CT, PET-CT, and Ultrasound reports, are collected from Peking University Cancer Hospital and Institute. We use the report findings to construct the zero-shot, one-shot, and three-shot prompts with complete example reports to generate the impressions. Besides the automatic quantitative evaluation metrics, we define five human evaluation metrics, i.e., completeness, correctness, conciseness, verisimilitude, and replaceability, to evaluate the semantics of the generated impressions. Two thoracic surgeons (ZSY and LB) and one radiologist (LQ) compare the generated impressions with the reference impressions and score each impression under the five human evaluation metrics. Experimental results show that there is a gap between the generated impressions and reference impressions. Although the LLMs achieve comparable performance in completeness and correctness, the conciseness and verisimilitude scores are not very high. Using few-shot prompts can improve the LLMs' performance in conciseness and verisimilitude, but the clinicians still think the LLMs can not replace the radiologists in summarizing the radiology impressions.

A parabolic PDE-based approach to Borell--Brascamp--Lieb inequality

In this paper, we provide a new PDE proof for the celebrated Borell--Brascamp--Lieb inequality. Our approach reveals a deep connection between the Borell--Brascamp--Lieb inequality and properties of diffusion equations of porous medium type pertaining to the large time asymptotics and preservation of a generalized concavity of the solutions. We also recover the equality condition in the special case of the Prékopa--Leindler inequality by further exploiting known properties of the heat equation including the eventual log-concavity and backward uniqueness of solutions.

Transaction Fee Estimation in the Bitcoin System

In the Bitcoin system, transaction fees serve as an incentive for blockchain confirmations. In general, a transaction with a higher fee is likely to be included in the next block mined, whereas a transaction with a smaller fee or no fee may be delayed or never processed at all. However, the transaction fee needs to be specified when submitting a transaction and almost cannot be altered thereafter. Hence it is indispensable to help a client set a reasonable fee, as a higher fee incurs over-spending and a lower fee could delay the confirmation. In this work, we focus on estimating the transaction fee for a new transaction to help with its confirmation within a given expected time. We identify two major drawbacks in the existing works. First, the current industry products are built on explicit analytical models, ignoring the complex interactions of different factors which could be better captured by machine learning based methods; Second, all of the existing works utilize limited knowledge for the estimation which hinders the potential of further improving the estimation quality. As a result, we propose a framework FENN, which aims to integrate the knowledge from a wide range of sources, including the transaction itself, unconfirmed transactions in the mempool and the blockchain confirmation environment, into a neural network model in order to estimate a proper transaction fee. Finally, we conduct experiments on real blockchain datasets to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed framework over the state-of-the-art works evaluated by MAPE and RMSE. Each variation model in our framework can finish training within one block interval, which shows the potential of our framework to process the realtime transaction updates in the Bitcoin blockchain.

DAWN: Matrix Operation-Optimized Algorithm for Shortest Paths Problem on Unweighted Graphs

The shortest paths problem is a fundamental challenge in graph theory, with a broad range of potential applications. The algorithms based on matrix multiplication exhibits excellent parallelism and scalability, but is constrained by high memory consumption and algorithmic complexity. Traditional shortest paths algorithms are limited by priority queues, such as BFS and Dijkstra algorithm, making the improvement of their parallelism a focal issue. We propose a matrix operation-optimized algorithm, which offers improved parallelism, reduced time complexity, and lower memory consumption. The novel algorithm requires $O(E_{wcc}(i))$ and $O(S_{wcc} \cdot E_{wcc})$ times for single-source and all-pairs shortest paths problems, respectively, where $S_{wcc}$ and $E_{wcc}$ denote the number of nodes and edges included in the largest weakly connected component in graph. To evaluate the effectiveness of the novel algorithm, we tested it using graphs from SuiteSparse Matrix Collection and Gunrock benchmark dataset. Our algorithm outperformed the BFS implementations from Gunrock and GAP (the previous state-of-the-art solution), achieving an average speedup of 3.769$\times$ and 9.410$\times$, respectively.

Structure-Guided Image Completion with Image-level and Object-level Semantic Discriminators

Structure-guided image completion aims to inpaint a local region of an image according to an input guidance map from users. While such a task enables many practical applications for interactive editing, existing methods often struggle to hallucinate realistic object instances in complex natural scenes. Such a limitation is partially due to the lack of semantic-level constraints inside the hole region as well as the lack of a mechanism to enforce realistic object generation. In this work, we propose a learning paradigm that consists of semantic discriminators and object-level discriminators for improving the generation of complex semantics and objects. Specifically, the semantic discriminators leverage pretrained visual features to improve the realism of the generated visual concepts. Moreover, the object-level discriminators take aligned instances as inputs to enforce the realism of individual objects. Our proposed scheme significantly improves the generation quality and achieves state-of-the-art results on various tasks, including segmentation-guided completion, edge-guided manipulation and panoptically-guided manipulation on Places2 datasets. Furthermore, our trained model is flexible and can support multiple editing use cases, such as object insertion, replacement, removal and standard inpainting. In particular, our trained model combined with a novel automatic image completion pipeline achieves state-of-the-art results on the standard inpainting task.

Minimal Clifford Shadow Estimation by Mutually Unbiased Bases

Predicting properties of large-scale quantum systems is crucial for the development of quantum science and technology. Shadow estimation is an efficient method for this task based on randomized measurements, where many-qubit random Clifford circuits are used for estimating global properties like quantum fidelity. Here we introduce the minimal Clifford measurement (MCM) to reduce the number of possible random circuits to the minimum, while keeping the effective post-processing channel in shadow estimation. In particular, we show that MCM requires $2^n+1$ distinct Clifford circuits, and it can be realized by Mutually Unbiased Bases (MUB), with $n$ as the total qubit number. By applying the Z-Tableau formalism, this ensemble of circuits can be synthesized to the $\mathrm{-S-CZ-H-}$ structure, which can be composed by $2n-1$ fixed circuit modules, and the total circuit depth is at most $n+1$. Compared to the original Clifford measurements, our MCM significantly reduces the circuit complexity and the compilation costs. In addition, we find the sampling advantage of MCM on estimating off-diagonal operators, and extend this observation to the biased-MCM scheme to enhance the sampling improvement further.

Experimental Hybrid Shadow Tomography and Distillation

Characterization of quantum states is a fundamental requirement in quantum science and technology. As a promising framework, shadow tomography shows significant efficiency in estimating linear functions, however, for the challenging nonlinear ones, it requires measurements at an exponential cost. Here, we implement an advanced shadow protocol, so-called hybrid shadow~(HS) tomography, to reduce the measurement cost in the estimation of nonlinear functions in an optical system. We design and realize a deterministic quantum Fredkin gate with single photon, achieving high process fidelity of $0.935\pm0.001$. Utilizing this novel Fredkin gate, we demonstrate HS in the estimations, like the higher-order moments up to 4, and reveal that the sample complexity of HS is significantly reduced compared with the original shadow protocol. Furthermore, we utilize these higher-degree functions to implement virtual distillation, which effectively extracts a high-purity quantum state from two noisy copies. The virtual distillation is also verified in a proof-of-principle demonstration of quantum metrology, further enhancing the accuracy of parameter estimation. Our results suggest that HS is efficient in state characterization and promising for quantum technologies.

Stability and noncentered PT symmetry of real topological phases

Real topological phases protected by the spacetime inversion (P T) symmetry are a current research focus. The basis is that the P T symmetry endows a real structure in momentum space, which leads to Z2 topological classifications in 1D and 2D. Here, we provide solutions to two outstanding problems in the diagnosis of real topology. First, based on the stable equivalence in K-theory, we clarify that the 2D topological invariant remains well defined in the presence of nontrivial 1D invariant, and we develop a general numerical approach for its evaluation, which was hitherto unavailable. Second, under the unit-cell convention, noncentered P T symmetries assume momentum dependence, which violates the presumption in previous methods for computing the topological invariants. We clarify the classifications for this case and formulate the invariants by introducing a twisted Wilson-loop operator for both 1D and 2D. A simple model on a rectangular lattice is constructed to demonstrate our theory, which can be readily realized using artificial crystals.

UniHuman: A Unified Model for Editing Human Images in the Wild

Human image editing includes tasks like changing a person's pose, their clothing, or editing the image according to a text prompt. However, prior work often tackles these tasks separately, overlooking the benefit of mutual reinforcement from learning them jointly. In this paper, we propose UniHuman, a unified model that addresses multiple facets of human image editing in real-world settings. To enhance the model's generation quality and generalization capacity, we leverage guidance from human visual encoders and introduce a lightweight pose-warping module that can exploit different pose representations, accommodating unseen textures and patterns. Furthermore, to bridge the disparity between existing human editing benchmarks with real-world data, we curated 400K high-quality human image-text pairs for training and collected 2K human images for out-of-domain testing, both encompassing diverse clothing styles, backgrounds, and age groups. Experiments on both in-domain and out-of-domain test sets demonstrate that UniHuman outperforms task-specific models by a significant margin. In user studies, UniHuman is preferred by the users in an average of 77% of cases. Our project is available at https://github.com/NannanLi999/UniHuman.

SparDL: Distributed Deep Learning Training with Efficient Sparse Communication

Top-k sparsification has recently been widely used to reduce the communication volume in distributed deep learning. However, due to the Sparse Gradient Accumulation (SGA) dilemma, the performance of top-k sparsification still has limitations. Recently, a few methods have been put forward to handle the SGA dilemma. Regrettably, even the state-of-the-art method suffers from several drawbacks, e.g., it relies on an inefficient communication algorithm and requires extra transmission steps. Motivated by the limitations of existing methods, we propose a novel efficient sparse communication framework, called SparDL. Specifically, SparDL uses the Spar-Reduce-Scatter algorithm, which is based on an efficient Reduce-Scatter model, to handle the SGA dilemma without additional communication operations. Besides, to further reduce the latency cost and improve the efficiency of SparDL, we propose the Spar-All-Gather algorithm. Moreover, we propose the global residual collection algorithm to ensure fast convergence of model training. Finally, extensive experiments are conducted to validate the superiority of SparDL.

Efficient Temporal Butterfly Counting and Enumeration on Temporal Bipartite Graphs

Bipartite graphs characterize relationships between two different sets of entities, like actor-movie, user-item, and author-paper. The butterfly, a 4-vertices 4-edges (2,2)-biclique, is the simplest cohesive motif in a bipartite graph and is the fundamental component of higher-order substructures. Counting and enumerating the butterflies offer significant benefits across various applications, including fraud detection, graph embedding, and community search. While the corresponding motif, the triangle, in the unipartite graphs has been widely studied in both static and temporal settings, the extension of butterfly to temporal bipartite graphs remains unexplored. In this paper, we investigate the temporal butterfly counting and enumeration problem: count and enumerate the butterflies whose edges establish following a certain order within a given duration. Towards efficient computation, we devise a non-trivial baseline rooted in the state-of-the-art butterfly counting algorithm on static graphs, further, explore the intrinsic property of the temporal butterfly, and develop a new optimization framework with a compact data structure and effective priority strategy. The time complexity is proved to be significantly reduced without compromising on space efficiency. In addition, we generalize our algorithms to practical streaming settings and multi-core computing architectures. Our extensive experiments on 11 large-scale real-world datasets demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of our solutions.
