FeedbackSTS-Det: Sparse Frames-Based Spatio-Temporal Semantic Feedback Network for Moving Infrared Small Target Detection

Infrared small target detection (ISTD) has been a critical technology in defense and civilian applications over the past several decades, such as missile warning, maritime surveillance, and disaster monitoring. Nevertheless, moving infrared small target detection still faces considerable challenges: existing models suffer from insufficient spatio-temporal semantic correlation and are not lightweight-friendly, while algorithms with strong scene generalization capability are in great demand for real-world applications. To address these issues, we propose FeedbackSTS-Det, a sparse frames-based spatio-temporal semantic feedback network. Our approach introduces a closed-loop spatio-temporal semantic feedback strategy with paired forward and backward refinement modules that work cooperatively across the encoder and decoder to enhance information exchange between consecutive frames, effectively improving detection accuracy and reducing false alarms. Moreover, we introduce an embedded sparse semantic module (SSM), which operates by strategically grouping frames by interval, propagating semantics within each group, and reassembling the sequence to efficiently capture long-range temporal dependencies with low computational overhead. Extensive experiments on many widely adopted multi-frame infrared small target datasets demonstrate the generalization ability and scene adaptability of our proposed network. Code and models are available at: https://github.com/IDIP-Lab/FeedbackSTS-Det.

Ultra low-cost fabrication of homogeneous alginate hydrogel microspheres in symmetry designed microfluidic device

In this study, we present a two-stage method for fabricating monodisperse alginate hydrogel microspheres using a symmetrically designed flow-focusing microfluidic device. One of the flow-focusing junctions generates alginate hydrogel droplets without the addition of surfactants, while the other junction introduces corn oil with acetic acid, which facilitates the solidification of the homogeneous alginate hydrogel droplets and prevents coalescence. These hydrogel microspheres can be easily separated from the oil phase using an oscillation state, eliminating the need for a demulsifier. This microfluidic system for hydrogel microsphere formation is notable for its simplicity, ease of fabrication, and user-friendliness.

On-chip 7 GHz acousto-optic modulators for visible wavelengths

A chip-integrated acousto-optic phase modulator tailored for visible optical wavelengths has been developed. Utilizing the lithium niobate on sapphire platform, the modulator employs a 7 GHz surface acoustic wave, excited by an interdigital transducer and aligned perpendicular to the waveguide. This design achieves efficient phase modulation of visible light within a compact device length of merely 200 microns, while holds the advantages of easy fabrication and high stability due to simple unsuspended structure. Remarkably, in this high-frequency acoustic regime, the acoustic wavelength becomes comparable to the optical wavelength, resulting in a notable single-sideband modulation behavior. This observation underscores the phase delay effects in the acousto-optics interactions, and opens up new aspects for realizing functional visible photonic devices and its integration with atom- and ion-based quantum platforms.

Angle-resolved broadband ferromagnetic resonance apparatus enabled through a spring-loaded sample mounting manipulator

Broadband ferromagnetic resonance is a useful technique to determine the magnetic anisotropy and study the magnetization dynamics of magnetic thin films. We report a spring-loaded sample loading manipulator for reliable sample mounting and rotation. The manipulator enables maximum signal, enhances system stability and is particularly useful for fully automated in-plane-field angle-resolved measurements. This angle-resolved broadband ferromagnetic resonance apparatus provides a viable method to study anisotropic damping and weak magnetic anisotropies, both vital for fundamental research and applications.

To Compress, or Not to Compress: Characterizing Deep Learning Model Compression for Embedded Inference

The recent advances in deep neural networks (DNNs) make them attractive for embedded systems. However, it can take a long time for DNNs to make an inference on resource-constrained computing devices. Model compression techniques can address the computation issue of deep inference on embedded devices. This technique is highly attractive, as it does not rely on specialized hardware, or computation-offloading that is often infeasible due to privacy concerns or high latency. However, it remains unclear how model compression techniques perform across a wide range of DNNs. To design efficient embedded deep learning solutions, we need to understand their behaviors. This work develops a quantitative approach to characterize model compression techniques on a representative embedded deep learning architecture, the NVIDIA Jetson Tx2. We perform extensive experiments by considering 11 influential neural network architectures from the image classification and the natural language processing domains. We experimentally show that how two mainstream compression techniques, data quantization and pruning, perform on these network architectures and the implications of compression techniques to the model storage size, inference time, energy consumption and performance metrics. We demonstrate that there are opportunities to achieve fast deep inference on embedded systems, but one must carefully choose the compression settings. Our results provide insights on when and how to apply model compression techniques and guidelines for designing efficient embedded deep learning systems.

Electrical switching of perpendicular magnetization in L10 FePt single layer

Electrical manipulation of magnetization is essential for integration of magnetic functionalities such as magnetic memories and magnetic logic devices into electronic circuits. The current induced spin-orbit torque (SOT) in heavy metal/ferromagnet (HM/FM) bilayers via the spin Hall effect in the HM and/or the Rashba effect at the interfaces provides an efficient way to switch the magnetization. In the meantime, current induced SOT has also been used to switch the in-plane magnetization in single layers such as ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As and antiferromagnetic metal CuMnAs with globally or locally broken inversion symmetry. Here we demonstrate the current induced perpendicular magnetization switching in L10 FePt single layer. The current induced spin-orbit effective fields in L10 FePt increase with the chemical ordering parameter (S). In 20 nm FePt films with high S, we observe a large charge-to-spin conversion efficiency and a switching current density as low as 7.0E6 A/cm2. We anticipate our findings may stimulate the exploration of the spin-orbit torques in bulk perpendicular magnetic anisotropic materials and the application of high-efficient perpendicular magnetization switching in single FM layer.

Structure resonance crossing in space charge dominated beams

As an extension of previous theoretical study on the coherent structure resonance due to space charge effects [Chao Li and R. A. Jameson, Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams 21, 024204, 2018], this paper aims to demonstrate how the beam, as a whole, is spontaneously affected when the predicted mixed coherent 2nd/4th order structure resonance stop band around $90^{\circ}$ phase advance is crossed. The beam characteristics during the structure resonance crossing, such as the rms emittance growth and the appearance of 2-fold/4-fold structure in phase space, are well explained by the mixture characteristic of different orders of structure resonance. The related `attracting' and `repulsive' effects in the structure resonance stop band from below and above crossing are considered as a natural beam reaction to the coherent structure resonance that the beam spontaneously moves to a structure resonance free region then the space charge takes a weaker importance. In the PIC simulation, it is found that the emittance growth is positively related to the time that the beam spends inside the structure resonance stop band. As a potential candidate mechanism, the incoherent particle-core resonance also has been checked. It is found that this incoherent resonance has basic difficulties in explaining the results obtained from the self-consistent PIC simulation. The incoherent particle-core resonance might lead to phase space distortion, emittance growth, or beam halo formation only on a long-time scale. This clarity of the discrepancies between coherent and incoherent resonance mechanisms will lead to a better understanding of the numerical study and experimental researches obtained recently. In addition, similar understanding can be extended to the study of higher order structure resonance.

Anisotropic Gilbert damping in perovskite La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ thin film

The viscous Gilbert damping parameter governing magnetization dynamics is of primary importance for various spintronics applications. Although, the damping constant is believed to be anisotropic by theories. It is commonly treated as a scalar due to lack of experimental evidence. Here, we present an elaborate angle dependent broadband ferromagnetic resonance study of high quality epitaxial La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ films. Extrinsic effects are suppressed and we show convincing evidence of anisotropic damping with twofold symmetry at room temperature. The observed anisotropic relaxation is attributed to the magnetization orientation dependence of the band structure. In addition, we demonstrated that such anisotropy can be tailored by manipulating the stain. This work provides new insights to understand the mechanism of magnetization relaxation.

Tunable magnetization relaxation of Fe_{2}Cr_{1-x}Co_{x}Si half-metallic Heusler alloys by band structure engineering

We report a systematic investigation on the magnetization relaxation properties of iron-based half-metallic Heusler alloy Fe$_{2}$Cr$_{1-x}$Co_${x}$Si (FCCS) thin films using broadband angular-resolved ferromagnetic resonance. Band structure engineering through Co doping (x) demonstrated by first-principles calculations is shown to tune the intrinsic magnetic damping over an order of magnitude, namely 0.01-0.0008. Notably, the intrinsic damping constants for samples with high Co concentration are among the lowest reported for Heusler alloys and even comparable to magnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet. Furthermore, a significant reduction of both isotropic and anisotropic contributions of extrinsic damping of the FCCS alloys was found in the FCCS films with x=0.5-0.75, which is of particular importance for applications. These results demonstrate a practical recipe to tailor functional magnetization for Heusler alloy-based spintronics at room temperature

A Monte-Carlo simulation of the equilibrium beam polarization in ultra-high energy electron (positron) storage rings

With the recently emerging global interest in building a next generation of circular electron-positron colliders to study the properties of the Higgs boson, and other important topics in particle physics at ultra-high beam energies, it is also important to pursue the possibility of implementing polarized beams at this energy scale. It is therefore necessary to set up simulation tools to evaluate the beam polarization at these ultra-high beam energies. In this paper, a Monte-Carlo simulation of the equilibrium beam polarization based on the Polymorphic Tracking Code(PTC) (Schmidt et al., 2002 [1]) is described. The simulations are for a model storage ring with parameters similar to those of proposed circular colliders in this energy range, and they are compared with the suggestion (Derbenev et al., 1978 [2]) that there are different regimes for the spin dynamics underlying the polarization of a beam in the presence of synchrotron radiation at ultra-high beam energies. In particular, it has been suggested that the so-called "correlated" crossing of spin resonances during synchrotron oscillations at current energies, evolves into "uncorrelated" crossing of spin resonances at ultra-high energies.

In this paper we will show a general method of how to make an optimized parameter design of a circular e+e- Higgs Factory by using analytical expression of maximum beam-beam parameter and beamstrahlung beam lifetime started from given design goal and technical limitations. A parameter space has been explored. Based on beam parameters scan and RF parameters scan, a set of optimized parameter designs for 50 km Circular Higgs Factory (CHF) with different RF frequency was proposed.

The beam energy calibration system for the BEPC-II collider

This document contains a proposal of the BEPC-II collider beam energy calibration system (IHEP, Beijing). The system is based on Compton backscattering of carbon dioxide laser radiation, producing a beam of high energy photons. Their energy spectrum is then accurately measured by HPGe detector. The high-energy spectrum edge will allow to determine the average electron or positron beam energy with relative accuracy about 3x10^-5.
