Calculation of the Pseudoscalar-Isoscalar Hadronic Current Correlation Functions of the Quark-Gluon Plasma

We report the results of calculations of pseudoscalar-isoscalar hadronic current correlators using the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model and the real-time finite-temperature formalism. Results are presented for the temperatures range 1.2 $\leq T/T_c\leq$ 6.0, where $T_c$ is the temperature of the confinement-deconfinement transition, which we take to be $T_c=170$ MeV. Two important resonant features are seen in our calculations. In order to understand the origin of these resonances, we have performed relativistic random phase approximation (RPA)calculations of the temperature-dependent spectrum of the $η$ mesons for $T<T_c$. For the RPA calculations, use is made of a simple model in which we introduce temperature- dependent constituent quark masses calculated in a mean-field approximation and a temperature-dependent confining interaction whose form is motivated by recent studies made using lattice simulations of QCD with dynamical quarks. We also introduce temperature-dependent coupling constants in our generalized NJL model. Our motivation in the latter case is the simulation of the approach to a weakly interacting system at high temperatures. We present some evidence that supports our use of temperature-dependent coupling constants for the NJL model. We suggest that our results may be of interest to researchers who use lattice simulations of QCD to obtain temperature dependent spectral functions for various hadronic current correlation functions.

Quark and Nucleon Self-Energy in Dense Matter

In a recent work we introduced a nonlocal version of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio(NJL) model that was designed to generate a quark self-energy in Euclidean space that was similar to that obtained in lattice simulations of QCD. In the present work we carry out related calculations in Minkowski space, so that we can study the effects of the significant vector and axial-vector interactions that appear in extended NJL models and which play an important role in the study of the $ρ$, $ω$ and $a_1$ mesons. We study the modification of the quark self-energy in the presence of matter and find that our model reproduces the behavior of the quark condensate predicted by the model-independent relation $<\bar qq>_ρ = <\bar qq>_0(1-σ_Nρ_N/f_π^2m_π^2 +...)$, where $σ_N$ is the pion-nucleon sigma term and $ρ_N$ is the density of nuclear matter. (Since we do not include a model of confinement, our study is restricted to the analysis of quark matter. We provide some discussion of the modification of the above formula for quark matter.) The inclusion of a quark current mass leads to a second-order phase transition for the restoration of chiral symmetry. That restoration is about 80% at twice nuclear matter density for the model considered in this work. We also find that the part of the quark self-energy that is explicitly dependent upon density has a strong negative Lorentz-scalar term and a strong positive Lorentz-vector term, which is analogous to the self-energy found for the nucleon in nuclear matter when one makes use of the Dirac equation for the nucleon. In this work we calculate the nucleon self -energy in nuclear matter using our model of the quark self-energy and obtain satisfactory results.

Quark Condensates and Momentum-Dependent Quark Masses in a Nonlocal Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Model

The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model has been extensively studied by many researchers. In previous work we have generalized the NJL model to include a covariant model of confinement. In the present work we consider further modification of the model so as to reproduce the type of Euclidean-space momentum- dependent quark mass values obtained in lattice simulations of QCD. This may be done by introducing a nonlocal interaction, while preserving the chiral symmetry of the Lagrangian. In other work on nonlocal models, by other researchers, the momentum dependence of the quark self-energy is directly related to the regularization scheme. In contrast, in our work, the regularization is independent of the nonlocality we introduce. It is of interest to note that the value of the condensate ratio, $<\bar{s}s>/<\bar{u}d>$, is about 1.7 when evaluated using chiral perturbation theory and is only about 1.1 in standard applications of the NJL model. We find that our nonlocal model can reproduce the larger value of the condensate ratio when reasonable values are used for the strength of the 't Hooft interaction. (In an earlier study of the $η$(547) and $η$'(958) mesons, we found that use of the larger value of the condensate ratio led to a very good fit to the mixing angles and decay constants of these mesons.) We also study the density dependence of both the quark condensate and the momentum-dependent quark mass values. Without the addition of new parameters, we reproduce the density dependence of the condensate given by a well-known model- independent expression valid for small baryon density.
