A strong multiplicity one theorem for SL(2)

It is known that multiplicity one property holds for SL(2), while the strong multiplicity one property fails. However, in this paper, we show that if we require further that a pair of cuspidal representations $π$ and $π'$ of SL(2) have the same local components at archimedean places and the places above 2, and they are generic with respect to the same additive character, then they also satisfy the strong multiplicity one property. The proof is based on a local converse theorem for SL(2).

A local converse theorem for U(1,1)

In this paper, we define a $γ$-factor for generic representations of $\RU(1,1)\times \Res_{E/F}(\GL_1)$ and prove a local converse theorem for $\RU(1,1)$ using the $γ$-factor we defined. We also give a new proof of the local converse theorem for $\GL_2$ using a $γ$-factor of $\GL_2\times \GL_2$ type which was originally defined by Jacquet in \cite{J}.

Mean-Variance Type Controls Involving a Hidden Markov Chain: Models and Numerical Approximation

Motivated by applications arising in networked systems, this work examines controlled regime-switching systems that stem from a mean-variance formulation. A main point is that the switching process is a hidden Markov chain. An additional piece of information, namely, a noisy observation of switching process corrupted by white noise is available. We focus on minimizing the variance subject to a fixed terminal expectation. Using the Wonham filter, we convert the partially observed system to a completely observable one first. Since closed-form solutions are virtually impossible be obtained, a Markov chain approximation method is used to devise a computational scheme. Convergence of the algorithm is obtained. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the results.

Single-Layer MoS2 Phototransistors

A new phototransistor based on the mechanically-exfoliated single-layer MoS2 nanosheet is fabricated and its light-induced electric properties are investigated in details. Photocurrent generated from the phototransistor is solely determined by the illuminated optical power at a constant drain or gate voltage. The switching behavior of photocurrent generation and annihilation can be completely finished within ca. 50 ms and it shows good stability. Especially, the single-layer MoS2 phototransistor exhibits a better photoresponsivity as compared with the graphene-based device. The unique characteristics of incident-light control, prompt photoswitching and good photoresponsivity from the MoS2 phototransistor pave an avenue to develop the single-layer semiconducting materials for multi-functional optoelectronic device applications in future.

When to sell a Markov chain asset?

This paper is concerned with an optimal stock selling rule under a Markov chain model. The objective is to find an optimal stopping time to sell the stock so as to maximize an expected return. Solutions to the associated variational inequalities are obtained. Closed-form solutions are given in terms of a set of threshold levels. Verification theorems are provided to justify their optimality. Finally, numerical examples are reported to illustrate the results.

Weak Convergence Methods for Approximation of Path-dependent Functionals

This paper provides convergence analysis for the approximation of a class of path-dependent functionals underlying a continuous stochastic process. In the first part, given a sequence of weak convergent processes, we provide a sufficient condition for the convergence of the path-dependent functional underlying weak convergent processes to the functional of the original process. In the second part, we study the weak convergence of Markov chain approximation to the underlying process when it is given by a solution of stochastic differential equation. Finally, we combine the results of the two parts to provide approximation of option pricing for discretely monitoring barrier option underlying stochastic volatility model. Different from the existing literatures, the weak convergence analysis is obtained by means of metric computations in the Skorohod topology together with the continuous mapping theorem. The advantage of this approach is that the functional under study may be a function of stopping times, projection of the underlying diffusion on a sequence of random times, or maximum/minimum of the underlying diffusion.

An Optimal Pairs-Trading Rule

This paper is concerned with a pairs trading rule. The idea is to monitor two historically correlated securities. When divergence is underway, i.e., one stock moves up while the other moves down, a pairs trade is entered which consists of a pair to short the outperforming stock and to long the underperforming one. Such a strategy bets the "spread" between the two would eventually converge. In this paper, a difference of the pair is governed by a mean-reverting model. The objective is to trade the pair so as to maximize an overall return. A fixed commission cost is charged with each transaction. In addition, a stop-loss limit is imposed as a state constraint. The associated HJB equations (quasi-variational inequalities) are used to characterize the value functions. It is shown that the solution to the optimal stopping problem can be obtained by solving a number of quasi-algebraic equations. We provide a set of sufficient conditions in terms of a verification theorem. Numerical examples are reported to demonstrate the results.

Junctionless dual-gate electrostatic modulation of self-aligned oxide channels by chitosan-based proton conductors

Dual-gate electrostatic modulation gives an attractive approach for transistors performance improvement, threshold voltage (Vth) and operation mode modulation, which is favorable for chemical sensor and logic applications. Here, a self-aligned junctionless semiconducting oxide channels are dual-gate electrostatic modulated by solution-processed chitosan-based proton conductors on paper substrates. The low-voltage junctionless paper transistors can be effectively tuned from depletion mode to enhancement mode by the second in-plane gate. OR logic gate was experimentally demonstrated on such dual-in-plane gate junctionless transistors. Such dual-gate organic/inorganic hybrid paper transistors are promising for portable paper electronics.

Gated Conductance of Thin Indium Tin Oxide - The Simplest Transistor

Transistors are the fundamental building block of modern electronic devices. So far, all transistors are based on various types of semiconductor junctions. The most common bipolar-junction transistors and metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors contain p-n junctions to control the current, depending on applied biases across the junctions. Thin-film transistors need metal-semiconductor junctions for injecting and extracting electrons from their channels. Here, by coating a heavily-doped thin indium-tin-oxide (ITO) film through a shadow mask onto a biopolymer chitosan/ITO/glass substrate, we can have a high-performance junctionless transparent organic-inorganic hybrid thin film transistor. This could be the simplest transistor in the world, to our knowledge, not only in its structure, but also its fabrication process. In addition, the device performance is found to be greatly enhanced using a reinforced chitosan/SiO2 hybrid bilayer dielectric stack. Our results clearly show that this architecture can lead to a new class of low-cost transistors.

STIS Spectroscopy of Young Star Clusters in "The Antennae" Galaxies (NGC 4038/4039)

Long-slit spectra of several dozen young star clusters have been obtained at three positions in the Antennae galaxies with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and its 52"x0.2" slit. Based on H-alpha emission-line measurements, the average cluster-to-cluster velocity dispersion in 7 different cluster aggregates ("knots") is <10 \kms. The fact that this upper limit is similar to the velocity dispersion of gas in the disks of typical spiral galaxies suggests that the triggering mechanism for the formation of young massive compact clusters ("super star clusters") is unlikely to be high velocity cloud-cloud collisions. On the other hand, models where preexisting giant molecular clouds in the disks of spiral galaxies are triggered into cluster formation are compatible with the observed low velocity dispersions. These conclusions are consistent with those reached by Zhang et al. (2001) based on comparisons between the positions of the clusters and the velocity and density structure of the nearby interstellar medium. We find evidence for systematically lower values of the line ratios [NII]/H-alpha and [SII]/H-alpha in the bright central regions of some of the knots, relative to their outer regions. This suggests that the harder ionizing photons are used up in the regions nearest the clusters, and the diffuse ionized gas farther out is photoionized by 'leakage' of the leftover low-energy photons. The low values of the [SII]/H-alpha line ratio, typically [SII]/H-alpha<0.4, indicates that the emission regions are photoionized rather than shock heated. The absence of evidence for shock-heated gas is an additional indication that high velocity cloud-cloud collisions are not playing a major role in the formation of the young clusters.

Dynamical Evolution of the Mass Function of Globular Star Clusters

We present a series of simple, largely analytical models to compute the effects of disruption on the mass function of star clusters. Our calculations include evaporation by two-body relaxation and gravitational shocks and mass loss by stellar evolution. We find that, for a wide variety of initial conditions, the mass function develops a turnover or peak and that, after 12 Gyr, this is remarkably close to the observed peak for globular clusters, at M_p = 2 10^5 solar masses. Below the peak, the evolution is dominated by two-body relaxation, and the mass function always develops a tail of the form psi(M) = const, reflecting that the masses of tidally limited clusters decrease linearly with time just before they are destroyed. This also agrees well with the empirical mass function of globular clusters in the Milky Way. Above the peak, the evolution is dominated by stellar evolution at early times and gravitational shocks at late times. These processes shift the mass function to lower masses while nearly preserving its shape. The radial variation of the mass function within a galaxy depends on the initial position-velocity distribution of the clusters. We find that some radial anisotropy in the initial velocity distribution, especially when this increases outward, is needed to account for the observed near-uniformity of the mass functions of globular clusters. This may be consistent with the observed near-isotropy of the present velocity distributions because clusters on elongated orbits are preferentially destroyed. These results are based on models with static, spherical galactic potentials. We point out that there would be even more radial mixing of the orbits and hence more uniformity of the mass function if the galactic potentials were time-dependent and/or non-spherical.

A Multi-Wavelength Study of the Young Star Clusters and Interstellar Medium in the Antennae Galaxies (NGC 4038/9)

We report on a multi-wavelength study of the relationship between young star clusters in the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/9) and their interstellar environment, with the goal of understanding the formation and feedback effects of star clusters in merging galaxies. This is possible for the first time because various new observations (from X-rays to radio wavelengths) have become available in the past several years. Quantitative comparisons are made between the positions of the star clusters (broken into three age groups) and the properties of the interstellar medium by calculating the two-point correlation functions. We find that young star clusters are distributed in a clustered fashion. The youngest star clusters are associated with molecular cloud complexes with characteristic radii of about 1 kpc. In addition, there is a weak tendency for them to be found in regions with higher HI velocity dispersions. No dominant triggering mechanism is identified for the majority of the clusters in the Antennae. Feedback from young bright cluster complexes show large H_alpha bubbles and H_alpha velocity gradients in shells around the complexes. We estimate the current star formation rate to be 20 solar mass/yr, and the gas consumption timescale to be 700 Myr. The latter is comparable to the merging time scale and indicates that star formation has been enchanced by the merger event. Finally, we find that the Schmidt law, with index N=-1.4, is also a good description of the cluster formation triggered by merging in the Antennae. There is some evidence that feedback effects may modify the Schmidt law at scales below 1 kpc.

Formation and Disruption of Globular Star Clusters

In the first part of this article, we review observations of the mass and luminosity functions of young and old star cluster systems. We also review some of the physical processes that may determine the characteristic mass of globular clusters and the form of their mass function. In the second part of this article, we summarize our models for the disruption of clusters and the corresponding evolution of the mass function. Much of our focus here is on understanding why the mass function of globular clusters has no more than a weak dependence on radius within their host galaxies.

Hydrogen-enhanced local plasticity in aluminum: an ab initio study

Dislocation core properties of Al with and without H impurities are studied using the Peierls-Nabarro model with parameters determined by ab initio calculations. We find that H not only facilitates dislocation emission from the crack tip but also enhances dislocation mobility dramatically, leading to macroscopically softening and thinning of the material ahead of the crack tip. We observe strong binding between H and dislocation cores, with the binding energy depending on dislocation character. This dependence can directly affect the mechanical properties of Al by inhibiting dislocation cross-slip and developing slip planarity.

The Mass Function of Young Star Clusters in the "Antennae" Galaxies

We determine the mass function of young star clusters in the merging galaxies the ``Antennae'' (NGC 4038/39) from deep images taken with the WFPC2 on the refurbished Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This is accomplished by means of reddening-free parameters and a comparison with stellar population synthesis tracks to estimate the intrinsic luminosity and age and hence the mass of each cluster. We find that the mass function of the young star clusters (with ages <~ 160 Myr) is well represented by a power law of the form psi(M) ~ M^{-2} over the range 10^4 < M < 10^6 solar masses. This result may have important implications for our understanding of the origin of globular clusters during the early phases of galactic evolution.

The Luminosity Function of Young Star Clusters In "The Antennae" Galaxies (NGC 4038/4039)

The WFPC2 of the HST has been used to obtain high-resolution images of NGC 4038/4039 that go roughly 3 magnitudes deeper in V than previous observations made during Cycle 2 (-14 < M_V < -6). To first order the luminosity function (LF) is a power law, with exponent α= -2.12 +/- 0.04. However, after decoupling the cluster and stellar LFs, which overlap in the range -9 < M_V < -6, we find an apparent bend in the young cluster LF at approximately M_V = -10.4. The LF has a power law exponent -2.6 +/- 0.2 in the brightward and -1.7 +/- 0.2 in the faintward. The bend corresponds to a mass ~ 10^5 M_{\odot}, only slightly lower than the characteristic mass of globular clusters in the Milky Way (~2x10^5 M_{\odot}). The star clusters of the Antennae appear slightly resolved, with median effective radii of 4 +/- 1 pc, similar to or perhaps slightly larger than those of globular clusters in our Galaxy. However, the radial extents of some of the very young clusters (ages < 10 Myr) are much larger than those of old globular clusters. A combination of the UBVI colors, \Halpha morphology, and GHRS spectra enables us to age-date the clusters in different regions of The Antennae. We find two groups of young star clusters with ages <~ 20Myr and ~100Myr, as well as an intermediate-age group (~500 Myr) and a handful of old globular clusters from the progenitor galaxies. Age estimates derived from GHRS spectroscopy yield 3 +/- 1 Myr for Knot K (just south of the nucleus of NGC 4038) and 7 +/- 1 Myr for Knot S in the Western Loop, in good agreement with ages derived from the UBVI colors. Effective gas-outflow velocities from Knots S and K are estimated to be about 25-30 km/s. However, the measured widths of the interstellar absorption lines suggest dispersion velocities of ~400 km/s along the lines of sight to Knots S and K.
