Theory of Spectrum in Qubit-Oscillator Systems in the Ultrastrong Coupling Regime

Recent measurement on an LC resonator magnetically coupled to a superconducting qubit[arXiv:1005.1559] shows that the system operates in the ultra-strong coupling regime and crosses the limit of validity for the rotating-wave approximation of the Jaynes-Cummings model. By using extended bosonic coherent states, we solve the Jaynes-Cummings model exactly without the rotating-wave approximation. Our numerically exact results for the spectrum of the flux qubit coupled to the LC resonator are fully consistent with the experimental observations. The smallest Bloch-Siegert shift obtained is consistent with that observed in this experiment. In addition, the Bloch-Siegert shifts in arbitrary level transitions and for arbitrary coupling constants are predicted.

Entanglement dynamics of two independent Jaynes-Cummings atoms without rotating-wave approximation

Entanglement evolution of two independent Jaynes-Cummings atoms without rotating-wave approximation (RWA) is studied by an numerically exact approach. The previous results in the RWA are essentially modified in the strong coupling regime ($g\ge 0.1$), which has been reached in the recent experiments on the flux qubit coupled to the LC resonator. For the initial Bell state with anti-correlated spins, the entanglement sudden death (ESD) is absent in the RWA, but does appear in the present numerical calculation without RWA. Aperiodic entanglement evolution in the strong coupling regime is observed. The strong atom-cavity coupling facilitates the ESD. The sign of detuning play a essential role in the entanglement evolution for strong coupling, which is irrelevant in the RWA. An analytical results based on an unitary transformation are also given, which could not modify the RWA picture essentially. It is suggested that the activation of the photons may be the origin of the ESD. The present theoretical results could be applied to artificial atoms realized in recent experiments.

Quantum phase transitions in coupled two-level atoms in a single-mode cavity

The dipole-coupled two-level atoms(qubits) in a single-mode resonant cavity is studied by extended bosonic coherent states. The numerically exact solution is presented. For finite systems, the first-order quantum phase transitions occur at the strong interatomic interaction. Similar to the original Dicke model, this system exhibits a second-order quantum phase transition from the normal to the superradiant phases. Finite-size scaling for several observables, such as the average fidelity susceptibility, the order parameter, and concurrence are performed for different interatomic interactions. The obtained scaling exponents suggest that interatomic interactions do not change the universality class.

Quantum Phase Transition in the Sub-Ohmic Spin-Boson Model: Extended Coherent-state Approach

We propose a general extended coherent state approach to the qubit (or fermion) and multi-mode boson coupling systems. The application to the spin-boson model with the discretization of a bosonic bath with arbitrary continuous spectral density is described in detail, and very accurate solutions can be obtained. The quantum phase transition in the nontrivial sub-Ohmic case can be located by the fidelity and the order-parameter critical exponents for the bath exponents $s<1/2$ can be correctly given by the fidelity susceptibility, demonstrating the strength of the approach.

Terahertz wave emission from mesoscopic crystals of BSCCO

We study the Terahertz (THz) emission mechanism in BSCCO with an external magnetic field theoretically. The total power is proportional to the square of the number of layers and the frequency. Under the small size limitation, the angular distribution is similar to that in the dipole emission. The present theoretical results for THz power output are in the same order of magnitude as the experimental ones, in contrast with previous simulations. A series of size-dependent intrinsic frequencies are also observed. When the external frequency induced by the external current resonates with intrinsic ones, the distinct THz emission is observed.

Quantum phase transition of the one-dimensional compass model in a transverse magnetic field

The quantum phase transition (QPT) of the one-dimensional (1D) quantum compass model in a transverse magnetic field is studied in this paper. An exact solution is obtained by using an extended Jordan and Wigner transformation to the pseudo-spin operators. The fidelity susceptibility, the concurrence, the block-block entanglement entropy, and the pseudo-spin correlation functions are calculated with antiperiodic boundary conditions. The QPT driven by the transverse field only emerges at zero field and is of the second-order. Several critical exponents obtained by finite size scaling analysis are the same as those in the 1D transverse field Ising model, suggesting the same universality class. A logarithmic divergence of the entanglement entropy of a block at the quantum critical point is also observed. From the calculated coefficient connected to the central charge of the conformal field theory, it is suggested that the block entanglement depends crucially on the detailed topological structure of a system.

Large-N scaling behavior of the ground-state energy and fidelity in the Dicke Model

Within the numerically exact solution to the Dicke model proposed previously, we study the quantum criticality in terms of the ground-state (GS) energy, fidelity, and the order parameter. The finite size scaling analysis for the average fidelity susceptibility (FS) and second derivative of GS energy are performed. The correlation length exponent is obtained to be $ν=2/3$, which is the same as that in Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model obtained previously, suggesting the same universality. It is observed that average FS and second derivative of GS energy show similar critical behavior, demonstrating the intrinsic relation in the Dicke model. The scaling behavior for the order parameter and the singular part of the GS energy at the critical point are also analyzed and the obtained exponents are consistent with the previous scaling hypothesis in 1/N expansion scheme.

Vortex-lattice melting in magnesium diboride in terms of the elastic theory

In the framework of elastic theory, we study the vortex-lattice melting transitions in magnesium diboride for magnetic fields both parallel and perpendicular to the anisotropy axis. Using the parameters from experiments, the vortex-lattice melting lines in the H-T diagram are located systematically by various groups of Lindemann numbers and the anisotropic parameters. It is observed that the theoretical result for the vortex melting with parallel and perpendicular fields agrees well with the experimental data.

Quantum phase transition in the one-dimensional period-two and uniform compass model

Quantum phase transition in the one-dimensional period-two and uniform quantum compass model are studied by using the pseudo-spin transformation method and the trace map method. The exact solutions are presented, the fidelity, the nearest-neighbor pseudo-spin entanglement, spin and pseudo-spin correlation functions are then calculated. At the critical point, the fidelity and its susceptibility change substantially, the gap of pseudo-spin concurrence is observed, which scales as $1/N$ (N is system size). The spin correlation functions show smooth behavior around the critical point. In the period-two chain, the pseudo-spin correlation functions exhibit a oscillating behavior, which is absent in the unform chain. The divergent correlation length at the critical point is demonstrated in the general trend for both cases.

Elastic theory for the vortex-lattice melting in iron-based high-Tc superconductors

The vortex-lattice melting transitions in two typical iron-based high-Tc superconductor $Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_{2}As_{2}$ (122-type) and$Nd(O_{1-x}F_{x})FeAs$ (1111-type) for magnetic fields both parallel and perpendicular to the anisotropy axis are studied within the elastic theory. Using the parameters from experiments, the vortex-lattice melting lines in the H-T diagram are located systematically by various groups of Lindemann numbers. It is observed that the theoretical result for the vortex melting on $Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})_{2}As_{2}$ for parallel fields agrees well the recent experimental data. The future experimental results for the vortex melting can be compared with the present theoretical prediction by tuning reasonable Lindemann numbers.

Phase transition in site-diluted Josephson junction arrays: A numerical study

We numerically investigate the intriguing effects produced by random percolative disorder in two-dimensional Josephson-junction arrays. By dynamic scaling analysis, we evaluate critical temperatures and critical exponents with high accuracy. It is observed that, with the introduction of site-diluted disorder, the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition is eliminated and evolves into a continuous transition with power-law divergent correlation length. Moreover, genuine depinning transition and creep motion are studied, evidence for distinct creep motion types is provided. Our results not only are in good agreement with the recent experimental findings, but also shed some light on the relevant phase transitions.

Berry Phase and Fidelity in the Dicke model with $A^{2}$ term

The instability, so-called the quantum-phase-like transition, in the Dicke model with a rotating-wave approximation for finite $N$ atoms is investigated in terms of the Berry phase and the fidelity. It can be marked by the discontinuous behavior of these quantities as a function of the atom-field coupling parameter. Involving an additional field $A^{2}$ term, it is observed that the instability is not eliminated beyond the characteristic atom-field coupling parameter even for strong interaction of the bosonic fields, contrarily to the previous studies.

Dynamics of glass phases in the two-dimensional gauge glass model

Large-scale simulations have been performed on the current-driven two-dimensional XY gauge glass model with resistively-shunted-junction dynamics. It is observed that the linear resistivity at low temperatures tends to zero, providing strong evidence of glass transition at finite temperature. Dynamic scaling analysis demonstrates that perfect collapses of current-voltage data can be achieved with the glass transition temperature $T_{g}=0.22$, the correlation length critical exponent $ν=1.8$, and the dynamic critical exponent $ z=2.0$. A genuine continuous depinning transition is found at zero temperature. For creeping at low temperatures, critical exponents are evaluated and a non-Arrhenius creep motion is observed in the glass phase.

Nernst effect in the two-dimensional XY model

We calculate the Nernst signal directly in the phenomenological two-dimensional XY model. The obtained numerical results are consistent with the experimental observations in some high-Tc cuprate superconductors qualitatively, where the vortex Nernst signal has a characteristic tilt-hill profile. It is suggested that the excitations of vortex and anti-vortex in 2D is the possible origin of the anomalous Nernst effect.

Noise spectra of stochastic pulse sequences: application to large scale magnetization flips in the finite size 2D Ising model

We provide a general scheme to predict and derive the contribution to the noise spectrum of a stochastic sequence of pulses from the distribution of pulse parameters. An example is the magnetization noise spectra of a 2D Ising system near its phase transition. At $T\le T_c$, the low frequency spectra is dominated by magnetization flips of nearly the entire system. We find that both the predicted and the analytically derived spectra fit those produced from simulations. Subtracting this contribution leaves the high frequency spectra which follow a power law set by the critical exponents.

Flux-lattice melting in LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs: first-principles prediction

We report the theoretical study of the flux-lattice melting in the novel iron-based superconductor $LaO_{0.9}F_{0.1}FeAs$ and $LaO_{0.925}F_{0.075}FeAs$. Using the Hypernetted-Chain closure and an efficient algorithm, we calculate the two-dimensional one-component plasma pair distribution functions, static structure factors and direct correlation functions at various temperatures. The Hansen-Verlet freezing criterion is shown to be valid for vortex-liquid freezing in type-II superconductors. Flux-lattice meting lines for $LaO_{0.9}F_{0.1}FeAs$ and $LaO_{0.925}F_{0.075}FeAs$ are predicted through the combination of the density functional theory and the mean-field substrate approach.

Dynamics of vortex glass phase in strongly type II superconductors

Dynamics of vortices in strongly type-II superconductors with strong disorder is investigated within the frustrated three-dimensional XY model. For two typical models in [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 91}, 077002 (2003)] and [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 68}, 220502(R) (2003)], a strong evidence for the finite temperature vortex glass transition in the unscreened limit is provided by performing large-scale dynamical simulations. The obtained correlation length exponents and the dynamic exponents in both models are different from each other and from those in the three-dimensional gauge glass model. In addition, a genuine continuous depinning transition is observed at zero temperature for both models. A scaling analysis for the thermal rounding of the depinning transition shows a non-Arrhenius type creep motion in the vortex glass phase, contrarily to the recent studies..

Accurate numerical solution to the finite-size Dicke model

By using extended bosonic coherent states, a new technique to solve the Dicke model exactly is proposed in the numerical sense. The accessible system size is two orders of magnitude higher than that reported in literature. Finite-size scaling for several observables, such as the ground-state energy, Berry phase, and concurrence are analyzed. The existing discrepancy for the scaling exponent of the concurrence is reconciled.
