Electronic Structure and Topology in Gulf-edged Zigzag Graphene Nanoribbons

With advanced synthetic techniques, a wide variety of well-defined graphene nano-ribbons (GNRs) can be produced with atomic precision. Hence, finding the relation between their structures and properties becomes important for the rational design of GNRs. In this work, we explore the complete chemical space of gulf-edged zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNR-Gs), a subclass of zigzag GNRs in which the zigzag edges miss carbon atoms in a regular sequence. We demonstrate that the electronic properties of ZGNR-Gs depend on four structural parameters: ribbon width, gulf edge size, unit length, and gulf offset. Using tight-binding calculations and the Hubbard model, we find that all ZGNR-Gs are semiconductors with varying band gaps; there are no metals in this class of materials. Notably, when spin polarization is considered, most ZGNR-Gs exhibit antiferromagnetic behavior, with the spin moments and spin-induced band gap opening being stabilized by longer zigzag segments at the edges. Furthermore, we provide simple empirical rules that describe the Z2 topological invariant based on the aforementioned structural parameters. By analyzing the full chemical space of ZGNR-Gs, we offer insights into the design of GNRs with desired electronic, magnetic, and topological properties for nanoelectronic applications.

Pseudo-mass parameterized alchemical equation: a generalisation of the molecular Schrödinger equation

We introduce a pseudo-mass parameterized Schrödinger-like alchemical equation which contains nuclear charges as variables, treating nuclear charges, nuclear coordinates and electronic coordinates on the equal footing. The eigenfunctions of the alchemical equation are the wave functions of nuclear charges, just like conventional wave functions are of coordinates. A mathematical definition of alchemical function space is given to hold the ''nuclear charge wave function''. The geometric phase of alchemical dynamics and alchemical phase space are also derived. For hydrogen-like ion, the alchemical equation can be simplified into a strong repulsive inverse square potential equation, which refers to the quantum anomaly and keeps conformal invariance in non-relativistic quantum mechanics. An extension of the Hellmann-Feynman theorem, which applies to the non-stationary state in time-dependent clamped-nuclear-charge alchemical dynamics, is also proved.

The influence of complex thermal treatment on mechanical properties of amorphous materials

We study the effect of periodic, spatially uniform temperature variation on mechanical properties and structural relaxation of amorphous alloys using molecular dynamics simulations. The disordered material is modeled via a non-additive binary mixture, which is annealed from the liquid to the glassy state with various cooling rates and then either aged at constant temperature or subjected to thermal treatment. We found that in comparison to aged samples, thermal cycling with respect to a reference temperature of approximately half the glass transition temperature leads to more relaxed states with lower levels of potential energy. The largest energy decrease was observed for rapidly quenched glasses cycled with the thermal amplitude slightly smaller than the reference temperature. Following the thermal treatment, the mechanical properties were probed via uniaxial tensile strain at the reference temperature and constant pressure. The numerical results indicate an inverse correlation between the levels of potential energy and values of the elastic modulus and yield stress as a function of the thermal amplitude.
