Timing analysis of Swift J1658.2-4242's outburst in 2018 with Insight-HXMT, NICER and AstroSat

We present the observational results from a detailed timing analysis of the black hole candidate Swift J1658.2-4242 during its 2018 outburst with the observations of Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT), Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) and AstroSat in 0.1-250keV. The evolution of intensity, hardness and integrated fractional root mean square (rms) observed by Insight-HXMT and NICER are presented in this paper. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed by NICER (0.8-3.5Hz) and Insight-HXMT (1-1.6Hz) are also reported in this work. The features of the QPOs are analysed with an energy range of 0.5-50keV. The relations between QPO frequency and other characteristics such as intensity, hardness and QPO rms are carefully studied. The timing and spectral properties indicate that Swift J1658.2-4242 is a black hole binary system. Besides, the rms spectra of the source calculated from the simultaneous observation of Insight-HXMT, NICER and AstroSat support the Lense-Thirring origin of the QPOs. The relation between QPO phase lag and the centroid frequency of Swift J1658.2-4242 reveals a near zero constant when < 4Hz and a soft phase lag at 6.68 Hz. This independence follows the same trend as the high inclination galactic black hole binaries such as MAXI J1659-152.

Long term variability of Swift J1753.5-0127]{Long term variability of Swift J1753.5-0127: X-ray spectral-temporal correlations during state transitions

We studied the long-term evolution of the spectral-temporal correlated properties of the black hole candidate Swift J1753.5-0127 from the onset of its outburst until 2011 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The source stayed most of its lifetime during hard state, with occasionally transitioned to the hard intermediate state. Similar to typical black hole transients, Swift J1753.5-0127 traces a clear hard line in absolute rms - intensity diagram during the low hard state, with expected highest absolute rms, while shows a clear turn during the hard intermediate state, accompanied by lower absolute rms. Different from Cyg X-1, we found that frequency-dependent time lag increased significantly in the 0.02 -- 3.2 Hz band during state transition in this source. The X-ray time lags in 0.02 -- 3.2 Hz can therefore be used as indicators of state transition in this source. Type-C QPO frequency is positively related with its fractional rms and X-ray photon index, suggesting a moving inwards disk/corona scenario. We discussed the physical interpretation of our results in our paper.

Super-Eddington accretion onto the Galactic ultraluminous X-ray pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124

We report on the spectral behavior of the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray pulsar Swift J0243.6+6124 with NuSTAR observations during its 2017-2018 outburst. At sub-Eddington levels, the source spectrum is characterized by three emission components, respectively from the accretion column, the hot spot, and a broad iron line emission region. When the source is above the Eddington limit, the hot spot temperature increases and the spectrum features two more blackbody components. One blackbody component has a radius of 10-20 km and is likely originated from the top of the accretion column. The other one saturates at a blackbody luminosity of (1 - 2)*10^38 erg/s, coincident with the Eddington limit of a neutron star. This is well consistent with the scenario that super-Eddington accretion onto compact objects will power optically-thick outflows and indicates an accretion rate 60-80 times the critical value. This suggests that super-Eddington accretion onto magnetized systems can also power massive winds. At super-Eddington levels, the iron line becomes more significant and blueshifted, and is argued to be associated with the ultrafast wind in the central funnel or jets. This source, if located in external galaxies, will appear like other ultraluminous pulsars.

A Low-latency Pipeline for GRB Light Curve and Spectrum using Fermi/GBM Near Real-time Data

Rapid response and short time latency are very important for Time Domain Astronomy, such as the observations of Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) and electromagnetic (EM) counterparts of gravitational waves (GWs). Based on the near real-time Fermi/GBM data, we developed a low-latency pipeline to automatically calculate the temporal and spectral properties of GRBs. With this pipeline, some important parameters can be obtained, such as T90 and fluence, within ~20 minutes after the GRB trigger. For ~90% GRBs, T90 and fluence are consistent with the GBM catalog results within 2 sigma errors. This pipeline has been used by the Gamma-ray Bursts Polarimeter (POLAR) and the Insight Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) to follow up the bursts of interest. For GRB 170817A, the first EM counterpart of GW events detected by Fermi/GBM and INTEGRAL/SPI-ACS, the pipeline gave T90 and spectral information in 21 minutes after the GBM trigger, providing important information for POLAR and Insight-HXMT observations.

The NuSTAR View of a QPO Evolution of GRS 1915+105

We report a timing analysis of the black hole binary GRS 1915+105 with the NuSTAR observatory. A strong type-C QPO below 2 Hz appears in the power density spectrum during the whole observation, whose frequency is correlated with the 3-25 keV count rate. The QPO shows a sudden increase in frequency along with an increase in flux and a softening of the spectrum. We discuss the possible origin of the QPO and the reasons that lead to the QPO frequency variation. It is suggested that the reflection component has little influence on QPO frequency and the increase in QPO frequency could be associated with the inward motion of the outer part of the disk.

The accretion rate independence of horizontal branch oscillation in XTE J1701-462

We study the temporal and energy spectral properties of the unique neutron star low-mass X-ray binary XTE J1701-462. After assuming the HB/NB vertex as a reference position of accretion rate, the horizontal branch oscillation (HBO) of the HB/NB vertex is roughly 50 Hz. It indicates that the HBO is independent with the accretion rate or the source intensity. The spectral analysis shows $R_{\rm{in}}\propto\dot{M}_{\rm{Disk}}^{2.9\pm0.09}$ in the HB/NB vertex and $R_{\rm{in}}\propto\dot{M}_{\rm{Disk}}^{1.7\pm0.06}$ in the NB/FB vertex, which implies that different accretion rate may be produced in the HB/NB vertex and the NB/FB vertex. The Comptonization component could be fitted by constrained broken power law (CBPL) or nthComp. Different with GX 17+2, the frequencies of HBO positively correlate with the inner disk radius, which contradict with the prediction of Lense-Thirring precession model. XTE J1701-462, both in the Cyg-like phase and in the Sco-like phase, follows a positive correlation between the break frequency of broad band noise and the characteristic frequency of HBO, which is called the W-K relation. An anticorrelation between the frequency of HBO and photon energy is observed. Moreover, the rms of HBO increases with photon energy till ~10 keV. We discuss the possible origin of HBO from corona in XTE J1701-462.
