Rotatable Antenna-Empowered Wireless Networks: A Tutorial

Non-fixed flexible antenna architectures, such as fluid antenna system (FAS), movable antenna (MA), and pinching antenna, have garnered significant interest in recent years. Among them, rotatable antenna (RA) has emerged as a promising technology for enhancing wireless communication and sensing performance through flexible antenna orientation/boresight rotation. By enabling mechanical or electronic boresight adjustment without altering physical antenna positions, RA introduces additional spatial degrees of freedom (DoFs) beyond conventional beamforming. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive tutorial on the fundamentals, architectures, and applications of RA-empowered wireless networks. Specifically, we begin by reviewing the historical evolution of RA-related technologies and clarifying the distinctive role of RA among flexible antenna architectures. Then, we establish a unified mathematical framework for RA-enabled systems, including general antenna/array rotation models, as well as channel models that cover near- and far-field propagation characteristics, wideband frequency selectivity, and polarization effects. Building upon this foundation, we investigate antenna/array rotation optimization in representative communication and sensing scenarios. Furthermore, we examine RA channel estimation/acquisition strategies encompassing orientation scheduling mechanisms and signal processing methods that exploit multi-view channel observations. Beyond theoretical modeling and algorithmic design, we discuss practical RA configurations and deployment strategies. We also present recent RA prototypes and experimental results that validate the practical performance gains enabled by antenna rotation. Finally, we highlight promising extensions of RA to emerging wireless paradigms and outline open challenges to inspire future research.

Antenna Orientation Optimization for Rotatable Antenna-Enabled ISAC Systems

Non-fixed flexible antenna architectures, such as fluid antenna system (FAS), movable antenna (MA), and pinching antenna, have garnered significant interest in recent years. In this paper, we deploy a rotatable antenna (RA) array at the base station (BS) to improve the integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) performance by exploiting the additional spatial degrees of freedom (DoFs) introduced by antenna rotation. To enhance the sensing performance over an extended region containing a potential target while meeting the communication requirements of multiple users, we aim to maximize the minimum echo signal power within the sensing region, subject to required minimum communication rates of the users. For the special case of a single user and a point target, we show that the optimal orientation of all RAs is identical when both the communication user and the sensing target are located in the far-field region, and then derive a closed-form solution for the optimal RA pointing vector. For the general multi-user and extended-target case, we propose an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm that alternately optimizes the transmit beamforming for communication, the covariance matrix of the probing signal, and the pointing vectors of the RAs in an iterative manner. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed RA-enabled ISAC system can significantly outperform various benchmark schemes, including systems with array-wise rotation optimization and fixed antenna orientation.

Rotatable Antenna-Enabled Wireless Communication: Modeling and Optimization

Non-fixed flexible antenna architectures, such as fluid antenna system (FAS), movable antenna (MA), and pinching antenna, have garnered significant interest in recent years. In this paper, we propose a new rotatable antenna (RA) model to improve the performance of wireless communication systems. Different from conventional fixed antennas, the proposed RA system can flexibly and independently alter the boresight direction of each antenna via mechanical or electronic means to exploit new spatial degrees-of-freedom (DoFs). Specifically, we investigate an RA-enabled uplink communication system, where the receive beamforming and the boresight directions of all RAs at the base station (BS) are jointly optimized to maximize the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) among all the users. In the special single-user and free-space propagation setup, the optimal boresight directions of RAs are derived in closed form with the maximum-ratio combining (MRC) beamformer applied at the BS. In the general multi-user and multipath channel setup, we first propose an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm to alternately optimize the receive beamforming and the boresight directions of RAs in an iterative manner. Then, a two-stage algorithm that solves the formulated problem without the need for iteration is proposed to further reduce computational complexity. Moreover, we extend the channel model to incorporate polarization effects and frequency-selective fading while catering to antenna boresight rotation. Simulation results are provided to validate our analytical results and demonstrate that the proposed RA system can significantly improve the communication performance as compared to other benchmark schemes.

Energy-Efficient UAV-Enabled MEC Systems: NOMA, FDMA, or TDMA Offloading?

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled mobile edge computing (MEC) systems can use different multiple access schemes to coordinate multi-user task offloading. However, it is still unknown which scheme is the most energy-efficient, especially when the offloading blocklength is finite. To answer this question, this paper minimizes and compares the MEC-related energy consumption of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), and time division multiple access (TDMA)-based offloading schemes within UAV-enabled MEC systems, considering both infinite and finite blocklength scenarios. Through theoretically analysis of the minimum energy consumption required by these three schemes, two novel findings are presented. First, TDMA consistently achieves lower energy consumption than FDMA in both infinite and finite blocklength cases, due to the degrees of freedom afforded by sequential task offloading. Second, NOMA does not necessarily achieve lower energy consumption than FDMA when the offloading blocklength is finite, especially when the channel conditions and the offloaded task data sizes of two user equipments (UEs) are relatively symmetric. Furthermore, an alternating optimization algorithm that jointly optimizes the portions of task offloaded, the offloading times of all UEs, and the UAV location is proposed to solve the formulated energy consumption minimization problems. Simulation results verify the correctness of our analytical findings and demonstrate that the proposed algorithm effectively reduces MEC-related energy consumption compared to benchmark schemes that do not optimize task offloading portions and/or offloading times.

Rotatable Antenna-Enabled Secure Wireless Communication

Rotatable antenna (RA) is a promising technology that exploits new spatial degree-of-freedom (DoF) to improve wireless communication and sensing performance. In this letter, we investigate an RA-enabled secure communication system where confidential information is transmitted from an RA-based access point (AP) to a single-antenna legitimate user in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. We aim to maximize the secrecy rate by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming and the deflection angles of all RAs at the AP. Accordingly, we propose an efficient alternating optimization (AO) algorithm to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution in an iterative manner, where the generalized Rayleigh quotient-based beamforming is applied and the RAs' deflection angles are optimized by the successive convex approximation (SCA) technique. Our simulation results show that the proposed RA-enabled secure communication system achieves a significantly higher secrecy rate as compared to various benchmark schemes.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Aided Electromagnetic Stealth over Extended Regions

Compared to traditional electromagnetic stealth (ES) materials, which are effective only within specific frequencies and orientations, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) technology introduces a novel paradigm for achieving dynamic and adaptive ES by adapting its reflection pattern in real time to neutralize radar probing signals echoed back from the target. In this letter, we study an IRS-aided ES system mounted on an aerial target to evade radar detection admist uncertain/moving radar positions over an extended area. Specifically, we aim to optimize the IRS's passive reflection to minimize the maximum received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the target echo signal in the area. A semi-closed-form solution is derived by first discretizing the continuous spatial frequency deviation to approximate the semi-infinite reflection gain constraint and then leveraging the Lagrange dual method. Simulation results are provided to validate that the proposed IRS-aided ES strategy can consistently reduce the reflection gains for radars located across a large region.

Modeling and Optimization for Rotatable Antenna Enabled Wireless Communication

Fluid antenna system (FAS)/movable antenna (MA) has emerged as a promising technology to fully exploit the spatial degrees of freedom (DoFs). In this paper, we propose a new rotatable antenna (RA) model, as a simplified implementation of six-dimensional movable antenna (6DMA), to improve the performance of wireless communication systems. Different from conventional fixed antenna, the proposed RA system can independently and flexibly change the three-dimensional (3D) orientation/boresight of each antenna by adjusting its deflection angles to achieve desired channel realizations. Specifically, we study an RA-enabled uplink communication system, where the receive beamforming and the deflection angles of all RAs are jointly optimized to maximize the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) among all the users. In the special single-user and free-space propagation setup, the optimal deflection angles are derived in closed form with the maximum-ratio combining (MRC) beamformer applied at the base station (BS). In the general multi-user and multi-path setup, we propose an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm to alternately optimize the receive beamforming and the deflection angles in an iterative manner. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate that the proposed RA-enabled system can significantly outperform other benchmark schemes.
