Field of View Expansion for Resonant Beam Information and Power Transfer

Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) leverages lightwave as the wireless transmission medium, emerging as a promising technology in the future Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios. The use of retro-reflectors in constructing spatially separated laser resonators (SSLR) enables a self-aligning wireless transmission system with the self-reproducing resonant beam, i.e. resonant beam system (RBS). However, it's effective Field of View (FoV) is physically limited by the size of retroreflectors and still requires significant improvement. This restricts the transmitter from providing seamless wireless connectivity and power supply to receivers within a large dynamic movement range. In this paper, we propose an FoV-enlarged resonant beam system operating at a meter distance by incorporating a telescope. The telescope plays a crucial role in minimizing the extra loss inflicted on the gain medium, which typically arises from the deviation of the resonant beam within the cavity. Further, we construct the proposed telescope-based RBS and experimentally demonstrate that the design could expand the FoV to 28$^\circ$ over 1 m transmission distance is about triple that of the ordinary RBS design.

Resonant Beam Enabled DoA Estimation in Passive Positioning System

The rapid advancement of the next generation of communications and internet of things (IoT) technologies has made the provision of location-based services for diverse devices an increasingly pressing necessity. Localizing devices with/without intelligent computing abilities, including both active and passive devices is essential, especially in indoor scenarios. For traditional RF positioning systems, aligning transmission signals and dealing with signal interference in complex environments are inevitable challenges. Therefore, this paper proposed a new passive positioning system, the RF-band resonant beam positioning system (RF-RBPS), which achieves energy concentration and beam alignment by amplifying echoes between the base station (BS) and the passive target (PT), without the need for complex channel estimation and time-consuming beamforming and provides high-precision direction of arrival (DoA) estimation for battery-free targets using the resonant mechanism. The direction information of the PT is estimated using the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm at the end of BS. The feasibility of the proposed system is validated through theoretical analysis and simulations. Results indicate that the proposed RF-RBPS surpasses RF-band active positioning system (RF-APS) in precision, achieving millimeter-level precision at 2m within an elevation angle of 35$^\circ$, and an error of less than 3cm at 2.5m within an elevation angle of 35$^\circ$.

NoiseBoost: Alleviating Hallucination with Noise Perturbation for Multimodal Large Language Models

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) contribute a powerful mechanism to understanding visual information building on large language models. However, MLLMs are notorious for suffering from hallucinations, especially when generating lengthy, detailed descriptions for images. Our analysis reveals that hallucinations stem from the inherent summarization mechanism of large language models, leading to excessive dependence on linguistic tokens while neglecting vision information. In this paper, we propose NoiseBoost, a broadly applicable and simple method for alleviating hallucinations for MLLMs through the integration of noise feature perturbations. Noise perturbation acts as a regularizer, facilitating a balanced distribution of attention weights among visual and linguistic tokens. Despite its simplicity, NoiseBoost consistently enhances the performance of MLLMs across common training strategies, including supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning. Further, NoiseBoost pioneerly enables semi-supervised learning for MLLMs, unleashing the power of unlabeled data. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that NoiseBoost improves dense caption accuracy by 8.1% with human evaluation and achieves comparable results with 50% of the data by mining unlabeled data. Design and Performance of Resonant Beam Communications -- Part I: Quasi-Static Scenario

This two-part paper studies a point-to-point resonant beam communication (RBCom) system, where two separately deployed retroreflectors are adopted to generate the resonant beam between the transmitter and the receiver, and analyzes the transmission rate of the considered system under both the quasi-static and mobile scenarios. Part I of this paper focuses on the quasi-static scenario where the locations of the transmitter and the receiver are relatively fixed. Specifically, we propose a new information-bearing scheme which adopts a synchronization-based amplitude modulation method to mitigate the echo interference caused by the reflected resonant beam. With this scheme, we show that the quasi-static RBCom channel is equivalent to a Markov channel and can be further simplified as an amplitude-constrained additive white Gaussian noise channel. Moreover, we develop an algorithm that jointly employs the bisection and exhaustive search to maximize its capacity upper and lower bounds. Finally, numerical results validate our analysis. Part II of this paper discusses the performance of the RBCom system under the mobile scenario.

Design and Performance of Resonant Beam Communications -- Part II: Mobile Scenario

This two-part paper focuses on the system design and performance analysis for a point-to-point resonant beam communication (RBCom) system under both the quasi-static and mobile scenarios. Part I of this paper proposes a synchronization-based information transmission scheme and derives the capacity upper and lower bounds for the quasi-static channel case. In Part II, we address the mobile scenario, where the receiver is in relative motion to the transmitter, and derive a mobile RBCom channel model that jointly considers the Doppler effect, channel variation, and echo interference. With the obtained channel model, we prove that the channel gain of the mobile RBCom decreases as the number of transmitted frames increases, and thus show that the considered mobile RBCom terminates after the transmitter sends a certain number of frames without frequency compensation. By deriving an upper bound on the number of successfully transmitted frames, we formulate the throughput maximization problem for the considered mobile RBCom system, and solve it via a sequential parametric convex approximation (SPCA) method. Finally, simulation results validate the analysis of our proposed method in some typical scenarios.

Resonant Beam Communications: A New Design Paradigm and Challenges

Resonant beam communications (RBCom), which adopt oscillating photons between two separate retroreflectors for information transmission, exhibit potential advantages over other types of wireless optical communications (WOC). However, echo interference generated by the modulated beam reflected from the receiver affects the transmission of the desired information. To tackle this challenge, a synchronization-based point-to-point RBCom system is proposed to eliminate the echo interference, and the design for the transmitter and receiver is discussed. Subsequently, the performance of the proposed RBCom is evaluated and compared with that of visible light communications (VLC) and free space optical communications (FOC). Finally, future research directions are outlined and several implementation challenges of RBCom systems are highlighted.

High-Efficiency Resonant Beam Charging and Communication

With the development of Internet of Things (IoT), demands of power and data for IoT devices increase drastically. In order to resolve the supply-demand contradiction, simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) has been envisioned as an enabling technology by providing high-power energy transfer and high-rate data delivering concurrently. In this paper, we introduce a high-efficiency resonant beam (RB) charging and communication scheme. The scheme utilizes the semiconductor materials as gain medium, which has a better energy absorption capacity compared with the traditional solid-state one. Moreover, the telescope internal modulator (TIM) are adopted in the scheme which can concentrate beams to match the gain size, reducing the transmission loss. To evaluate the scheme SWIPT performance, we establish an analytical model and study the influence factors of its beam transmission, energy conversion, output power, and spectral efficiency. Numerical results shows that the proposed RB system can realize 16 W electric power output with 11 % end-to-end conversion efficiency, and support 18 bit/s/Hz spectral efficiency for communication.

ReForm-Eval: Evaluating Large Vision Language Models via Unified Re-Formulation of Task-Oriented Benchmarks

Recent years have witnessed remarkable progress in the development of large vision-language models (LVLMs). Benefiting from the strong language backbones and efficient cross-modal alignment strategies, LVLMs exhibit surprising capabilities to perceive visual signals and perform visually grounded reasoning. However, the capabilities of LVLMs have not been comprehensively and quantitatively evaluate. Most existing multi-modal benchmarks require task-oriented input-output formats, posing great challenges to automatically assess the free-form text output of LVLMs. To effectively leverage the annotations available in existing benchmarks and reduce the manual effort required for constructing new benchmarks, we propose to re-formulate existing benchmarks into unified LVLM-compatible formats. Through systematic data collection and reformulation, we present the ReForm-Eval benchmark, offering substantial data for evaluating various capabilities of LVLMs. Based on ReForm-Eval, we conduct extensive experiments, thoroughly analyze the strengths and weaknesses of existing LVLMs, and identify the underlying factors. Our benchmark and evaluation framework will be open-sourced as a cornerstone for advancing the development of LVLMs.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted Free Space Optical Information and Power Transfer

Free space optical (FSO) transmission has emerged as a key candidate technology for 6G to expand new spectrum and improve network capacity due to its advantages of large bandwidth, low electromagnetic interference, and high energy efficiency. Resonant beam operating in the infrared band utilizes spatially separated laser cavities to enable safe and mobile high-power energy and high-rate information transmission but is limited by line-of-sight (LOS) channel. In this paper, we propose a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted resonant beam simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system and establish an optical field propagation model to analyze the channel state information (CSI), in which LOS obstruction can be detected sensitively and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) transmission can be realized by changing the phased of resonant beam in RIS. Numerical results demonstrate that, apart from the transmission distance, the NLOS performance depends on both the horizontal and vertical positions of RIS. The maximum NLOS energy efficiency can achieve 55% within a transfer distance of 10m, a translation distance of $\pm$4mm, and rotation angle of $\pm$50°.

Graph Contrastive Learning with Multi-Objective for Personalized Product Retrieval in Taobao Search

In e-commerce search, personalized retrieval is a crucial technique for improving user shopping experience. Recent works in this domain have achieved significant improvements by the representation learning paradigm, e.g., embedding-based retrieval (EBR) and collaborative filtering (CF). EBR methods do not sufficiently exploit the useful collaborative signal and are difficult to learn the representations of long-tail item well. Graph-based CF methods improve personalization by modeling collaborative signal within the user click graph. However, existing Graph-based methods ignore user's multiple behaviours, such as click/purchase and the relevance constraint between user behaviours and items. In this paper, we propose a Graph Contrastive Learning with Multi-Objective (GCL-MO) collaborative filtering model, which solves the problems of weak relevance and incomplete personalization in e-commerce search. Specifically, GCL-MO builds a homogeneous graph of items and then optimizes a multi-objective function of personalization and relevance. Moreover, we propose a modified contrastive loss for multi-objectives graph learning, which avoids the mutual suppression among positive samples and thus improves the generalization and robustness of long-tail item representations. These learned item embeddings are then used for personalized retrieval by constructing an efficient offline-to-online inverted table. GCL-MO outperforms the online collaborative filtering baseline in both offline/online experimental metrics and shows a significant improvement in the online A/B testing of Taobao search.

Rethinking the Role of Pre-ranking in Large-scale E-Commerce Searching System

E-commerce search systems such as Taobao Search, the largest e-commerce searching system in China, aim at providing users with the most preferred items (e.g., products). Due to the massive data and limited time for response, a typical industrial ranking system consists of three or more modules, including matching, pre-ranking, and ranking. The pre-ranking is widely considered a mini-ranking module, as it needs to rank hundreds of times more items than the ranking under limited latency. Existing researches focus on building a lighter model that imitates the ranking model. As such, the metric of a pre-ranking model follows the ranking model using Area Under ROC (AUC) for offline evaluation. However, such a metric is inconsistent with online A/B tests in practice, so engineers have to perform costly online tests to reach a convincing conclusion. In our work, we rethink the role of the pre-ranking. We argue that the primary goal of the pre-ranking stage is to return an optimal unordered set rather than an ordered list of items because it is the ranking that determines the final exposures. Since AUC measures the quality of an ordered item list, it is not suitable for evaluating the quality of the output unordered set. This paper proposes a new evaluation metric called All-Scenario Hitrate (ASH) for pre-ranking. ASH is proven effective in the offline evaluation and consistent with online A/B tests based on numerous experiments in Taobao Search. We also introduce an all-scenario-based multi-objective learning framework (ASMOL), which improves the ASH significantly. Surprisingly, the new pre-ranking model can outperforms the ranking model when outputting thousands of items. The phenomenon validates that the pre-ranking stage should not imitate the ranking blindly. With the improvements in ASH consistently translating to online improvement, it makes a 1.2% GMV improvement on Taobao Search.

Delving into E-Commerce Product Retrieval with Vision-Language Pre-training

E-commerce search engines comprise a retrieval phase and a ranking phase, where the first one returns a candidate product set given user queries. Recently, vision-language pre-training, combining textual information with visual clues, has been popular in the application of retrieval tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel V+L pre-training method to solve the retrieval problem in Taobao Search. We design a visual pre-training task based on contrastive learning, outperforming common regression-based visual pre-training tasks. In addition, we adopt two negative sampling schemes, tailored for the large-scale retrieval task. Besides, we introduce the details of the online deployment of our proposed method in real-world situations. Extensive offline/online experiments demonstrate the superior performance of our method on the retrieval task. Our proposed method is employed as one retrieval channel of Taobao Search and serves hundreds of millions of users in real time.

Sensing with OFDM Waveform at mmWave Band based on Micro-Doppler Analysis

Joint communication and sensing (JCAS) technology has been regarded as one of the innovations in the 6G network. With the channel modeling proposed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) TR 38.901, this paper investigates the sensing capability using the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band with an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform. Based on micro-Doppler (MD) analysis, we present two case studies, i.e., fan speed detection and human activity recognition, to demonstrate the target modeling with micro-motions, backscattering signal construction, and MD signature extraction using an OFDM waveform at 28 GHz. Simulated signatures demonstrate distinct fan rotation or human motion, and waveform parameters that affect the MD signature extraction are analyzed. Simulation results draw the validity of the proposed modeling and simulation methods, which also aim to facilitate the generation of data sets for various JCAS applications.

MAKE: Vision-Language Pre-training based Product Retrieval in Taobao Search

Taobao Search consists of two phases: the retrieval phase and the ranking phase. Given a user query, the retrieval phase returns a subset of candidate products for the following ranking phase. Recently, the paradigm of pre-training and fine-tuning has shown its potential in incorporating visual clues into retrieval tasks. In this paper, we focus on solving the problem of text-to-multimodal retrieval in Taobao Search. We consider that users' attention on titles or images varies on products. Hence, we propose a novel Modal Adaptation module for cross-modal fusion, which helps assigns appropriate weights on texts and images across products. Furthermore, in e-commerce search, user queries tend to be brief and thus lead to significant semantic imbalance between user queries and product titles. Therefore, we design a separate text encoder and a Keyword Enhancement mechanism to enrich the query representations and improve text-to-multimodal matching. To this end, we present a novel vision-language (V+L) pre-training methods to exploit the multimodal information of (user query, product title, product image). Extensive experiments demonstrate that our retrieval-specific pre-training model (referred to as MAKE) outperforms existing V+L pre-training methods on the text-to-multimodal retrieval task. MAKE has been deployed online and brings major improvements on the retrieval system of Taobao Search.

Mobile Power Network for Ultimate Mobility without Battery Life Anxiety

Similar to the evolution from the wired Internet to mobile Internet (MI), the growing demand for power delivery anywhere and anytime appeals for power grid transformation from wired to mobile domain. We propose here the next generation of power delivery network -- mobile power network (MPN) for wireless power transfer within a mobile range from several meters to tens of meters. At first, we present the MPN's concept evolution and application scenarios. Then, we introduce the MPN's supporting technology, namely resonant beam charging (RBC). As a long-range wireless power transfer (WPT) method, RBC can safely deliver multi-Watt power to multiple devices concurrently. Meanwhile, the recent progress in RBC research has been summarized. Next, we specify the MPN's architecture to provide the wide-area WPT coverage. Finally, we discuss the MPN's features and challenges. MPN can enable the ultimate mobility by cutting the final cord of mobile devices, realizing the "last-mile" mobile power delivery.

Binocular Localization Using Resonant Beam

Locating mobile devices precisely in indoor scenarios is a challenging task because of the signal diffraction and reflection in complicated environments. One vital cause deteriorating the localization performance is the inevitable power dissipation along the propagation path of localization signals. In this paper, we propose a high-accuracy localization scheme based on the resonant beam system (RBS) and the binocular vision, i.e., binocular based resonant beam localization (BRBL). The BRBL system utilizes the energy-concentrated and self-aligned transmission of RBS to realize high-efficiency signal propagation and self-positioning for the target. The binocular method is combined with RBS to obtain the three-dimensional (3-D) coordinates of the target for the first time. To exhibit the localization mechanism, we first elaborate on the binocular localization model, including the resonant beam transmission analysis and the geometric derivation of the binocular method with RBS. Then, we establish the power model of RBS, and the signal and noise models of beam spot imaging, respectively, to analyse the performance of the BRBL system. Finally, the numerical results show an outstanding performance of centimeter level accuracy (i.e., $<5\mathrm{cm}$ in $0.4\mathrm{m}$ width and $0.4\mathrm{m}$ length effective range at $1\mathrm{m}$ vertical distance, $<13\mathrm{cm}$ in $0.6\mathrm{m}$ width and $0.6\mathrm{m}$ length effective range at $2\mathrm{m}$ vertical distance), which applies to indoor scenarios.

Multi-Objective Personalized Product Retrieval in Taobao Search

In large-scale e-commerce platforms like Taobao, it is a big challenge to retrieve products that satisfy users from billions of candidates. This has been a common concern of academia and industry. Recently, plenty of works in this domain have achieved significant improvements by enhancing embedding-based retrieval (EBR) methods, including the Multi-Grained Deep Semantic Product Retrieval (MGDSPR) model [16] in Taobao search engine. However, we find that MGDSPR still has problems of poor relevance and weak personalization compared to other retrieval methods in our online system, such as lexical matching and collaborative filtering. These problems promote us to further strengthen the capabilities of our EBR model in both relevance estimation and personalized retrieval. In this paper, we propose a novel Multi-Objective Personalized Product Retrieval (MOPPR) model with four hierarchical optimization objectives: relevance, exposure, click and purchase. We construct entire-space multi-positive samples to train MOPPR, rather than the single-positive samples for existing EBR models. We adopt a modified softmax loss for optimizing multiple objectives. Results of extensive offline and online experiments show that MOPPR outperforms the baseline MGDSPR on evaluation metrics of relevance estimation and personalized retrieval. MOPPR achieves 0.96% transaction and 1.29% GMV improvements in a 28-day online A/B test. Since the Double-11 shopping festival of 2021, MOPPR has been fully deployed in mobile Taobao search, replacing the previous MGDSPR. Finally, we discuss several advanced topics of our deeper explorations on multi-objective retrieval and ranking to contribute to the community.

Transmission Model for Resonant Beam SWIPT with Telescope Internal Modulator

To satisfy the long-range and energy self-sustaining communication needs of electronic devices in the Internet of Things (IoT), we introduce a simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system using the resonant beam that incorporates a telescope modulator inside a cavity for suppressing diffraction losses. We theoretically analyze power transfer in the resonant beam system with telescope internal modulator (TIM-RBS) considering the electromagnetic field propagation, the end-to-end (E2E) power transfer, and power and information reception. The numerical evaluation demonstrates that the TIM can effectively compress the beam spot, which allows the TIM-RBS to transmit energy twice as far as the RBS without TIM at higher power. Additionally, the largest transmission distance and maximum output power are proportional to the input power, and about 34m transmission distance, 4W electric power, and 12bps/Hz spectral efficiency can be achieved in the TIM-RBS with 200W input power. Hence, TIM-RBS can be considered as a promising option for realizing long-range, high-power, and high-rate SWIPT.
