Newton-based alternating methods for the ground state of a class of multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates

The computation of the ground states of special multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) can be formulated as an energy functional minimization problem with spherical constraints. It leads to a nonconvex quartic-quadratic optimization problem after suitable discretizations. First, we generalize the Newton-based methods for single-component BECs to the alternating minimization scheme for multi-component BECs. Second, the global convergent alternating Newton-Noda iteration (ANNI) is proposed. In particular, we prove the positivity preserving property of ANNI under mild conditions. Finally, our analysis is applied to a class of more general "multi-block" optimization problems with spherical constraints. Numerical experiments are performed to evaluate the performance of proposed methods for different multi-component BECs, including pseudo spin-1/2, anti-ferromagnetic spin-1 and spin-2 BECs. These results support our theory and demonstrate the efficiency of our algorithms.

The low-rank approximation of fourth-order partial-symmetric and conjugate partial-symmetric tensor

We present an orthogonal matrix outer product decomposition for the fourth-order conjugate partial-symmetric (CPS) tensor and show that the greedy successive rank-one approximation (SROA) algorithm can recover this decomposition exactly. Based on this matrix decomposition, the CP rank of CPS tensor can be bounded by the matrix rank, which can be applied to low rank tensor completion. Additionally, we give the rank-one equivalence property for the CPS tensor based on the SVD of matrix, which can be applied on the rank-one approximation for CPS tensors.

The decompositions and positive semidefiniteness of fourth-order conjugate partial-symmetric tensors with applications

Conjugate partial-symmetric (CPS) tensor is a generalization of Hermitian matrices. For the CPS tensor decomposition some properties are presented. For real CPS tensors in particular, we note the subtle difference from the complex case of the decomposition. In addition to traditional decompositions in the form of the sum of rank-one tensors, we focus on the orthogonal matrix decomposition of CPS tensors, which inherits nice properties from decomposition of matrices. It then induces a procedure that reobtain the CPS decomposable property of CPS tensors. We also discuss the nonnegativity of the quartic real-valued symmetric conjugate form corresponding to fourth-order CPS tensors in real and complex cases, and establish its relationship to different positive semidefiniteness based on different decompositions. Finally, we give some examples to illustrate the applications of presented propositions.

Newton-based methods for finding the positive ground state of Gross-Pitaevskii equations

The discretization of Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPE) leads to a nonlinear eigenvalue problem with eigenvector nonlinearity (NEPv). In this paper, we use two Newton-based methods to compute the positive ground state of GPE. The first method comes from the Newton-Noda iteration for saturable nonlinear Schrödinger equations proposed by Liu, which can be transferred to GPE naturally. The second method combines the idea of the Bisection method and the idea of Newton method, in which, each subproblem involving block tridiagonal linear systems can be solved easily. We give an explicit convergence and computational complexity analysis for it. Numerical experiments are provided to support the theoretical results.

Finding the Global Optimum of a Class of Quartic Minimization Problem

We consider a special nonconvex quartic minimization problem over a single spherical constraint, which includes the discretized energy functional minimization problem of non-rotating Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) as one of the important applications. Such a problem is studied by exploiting its characterization as a nonlinear eigenvalue problem with eigenvector nonlinearity (NEPv), which admits a unique nonnegative eigenvector, and this eigenvector is exactly the global minimizer to the quartic minimization. With these properties, any algorithm converging to the nonnegative stationary point of this optimization problem finds its global minimum, such as the regularized Newton (RN) method. In particular, we obtain the global convergence to global optimum of the inexact alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for this problem. Numerical experiments for applications in non-rotating BEC validate our theories.

Generalized Eigenvalue Complementarity Problem for Tensors

In this paper, the generalized eigenvalue complementarity problem for tensors (GEiCP-T) is addressed, which arises from the stability analysis of finite dimensional mechanical systems and find applications in differential dynamical systems. The general properties of the (GEiCP-T) have been studied. We establish its relationship with the generalized tensor eigenvalue problem. It follows that if exist, the number of $λ$-solutions can be bounded. We also give some sufficient conditions for the existence of the solution. In particular, there exists a unique solution of the (EiCP-T) (i.e., $J=[n]$) for irreducible nonnegative tensors. For the symmetric case, we derive a sufficient and necessary condition for the solvability of the (GEiCP-T) by reformulating it as a nonlinear program. It has also been proved that deciding the solvability of the (EiCP-T) is NP-hard in general. Moreover, a shifted projected power method is proposed to solve the symmetric (GEiCP-T). The monotonic convergence is also established. The numerical experiments demonstrate convergence behavior of our method and show that the algorithm presented is promising.

On some properties of nonnegative weakly irreducible tensors

In this paper, we mainly focus on how to generalize some conclusions from nonnegative irreducible tensors to nonnegative weakly irreducible tensors. To do so, a basic and important lemma is proven using new tools. First, we give the definition of stochastic tensors. Then we show that every nonnegative weakly irreducible tensor with spectral radius being one is diagonally similar to a unique weakly irreducible stochastic tensor. Based on it, we prove some important lemmas, which help us to generalize the results related. Some counterexamples are provided to show that some conclusions for nonnegative irreducible tensors do not hold for nonnegative weakly irreducible tensors.

An algorithm to find the spectral radius of nonnegative tensors and its convergence analysis

In this paper we propose an iterative algorithm to find out the spectral radius of nonnegative tensors. This algorithm is an extension of the smoothing method for finding the largest eigenvalue of a nonnegative matrix \cite{s14}. For nonnegative irreducible tensors, we establish the converges of the algorithm. Finally we report some numerical results and conclude this paper with some remarks.
