Random-walk shielding-potential viscosity model for warm dense metals

We develop a novel model, called the ``random-walk shielding-potential viscosity model'' (RWSP-VM) that introduces the statistics of random-walk ions and the Debye shielding effect to describe the viscosities of warm dense metals. The viscosities of several metals with low to high atomic number (Be, Al, Fe, and U) are calculated using the analytical expression of RWSP-VM. Additionally, we simulate the viscosities of Fe and Be by employing the Langevin molecular dynamics (MD) and classical MD, while the MD data for Al and U are obtained from a previous work. The results of the RWSP-VM are in good agreement with the MD results, which validates the proposed model. Furthermore, we compare the RWSP-VM with the one-component plasma model and Yukawa viscosity model and show that the three models yield results in excellent agreement with each other in the regime where the RWSP-VM is applicable. These results indicate that the RWSP-VM is a universal, accurate, and highly efficient model for calculating the viscosity of metals in the warm dense state. The code of the proposed RWSP-VM is provided, and it is envisaged that it will have broad application prospects in numerous fields.

Inspiraling streams of enriched gas observed around a massive galaxy 11 billion years ago

Stars form in galaxies, from gas that has been accreted from the intergalactic medium. Simulations have shown that recycling of gas-the reaccretion of gas that was previously ejected from a galaxy-could sustain star formation in the early Universe. We observe the gas surrounding a massive galaxy at redshift 2.3 and detect emission lines from neutral hydrogen, helium, and ionized carbon that extend 100 kiloparsecs from the galaxy. The kinematics of this circumgalactic gas is consistent with an inspiraling stream. The carbon abundance indicates that the gas had already been enriched with elements heavier than helium, previously ejected from a galaxy. We interpret the results as evidence of gas recycling during high-redshift galaxy assembly.

PDPU: An Open-Source Posit Dot-Product Unit for Deep Learning Applications

Posit has been a promising alternative to the IEEE-754 floating point format for deep learning applications due to its better trade-off between dynamic range and accuracy. However, hardware implementation of posit arithmetic requires further exploration, especially for the dot-product operations dominated in deep neural networks (DNNs). It has been implemented by either the combination of multipliers and an adder tree or cascaded fused multiply-add units, leading to poor computational efficiency and excessive hardware overhead. To address this issue, we propose an open-source posit dot-product unit, namely PDPU, that facilitates resource-efficient and high-throughput dot-product hardware implementation. PDPU not only features the fused and mixed-precision architecture that eliminates redundant latency and hardware resources, but also has a fine-grained 6-stage pipeline, improving computational efficiency. A configurable PDPU generator is further developed to meet the diverse needs of various DNNs for computational accuracy. Experimental results evaluated under the 28nm CMOS process show that PDPU reduces area, latency, and power by up to 43%, 64%, and 70%, respectively, compared to the existing implementations. Hence, PDPU has great potential as the computing core of posit-based accelerators for deep learning applications.

MAMMOTH-Subaru III. Ly$α$ Halo Extended to $\sim200$ kpc Identified by Stacking $\sim 3300$ Ly$α$ Emitters at $z=2.2-2.3$

In this paper, we present a Ly$α$ halo extended to $\sim200$ kpc identified by stacking $\sim 3300$ Ly$α$ emitters at $z=2.2-2.3$. We carry out imaging observations and data reduction with Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC). Our total survey area is $\sim12$ deg$^2$ and imaging depths are $25.5-27.0$ mag. Using the imaging data, we select 1,240 and 2,101 LAE candidates at $z=2.2$ and 2.3, respectively. We carry out spectroscopic observations of our LAE candidates and data reduction with Magellan/IMACS to estimate the contamination rate of our LAE candidates. We find that the contamination rate of our sample is low (8%). We stack our LAE candidates with a median stacking method to identify the Ly$α$ halo at $z=2$. We show that the Ly$α$ halo is extended to $\sim200$ kpc at a surface brightness level of $10^{-20}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ arcsec$^{-2}$. Comparing to previous studies, our Ly$α$ halo is more extended at radii of $\sim25-100$ kpc, which is not likely caused by the contamination in our sample but by different redshifts and fields instead. To investigate how central galaxies affect surrounding LAHs, we divide our LAEs into subsamples based on the Ly$α$ luminosity ($L_{\rm Lyα}$), rest-frame Ly$α$ equivalent width (EW$_0$), and UV magnitude (M$_{\rm uv}$). We stack the subsamples and find that higher $L_{\rm Lyα}$, lower EW$_0$, and brighter M$_{\rm uv}$ cause more extended halos. Our results suggest that more massive LAEs generally have more extended Ly$α$ halos.

MAMMOTH-Subaru V. Effects of Cosmic Variance on Ly$α$ Luminosity Functions at $z=2.2-2.3$

Cosmic variance introduces significant uncertainties into galaxy number density properties when surveying the high-z Universe with a small volume, such uncertainties produce the field-to-field variance of galaxy number $σ_{g}$ in observational astronomy. This uncertainty significantly affects the Luminosity Functions (LF) measurement of Lya Emitters (LAEs). For most previous Lya LF studies, $σ_{g}$ is often adopted from predictions by cosmological simulations, but barely confirmed by observations. Measuring cosmic variance requires a huge sample over a large volume, exceeding the capabilities of most astronomical instruments. In this study, we demonstrate an observational approach for measuring the cosmic variance contribution for $z\approx2.2$ Lya LFs. The LAE candidates are observed using narrowband and broadband of the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC), with 8 independent fields, making the total survey area $\simeq11.62$deg$^2$ and a comoving volume of $\simeq8.71\times10^6$Mpc$^3$. These eight fields are selected using the project of MAMMOTH. We report a best-fit Schechter function with parameters $α=-1.75$ (fixed), $L_{Lyα}^{*}=5.18_{-0.40}^{+0.43} \times 10^{42}$erg s$^{-1}$ and $ϕ_{Lya}^{*}=4.87_{-0.55}^{+0.54}\times10^{-4}$Mpc$^{-3}$ for the overall Lya LFs. After clipping out the regions that can bias the cosmic variance measurements, we calculate $σ_{g}$, by sampling LAEs within multiple pointings assigned on the field image. We investigate the relation between $σ_{g}$ and survey volume $V$, and fit a simple power law: $σ_g=k\times(\frac{V_{\rm eff}}{10^5 {\rm Mpc}^3})^β$. We find best-fit values of $-1.209_{-0.106}^{+0.106}$ for $β$ and $0.986_{-0.100}^{+0.108}$ for k. We compare our measurements with predictions from simulations and find that the cosmic variance of LAEs might be larger than that of general star-forming galaxies.

An Energy Optimized Specializing DAG Federated Learning based on Event Triggered Communication

Specializing Directed Acyclic Graph Federated Learning(SDAGFL) is a new federated learning framework which updates model from the devices with similar data distribution through Directed Acyclic Graph Distributed Ledger Technology (DAG-DLT). SDAGFL has the advantage of personalization, resisting single point of failure and poisoning attack in fully decentralized federated learning. Because of these advantages, the SDAGFL is suitable for the federated learning in IoT scenario where the device is usually battery-powered. To promote the application of SDAGFL in IoT, we propose an energy optimized SDAGFL based event-triggered communication mechanism, called ESDAGFL. In ESDAGFL, the new model is broadcasted only when it is significantly changed. We evaluate the ESDAGFL on a clustered synthetically FEMNIST dataset and a dataset from texts by Shakespeare and Goethe's works. The experiment results show that our approach can reduce energy consumption by 33\% compared with SDAGFL, and realize the same balance between training accuracy and specialization as SDAGFL.

Secure bound analysis of quantum key distribution with non-uniform random seed of privacy amplification

Precise quantum key distribution (QKD) secure bound analysis is essential for practical QKD systems. The effect of uniformity of random number seed for privacy amplification is not considered in existing secure bound analysis. In this paper, we propose and prove the quantum leftover hash lemma with non-uniform random number seeds based on the min-entropy, and we give a precise QKD secure bound analysis with non-uniform random number seeds on this basis. We take the two-decoy BB84 protocol as an example to simulate the effect of random number seed uniformity on the secure bound of a QKD system. The experimental results indicate that when the average min-entropy of the random number generator is below 0.95, the secure bound of a QKD system will be seriously affected.

An Efficient Routing Protocol for Quantum Key Distribution Networks

Quantum key distribution (QKD) can provide point-to-point information-theoretic secure key services for two connected users. In fact, the development of QKD networks needs more focus from the scientific community in order to broaden the service scale of QKD technology to deliver end-to-end secure key services. Of course, some recent efforts have been made to develop secure communication protocols based on QKD. However, due to the limited key generation capability of QKD devices, high quantum secure key utilization is the major concern for QKD networks. Since traditional routing techniques do not account for the state of quantum secure keys on links, applying them in QKD networks directly will result in underutilization of quantum secure keys. Therefore, an efficient routing protocol for QKD networks, especially for large-scale QKD networks, is desperately needed. In this study, an efficient routing protocol based on optimized link-state routing, namely QOLSR, is proposed for QKD networks. QOLSR considerably improves quantum key utilization in QKD networks through link-state awareness and path optimization. Simulation results demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed QOLSR routing protocol. Most importantly, with the growth of communication traffic, the benefit becomes even more apparent.

An Information-theoretical Secured Byzantine-fault Tolerance Consensus in Quantum Key Distribution Network

Quantum key distribution (QKD) networks is expected to provide information-theoretical secured (ITS) communication over long distances. QKD networks based trusted relay architecture are now the most widely used scheme in practice. However, it is an unrealistic assumption that all relays are fully trustable in complex networks. In the past, only a few studies have theoretically analyzed the case of passive eavesdropping attack by dishonest relays and corresponding defense method. However, we have found that active attacks by dishonest relays can be more threatening. With the consideration of passive and active attacks, we treat dishonest relays as Byzantine nodes and analyzes the upper limit of Byzantine nodes that the QKD network can accommodate. In this paper, we propose an ITS Byzantine-fault tolerance (BFT) QKD network scheme to achieve end-to-end key distribution based on point-to-point QKD links. To ensure consistency and provide BFT ability in the QKD network, we design an ITSBFT-consensus protocol for this network scheme. To ensure the information-theoretic security of consensus, we design a temporary signature scheme based on point-to-point QKD link keys. To prevent Byzantine nodes from disrupting the execution process of key distribution, we design an end-to-end key distribution scheme combined with consensus. We theoretically analyze proposed ITSBFT-QKD network scheme from four aspects: QKD key distribution security, temporary signature security, consensus security, and leader election fairness. The simulation result proved the feasibility and demonstrate the performance.

Exploring the radio spectral energy distribution of the ultraluminous radio-quiet quasar SDSS J0100+2802 at redshift 6.3

We report deep Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations of the optically ultraluminous and radio-quiet quasar SDSS J010013.02 + 280225.8 (hereafter J0100+2802) at redshift $z=$6.3. We detected the radio continuum emission at 1.5 GHz, 6 GHz, and 10 GHz. This leads to a radio power-law spectral index of $α= -0.52\pm0.18$ ($S \propto ν^α$). The radio source is unresolved in all VLA bands with an upper limit to the size of $0.2^{\prime \prime}$ (i.e., $\sim$ 1.1 kpc) at 10 GHz. We find variability in the flux density (increase by $\sim 33\%$) and the spectral index (steepened) between observations in 2016 and 2017. We also find that the VLA 1.5 GHz flux density observed in the same year is 1.5 times that detected with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) in 2016 at the same frequency. This difference suggests that half of the radio emission from J0100+2802 comes from a compact core within 40 pc, and the rest comes from the surrounding few kpc area which is diffuse and resolved out in the VLBA observations. The diffuse emission is four times brighter than that would be expected if driven by star formation. We conclude that the central active galactic nucleus is the dominant power engine of the radio emission in J0100+2802.

Constraining galaxy overdensities around three z~6.5 quasars with ALMA and MUSE

We quantify galaxy overdensities around three high-redshift quasars with known [CII] 158um companions: PJ231-20 (z=6.59), PJ308-21 (z=6.24) and J0305-3150 (z=6.61). Recent SCUBA2 imaging revealed the presence of 17 submillimeter galaxies (SMG) with sky separations $0.7'< θ< 2.4'$ from these three quasars. We present ALMA Band 6 follow-up observations of these SCUBA2-selected SMGs to confirm their nature and redshift. We also search for continuum-undetected [CII] emitters in the ALMA pointings and make use of archival MUSE observations to search for Lyman-$α$ Emitters (LAE) associated with the quasars. While most of the SCUBA2-selected sources are detected with ALMA in the continuum, no [CII] line emission could be detected, indicating that they are not at the quasar redshifts. Based on the serendipitous detection of CO 7-6 and [CI] emission lines, we find that four SMGs in the field of PJ231-20 are at z~2.4, which is coincident with the redshift of a Mg II absorber in the quasar rest-frame UV spectrum. We report the discovery of 2 LAEs within <0.6 cMpc of PJ231-20 at the same redshift, indicating a LAE overdensity around this quasar. Taken together, these observations provide new constraints on the large-scale excess of Lyman-$α$- and [CII]-emitting galaxies around z>6 quasars and suggest that only wide-field observations, such as MUSE, ALMA or JWST mosaics, can reveal a comprehensive picture of large-scale structure around quasars in the first billion years of the Universe.

A novel approach to reducing information leakage for quantum key distribution

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is an important branch of quantum information science as it holds promise for unconditionally secure communication. For QKD research, a central issue is to improve the final secure key rate (SKR) and the maximal transmission distance. To address this issue, most works focused on reducing the information leakage of QKD. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to further reduce the information leakage by specially considering the overlap between the information leakage of quantum part and post-processing part. The overlap means that the information leakage of post-processing part caused solely by multi-photon pulses is considered twice in previous studies, i.e., both in quantum part and post-processing part. Since the information carried by multi-photon pulses has been considered as completely known by Eve through the photon-number-splitting attack in quantum part, there is no need to consider it in post-processing part repetitively during the SKR calculation. Therefore, our approach can theoretically reduce the information leakage of a QKD protocol. Based on this idea, we derive the formulas to calculate the amount of information leakage for decoy-BB84 and sending-or-not-sending twin-field protocols. Simulation results for these two typical protocols also demonstrate that our approach evidently improves the SKR as well as the maximal transmission distance under practical experimental parameters.

Discovery of a protocluster core associated with an enormous Ly$α$ Nebula at $z = 2.3$

The MAMMOTH-1 nebula at $z=2.317$ is an enormous Ly$α$ nebula (ELAN) extending to a $\sim$440 kpc scale at the center of the extreme galaxy overdensity BOSS 1441. In this paper, we present observations of the $\rm CO(3-2)$ and 250 GHz dust-continuum emission from the MAMMOTH-1 using the IRAM NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array. Our observations show that $\rm CO(3-2)$ emission in this ELAN has not extended widespread emission into the circum- and inter-galactic media. We also find a remarkable concentration of six massive galaxies in $\rm CO(3-2)$ emission in the central $\sim$100 kpc region of the ELAN. Their velocity dispersions suggest a total halo mass of $M_{200c} \sim 10^{13.1} M_{\odot}$, marking a possible protocluster core associated with the ELAN. The peak position of the $\rm CO(3-2)$ line emission from the obscured AGN is consistent with the location of the intensity peak of MAMMOTH-1 in the rest-frame UV band. Its luminosity line ratio between the $\rm CO(3-2)$ and $\rm CO(1-0)$ $r_{3,1}$ is 0.61$\pm$0.17. The other five galaxies have $\rm CO(3-2)$ luminosities in the range of (2.1-7.1)$\times 10^9$ K $\rm km\,s^{-1}$ pc$^2$, with the star-formation rates derived from the 250GHz continuum of ($<$36)-224 $M_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$. Follow-up spectroscopic observations will further confirm more member galaxies and improve the accuracy of the halo mass estimation.

High performance reconciliation for practical quantum key distribution systems

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a promising technique for secure communication based on quantum mechanical principles. To improve the secure key rate of a QKD system, most studies on reconciliation primarily focused on improving the efficiency. With the increasing performance of QKD systems, the research priority has shifted to the improvement of both throughput and efficiency. In this paper, we propose a high performance solution of Cascade reconciliation, including a high-throughput-oriented framework and an integrated-optimization-oriented scheme. Benefiting from the fully utilizing computation and storage resources, effectively dealing with communication delays, the integrated-optimization-oriented parameters setting, etc., an excellent overall performance was achieved. Experimental results showed that, the throughput of up to 570Mbps with an efficiency of 1.038 was achieved, which, to our knowledge, was more than four times faster than any throughput previously demonstrated. Furthermore, throughputs on real data sets were capable of reaching up to 86Mbps even on embedded platforms. Additionally, our solution offers good adaptability to the fluctuating communication delay and quantum bit error rate (QBER). Based on our study, low performance (i.e. low power-consumption and cost-effective) CPU platforms will be sufficient for reconciliation in the existing and near-term QKD systems.

Knowledge Distillation via Instance-level Sequence Learning

Recently, distillation approaches are suggested to extract general knowledge from a teacher network to guide a student network. Most of the existing methods transfer knowledge from the teacher network to the student via feeding the sequence of random mini-batches sampled uniformly from the data. Instead, we argue that the compact student network should be guided gradually using samples ordered in a meaningful sequence. Thus, it can bridge the gap of feature representation between the teacher and student network step by step. In this work, we provide a curriculum learning knowledge distillation framework via instance-level sequence learning. It employs the student network of the early epoch as a snapshot to create a curriculum for the student network's next training phase. We carry out extensive experiments on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, SVHN and CINIC-10 datasets. Compared with several state-of-the-art methods, our framework achieves the best performance with fewer iterations.

Rotation Based Slice Error Correction Protocol for Continuous-variable Quantum Key Distribution and its Implementation with Polar Codes

Reconciliation is an essential procedure for continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD). As the most commonly used reconciliation protocol in short-distance CV-QKD, the slice error correction (SEC) allows a system to distill more than 1 bit from each pulse. However, its quantization efficiency is greatly affected by the noisy channel with a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which usually limits the secure distance to about 30 km. In this paper, an improved SEC protocol, named Rotation-based SEC (RSEC), is proposed through performing a random orthogonal rotation on the raw data before quantization, and deducing a new estimator for quantized sequences. Moreover, the RSEC protocol is implemented with polar codes. Experimental results show that the proposed protocol can reach up to a quantization efficiency of about 99\%, and maintains at around 96\% even at the relatively low SNRs $(0.5,1)$, which theoretically extends the secure distance to about 45 km. When implemented with the polar codes with block length of 16 Mb, the RSEC can achieve a reconciliation efficiency of above 95\%, which outperforms all previous SEC schemes. In terms of finite-size effects, we achieve a secret key rate of $7.83\times10^{-3}$ bits/pulse at a distance of 33.93 km (the corresponding SNR value is 1). These results indicate that the proposed protocol significantly improves the performance of SEC and is a competitive reconciliation scheme for the CV-QKD system.

Mass and Environment as Drivers of Galaxy Evolution. IV. On the Quenching of Massive Central Disk Galaxies in The Local Universe

The phenomenological study of evolving galaxy populations has shown that star forming galaxies can be quenched by two distinct processes: mass quenching and environment quenching (Peng et al. 2010). To explore the mass quenching process in local galaxies, we study the massive central disk galaxies with stellar mass above the Schechter characteristic mass. In Zhang et al. (2019), we showed that during the quenching of the massive central disk galaxies as their star formation rate (SFR) decreases, their molecular gas mass and star formation efficiency drop rapidly, but their HI gas mass remains surprisingly constant. To identify the underlying physical mechanisms, in this work we analyze the change during quenching of various structure parameters, bar frequency, and active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity. We find three closely related facts. On average, as SFR decreases in these galaxies: (1) they become progressively more compact, indicated by their significantly increasing concentration index, bulge-to-total mass ratio, and central velocity dispersion, which are mainly driven by the growth and compaction of their bulge component; (2) the frequency of barred galaxies increases dramatically, and at a given concentration index the barred galaxies have a significantly higher quiescent fraction than unbarred galaxies, implying that the galactic bar may play an important role in mass quenching; and (3) the "AGN" frequency increases dramatically from 10% on the main sequence to almost 100% for the most quiescent galaxies, which is mainly driven by the sharp increase of LINERs. These observational results lead to a self-consistent picture of how mass quenching operates.

Auction Based Clustered Federated Learning in Mobile Edge Computing System

In recent years, mobile clients' computing ability and storage capacity have greatly improved, efficiently dealing with some applications locally. Federated learning is a promising distributed machine learning solution that uses local computing and local data to train the Artificial Intelligence (AI) model. Combining local computing and federated learning can train a powerful AI model under the premise of ensuring local data privacy while making full use of mobile clients' resources. However, the heterogeneity of local data, that is, Non-independent and identical distribution (Non-IID) and imbalance of local data size, may bring a bottleneck hindering the application of federated learning in mobile edge computing (MEC) system. Inspired by this, we propose a cluster-based clients selection method that can generate a federated virtual dataset that satisfies the global distribution to offset the impact of data heterogeneity and proved that the proposed scheme could converge to an approximate optimal solution. Based on the clustering method, we propose an auction-based clients selection scheme within each cluster that fully considers the system's energy heterogeneity and gives the Nash equilibrium solution of the proposed scheme for balance the energy consumption and improving the convergence rate. The simulation results show that our proposed selection methods and auction-based federated learning can achieve better performance with the Convolutional Neural Network model (CNN) under different data distributions.
