High-speed Implementation of FFT-based Privacy Amplification on FPGA in Quantum Key Distribution

Privacy amplification (PA) is a vital procedure in quantum key distribution (QKD) to generate the secret key that the eavesdropper has only negligible information from the identical correcting key for the communicating parties. With the increase of repeat frequency of discrete-variable QKD (DV-QKD) system, the processing speed of PA has become the bottle neck restricting DV-QKD's secure key rate. The PA using Toeplitz-based Hash function is adopted widely because of its simplicity and parallel feature. Because this algorithm can be accelerated with Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), an improved scheme PA for Field-programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based on this is proposed. This paper improves the custom FFT-based algorithm by reducing the number of computations and read/write memory operations significantly. The correctness is verified when implemented in a Xilinx Virtex-6 FPGA. Meanwhile, the processing speed of improved scheme can nearly double the classical Toeplitz Hashing scheme on FPGA through the actual experiment.

Keck/Palomar Cosmic Web Imagers (KCWI/PCWI) Reveal an Enormous Ly$α$ Nebula in an Extremely Overdense QSO Pair Field at $z=2.45$

Enormous Ly$α$ nebulae (ELANe) represent the extrema of Ly$α$ nebulosities. They have detected extents of $>200$ kpc in Ly$α$ and Ly$α$ luminosities $>10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The ELAN population is an ideal laboratory to study the interactions between galaxies and the intergalactic/circumgalactic medium (IGM/CGM) given their brightness and sizes. The current sample size of ELANe is still very small, and the few $z\approx2$ ELANe discovered to date are all associated with local overdensities of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Inspired by these results, we have initiated a survey of ELANe associated with QSO pairs using the Palomar and Keck Cosmic Web Imagers (PCWI/KCWI). In this letter, we present our first result: the discovery of ELAN0101+0201 associated with a QSO pair at $z=2.45$. Our PCWI discovery data shows that, above a 2-$σ$ surface brightness of $1.2\times10^{-17}$ \sbunit, the end-to-end size of ELAN0101+0201 is $\gtrsim 232$ kpc. We have conducted follow-up observations using KCWI, resolving multiple Ly$α$ emitting sources within the rectangular field-of-view of $\approx 130\times165$ projected kpc$^2$, and obtaining their emission line profiles at high signal-to-noise ratios. Combining both KCWI and PCWI, our observations confirm that ELAN0101+0201 resides in an extremely overdense environment. Our observations further support that a large amount of cool ($T\sim10^4$K) gas could exist in massive halos (M$\gtrsim10^{13}$M$_\odot$) at $z\approx2$. Future observations on a larger sample of similar systems will provide statistics of how cool gas is distributed in massive overdensities at high-redshift and strongly constrain the evolution of the intracluster medium (ICM).

PRSP: A Plugin-based Framework for RDF Stream Processing

In this paper, we propose a plugin-based framework for RDF stream processing named PRSP. Within this framework, we can employ SPARQL query engines to process C-SPARQL queries with maintaining the high performance of those engines in a simple way. Taking advantage of PRSP, we can process large-scale RDF streams in a distributed context via distributed SPARQL engines. Besides, we can evaluate the performance and correctness of existing SPARQL query engines in handling RDF streams in a united way, which amends the evaluation of them ranging from static RDF (i.e., RDF graph) to dynamic RDF (i.e., RDF stream). Finally, within PRSP, we experimently evaluate the correctness and the performance on YABench. The experiments show that PRSP can still maintain the high performance of those engines in RDF stream processing although there are some slight differences among them.

Probing the interstellar medium and star formation of the Most Luminous Quasar at z=6.3

We report new IRAM/PdBI, JCMT/SCUBA-2, and VLA observations of the ultraluminous quasar SDSSJ010013.02+280225.8 (hereafter, J0100+2802) at z=6.3, which hosts the most massive supermassive black hole (SMBH) of 1.24x10^10 Msun known at z>6. We detect the [C II] 158 $μ$m fine structure line and molecular CO(6-5) line and continuum emission at 353 GHz, 260 GHz, and 3 GHz from this quasar. The CO(2-1) line and the underlying continuum at 32 GHz are also marginally detected. The [C II] and CO detections suggest active star formation and highly excited molecular gas in the quasar host galaxy. The redshift determined with the [C II] and CO lines shows a velocity offset of ~1000 km/s from that measured with the quasar Mg II line. The CO (2-1) line luminosity provides direct constraint on the molecular gas mass which is about (1.0+/-0.3)x10^10 Msun. We estimate the FIR luminosity to be (3.5+/-0.7)x10^12 Lsun, and the UV-to-FIR spectral energy distribution of J0100+2802 is consistent with the templates of the local optically luminous quasars. The derived [C II]-to-FIR luminosity ratio of J0100+2802 is 0.0010+/-0.0002, which is slightly higher than the values of the most FIR luminous quasars at z~6. We investigate the constraint on the host galaxy dynamical mass of J0100+2802 based on the [C II] line spectrum. It is likely that this ultraluminous quasar lies above the local SMBH-galaxy mass relationship, unless we are viewing the system at a small inclination angle.

Improved Fluid Perturbation Theory: Equation of state for Fluid Xenon

The traditional fluid perturbation theory is improved by taking electronic excitations and ionizations into account, in the framework of average ion spheres. It is applied to calculate the equation of state for fluid Xenon, which turns out in good agreement with the available shock data.

An analytical method for error analysis of GRACE-like missions based on spectral analysis

The aim of this paper is to present an analytical relationship between the power spectral density of GRACE-like mission measurements and the accuracies of the gravity field coefficients mainly from the point of view of theory of signal and system, which indicates the one-to-one correspondence between spherical harmonic error degree variances and frequencies of the measurement noise. In order to establish this relationship, the average power of the errors due to gravitational acceleration difference and the relationship between perturbing forces and range-rate perturbations are derived, based on the orthogonality property of associated Legendre functions and the linear orbit perturbation theory, respectively. This method provides a physical insight into the relation between mission parameters and scientific requirements. By taking GRACE-FO as the object of research, the effects of sensor noises and time variable gravity signals are analyzed. If LRI measurements are applied, a mission goal with a geoid accuracy of 7.4 cm at a spatial resolution of 101 km is reachable, whereas if the KBR measurement error model is applied, a mission goal with a geoid accuracy of 10.2 cm at a spatial resolution of 125 km is reachable. Based on the discussion of the spectral matching of instrument accuracies, an improvement in accuracy of accelerometers is necessary for the match between the range errors and accelerometer noises in the future mission. Temporal aliasing caused by the time variable gravity signals is also discussed by this method.

The Thermodynamical Instability Induced by Pressure Ionization in Fluid Helium

A systematic study of pressure ionization is carried out in the chemical picture by the example of fluid helium. By comparing the variants of the chemical model, it is demonstrated that the behavior of pressure ionization depends on the construction of the free energy function. In the chemical model with the Coulomb free energy described by the Padé interpolation formula, thermodynamical instability induced by pressure ionization is found to be manifested by a discontinuous drop or a continuous fall and rise along the pressure-density curve as well as the pressure-temperature curve, which is very much like the first order liquid-liquid phase transition of fluid hydrogen from the first principles simulations. In contrast, in the variant chemical model with the Coulomb free energy term empirically weakened, no thermodynamical instability is induced when pressure ionization occurs, and the resulting equation of state achieves good agreement with the first principles simulations of fluid helium.

Approximate Bayesian estimation in large coloured graphical Gaussian models

Distributed estimation methods have recently been used to compute the maximum likelihood estimate of the precision matrix for large graphical Gaussian models. Our aim, in this paper, is to give a Bayesian estimate of the precision matrix for large graphical Gaussian models with, additionally, symmetry constraints imposed by an underlying graph which is coloured. We take the sample posterior mean of the precision matrix as our estimate. We study its asymptotic behaviour under the regular asymptotic regime when the number of variables p is fixed and under the double asymptotic regime when both p and n grow to infinity. We show in particular, that when the number of parameters of the local models is uniformly bounded, the standard convergence rate we obtain for the asymptotic consistency, in the Frobenius norm, of our estimate of the precision matrix compares well with the rates in the current literature for the maximum likelihood estimate.

Bayesian precision matrix estimation for graphical Gaussian models with edge and vertex symmetries

Graphical Gaussian models with edge and vertex symmetries were introduced by \citet{HojLaur:2008} who also gave an algorithm to compute the maximum likelihood estimate of the precision matrix for such models. In this paper, we take a Bayesian approach to the estimation of the precision matrix. We consider only those models where the symmetry constraints are imposed on the precision matrix and which thus form a natural exponential family with the precision matrix as the canonical parameter. We first identify the Diaconis-Ylvisaker conjugate prior for these models and develop a scheme to sample from the prior and posterior distributions. We thus obtain estimates of the posterior mean of the precision matrix. Second, in order to verify the precision of our estimate, we derive the explicit analytic expression of the expected value of the precision matrix when the graph underlying our model is a tree, a complete graph on three vertices and a decomposable graph on four vertices with various symmetries. In those cases, we compare our estimates with the exact value of the mean of the prior distribution. We also verify the accuracy of our estimates of the posterior mean on simulated data for graphs with up to thirty vertices and various symmetries.

Efficient Bit Sifting Scheme of Post-processing in Quantum Key Distribution

Bit sifting is an important step in the post-processing of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) whose function is to sift out the undetected original keys. The communication traffic of bit sifting has essential impact on the net secure key rate of a practical QKD system, and it is facing unprecedented challenges with the fast increase of the repetition frequency of quantum channel. In this paper, we present an efficient bit sifting scheme whose core is a lossless source coding algorithm. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that the performance of our scheme is approaching the Shannon limit. Our scheme can greatly decrease the communication traffic of the post-processing of a QKD system, which means it can decrease the secure key consumption for classical channel authentication and increase the net secure key rate of the QKD system. Meanwhile, it can relieve the storage pressure of the system greatly, especially the device at Alice side. Some recommendations on the application of our scheme to some representative practical QKD systems are also provided.

Waveguide QED: controllable channel from quantum interference

We study a waveguide QED system with a rectangular waveguide and a two-level system (TLS) inside, where the transverse modes TMmn define the quantum channels of guided photons. It is discovered that the loss of photons in the TM11 channel into the others can be overcome by replacing it with a certain coherent superposition of TMmn channels, which is named as the controllable channel (CC) as the photons in CC can be perfectly reflected or transmitted by the TLS, and never lost into the other channels. The dark state emerges when the photon is incident from one of the scattering-free channels (SFCs) orthogonal to CC. The underlying physics mechanism is the multi-channel interference associated with Fano resonance.

Recoil effects of a motional scatterer on single-photon scattering in one dimension

The scattering of a single photon with sufficiently high energy can cause a recoil of a motional scatterer. We study its backaction on the photon's coherent transport in one dimension by modeling the motional scatterer as a two-level system, which is trapped in a harmonic potential. While the reflection spectrum is of a single peak in the Lamb-Dicke limit, multi-peaks due to phonon excitations can be observed in the reflection spectrum as the trap becomes looser or the mass of the two-level system becomes smaller.

The improved Gaussian approximation Calculation of Bogoliubov Mode in One Dimensional Bosonic Gas

In this paper, we study the homogeneous one-dimensional bosonic gas interacting via a repulsive contact potential by using the improved Gaussian approximation. We obtain the gapless excitation spectrum of Bogoliubov mode. Our result is in good agreement with the exact numerical calculation based on the Bethe ansatz. We speculate that the improved Gaussian approximation could be a quantitatively good approximation for higher dimensional systems.

Quantum Fluctuations of Vortex-Lattice State in Ultrafast Rotating Bose Gas

Quantum fluctuations in an ultrafast rotating Bose gas at zero temperature are investigated. We calculate the condensate density perturbatively to show that no condensate is present in the thermodynamic limit. The excitation from Gaussian fluctuations around the mean field solution causes infrared divergences in loop diagrams, nevertheless, in calculating the atom number density, the correlation functions and the free energy, we find the sum of the divergences in the same loop order vanishes and obtain finite physical quantities. The long-range correlation is explored and the algebraic decay exponent for the single-particle correlation function is obtained. The atom number density distribution is obtained at the one-loop level, which illustrates the quantum fluctuation effects to melt the mean field vortex-lattice. By the non-perturbative Gaussian variational method, we locate the spinodal point of the vortex-lattice state.
