Robust Electrocaloric Performance Enabled by Highly-Polar Frustrated Nanodomains in NaNbO3-Based Ferrodistortive Relaxor

Solid-state refrigeration technologies, represented by electrocaloric effect (ECE), are renowned for zero global-warming-potential and high cooling efficiency. Synergistically achieving high electrocaloric effect ({\Delta}T) and wide temperature span ({\Delta}Tspan) for EC materials takes a leapfrog toward practical cooling applications, typical for integrated circuits. Guided by phase-field simulation, Ba(Ti, Hf)O3 dubbed as a polar wrench, establishes polar frustration by setting up local stress field and manipulating octahedral oxygen tilt (OOT) in NaNbO3-based relaxor. The resultant P4bm framework entails short-range and highly-polar ferrodistortive nanodomains, i.e., the abundant highly-polar nanodomains facilitate to increase entropy change and robust OOT enables to impede thermal perturbations. Consequently, a large {\Delta}T of 0.85 K and 0.70 K with an ultrawide {\Delta}Tspan of 118 K and 130 K is obtained, contributing to an ultrahigh figure of merit of > 90 K2 in NaNbO3-Ba(Ti, Hf)O3, significantly outperforms its counterparts. The local structure responsible for robust EC performances are decrypted through 2D information from atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscope, 3D big-box model constructed from neutron total scattering and DFT calculations. These findings highlight that polar frustration strategy in ferrodistortive relaxor enables to pioneer emergent EC performances, and also unearth potential entropy-change-based ferroelectric and ferromagnetic materials beyond.

Unconventional polarization switching mechanism in (Hf, Zr)O2 ferroelectrics

HfO$_{2}$-based ferroelectric thin films are promising for their application in ferroelectric devices. Predicting the ultimate magnitude of polarization and understanding its switching mechanism are critical to realize the optimal performance of these devices. Here, a generalized solid-state variable cell nudged elastic band (VCNEB) method is employed to predict the switching pathway associated with domain-wall motion in (Hf, Zr)O$_{2}$ ferroelectrics. It is found that the polarization reversal pathway, where three-fold coordinated O atoms pass across the nominal unit-cell boundaries defined by the Hf/Zr atomic planes, is energetically more favorable than the conventional pathway where the O atoms do not pass through these planes. This finding implies that the polarization orientation in the orthorhombic Pca2$_{1}$ phase of HfO$_{2}$ nd its derivatives is opposite to that normally assumed, predicts the spontaneous polarization magnitude of about 70 $μ$C/cm$^{2}$ that is nearly 50% larger than the commonly accepted value, signifies a positive intrinsic longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient, and suggests growth of ferroelectric domains, in response to an applied electric field, structurally reversed to those usually anticipated. These results provide important insights into the understanding of ferroelectricity in HfO$_{2}$-based ferroelectrics.

Study on the Data Storage Technology of Mini-Airborne Radar Based on Machine Learning

The data rate of airborne radar is much higher than the wireless data transfer rate in many detection applications, so the onboard data storage systems are usually used to store the radar data. Data storage systems with good seismic performance usually use NAND Flash as storage medium, and there is a widespread problem of long file management time, which seriously affects the data storage speed, especially under the limitation of platform miniaturization. To solve this problem, a data storage method based on machine learning is proposed for mini-airborne radar. The storage training model is established based on machine learning, and could process various kinds of radar data. The file management methods are classified and determined using the model, and then are applied to the storage of radar data. To verify the performance of the proposed method, a test was carried out on the data storage system of a mini-airborne radar. The experimental results show that the method based on machine learning can form various data storage methods adapted to different data rates and application scenarios. The ratio of the file management time to the actual data writing time is extremely low.

Effects of Strain and Film Thickness on the Stability of the Rhombohedral Phase of HfO2

The discovery of ferroelectric polarization in HfO2-based ultrathin films has spawned a lot of interest due to their potential applications in data storage. Recently, a new R3m rhombohedral phase was proposed to be responsible for the emergence of ferroelectricity in the [111]-oriented Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 thin films, but the fundamental mechanism of ferroelectric polarization in such films remains poorly understood. In this paper, we employ density-functional-theory calculations to investigate structural and polarization properties of the R3m HfO2 phase. We find that the film thickness and in-plane compressive strain effects play a key role in stabilizing the R3m phase leading to robust ferroelectricity of [111]-oriented R3m HfO2.

Spin-dependent $γ$ softness or triaxiality in even-even $^{132-138}$Nd nuclei

The properties of $γ$ instability in rapidly rotating even-even $^{132-138}$Nd isotopes have been investigated using the pairing-deformation self-consistent total-Routhian-surface calculations in a deformation space of ($β_2, γ, β_4$). It is found that even-even $^{134-138}$Nd nuclei exhibit the triaxiality in both ground and excited states, even up to high-spin ones. The lightest isotope possesses a well-deformed prolate shape without $γ$ deformation component. The current numerical results are compared with previous calculations and available observables, showing basically a general agreement with the observed trend of $γ$ correlations. The existing differences between theory and experiment are analyzed and discussed briefly.
