QoS-aware Dynamic Fog Service Provisioning

Recent advances in the areas of Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, and Machine Learning have contributed to the rise of a growing number of complex applications. These applications will be data-intensive, delay-sensitive, and real-time as smart devices prevail more in our daily life. Ensuring Quality of Service (QoS) for delay-sensitive applications is a must, and fog computing is seen as one of the primary enablers for satisfying such tight QoS requirements, as it puts compute, storage, and networking resources closer to the user. In this paper, we first introduce FogPlan, a framework for QoS-aware Dynamic Fog Service Provisioning (QDFSP). QDFSP concerns the dynamic deployment of application services on fog nodes, or the release of application services that have previously been deployed on fog nodes, in order to meet low latency and QoS requirements of applications while minimizing cost. FogPlan framework is practical and operates with no assumptions and minimal information about IoT nodes. Next, we present a possible formulation (as an optimization problem) and two efficient greedy algorithms for addressing the QDFSP at one instance of time. Finally, the FogPlan framework is evaluated using a simulation based on real-world traffic traces.

Improving Distantly Supervised Relation Extraction with Neural Noise Converter and Conditional Optimal Selector

Distant supervised relation extraction has been successfully applied to large corpus with thousands of relations. However, the inevitable wrong labeling problem by distant supervision will hurt the performance of relation extraction. In this paper, we propose a method with neural noise converter to alleviate the impact of noisy data, and a conditional optimal selector to make proper prediction. Our noise converter learns the structured transition matrix on logit level and captures the property of distant supervised relation extraction dataset. The conditional optimal selector on the other hand helps to make proper prediction decision of an entity pair even if the group of sentences is overwhelmed by no-relation sentences. We conduct experiments on a widely used dataset and the results show significant improvement over competitive baseline methods.

Logarithmic Decay of a Wave Equation with Kelvin-Voigt Damping

In this paper we analyze the long time behavior of a wave equation with local Kelvin-Voigt Damping. Through introducing proper class symbol and pseudo-differential calculus, we obtain a Carleman estimate, and then establish an estimate on the corresponding resolvent operator. As a result, we show the logarithmic decay rate for energy of the system without any geometric assumption on the subdomain on which the damping is effective.

Aurora: Providing Trusted System Services for Enclaves On an Untrusted System

Intel SGX provisions shielded executions for security-sensitive computation, but lacks support for trusted system services (TSS), such as clock, network and filesystem. This makes \textit{enclaves} vulnerable to Iago attacks~\cite{DBLP:conf/asplos/CheckowayS13} in the face of a powerful malicious system. To mitigate this problem, we present Aurora, a novel architecture that provides TSSes via a secure channel between enclaves and devices on top of an untrusted system, and implement two types of TSSes, i.e. clock and end-to-end network. We evaluate our solution by porting SQLite and OpenSSL into Aurora, experimental results show that SQLite benefits from a \textit{microsecond} accuracy trusted clock and OpenSSL gains end-to-end secure network with about 1ms overhead.

Generating Handwritten Chinese Characters using CycleGAN

Handwriting of Chinese has long been an important skill in East Asia. However, automatic generation of handwritten Chinese characters poses a great challenge due to the large number of characters. Various machine learning techniques have been used to recognize Chinese characters, but few works have studied the handwritten Chinese character generation problem, especially with unpaired training data. In this work, we formulate the Chinese handwritten character generation as a problem that learns a mapping from an existing printed font to a personalized handwritten style. We further propose DenseNet CycleGAN to generate Chinese handwritten characters. Our method is applied not only to commonly used Chinese characters but also to calligraphy work with aesthetic values. Furthermore, we propose content accuracy and style discrepancy as the evaluation metrics to assess the quality of the handwritten characters generated. We then use our proposed metrics to evaluate the generated characters from CASIA dataset as well as our newly introduced Lanting calligraphy dataset.

Recommending Complementary Products in E-Commerce Push Notifications with a Mixture Model Approach

Push notification is a key component for E-commerce mobile applications, which has been extensively used for user growth and engagement. The effectiveness of the push notification is generally measured by message open rate. A push message can contain a recommended product, a shopping news and etc., but often only one or two items can be shown in the push message due to the limit of display space. This paper proposes a mixture model approach for predicting push message open rate for a post-purchase complementary product recommendation task. The mixture model is trained to learn latent prediction contexts, which are determined by user and item profiles, and then make open rate predictions accordingly. The item with the highest predicted open rate is then chosen to be included in the push notification message for each user. The parameters of the mixture model are optimized using an EM algorithm. A set of experiments are conducted to evaluate the proposed method live with a popular E-Commerce mobile app. The results show that the proposed method is superior than several existing solutions by a significant margin.

General scaling relations for locomotion in granular media

We derive a general dimensionless form for granular locomotion, which is validated in experiments and Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations. The form instructs how to scale size, mass, and driving parameters in order to relate dynamic behaviors of different locomotors in the same granular media. The scaling can be derived by assuming intrusion forces arise from Resistive Force Theory (RFT) or equivalently by assuming the granular material behaves as a continuum obeying a frictional yield criterion. The scalings are experimentally confirmed using pairs of wheels of various shapes and sizes under many driving conditions in a common sand bed. We discuss why the two models provide such a robust set of scaling laws even though they neglect a number of the complexities of granular rheology. Motivated by potential extra-planetary applications, the dimensionless form also implies a way to predict wheel performance in one ambient gravity based on tests in a different ambient gravity. We confirm this using DEM simulations, which show that scaling relations are satisfied over an array of driving modes even when gravity differs between scaled tests.

Polynomial Stabilization of Solutions to a Class of Damped Wave Equations

We consider a class of wave equations of the type $\partial_{tt} u + Lu + B\partial_{t} u = 0$, with a self-adjoint operator $L$, and various types of local damping represented by $B$. By establishing appropriate and raher precise estimates on the resolvent of an associated operator $A$ on the imaginary axis of ${\Bbb C}$, we prove polynomial decay of the semigroup $\exp(-tA)$ generated by that operator. We point out that the rate of decay depends strongly on the concentration of eigenvalues and that of the eigenfunctions of the operator $L$. We give several examples of application of our abstract result, showing in particular that for a rectangle $Ω:= (0,L_{1})\times (0,L_{2})$ the decay rate of the energy is different depending on whether the ratio $L_{1}^2/L_{2}^2$ is rational, or irrational but algebraic.

Moment Matching Based Conjugacy Approximation for Bayesian Ranking and Selection

We study the conjugacy approximation method in the context of Bayesian ranking and selection with unknown correlations. Under the assumption of normal-inverse-Wishart prior distribution, the posterior distribution remains a normal-inverse-Wishart distribution thanks to the conjugacy property when all alternatives are sampled at each step. However, this conjugacy property no longer holds if only one alternative is sampled at a time, an appropriate setting when there is a limited budget on the number of samples. We propose two new conjugacy approximation methods based on the idea of moment matching. Both of them yield closed-form Bayesian prior updating formulas. This updating formula can then be combined with the knowledge gradient algorithm under the "value of information" framework. We conduct computational experiments to show the superiority of the proposed conjugacy approximation methods, including applications in wind farm placement and computer model calibration.

A Microscopic Description of the Granular Fluidity Field in Nonlocal Flow Modeling

A recent granular rheology based on an implicit `granular fluidity' field has been shown to quantitatively predict many nonlocal phenomena. However, the physical nature of the field has not been identified. Here, the granular fluidity is found to be a kinematic variable given by the velocity fluctuation and packing fraction. This is verified with many discrete element simulations, which show the operational fluidity definition, solutions of the fluidity model, and the proposed microscopic formula all agree. Kinetic theoretical and Eyring-like explanations shed insight into the obtained form.
