Phase transitions and spectral singularities in a class of one-dimensional parity-time-symmetric complex potentials

We investigate a two-parametric family of one-dimensional non-Hermitian complex potentials with parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry. We find that there exist two distinct types of phase transitions, from an unbroken phase (characterized by a real spectrum) to a broken phase (where the spectrum becomes complex). The first type involves the emergence of a pair of complex eigenvalues bifurcating from the continuous spectrum. The second type is associated with the collision of such pairs at the bottom of the continuous spectrum. The first transition type is closely related to spectral singularities (SSs), at which point the transmission and reflection coefficients are divergent simultaneously. The second is associated with the emergence of bound states. In particular, under specific parameter conditions, we construct an exact bound state solution. By systematically exploring the parameter space, we establish a universal relationship governing the number of SSs in these potentials. These findings provide a fundamental theoretical framework for manipulating wave scattering in non-Hermitian systems, offering promising implications for designing advanced optical and quantum devices.

Bistability and Exact Reflectionless States in Nonlinear Scattering of a Bose--Einstein Condensate

We investigate the mean-field scattering dynamics of a quasi-one-dimensional Bose--Einstein condensate interacting with a Rosen--Morse potential. For specific potential and nonlinearity parameters, we derive analytically exact, degenerate scattering states (doubly or triply degenerate) exhibiting perfect transmission. Using the Bogoliubov--de Gennes approach, we analyze the stability of these reflectionless degenerate states, demonstrating that only one solution within each degenerate manifold is dynamically stable. Furthermore, we study a configuration with spatially localized nonlinearity, identifying an exact reflectionless state under specific conditions. Numerical analysis shows that this state marks the system's transition from monostability to bistability as the incident wave amplitude increases. Our work establishes an analytic framework for these multistable transmission phenomena, directly relevant to coherent matter-wave transport in ultracold atomic systems and optical propagation in engineered photonic lattices.

Photon Routing Induced by Giant Atoms in a Synthetic Frequency Dimension

We propose a hardware-efficient photon routing scheme based on a dynamically modulated multi-mode ring resonator and a driven cyclic three-level artificial atom, which effectively models a two-level giant atom coupled to a pair of one-dimensional lattices in a synthetic frequency dimension. The routing dynamics of single-photon wave packets in the frequency dimension are investigated numerically and analytically. Our results show that by tuning the phase of the driving field, the photon transmission between the two frequency lattices can be well controlled, thereby determining the propagation direction of photons within the ring resonator. This work presents a feasible scheme for implementing a controllable node in quantum networks, and the predictions of this scheme are well within reach of state-of-the-art experiments.

Chaos and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking transitions in a driven, nonlinear dimer with balanced gain and loss

Dynamics of a simple system, such as a two-state (dimer) model, are dramatically changed in the presence of interactions and external driving, and the resultant unitary dynamics show both regular and chaotic regions. We investigate the non-unitary dynamics of such a dimer in the presence of balanced gain and loss for the two states, i.e. a $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric dimer. We find that at low and high driving frequencies, the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric dimer motion continues to be regular, and the system is in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric state. On that other hand, for intermediate driving frequency, the system shows chaotic motion, and is usually in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry broken state. Our results elucidate the interplay between the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking transitions and regular-chaotic transitions in an experimentally accessible toy model.

The quantum Rabi model: solution and dynamics

This article presents a review of recent developments on various aspects of the quantum Rabi model. Particular emphasis is given on the exact analytic solution obtained in terms of confluent Heun functions. The analytic solutions for various generalisations of the quantum Rabi model are also discussed. Results are also reviewed on the level statistics and the dynamics of the quantum Rabi model. The article concludes with an introductory overview of several experimental realisations of the quantum Rabi model. An outlook towards future developments is also given.

Photon-induced sideband transitions in a many-body Landau-Zener process

We investigate the many-body Landau-Zener (LZ) process in a two-site Bose-Hubbard model driven by a time-periodic field. We find that the driving field may induce sideband transitions in addition to the main LZ transitions. These photon-induced sideband transitions are a signature of the photon-assisted tunneling in our many-body LZ process. In the strong interaction regime, we develop an analytical theory for understanding the sideband transitions, which is confirmed by our numerical simulation. Furthermore, we discuss the quantization of the driving field. In the effective model of the quantized driving field, the sideband transitions can be understood as the LZ transitions between states of different "photon" numbers.

Analytical energy spectrum for hybrid mechanical systems

We investigate the energy spectrum for hybrid mechanical systems described by non-parity-symmetric quantum Rabi models. A set of analytical solutions in terms of the confluent Heun functions and their analytical energy spectrum are obtained. The analytical energy spectrum includes regular and exceptional parts, which are both confirmed by direct numerical simulation. The regular part is determined by the zeros of the Wronskian for a pair of analytical solutions. The exceptional part is relevant to the isolated exact solutions and its energy eigenvalues are obtained by analyzing the truncation conditions for the confluent Heun functions. By analyzing the energy eigenvalues for exceptional points, we obtain the analytical conditions for the energy-level-crossings, which correspond to two-fold energy degeneracy.

Nonlinear dissipative dynamics of a two-component atomic condensate coupling with a continuum

We investigate the nonlinear dissipative coherence bifurcation and population dynamics of a two-component atomic Bose-Einstein condensate coupling with a continuum. The coupling between the two-component condensates and the continuum brings effective dissipations to the two-component condensates. The steady states and the coherence bifurcation depend on both dissipation and the nonlinear interaction between condensed atoms. The coherence among condensed atoms may be even enhanced by the effective dissipations. The combination of dissipation and nonlinearity allows one to control the switching between different self-trapped states or the switching between a self-trapped state and a non-self-trapped state.

Analytical eigenstates for the quantum Rabi model

We develop a method to find analytical solutions for the eigenstates of the quantum Rabi model. These include symmetric, anti-symmetric and asymmetric analytic solutions given in terms of the confluent Heun functions. Both regular and exceptional solutions are given in a unified form. In addition, the analytic conditions for determining the energy spectrum are obtained. Our results show that conditions proposed by Braak [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{107}, 100401 (2011)] are a type of sufficiency condition for determining the regular solutions. The well-known Judd isolated exact solutions appear naturally as truncations of the confluent Heun functions.

Pseudo Parity-Time Symmetry in Optical Systems

We introduce a novel concept of the {\em pseudo} parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry in periodically modulated optical systems with balanced gain and loss. We demonstrate that whether the original system is $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric or not, we can manipulate the property of the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry by applying a periodic modulation in such a way that the effective system derived by the high-frequency Floquet method is $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric. If the original system is non-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric, the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry in the effective system will lead to quasi-stationary propagation that can be associated with the \emph{pseudo $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry}. Our results provide a promising approach for manipulating the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry of realistic systems.

Second order tunneling of two interacting bosons in a driven triple well

We investigate quantum tunneling of two repulsive bosons in a triple-well potential subject to a high-frequency driving field. By means of the multiple-time-scale asymptotic analysis, we evidence a far-resonant strongly-interacting regime in which the selected coherent destruction of tunneling can occur between the paired states and unpaired states, and the dominant tunneling of the paired states is a second order process. Two Floquet quasienergy bands of the both kinds of states are given analytically, where a fine structure up to the second order corrections is displayed. The analytical results are confirmed numerically based on the exact model, and may be particularly relevant to controlling correlated tunneling in experiments.

Finite superposition solutions for surface states in a type of photonic superlattices

We develop an efficient method to derive a class of surface states in photonic superlattices. In a kind of infinite bichromatic superlattices satisfying some specific conditions, we obtain a finite portion of their in-gap states, which are superpositions of finite numbers of their unstable Bloch waves. By using these unstable in-gap states, we construct exactly several stable surface states near various interfaces in photonic superlattices. We analytically explore the parametric dependence of these exact surface states. Our analysis provides an exact demonstration for the existence of surface states and would be also helpful to understand surface states in other lattice systems.

Exact coherent matter-wave soliton induced and controlled by laser field

We find a set of exact solutions of coherent bright solitons in the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a harmonic potential, by using a Gaussian laser well (barrier) with oscillating position to balance the repulsive (attractive) interatomic interaction. The bright solitons do not deform in propagation and are controlled accurately by the laser driving which resonates with the trapping potential. The solitonic motion is more stable for the repulsive BEC than that of the attractive BEC. The results reveal a different kind of soliton trains compared to that reported recently in Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 164102 (2008) and suggest an experimental scheme for generating and controlling the coherent matter-wave solitons.

All-optical switch with two periodically curved nonlinear waveguides

We propose a type of all-optical switch which consists of two periodically curved nonlinear optical waveguides placed in parallel. Compared to the all-optical switch based on the traditional nonlinear directional coupler with straight waveguides, this all-optical switch has much lower switching threshold power and sharper switching width.

Quasi-energies and Floquet states of two weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates under periodic driving

We investigate the quasi-energies and Floquet states of two weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates driven by a periodic force. The quasi-energies and Floquet states of this system are computed within two different theoretical frameworks: the mean-field model and the second-quantized model. The mean-field approach reveals a triangular structure in the quasi-energy band. Our analysis of the corresponding Floquet states shows that this triangle signals the onset of a localization phenomenon, which can be regarded as a generalization of the well-known phenomenon called coherent destruction of tunneling. With the second quantized model, we find also a triangular structure in the quantum quasi-energy band, which is enveloped by the mean-field triangle. The close relation between these two sets of quasi-energies is further explored by a semi-classical method. With a Sommerfeld rule generalized to time-dependent systems, the quantum quasi-energies are computed by quantizing semiclassically the mean-field model and they are found to agree very well with the results obtained directly with the second-quantized model.

Nonlinear coherent destruction of tunneling

We study theoretically two coupled periodically-curved optical waveguides with Kerr nonlinearity. We find that the tunneling between the waveguides can be suppressed in a wide range of parameters due to nonlinearity. Such suppression of tunneling is different from the coherent destruction of tunneling in a linear medium, which occurs only at the isolated degeneracy point of the quasienergies. We call this novel suppression nonlinear coherent destruction of tunneling.

Physical solution of 1D quantum N-boson system with zero-range pair interaction

The mathematically exact solution of a one-dimensional (1D) quantum N-identical-boson system with zero-range pair interaction has been well known. We find that this solution is non-physical, since there exists a paradox of its energy expectation value, leading a basic contradiction to the mean-field theory of the system. A new integral equation that is equivalent to the corresponding Schrodinger one is established and its formally physical solution is derived. Energy correction from the average potential and harmonic waves of different momentums are demonstrated, and scattering amplitude of the physical solution and mean-field theory of the system are discussed.
