The Restricted Three-Body Problem as a Perturbed Duffing Equation

This paper investigates the restricted circular planar three-body problem. We prove that for every negative Jacobi constant of sufficiently large magnitude, the surface of unperturbed parabolic solutions breaks to induce homoclinic tangle for all but at most finitely many mass ratios of primaries. This result is not covered by \cite{G} as the required large magnitude of the Jacobi constant is uniform across the mass ratios. Our approach consists of three main ingredients. First, by introducing new coordinate transformations, we reformulate the restricted three-body problem as a perturbed Duffing equation. Second, we adopt the method recently introduced in \cite{CW} to derive integral equations for the primary stable and unstable solutions. This enables us to effectively capture the order of the singularities involved and to further establish the existence and analytic dependence of the invariant manifolds on the mass ratio of the primaries and the Jacobi constant. Third, in evaluating the Poincaré-Melnikov integral, we take advantage of the explicit homoclinic solution of the unperturbed Duffing equation. Compared to existing works, our proof is significantly simpler and more direct. Moreover, the paper is self-contained: we do not rely on McGehee's analysis in \cite{Mc} to justify the applicability of the Poincaré-Melnikov method.

Nonuniformly expanding 1d maps with logarithmic singularities

For a certain parametrized family of maps on the circle with critical points and logarithmic singularities where derivatives blow up to infinity, we construct a positive measure set of parameters corresponding to maps which exhibit nonuniformly expanding behavior. This implies the existence of "chaotic" dynamics in dissipative homoclinic tangles in periodically perturbed differential equations.

On the dynamics of certain homoclinic tangles

In this paper we study homoclinic tangles formed by transversal intersections of the stable and the unstable manifold of a {\it non-resonant, dissipative} homoclinic saddle point in periodically perturbed second order equations. We prove that the dynamics of these homoclinic tangles are that of {\it infinitely wrapped horseshoe maps}. Using $μ$ as a parameter representing the magnitude of the perturbations, we prove that (a) there exist infinitely many disjoint open intervals of $μ$, accumulating at $μ= 0$, such that the entire homoclinic tangle of the perturbed equation consists of one single horseshoe of infinitely many symbols, (b) there are parameters in between each of these parameter intervals, such that the homoclinic tangle contains attracting periodic solutions, and (c) there are also parameters in between where the homoclinic tangles admit non-degenerate transversal homoclinic tangency of certain dissipative hyperbolic periodic solutions. In particular, (c) implies the existence of strange attractors with SRB measures for a positive measure set of parameters.

Dissipative homoclinic loops and rank one chaos

We prove that when subjected to periodic forcing of the form $p_{μ, \rh, \om} (t) = μ(\rh h(x,y) + \sin (\om t))$, certain second order systems of differential equations with dissipative homoclinic loops admit strange attractors with SRB measures for a set of forcing parameters $(μ, \rh, \om)$ of positive measure. Our proof applies the recent theory of rank one maps, developed by Wang and Young based on the analysis of strongly dissipative Hénon maps by Benedicks and Carleson.

On the dynamics of a time-periodic equation

In this paper we use the second order equation $\frac{d^2 q}{dt^2} + (λ- γq^2) \frac{d q}{dt} - q + q^3 = μq^2 \sin ωt$ as a demonstrative example to illustrate how to apply the analysis of \cite{WO} and \cite{WOk} to the studies of concrete equations. We prove, among many other things, that there are positive measure sets of parameters $(λ, γ, μ, ω)$ corresponding to the case of intersected and the case of separated stable and unstable manifold of the solution $q(t) = 0$, $t \in \mathbb R$ respectively, so that the corresponding equations admit strange attractors with SRB measures.

Analysis of a Class of Strange Attractors

This work contains the results from a comprehensive study of a new class of attractors. The attractors in this class are characterized by strong local instability, but they are not uniformly hyperbolic. Rigorous results on their dynamical, geometric and statistical properties are presented.
