Deterministic End-to-End Transmission to Optimize the Network Efficiency and Quality of Service: A Paradigm Shift in 6G

Toward end-to-end mobile service provision with optimized network efficiency and quality of service, tremendous efforts have been devoted in upgrading mobile applications, transport and internet networks, and wireless communication networks for many years. However, the inherent loose coordination between different layers in the end-to-end communication networks leads to unreliable data transmission with uncontrollable packet delay and packet error rate, and a terrible waste of network resources incurred for data re-transmission. In an attempt to shed some lights on how to tackle these challenges, design methodologies and some solutions for deterministic end-to-end transmission for 6G and beyond are presented, which will bring a paradigm shift to the end-to-end wireless communication networks.

Gate-tuned ambipolar superconductivity with strong pairing interaction in intrinsic gapped monolayer 1T'-MoTe2

Gate tunable two-dimensional (2D) superconductors offer significant advantages when studying superconducting phase transitions. Here, we address superconductivity in exfoliated 1T'-MoTe2 monolayers with an intrinsic band gap of ~7.3 meV using electrostatic doping. Despite large differences in the dispersion of the conduction and the valence bands, superconductivity can be achieved easily for both electrons and holes. The onset of superconductivity occurs near 7-8K for both charge carrier types. This temperature is much higher than in bulk samples. Also the in-plane upper critical field is strongly enhanced and exceeds the BCS Pauli limit in both cases. Gap information is extracted using point-contact spectroscopy. The gap ratio exceeds multiple times the value expected for BCS weak-coupling. All these observations suggest a strong enhancement of the pairing interaction.

From ORAN to Cell-Free RAN: Architecture, Performance Analysis, Testbeds and Trials

Open radio access network (ORAN) provides an open architecture to implement radio access network (RAN) of the fifth generation (5G) and beyond mobile communications. As a key technology for the evolution to the sixth generation (6G) systems, cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) can effectively improve the spectrum efficiency, peak rate and reliability of wireless communication systems. Starting from scalable implementation of CF-mMIMO, we study a cell-free RAN (CF-RAN) under the ORAN architecture. Through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, we investigate the uplink and downlink spectral efficiencies of CF-mMIMO with the new architecture. We then discuss the implementation issues of CF-RAN under ORAN architecture, including time-frequency synchronization and over-the-air reciprocity calibration, low layer splitting, deployment of ORAN radio units (O-RU), artificial intelligent based user associations. Finally, we present some representative experimental results for the uplink distributed reception and downlink coherent joint transmission of CF-RAN with commercial off-the-shelf O-RUs.

Experimental Performance Evaluation of Cell-free Massive MIMO Systems Using COTS RRU with OTA Reciprocity Calibration and Phase Synchronization

Downlink coherent multiuser transmission is an essential technique for cell-free massive multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) systems, and the availability of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter is a basic requirement. To avoid CSI feedback in a time-division duplex system, the uplink channel parameters should be calibrated to obtain the downlink CSI due to the radio frequency circuit mismatch of the transceiver. In this paper, a design of a reference signal for over-the-air reciprocity calibration is proposed. The frequency domain generated reference signals can make full use of the flexible frame structure of the fifth generation (5G) new radio, which can be completely transparent to commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) remote radio units (RRUs) and commercial user equipments. To further obtain the calibration of multiple RRUs, an interleaved RRU grouping with a genetic algorithm is proposed, and an averaged Argos calibration algorithm is also presented. We develop a cell-free massive MIMO prototype system with COTS RRUs, demonstrate the statistical characteristics of the calibration error and the effectiveness of the calibration algorithm, and evaluate the impact of the calibration delay on the different cooperative transmission schemes.

Point Defects and Localized Excitons in 2D WSe2

Identifying the point defects in 2D materials is important for many applications. Recent studies have proposed that W vacancies are the predominant point defect in 2D WSe2, in contrast to theoretical studies, which predict that chalcogen vacancies are the most likely intrinsic point defects in transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors. We show using first principles calculations, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy experiments, that W vacancies are not present in our CVD-grown 2D WSe2. We predict that O-passivated Se vacancies (O_Se) and O interstitials (Oins) are present in 2D WSe2, because of facile O2 dissociation at Se vacancies, or due to the presence of WO3 precursors in CVD growth. These defects give STM images in good agreement with experiment. The optical properties of point defects in 2D WSe2 are important because single photon emission (SPE) from 2D WSe2 has been observed experimentally. While strain gradients funnel the exciton in real space, point defects are necessary for the localization of the exciton at length scales that enable photons to be emitted one at a time. Using state-of-the-art GW-Bethe-Salpeter-equation calculations, we predict that only Oins defects give localized excitons within the energy range of SPE in previous experiments, making them a likely source of previously observed SPE. No other point defects (O_Se, Se vacancies, W vacancies and Se_W antisites) give localized excitons in the same energy range. Our predictions suggest ways to realize SPE in related 2D materials and point experimentalists toward other energy ranges for SPE in 2D WSe2.

Liquid-solid surface phase transformation of fluorinated fullerene on monolayer tungsten diselenide

Hybrid van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures constructed by the integration of organic molecules and two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials have useful tunable properties for flexible electronic devices. Due to the chemically inert and atomically smooth nature of the TMD surface, well-defined crystalline organic films form atomically sharp interfaces facilitating optimal device performance. Here, the surface phase transformation of the supramolecular packing structure of fluorinated fullerene (C60F48) on single-layer (SL) tungsten diselenide (WSe2) is revealed by low-temperature (LT) scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), from thermally stable liquid to solid phases as the coverage increases. Statistical analysis of the intermolecular interaction potential reveals that the repulsive dipole-dipole interaction induced by interfacial charge transfer and substrate-mediated interactions play important roles in stabilizing the liquid C60F48 phases. Theoretical calculations further suggest that the dipole moment per C60F48 molecule varies with the surface molecule density, and the liquid-solid transformation could be understood from the perspective of the thermodynamic free energy for open systems. This study offers new insights into the growth behaviour at 2D organic/TMD hybrid heterointerfaces.

Oxygen passivation mediated tunability of trion and excitons in MoS$_2$

Using wide spectral range in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry with systematic ultra high vacuum annealing and in situ exposure to oxygen, we report the complex dielectric function of MoS$_2$ isolating the environmental effects and revealing the crucial role of unpassivated and passivated sulphur vacancies. The spectral weights of the A ($1.92$ eV) and B ($2.02$ eV) exciton peaks in the dielectric function reduce significantly upon annealing, accompanied by spectral weight transfer in a broad energy range. Interestingly, the original spectral weights are recovered upon controlled oxygen exposure. This tunability of the excitonic effects is likely due to passivation and reemergence of the gap states in the bandstructure during oxygen adsorption and desorption, respectively, as indicated by ab initio density functional theory calculation results. This work unravels and emphasizes the important role of adsorbed oxygen in the optical spectra and many-body interactions of MoS$_2$.
