New error estimates of the weighted $L^2$ projections

It is known that the weighted $L^2$ projection operator exhibits approximation properties different from those of the classical $L^2$ projection, in the sense that the $L^2$ error of the weighted $L^2$ projection of an $H^1$ function generally cannot be bounded by the $H^1$ semi-norm of the function. In this paper, we establish sharper $L^2$ error estimates for the weighted $L^2$ projection of an $H^1$ function under general weight distributions. These new estimates show that the $L^2$ errors of the weighted $L^2$ projection can be controlled by the $H^1$ semi-norm of the function, except when the weight distribution is highly irregular, such as those resembling a ``checkerboard" pattern. These results can be applied to more refined analyses of domain decomposition methods and multigrid methods for certain partial differential equations with large jump coefficients.

An unconditionally convergent discontinuous Galerkin neural network method activated by plane waves for Helmholtz equation and Maxwell's equations

In this paper we propose a discontinuous Galerkin plane wave neural network (DGPWNN) method for approximately solving Helmholtz equation and Maxwell's equations. In this method, we define an elliptic-type variational problem as in the plane wave least square method with $h-$refinement and introduce the adaptive construction of recursively augmented discontinuous Galerkin subspaces whose basis functions are realizations of element-wise neural network functions with hp-refinement, where the activation function is chosen as a complex-valued exponential function like the plane wave function. A sequence of basis functions approaching the unit residuals are recursively generated by iteratively solving quasi-maximization problems associated with the underlying residual functionals and the intersection of the closed unit ball and discontinuous plane wave neural network spaces. The convergence results of the DGPWNN method are unconditional only if nonlinear initial parameters for the quasi-maximizers are selected by suitably distributed propagation directions, and established without the assumption on the boundedness of the neural network parameters. Numerical experiments confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A hybrid two-level weighted Schwartz method for time-harmonic Maxwell equations

This paper concerns the preconditioning technique for discrete systems arising from time-harmonic Maxwell equations with absorptions, where the discrete systems are generated by N\'ed\'elec finite element methods of fixed order on meshes with suitable size. This kind of preconditioner is defined as a two-level hybrid form, which falls into the class of ``unsymmetrically weighted'' Schwarz method based on the overlapping domain decomposition with impedance boundary subproblems. The coarse space in this preconditioner is constructed by specific eigenfunctions solving a series of generalized eigenvalue problems in the local discrete Maxwell-harmonic spaces according to a user-defined tolerance $\rho$. We establish a stability result for the considered discrete variational problem. Using this discrete stability, we prove that the two-level hybrid Schwarz preconditioner is robust in the sense that the convergence rate of GMRES is independent of the mesh size, the subdomain size and the wave-number when $\rho$ is chosen appropriately. We also define an economical variant that avoids solving generalized eigenvalue problems. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical results and illustrate the efficiency of the preconditioners.

A discontinuous plane wave neural network method for Helmholtz equation and time-harmonic Maxwell's equations

In this paper we propose a {\it discontinuous} plane wave neural network (DPWNN) method with $hp-$refinement for approximately solving Helmholtz equation and time-harmonic Maxwell equations. In this method, we define a quadratic functional as in the plane wave least square (PWLS) method with $h-$refinement and introduce new discretization sets spanned by element-wise neural network functions with a single hidden layer, where the activation function on each element is chosen as a complex-valued exponential function like the plane wave function. The desired approximate solution is recursively generated by iteratively solving the minimization problem associated with the functional and the sets described above, which is defined by a sequence of approximate minimizers of the underlying residual functionals, where plane wave direction angles and activation coefficients are alternatively computed by iterative algorithms. For the proposed DPWNN method, the plane wave directions are adaptively determined in the iterative process, which is different from that in the standard PWLS method (where the plane wave directions are preliminarily given). Numerical experiments will confirm that this DPWNN method can generate approximate solutions with higher accuracy than the PWLS method.

A novel coarse space applying to the weighted Schwarz method for Helmholtz equations

In this paper we are concerned with restricted additive Schwarz with local impedance transformation conditions for a family of Helmholtz problems in two dimensions. These problems are discretized by the finite element method with conforming nodal finite elements. We design and analyze a new adaptive coarse space for this kind of restricted additive Schwarz method. This coarse space is spanned by some eigenvalue functions of local generalized eigenvalue problems, which are defined by weighted positive semi-definite bilinear forms on subspaces consisting of local discrete Helmholtz-harmonic functions from impedance boundary data. We proved that a two-level hybrid Schwarz preconditioner with the proposed coarse space possesses uniformly convergence independent of the mesh size, the subdomain size and the wave numbers under suitable assumptions. We also introduce an economic coarse space to avoid solving generalized eigenvalue problems. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical results.

R-Block: Regularized Block of Dropout for convolutional networks

Dropout as a regularization technique is widely used in fully connected layers while is less effective in convolutional layers. Therefore more structured forms of dropout have been proposed to regularize convolutional networks. The disadvantage of these methods is that the randomness introduced causes inconsistency between training and inference. In this paper, we apply a mutual learning training strategy for convolutional layer regularization, namely R-Block, which forces two outputs of the generated difference maximizing sub models to be consistent with each other. Concretely, R-Block minimizes the losses between the output distributions of two sub models with different drop regions for each sample in the training dataset. We design two approaches to construct such sub models. Our experiments demonstrate that R-Block achieves better performance than other existing structured dropout variants. We also demonstrate that our approaches to construct sub models outperforms others.

Convergence of HX Preconditioner for Maxwell's Equations with Jump Coefficients (ii): The Main Results

This paper is the second one of two serial articles, whose goal is to prove convergence of HX Preconditioner (proposed by Hiptmair and Xu, 2007) for Maxwell's equations with jump coefficients. In this paper, based on the auxiliary results developed in the first paper (Hu, 2017), we establish a new regular Helmholtz decomposition for edge finite element functions in three dimensions, which is nearly stable with respect to a weight function. By using this Helmholtz decomposition, we give an analysis of the convergence of the HX preconditioner for the case with strongly discontinuous coefficients. We show that the HX preconditioner possesses fast convergence, which not only is nearly optimal with respect to the finite element mesh size but also is independent of the jumps in the coefficients across the interface between two neighboring subdomains.

A geometric optics ansatz-based plane wave method for two dimensional Helmholtz equations with variable wave numbers

In this paper we develop a plane wave type method for discretization of homogeneous Helmholtz equations with variable wave numbers. In the proposed method, local basis functions (on each element) are constructed by the geometric optics ansatz such that they approximately satisfy a homogeneous Helmholtz equation without boundary condition. More precisely, each basis function is expressed as the product of an exponential plane wave function and a polynomial function, where the phase function in the exponential function approximately satisfies the eikonal equation and the polynomial factor is recursively determined by transport equations associated with the considered Helmholtz equation. We prove that the resulting plane wave spaces have high order $h$-approximations as the standard plane wave spaces (which are available only to the case with constant wave number). We apply the proposed plane wave spaces to the discretization of nonhomogeneous Helmholtz equations with variable wave numbers and establish the corresponding error estimates of their finite element solutions. We report some numerical results to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

A plane wave method based on approximate wave directions for two dimensional Helmholtz equations with large wave numbers

In this paper we present and analyse a high accuracy method for computing wave directions defined in the geometrical optics ansatz of Helmholtz equation with variable wave number. Then we define an "adaptive" plane wave space with small dimensions, in which each plane wave basis function is determined by such an approximate wave direction. We establish a best $L^2$ approximation of the plane wave space for the analytic solutions of homogeneous Helmholtz equations with large wave numbers and report some numerical results to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

Plane Wave Discontinuous Galerkin methods for the Helmholtz equation and Maxwell equations in Anisotropic Media

In this paper we are concerned with plane wave discontinuous Galerkin (PWDG) methods for Helmholtz equation and time-harmonic Maxwell equations in three-dimensional anisotropic media, for which the coefficients of the equations are matrices instead of numbers. We first define novel plane wave basis functions based on rigorous choices of scaling transformations and coordinate transformations. Then we derive the error estimates of the resulting approximate solutions with respect to the condition number of the coefficient matrices, under a new assumption on the shape regularity of polyhedral meshes. Numerical results verify the validity of the theoretical results, and indicate that the approximate solutions generated by the proposed PWDG method possess high accuracy.

Convergence of HX Preconditioner for Maxwell's Equations with Jump Coefficients (i): Various Extensions of The Regular Helmholtz Decomposition

This paper is the first one of two serial articles, whose goal is to prove convergence of HX Preconditioner (proposed by Hiptmair and Xu 2007) for Maxwell's equations with jump coefficients. In this paper we establish various extensions of the regular Helmholtz decomposition for edge finite element functions defined in three dimensional domains. The functions defined by the regular Helmholtz decompositions can preserve the zero tangential complement on faces and edges of polyhedral domains and some non-Lipchitz domains, and possess stability estimates with only a $logarithm$ factor. These regular Helmholtz decompositions will be used to prove convergence of the HX preconditioner for Maxwell's equations with jump coefficients in another paper (Hu 2017).

A novel least squares method for Helmholtz equations with large wave numbers

In this paper we are concerned with numerical methods for nonhomogeneous Helmholtz equations in inhomogeneous media. We design a least squares method for discretization of the considered Helmholtz equations. In this method, an auxiliary unknown is introduced on the common interface of any two neighboring elements and a quadratic subject functional is defined by the jumps of the traces of the solutions of local Helmholtz equations across all the common interfaces, where the local Helmholtz equations are defined on elements and are imposed Robin-type boundary conditions given by the auxiliary unknowns. A minimization problem with the subject functional is proposed to determine the auxiliary unknowns. The resulting discrete system of the auxiliary unknowns is Hermitian positive definite and so it can be solved by the PCG method. Under some assumptions we show that the generated approximate solutions possess almost the optimal error estimates with little "wave number pollution". Moreover, we construct a substructuring preconditioner for the discrete system of the auxiliary unknowns. Numerical experiments show that the proposed methods are very effective for the tested Helmholtz equations with large wave numbers.

A substructuring preconditioner with vertex-related interface solvers for elliptic-type equations in three dimensions

In this paper we propose a variant of the substructuring preconditioner for solving three-dimensional elliptic-type equations with strongly discontinuous coefficients. In the proposed preconditioner, we use the simplest coarse solver associated with the finite element space induced by the coarse partition, and construct vertex-related inexact interface solvers based on overlapping domain decomposition with small overlaps. This new preconditioner has an important merit: its construction and efficiency do not depend on the concrete form of the considered elliptic-type equations. % in the sense that they not only are cheap but also are easy to implement. We apply the proposed preconditioner to solve the linear elasticity problems and Maxwell's equations in three dimensions. Numerical results show that the convergence rate of PCG method with the preconditioner is nearly optimal, and also robust with respect to the (possibly large) jumps of the coefficients in the considered equations.

A variant of the plane wave least squares method for the time-harmonic Maxwell's equations

In this paper we are concerned with the plane wave method for the discretization of time-harmonic Maxwell's equations in three dimensions. As pointed out in [6], it is difficult to derive a satisfactory L2 error estimate of the standard plane wave approximation of the time-harmonic Maxwell's equations. We propose a variant of the plane wave least squares (PWLS) method and show that the new plane wave approximations possess the desired L2 error estimate. Moreover, the numerical results indicate that the new approximations have sightly smaller L2 errors than the standard plane wave approximations. More importantly, the results are derived for more general models in layered media.

Substructuring preconditioners with novel interface solvers for general elliptic-type equations in three dimensions

In this paper we propose two variants of the substructuring preconditioner for solving three-dimensional elliptic-type equations with strongly discontinuous coefficients. In the new preconditioners, we use the simplest coarse solver associated with the finite element space induced by the coarse partition, and construct novel interface solvers based on some new observations. The resulting preconditioners share the merits of the non-overlapping domain decomposition method (DDM) and the overlapping DDM in the sense that they not only are cheap but also are easy to implement. We apply the proposed preconditioners to solve the linear elasticity problems and Maxwell's equations in three dimensions. Numerical results show that the convergence rate of PCG method with the preconditioners are nearly optimal, and also robust with respect to the (possibly large) jumps of the coefficients in the considered equations.

Novel multilevel preconditioners for the systems arising from plane wave discretization of Helmholtz equations with large wave numbers

In this paper we are concerned with fast algorithms for the systems arising from the plane wave discretizations for two-dimensional Helmholtz equations with large wave numbers. We consider the plane wave weighted least squares (PWLS) method and the plane wave discontinuous Galerkin (PWDG) method. The main goal of this paper is to construct multilevel parallel preconditioners for solving the resulting Helmholtz systems. To this end, we first build a multilevel overlapping space decomposition for the plane wave discretization space based on a multilevel overlapping domain decomposition method. Then, corresponding to the space decomposition, we construct an additive multilevel preconditioner for the underlying Helmholtz systems. Further, we design both additive and multiplicative multilevel preconditioners with smoothers, which are different from the standard multigrid preconditioners. We apply the proposed multilevel preconditioners with a {\it constant} coarsest mesh size to solve two dimensional Helmholtz systems generated by PWLS method or PWDG method, and we find that the new preconditioners possess nearly stable convergence, i.e., the iteration counts of the preconditioned iterative methods (PCG or PGMRES) with the preconditioners increase very slowly when the wave number increases (and the fine mesh size decreases).

A Nonconforming Finite Element Method for Fourth Order Curl Equations in R^3

In this paper we present a nonconforming finite element method for solving fourth order curl equations in three dimensions arising from magnetohydrodynamics models. We show that the method has an optimal error estimate for a model problem involving both curl^2 and curl^4 operators. The element has a very small number of degrees of freedom and it imposes the inter-element continuity along the tangential direction which is appropriate for the approximation of magnetic fields. We also provide explicit formulae of basis functions for this element.
