Experimental review on the chiral magnetic effect in relativistic heavy ion collisions

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) refers to a predicted phenomena in quantum chromodynamics that manifests as a charge separation along an external magnetic field, driven by an imbalance of quark chirality. Searches for the CME has been carried out by azimuthal particle correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions where such a chirality imbalance is anticipated and a strong magnetic field is created in the initial stage. No conclusive experimental evidence on the CME has been established so far because of large background contributions to azimuthal correlation observables. We review the status of the experimental search for the CME, covering the observables used, the techniques to mitigate backgrounds, and the strengths and limitations of various experimental approaches, and outline a future prospect of the CME search in high-energy nuclear collisions.

Assessing background effects in search of the chiral vortical effect in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

The search for the Chiral Vortical Effect (CVE) in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is carried out by measuring azimuthal correlators for baryon pairs such as $\Lambda$ and protons. Experimental results from the ALICE collaboration show significant separations in these observables, however, the interpretation remains unclear. It is believed that background contributions from baryon production mechanisms may play an important role. Using three phenomenological models, the Blast Wave, AMPT, and AVFD+UrQMD, we systematically investigate the background effects in Pb--Pb collisions at \snn = 5.02 TeV. We demonstrate that local baryon conservation, as well as hadronic annihilation processes, can significantly influence the correlators. The feed-down contribution from secondary protons is also estimated. Our study provides a foundation for disentangling background mechanisms and further facilitates the search for the CVE.

The High Level Trigger and Express Data Production at STAR

To meet the demands of the Beam Energy Scan phase-II (BES-II) program, the STAR experiment at RHIC developed a dual real-time framework consisting of a High Level Trigger (HLT) and an Express Data Production system (xProduction). The HLT operates online within the Data Acquisition (DAQ) chain on a multicore CPU cluster, with optional acceleration using Xeon Phi coprocessors. It employs parallelized algorithms, such as the Cellular Automaton track finder, for fast tracking, vertexing, and event filtering, enabling real-time event selection and detector monitoring. In parallel, xProduction runs independently of the DAQ loop and performs near offline-quality calibration and reconstruction within hours. Using the express data stream, enhanced by HLT selections, and the STAR calibration framework, it enables early physics analysis and provides collaboration-wide access to analysis-ready datasets. Together, HLT and xProduction form a complementary system combining real-time selection with rapid high-quality reconstruction. This framework has enabled prompt reconstruction of the ${}^5_{\Lambda}\mathrm{He}$ hypernucleus and efficient processing of large datasets, demonstrating scalability for future high-luminosity experiments.

Production of exotic hadrons in $pp$ and nuclear collisions

Exotic hadrons beyond the conventional quark model have been discovered in the past two decades. Investigations of these states can lead to deep understanding of nonperturbative dynamics of the strong interaction. In this concise review, we focus on the productions of exotic hadrons in $pp$, $p\bar p$, and nuclear collisions. Experimental observations of light nuclei and hypernuclei, as prototypes of hadronic molecules, in heavy ion collisions will also be briefly discussed.

Charge asymmetry dependence of flow and a novel correlator to detect the chiral magnetic wave in a multiphase transport model

In a multiphase transport model with the initial electric quadrupole moment, we studied and discussed the charge asymmetry ($A_{\rm ch}$) dependence of flow at varied kinematic windows in semi-central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200 GeV. We then proposed a novel correlator $W$ which specially focuses on the difference of elliptic flow between positively and negatively charged hadrons induced by the chiral magnetic wave and, more importantly, is irrelevant to the ambiguous $A_{\rm ch}$. We found that the distribution of the second order correlator $W_2$ displays a convex structure in the absence of the quadrupole and a concave shape in the presence of the quadrupole. We also studied the response of $W_n$ for both signal and resonance background in a toy model and in analytical calculation. Such a method provides a new way to detect the chiral magnetic wave.
