Phonon Transport within Periodic Porous Structures -- From Classical Phonon Size Effects to Wave Effects

Tailoring thermal properties with nanostructured materials can be of vital importance for many applications. Generally classical phonon size effects are employed to reduce the thermal conductivity, where strong phonon scattering by nanostructured interfaces or boundaries can dramatically supress the heat conduction. When these boundaries or interfaces are arranged in a periodic pattern, coherent phonons may have interference and modify the phonon dispersion, leading to dramatically reduced thermal conductivity. Such coherent phonon transport has been widely studied for superlattice films and recently emphasized for periodic nanoporous patterns. Although the wave effects have been proposed for reducing the thermal conductivity, more recent experimental evidence shows that such effects can only be critical at an ultralow temperature, i.e., around 10 K or below. At room temperature, the impacted phonons are mostly restricted to hypersonic modes that contribute little to the thermal conductivity. In this review, the theoretical and experimental studies of periodic porous structures are summarized and compared. The general applications of periodic nanostructured materials are further discussed.

Determining Phonon Mean Free Path Spectrum by Ballistic Phonon Resistance within a Nanoslot-Patterned Thin Film

At micro- to nano-scales, classical size effects in heat conduction play an important role in suppressing the thermal transport process. Such effects occur when the characteristic lengths become commensurate to the mean free paths (MFPs) of heat carriers that are mainly phonons for nonmetallic crystals. Beyond existing experimental efforts on thin films using laser-induced thermal gratings, this work provides the complete theoretical analysis for a new approach to extract the effective phonon MFP distribution for the in-plane heat conduction within a thin film or flake-like sample. In this approach, nanoslots are patterned on a suspended thin film. Phonons will transport ballistically through the neck region between adjacent nanoslots if the phonon MFPs are much longer than the neck width. The associated "ballistic thermal resistance" for varied neck dimensions can then be used to reconstruct the phonon MFP distribution within the film. The technique can be further extended to two-dimensional materials when the relaxation time approximation is reasonably accurate.

Constant mean curvature foliation of globally hyperbolic (2+1)-spacetimes with particles

Let $M$ be a globally hyperbolic maximal compact $3$-dimensional spacetime locally modelled on Minkowski, anti-de Sitter or de Sitter space. It is well known that $M$ admits a unique foliation by constant mean curvature surfaces. In this paper we extend this result to singular spacetimes with particles (cone singularities of angles less than $π$ along time-like geodesics).

Hyperbolic ends with particles and grafting on singular surfaces

We prove that any hyperbolic end with particles (cone singularities along infinite curves of angles less than $π$) admits a unique foliation by constant Gauss curvature surfaces. Using a form of duality between hyperbolic ends with particles and convex globally hyperbolic maximal (GHM) de Sitter spacetime with particles, it follows that any convex GHM de Sitter spacetime with particles also admits a unique foliation by constant Gauss curvature surfaces. We prove that the grafting map from the product of Teichmüller space with the space of measured laminations to the space of complex projective structures is a homeomorphism for surfaces with cone singularities of angles less than $π$, as well as an analogue when grafting is replaced by "smooth grafting".

The arc metric on Teichmüller spaces of surfaces of infinite type with boundary

Let $X_{0}$ be a complete hyperbolic surface of infinite type with geodesic boundary which admits a countable pair of pants decomposition. As an application of the Basmajian identity for complete bordered hyperbolic surfaces of infinite type with limit sets of 1-dimensional measure zero, we define an asymmetric metric (which is called arc metric) on the quasiconformal Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}(X_{0})$ provided that $X_{0}$ satisfies a geometric condition. Furthermore, we construct several examples of hyperbolic surfaces of infinite type satisfying the geometric condition and discuss the relation between the Shiga's condition and the geometric condition.

Constant Gauss curvature foliations of AdS spacetimes with particles

We prove that for any convex globally hyperbolic maximal (GHM) anti-de Sitter (AdS) 3-dimensional space-time $N$ with particles (cone singularities of angles less than $π$ along time-like curves), the complement of the convex core in $N$ admits a unique foliation by constant Gauss curvature surfaces. This extends, and provides a new proof of, a result of \cite{BBZ2}. We also describe a parametrization of the space of convex GHM AdS metrics on a given manifold, with particles of given angles, by the product of two copies of the Teichmüller space of hyperbolic metrics with cone singularities of fixed angles. Finally, we use the results on $K$-surfaces to extend to hyperbolic surfaces with cone singularities of angles less than $π$ a number of results concerning landslides, which are smoother analogs of earthquakes sharing some of their key properties.
