STA-VPT: SpatioTemporally Aligned Visual Prompt Tuning

Typical methods for visual prompt tuning follow the sequential modeling paradigm originating from NLP, learning a sequence of unordered parameterized tokens as visual prompts, which are then prefixed to the flattened image representation for model adaptation. While such a sequential prompting paradigm has exhibited great promise, it presents two potential limitations. First, the learned visual prompts, presented in an unordered sequential form, are unable to capture the underlying spatial relations in the input image which are crucial for effective image encoding. Second, all prompt tokens serve the same role by performing uniform prompting for all image tokens without distinction, lacking fine-grained prompting capability\---i.e., individualized prompting for different visual tokens to capture region-specific semantic patterns. In this work, we introduce the \mymodel model (\emph{STA-VPT}), a novel visual prompting paradigm, which learns a two-dimensional prompt token map for image prompting or a three-dimensional token volume for video prompting, ensuring spatial (or spatiotemporal) alignment with the input image token map (or video token volume). This alignment enables the visual prompts to preserve the spatial (or spatiotemporal) structure, thereby learning the underlying relations within the visual input. Furthermore, each prompt token serves as a specialized prompting expert and is designated to exclusively prompt for the spatially (or spatiotemporally) corresponding visual tokens. Consequently, our \emph{STA-VPT} is capable of performing individualized prompting for different spatiotemporal regions, potentially improving the prompting performance through fine-grained allocation of prompting capacity, in line with mixture of experts (MoE) principles.

Video-ToC: Video Tree-of-Cue Reasoning

Existing Video Large Language Models (Video LLMs) struggle with complex video understanding, exhibiting limited reasoning capabilities and potential hallucinations. In particular, these methods tend to perform reasoning solely relying on the pretrained inherent reasoning rationales whilst lacking perception-aware adaptation to the input video content. To address this, we propose \textbf{Video-ToC}, a novel video reasoning framework that enhances video understanding through tree-of-cue reasoning. Specifically, our approach introduces three key innovations: (1) A tree-guided visual cue localization mechanism, which endows the model with enhanced fine-grained perceptual capabilities through structured reasoning patterns; (2) A reasoning-demand reward mechanism, which dynamically adjusts the reward value for reinforcement learning (RL) based on the estimation of reasoning demands, enabling on-demand incentives for more effective reasoning strategies; and (3) An automated annotation pipeline that constructs the Video-ToC-SFT-1k and Video-ToC-RL-2k datasets for supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and RL training, respectively. Extensive evaluations on six video understanding benchmarks and a video hallucination benchmark demonstrate the superiority of Video-ToC over baselines and recent methods. D$^2$ST-Adapter: Disentangled-and-Deformable Spatio-Temporal Adapter for Few-shot Action Recognition

Adapting pre-trained image models to video modality has proven to be an effective strategy for robust few-shot action recognition. In this work, we explore the potential of adapter tuning in image-to-video model adaptation and propose a novel video adapter tuning framework, called Disentangled-and-Deformable Spatio-Temporal Adapter (D$^2$ST-Adapter). It features a lightweight design, low adaptation overhead and powerful spatio-temporal feature adaptation capabilities. D$^2$ST-Adapter is structured with an internal dual-pathway architecture that enables built-in disentangled encoding of spatial and temporal features within the adapter, seamlessly integrating into the single-stream feature learning framework of pre-trained image models. In particular, we develop an efficient yet effective implementation of the D$^2$ST-Adapter, incorporating the specially devised anisotropic Deformable Spatio-Temporal Attention as its pivotal operation. This mechanism can be individually tailored for two pathways with anisotropic sampling densities along the spatial and temporal domains in 3D spatio-temporal space, enabling disentangled encoding of spatial and temporal features while maintaining a lightweight design. Extensive experiments by instantiating our method on both pre-trained ResNet and ViT demonstrate the superiority of our method over state-of-the-art methods. Our method is particularly well-suited to challenging scenarios where temporal dynamics are critical for action recognition. Code is available at https://github.com/qizhongtan/D2ST-Adapter.
