Coulomb effects on topological band inversion in the moiré of WSe$_2$/BAs heterobilayer

Quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator with large gap is highly desirable for potential spintronics application. Here we realize electrically tunable QSH insulator with large gap in van der Waals heterobilayer of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) and hexagonal BAs. When the type II band alignment gets inverted in an electric field, the hybridization by interlayer hopping between the spin-valley locked valence band edges in TMD and the BAs conduction band edges leads to a stacking-configuration dependent topological band inversion. In the non-interacting limit, the double spin degeneracy of BAs leaves an un-hybridized conduction band inside the gap, so the heterobilayer is a spin-valley locked metal instead of a QSH insulator. With the Coulomb interaction accounted in the double-layer geometry, the interaction with the hybridization induced electric dipole shifts this un-hybridized conduction band upwards in energy, giving rise to a sizable global QSH gap. Consequently, this heterobilayer provides a platform for engineering electrically tunable QSH insulator with sizable band gap. In the long period moiré pattern with the spatial variation of local stacking-configurations, the competition between Coulomb interaction and interlayer hopping leads to superstructures of QSH insulators and excitonic insulators.

Gate tuning from exciton superfluid to quantum anomalous Hall in van der Waals heterobilayer

Van der Waals heterostructures of 2D materials provide a powerful approach towards engineering various quantum phases of matters. Examples include topological matters such as quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator, and correlated matters such as exciton superfluid. It can be of great interest to realize these vastly different quantum matters on a common platform, however, their distinct origins tend to restrict them to material systems of incompatible characters. Here we show that heterobilayers of two-dimensional valley semiconductors can be tuned through interlayer bias between an exciton superfluid (ES), a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator, and a QSH insulator. The tunability between these distinct phases results from the competition of Coulomb interaction with the interlayer quantum tunnelling that has a chiral form in valley semiconductors. Our findings point to exciting opportunities for harnessing both protected topological edge channels and bulk superfluidity in an electrically configurable platform.

Topological mosaic in Moiré superlattices of van der Waals heterobilayers

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures formed by 2D atomic crystals provide a powerful approach towards designer condensed matter systems. Incommensurate heterobilayers with small twisting and/or lattice mismatch lead to the interesting concept of Moiré superlattice, where the atomic registry is locally indistinguishable from commensurate bilayers but has local-to-local variation over long range. Here we show that such Moiré superlattice can lead to periodic modulation of local topological order in vdW heterobilayers formed by two massive Dirac materials. By tuning the vdW heterojunction from normal to the inverted type-II regime via an interlayer bias, the commensurate heterobilayer can become a topological insulator (TI), depending on the interlayer hybridization controlled by the atomic registry between the vdW layers. This results in mosaic pattern of TI regions and normal insulator (NI) regions in Moiré superlattices, where topologically protected helical modes exist at the TI/NI phase boundaries. By using symmetry based k.p and tight-binding models, we predict that this topological phenomenon can be present in inverted transition metal dichalcogenides heterobilayers. Our work points to a new means of realizing programmable and electrically switchable topological superstructures from 2D arrays of TI nano-dots to 1D arrays of TI nano-stripes.

Stationary states and quantum quench dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well potential

We consider the properties of stationary states and the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in a double-well (DW) potential with pair tunneling by using a full quantum-mechanical treatment. Furthermore, we study the quantum quench dynamics of the DW system subjected to a sudden change of the Peierls phase. It is shown that strong pair tunneling evidently influences the energy spectrum structure of the stationary states. For relatively weak repulsive interatomic interactions, the dynamics of the DW system with a maximal initial population difference evolves from Josephson oscillations to quantum self-trapping as one increases the pair tunneling strength, while for large repulsion the strong pair tunneling inhibits the quantum self-trapping. In the case of attractive interatomic interactions, strong pair tunneling tends to destroy the Josephson oscillations and quantum self-trapping, and the system eventually enters a symmetric regime of zero population difference. Finally, the effect of the Peierls phase on the quantum quench dynamics of the system is analyzed and discussed. These new features are remarkably different from the usual dynamical behaviors of a BEC in a DW potential.

Superfluidity of Bose-Einstein condensates in ultracold atomic gases

Liquid helium 4 had been the only bosonic superfluid available in experiments for a long time. This situation was changed in 1995, when a new superfluid was born with the realization of the Bose-Einstein condensation in ultracold atomic gases. The liquid helium 4 is strongly interacting and has no spin; there is almost no way to change its parameters, such as interaction strength and density. The new superfluid, Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), offers various aspects of advantages over liquid helium. On the one hand, BEC is weakly interacting and has spin degrees of freedom. On the other hand, it is convenient to tune almost all the parameters of a BEC, for example, the kinetic energy by spin-orbit coupling, the density by the external potential, and the interaction by Feshbach resonance. Great efforts have been devoted to studying these new aspects of superfluidity, and the results have greatly enriched our understanding of superfluidity. Here we review these developments by focusing on the stability and critical velocity of various superfluids. The BEC systems considered include a uniform superfluid in free space, a superfluid with its density periodically modulated, a superfluid with artificially engineered spin-orbit coupling, and a superfluid of pure spin current. Due to the weak interaction, these BEC systems can be well described by the mean field Gross-Pitaevskii theory and their superfluidity, in particular critical velocities, can be examined with Landau's theory of superfluid. Experimental proposals to observe these new aspects of superfluidity are discussed.

Superfluidity of pure spin current in ultracold Bose gases

We study the superfluidity of a pure spin current that is a spin current without mass current. We examine two types of pure spin currents, planar and circular, in spin-1 Bose gas. For the planar current, it is usually unstable, but can be stabilized by the quadratic Zeeman effect. The circular current can be generated with spin-orbit coupling. When the spin-orbit coupling strength is weak, we find that the circular pure spin current is the ground state of the system and thus a super-flow. We discuss the experimental schemes to realize and detect a pure spin current.

Extended Bose-Hubbard model with pair tunneling: spontaneous symmetry breaking, effective ground state and fragmentation

The extended Bose-Hubbard model for a double-well potential with pair tunneling is studied through both exact diagonalization and mean field theory (MFT). When pair tunneling is strong enough, the ground state wavefunction predicted by the MFT is complex and doubly degenerate while the quantum ground state wavefunction is always real and unique. The time reversal symmetry is spontaneously broken when the system transfers from the quantum ground state into one of the mean field ground states upon a small perturbation. As the gap between the lowest two levels decreases exponentially with particle number, the required perturbation inducing the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) is infinitesimal for particle number of typical cold atom systems. The quantum ground state is further analyzed with the Penrose-Onsager criterion, and is found to be a fragmented condensate. The state also develops the pair correlation and has non-vanishing pair order parameter instead of the conventional single particle order parameter. When this model is generalized to optical lattice, a pair superfluid can be generated. The mean field ground state can be regarded as effective ground state in this simple model. The detailed computation for this model enables us to offer an in-depth discussion of the relation between SSB and effective ground state, giving a glimpse on how nonlinearity arises in the SSB of a quantum system.

Exotic superfluidity in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the superfluidity of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by computing its Bogoliubov excitations, which are found to consist of two branches: one is gapless and phonon-like at long wavelength; the other is typically gapped. These excitations imply a superfluidity that has two new features: ({\it i}) due to the absence of the Galilean invariance, one can no longer define the critical velocity of superfluidity independent of the reference frame; ({\it ii}) the superfluidity depends not only on whether the speed of the BEC exceeds a critical value, but also on {\it cross helicity} that is defined as the direction of the cross product of the spin and the kinetic momentum of the BEC.
