Performance Analysis of BEM-based Channel Estimation for OTFS with Hardware Impairments

This letter studies the low-complexity channel estimation for orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) in the presence of hardware impairments. Firstly, to tackle the computational complexity of channel estimation, the basis expansion model (BEM) is utilized. Then, the mean square error (MSE) of the estimated channel is theoretically derived, revealing the effects of hardware impairments on channel estimation. Based on the estimated channel, the minimum mean square error (MMSE) detector is adopted to analyze the impacts of imperfect hardware on the bit error rate (BER). Finally, the numerical results validate the correctness of our theoretical analysis of the MSE for channel estimation and lower bound of the BER, and also demonstrate that even minor hardware impairments can significantly degrade the performance of the OTFS system.

Phase Noise Resilient Codebook Design for Sparse Code Multiple Access

Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a promising technique for future machine type communication systems due to its superior spectral efficiency and capability for supporting massive connectivity. This paper proposes a novel class of sparse codebooks to improve the error rate performance of SCMA in the presence of phase noise (PN). Specifically, we first analyze the error rate performance of SCMA impaired by looking into the pair-wise error probability. Then, a novel codebook design metric, called minimum PN metric (MPNM), is proposed. In addition, to design PN resilient codebooks, we propose a novel pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM)-based low projection mother constellation (LP-MC), called LP-PAM. The codebooks for different users are obtained by rotating and scaling the MC, where the phase rotation angles and scaling factors for different users are optimized by maximizing the proposed MPNM. Numerical results show that the proposed PNCBs have larger MPNM values and achieve improved error rate performance than the-state-of-the-art codebooks.

Advanced Nonlinear SCMA Codebook Design Based on Lattice Constellations

The design of efficient sparse codebooks in sparse code multiple access (SCMA) system have attracted tremendous research attention in the past few years. This paper proposes a novel nonlinear SCMA (NL-SCMA) that can subsume the conventional SCMA system which is referred to as linear SCMA, as special cases for downlink channels. This innovative approach allows a direct mapping of users' messages to a superimposed codeword for transmission, eliminating the need of a codebook for each user. This mapping is referred to as nonlinear mapping (codebook) in this paper. Hence, the primary objective is to design the nonlinear mapping, rather than the linear codebook for each user. We leverage the Lattice constellation to design the superimposed constellation due to its advantages such as the minimum Euclidean distance (MED), constellation volume, design flexibility and shape gain. Then, by analyzing the error patterns of the Lattice-designed superimposed codewords with the aid of the pair-wise error probability, it is found that the MED of the proposed nonlinear codebook is lower bounded by the ``single error pattern''. To this end, an error pattern-inspired codebook design is proposed, which can achieve large MEDs of the nonlinear codebooks. Numerical results show that the proposed codebooks can achieve lower error rate performance over both Gaussian and Rayleigh fading channels than the-state-of-the-art linear codebooks.

On the Design of Variable Modulation and Adaptive Modulation for Uplink Sparse Code Multiple Access

Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a promising non-orthogonal multiple access scheme for enabling massive connectivity in next generation wireless networks. However, current SCMA codebooks are designed with the same size, leading to inflexibility of user grouping and supporting diverse data rates. To address this issue, we propose a variable modulation SCMA (VM-SCMA) that allows users to employ codebooks with different modulation orders. To guide the VM-SCMA design, a VM matrix (VMM) that assigns modulation orders based on the SCMA factor graph is first introduced. We formulate the VM-SCMA design using the proposed average inverse product distance and the asymptotic upper bound of sum-rate, and jointly optimize the VMM, VM codebooks, power and codebook allocations. The proposed VM-SCMA not only enables diverse date rates but also supports different modulation order combinations for each rate. Leveraging these distinct advantages, we further propose an adaptive VM-SCMA (AVM-SCMA) scheme which adaptively selects the rate and the corresponding VM codebooks to adapt to the users' channel conditions by maximizing the proposed effective throughput. Simulation results show that the overall designs are able to simultaneously achieve a high-level system flexibility, enhanced error rate results, and significantly improved throughput performance, when compared to conventional SCMA schemes.

STAR-RIS-Enabled Full-Duplex Integrated Sensing and Communication System

Traditional self-interference cancellation (SIC) methods are common in full-duplex (FD) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. However, exploring new SIC schemes is important due to the limitations of traditional approaches. With the challenging limitations of traditional SIC approaches, this paper proposes a novel simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS)-enabled FD ISAC system, where STAR-RIS enhances simultaneous communication and target sensing and reduces self-interference (SI) to a level comparable to traditional SIC approaches. The optimization of maximizing the sensing signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and the communication sum rate, both crucial for improving sensing accuracy and overall communication performance, presents significant challenges due to the non-convex nature of these problems. Therefore, we develop alternating optimization algorithms to iteratively tackle these problems. Specifically, we devise the semi-definite relaxation (SDR)-based algorithm for transmit beamformer design. For the reflecting and refracting coefficients design, we adopt the successive convex approximation (SCA) method and implement the SDR-based algorithm to tackle the quartic and quadratic constraints. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and show that the proposed deployment can achieve better performance than that of the benchmark using the traditional SIC approach without STAR-RIS deployment.

AFDM-SCMA: A Promising Waveform for Massive Connectivity over High Mobility Channels

This paper studies the affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM)-empowered sparse code multiple access (SCMA) system, referred to as AFDM-SCMA, for supporting massive connectivity in high-mobility environments. First, by placing the sparse codewords on the AFDM chirp subcarriers, the input-output (I/O) relation of AFDM-SCMA systems is presented. Next, we delve into the generalized receiver design, chirp rate selection, and error rate performance of the proposed AFDM-SCMA. The proposed AFDM-SCMA is shown to provide a general framework and subsume the existing OFDM-SCMA as a special case. Third, for efficient transceiver design, we further propose a class of sparse codebooks for simplifying the I/O relation, referred to as I/O relation-inspired codebook design in this paper. Building upon these codebooks, we propose a novel iterative detection and decoding scheme with linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimator for both downlink and uplink channels based on orthogonal approximate message passing principles. Our numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed AFDM-SCMA systems over OFDM-SCMA systems in terms of the error rate performance. We show that the proposed receiver can significantly enhance the error rate performance while reducing the detection complexity.

A Progressive Codebook Optimization Scheme for Sparse Code Multiple Access in Downlink Channels

Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a promising technique for enabling massive connectivity and high spectrum efficiency in future machine-type communication networks. However, its performance crucially depends on well-designed multi-dimensional codebooks. In this paper, we propose a novel progressive codebook optimization scheme that can achieve near-optimal performance over downlink fading channels. By examining the pair-wise error probability (PEP), we first derive the symbol error rate (SER) performance of the sparse codebook in downlink channels, which is considered as the design criterion for codebook optimization. Then, the benchmark constellation group at a single resource element is optimized with a sequential quadratic programming approach. Next, we propose a constellation group reconstruction process to assign the sub-constellations in each resource element (RE) progressively. For the current RE, the assignment of the sub-constellations is designed by minimizing the error performance of the product distance of the superimposed codewords in previous REs. The design process involves both permutation and labeling of the sub-constellations in the benchmark constellation group. Simulation results show that the proposed codebooks exhibit significant performance gains over state-of-the-art codebooks in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region over various downlink fading channels.

Design and Performance Analysis of Index Modulation Empowered AFDM System

In this letter, we incorporate index modulation (IM) into affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM), called AFDM-IM, to enhance the bit error rate (BER) and energy efficiency (EE) performance. In this scheme, the information bits are conveyed not only by $M$-ary constellation symbols, but also by the activation of the chirp subcarriers (SCs) indices, which are determined based on the incoming bit streams. Then, two power allocation strategies, namely power reallocation (PR) strategy and power saving (PS) strategy, are proposed to enhance BER and EE performance, respectively. Furthermore, the average bit error probability (ABEP) is theoretically analyzed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed AFDM-IM scheme achieves better BER performance than the conventional AFDM scheme.

BER Analysis of SCMA-OFDM Systems in the Presence of Carrier Frequency Offset

Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) building upon orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising wireless technology for supporting massive connectivity in future machine-type communication networks. However, the sensitivity of OFDM to carrier frequency offset (CFO) poses a major challenge because it leads to orthogonality loss and incurs intercarrier interference (ICI). In this paper, we investigate the bit error rate (BER) performance of SCMA-OFDM systems in the presence of CFO over both Gaussian and multipath Rayleigh fading channels. We first model the ICI in SCMA-OFDM as Gaussian variables conditioned on a single channel realization for fading channels. The BER is then evaluated by averaging over all codeword pairs considering the fading statistics. Through simulations, we validate the accuracy of our BER analysis and reveal that there is a significant BER degradation for SCMA-OFDM systems when the normalized CFO exceeds 0.02.

Enhancing Signal Space Diversity for SCMA Over Rayleigh Fading Channels

Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a promising technique for the enabling of massive connectivity in future machine-type communication networks, but it suffers from a limited diversity order which is a bottleneck for significant improvement of error performance. This paper aims for enhancing the signal space diversity of sparse code multiple access (SCMA) by introducing quadrature component delay to the transmitted codeword of a downlink SCMA system in Rayleigh fading channels. Such a system is called SSD-SCMA throughout this work. By looking into the average mutual information (AMI) and the pairwise error probability (PEP) of the proposed SSD-SCMA, we develop novel codebooks by maximizing the derived AMI lower bound and a modified minimum product distance (MMPD), respectively. The intrinsic asymptotic relationship between the AMI lower bound and proposed MMPD based codebook designs is revealed. Numerical results show significant error performance improvement in the both uncoded and coded SSD-SCMA systems.

A Design of Low-Projection SCMA Codebooks for Ultra-Low Decoding Complexity in Downlink IoT Networks

This paper conceives a novel sparse code multiple access (SCMA) codebook design which is motivated by the strong need for providing ultra-low decoding complexity and good error performance in downlink Internet-of-things (IoT) networks, in which a massive number of low-end and low-cost IoT communication devices are served. By focusing on the typical Rician fading channels, we analyze the pair-wise probability of superimposed SCMA codewords and then deduce the design metrics for multi-dimensional constellation construction and sparse codebook optimization. For significant reduction of the decoding complexity, we advocate the key idea of projecting the multi-dimensional constellation elements to a few overlapped complex numbers in each dimension, called low projection (LP). An emerging modulation scheme, called golden angle modulation (GAM), is considered for multi-stage LP optimization, where the resultant multi-dimensional constellation is called LP-GAM. Our analysis and simulation results show the superiority of the proposed LP codebooks (LPCBs) including one-shot decoding convergence and excellent error rate performance. In particular, the proposed LPCBs lead to decoding complexity reduction by at least $97\%$ compared to that of the conventional codebooks, whilst owning large minimum Euclidean distance. Some examples of the proposed LPCBs are available at \url{https://github.com/ethanlq/SCMA-codebook}.

Designing Enhanced Multi-dimensional Constellations for Code-Domain NOMA

This paper presents an enhanced design of multi-dimensional (MD) constellations which play a pivotal role in many communication systems such as code-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (CD-NOMA). MD constellations are attractive as their structural properties, if properly designed, lead to signal space diversity and hence improved error rate performance. Unlike the existing works which mostly focus on MD constellations with large minimum Euclidean distance (MED), we look for new MD constellations with additional feature that the minimum product distance (MPD) is also large. To this end, a non-convex optimization problem is formulated and then solved by the convex-concave procedure (CCCP). Compared with the state-of-the-art literature, our proposed MD constellations lead to significant error performance enhancement over Rayleigh fading channels whilst maintaining almost the same performance over the Gaussian channels. To demonstrate their application, we also show that these MD constellations give rise to good codebooks in sparse code multiple access systems. All the obtained MD constellations can be found in https://github.com/Aureliano1/Multi-dimensional-constellation.

Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is a promising code-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme for the enabling of massive machine-type communication. In SCMA, the design of good sparse codebooks and efficient multiuser decoding have attracted tremendous research attention in the past few years.
