VFLens: Co-design the Modeling Process for Efficient Vertical Federated Learning via Visualization

As a decentralized training approach, federated learning enables multiple organizations to jointly train a model without exposing their private data. This work investigates vertical federated learning (VFL) to address scenarios where collaborating organizations have the same set of users but with different features, and only one party holds the labels. While VFL shows good performance, practitioners often face uncertainty when preparing non-transparent, internal/external features and samples for the VFL training phase. Moreover, to balance the prediction accuracy and the resource consumption of model inference, practitioners require to know which subset of prediction instances is genuinely needed to invoke the VFL model for inference. To this end, we co-design the VFL modeling process by proposing an interactive real-time visualization system, VFLens, to help practitioners with feature engineering, sample selection, and inference. A usage scenario, a quantitative experiment, and expert feedback suggest that VFLens helps practitioners boost VFL efficiency at a lower cost with sufficient confidence.

RISeer: Inspecting the Status and Dynamics of Regional Industrial Structure via Visual Analytics

Restructuring the regional industrial structure (RIS) has the potential to halt economic recession and achieve revitalization. Understanding the current status and dynamics of RIS will greatly assist in studying and evaluating the current industrial structure. Previous studies have focused on qualitative and quantitative research to rationalize RIS from a macroscopic perspective. Although recent studies have traced information at the industrial enterprise level to complement existing research from a micro perspective, the ambiguity of the underlying variables contributing to the industrial sector and its composition, the dynamic nature, and the large number of multivariant features of RIS records have obscured a deep and fine-grained understanding of RIS. To this end, we propose an interactive visualization system, RISeer, which is based on interpretable machine learning models and enhanced visualizations designed to identify the evolutionary patterns of the RIS and facilitate inter-regional inspection and comparison. Two case studies confirm the effectiveness of our approach, and feedback from experts indicates that RISeer helps them to gain a fine-grained understanding of the dynamics and evolution of the RIS.

PromotionLens: Inspecting Promotion Strategies of Online E-commerce via Visual Analytics

Promotions are commonly used by e-commerce merchants to boost sales. The efficacy of different promotion strategies can help sellers adapt their offering to customer demand in order to survive and thrive. Current approaches to designing promotion strategies are either based on econometrics, which may not scale to large amounts of sales data, or are spontaneous and provide little explanation of sales volume. Moreover, accurately measuring the effects of promotion designs and making bootstrappable adjustments accordingly remains a challenge due to the incompleteness and complexity of the information describing promotion strategies and their market environments. We present PromotionLens, a visual analytics system for exploring, comparing, and modeling the impact of various promotion strategies. Our approach combines representative multivariant time-series forecasting models and well-designed visualizations to demonstrate and explain the impact of sales and promotional factors, and to support "what-if" analysis of promotions. Two case studies, expert feedback, and a qualitative user study demonstrate the efficacy of PromotionLens.

RankAxis: Towards a Systematic Combination of Projection and Ranking in Multi-Attribute Data Exploration

Projection and ranking are frequently used analysis techniques in multi-attribute data exploration. Both families of techniques help analysts with tasks such as identifying similarities between observations and determining ordered subgroups, and have shown good performances in multi-attribute data exploration. However, they often exhibit problems such as distorted projection layouts, obscure semantic interpretations, and non-intuitive effects produced by selecting a subset of (weighted) attributes. Moreover, few studies have attempted to combine projection and ranking into the same exploration space to complement each other's strengths and weaknesses. For this reason, we propose RankAxis, a visual analytics system that systematically combines projection and ranking to facilitate the mutual interpretation of these two techniques and jointly support multi-attribute data exploration. A real-world case study, expert feedback, and a user study demonstrate the efficacy of RankAxis.

Tailoring Terahertz Propagation by Phase and Amplitude Control in Metasurfaces

Using metasurfaces to control the wave propagation at will has been very successful over the broad electromagnetic spectrum in recent years. By encoding specially designed abrupt changes of electromagnetic parameters into metasurfaces, such as phase and amplitude, nearly arbitrary control over the output wavefronts could be realized. Constituted by a single- or fewlayer of planar structures, metasurfaces are straightforward in design and fabrication, thus promising many realistic applications. Moreover, such control concept can be further extended to the surface wave regime. In this review, we present our recent progress on metasurfaces capable of tailoring the propagation of both free-space and surface terahertz waves. Following an introduction of the basic concept and theory, a number of unique terahertz metasurfaces are presented, showing the ability in devising ultra-thin and compact functional terahertz components.

Understanding Players' Interaction Patterns with Mobile Game App UI via Visualizations

Understanding how players interact with the mobile game app on smartphone devices is important for game experts to develop and refine their app products. Conventionally, the game experts achieve their purposes through intensive user studies with target players or iterative UI design processes, which can not capture interaction patterns of large-scale individual players. Visualizing the recorded logs of users' UI operations is a promising way for quantitatively understanding the interaction patterns. However, few visualization tools have been developed for mobile game app interaction, which is challenging with multi-touch dynamic operations and complex UI. In this work, we fill the gap by presenting a visualization approach that aims to understand players' interaction patterns in a multi-touch gaming app with more complex interactions supported by joysticks and a series of skill buttons. Particularly, we identify players' dynamic gesture patterns, inspect the similarities and differences of gesture behaviors, and explore the potential gaps between the current mobile game app UI design and the real-world practice of players. Three case studies indicate that our approach is promising and can be potentially complementary to theoretical UI designs for further research.

Measurement of single-cell elasticity by nanodiamond-sensing of non-local deformation

Nano-indentation based on, e.g., atomic force microscopy (AFM), can measure single cell elasticity with high spatial resolution and sensitivity, but relating the data to cell mechanical properties depends on modeling that requires knowledge about the local contact between the indentation tip and the material, which is unclear in most cases. Here we use the orientation sensing by nitrogen-vacancy centers in nanodiamonds to chart the non-local deformation of fixed HeLa cells induced by AFM indentation, providing data for studying cell mechanics without requiring detailed knowledge about the local contact. The competition between the elasticity and capillarity on the cells is observed. We show that the apparent elastic moduli of the cells would have been overestimated if the capillarity is not considered (as in most previous studies using local depth-loading data). We also find reduction of both elastic moduli and surface tensions due to depolymerization of the actin cytoskeleton structure. This work demonstrates that, under shallow indentation, the nanodiamond sensing of non-local deformation with nanometer precision is particularly suitable for studying mechanics of cells.

Zero-field magnetometry using hyperfine-biased nitrogen-vacancy centers near diamond surfaces

Shallow nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are promising for nano-magnetometry for they can be placed proximate to targets. To study the intrinsic magnetic properties, zero-field magnetometry is desirable. However, for shallow NV centers under zero field, the strain near diamond surfaces would cause level anti-crossing between the spin states, leading to clock transitions whose frequencies are insensitive to magnetic signals. Furthermore, the charge noises from the surfaces would induce extra spin decoherence and hence reduce the magnetic sensitivity. Here we demonstrate that the relatively strong hyperfine coupling (130 MHz) from a first-shell 13C nuclear spin can provide an effective bias field to an NV center spin so that the clock-transition condition is broken and the charge noises are suppressed. The hyperfine bias enhances the dc magnetic sensitivity by a factor of 22 in our setup. With the charge noises suppressed by the strong hyperfine field, the ac magnetometry under zero field also reaches the limit set by decoherence due to the nuclear spin bath. In addition, the 130 MHz splitting of the NV center spin transitions allows relaxometry of magnetic noises simultaneously at two well-separated frequencies (~2.870 +/- 0.065 GHz), providing (low-resolution) spectral information of high-frequency noises under zero field. The hyperfine-bias enhanced zero-field magnetometry can be combined with dynamical decoupling to enhance single-molecule magnetic resonance spectroscopy and to improve the frequency resolution in nanoscale magnetic resonance imaging.

Inspecting the Process of Bank Credit Rating via Visual Analytics

Bank credit rating classifies banks into different levels based on publicly disclosed and internal information, serving as an important input in financial risk management. However, domain experts have a vague idea of exploring and comparing different bank credit rating schemes. A loose connection between subjective and quantitative analysis and difficulties in determining appropriate indicator weights obscure understanding of bank credit ratings. Furthermore, existing models fail to consider bank types by just applying a unified indicator weight set to all banks. We propose RatingVis to assist experts in exploring and comparing different bank credit rating schemes. It supports interactively inferring indicator weights for banks by involving domain knowledge and considers bank types in the analysis loop. We conduct a case study with real-world bank data to verify the efficacy of RatingVis. Expert feedback suggests that our approach helps them better understand different rating schemes.

Superconductivity in Shear Strained Semiconductors

Semiconductivity and superconductivity are remarkable quantum phenomena that have immense impact on science and technology, and materials that can be tuned, usually by pressure or doping, to host both types of quantum states are of great fundamental and practical significance. Here we show by first-principles calculations a distinct route for tuning semiconductors into superconductors by diverse large-range elastic shear strains, as demonstrated in exemplary cases of silicon and silicon carbide. Analysis of strain driven evolution of bonding structure, electronic states, lattice vibration, and electron-phonon coupling unveils robust pervading deformation induced mechanisms auspicious for modulating semiconducting and superconducting states under versatile material conditions. This finding opens vast untapped structural configurations for rational exploration of tunable emergence and transition of these intricate quantum phenomena in a broad range of materials.

Uncertainty-Oriented Ensemble Data Visualization and Exploration using Variable Spatial Spreading

As an important method of handling potential uncertainties in numerical simulations, ensemble simulation has been widely applied in many disciplines. Visualization is a promising and powerful ensemble simulation analysis method. However, conventional visualization methods mainly aim at data simplification and highlighting important information based on domain expertise instead of providing a flexible data exploration and intervention mechanism. Trial-and-error procedures have to be repeatedly conducted by such approaches. To resolve this issue, we propose a new perspective of ensemble data analysis using the attribute variable dimension as the primary analysis dimension. Particularly, we propose a variable uncertainty calculation method based on variable spatial spreading. Based on this method, we design an interactive ensemble analysis framework that provides a flexible interactive exploration of the ensemble data. Particularly, the proposed spreading curve view, the region stability heat map view, and the temporal analysis view, together with the commonly used 2D map view, jointly support uncertainty distribution perception, region selection, and temporal analysis, as well as other analysis requirements. We verify our approach by analyzing a real-world ensemble simulation dataset. Feedback collected from domain experts confirms the efficacy of our framework.

A Visual Analytics Approach to Scheduling Customized Shuttle Buses via Perceiving Passengers' Travel Demands

Shuttle buses have been a popular means to move commuters sharing similar origins and destinations during periods of high travel demand. However, planning and deploying reasonable, customized service bus systems becomes challenging when the commute demand is rather dynamic. It is difficult, if not impossible to form a reliable, unbiased estimation of user needs in such a case using traditional modeling methods. We propose a visual analytics approach to facilitating assessment of actual, varying travel demands and planning of night customized shuttle systems. A preliminary case study verifies the efficacy of our approach.

Friend Network as Gatekeeper: A Study of WeChat Users' Consumption of Friend-Curated Contents

Social media enables users to publish, disseminate, and access information easily. The downside is that it has fewer gatekeepers of what content is allowed to enter public circulation than the traditional media. In this paper, we present preliminary empirical findings from WeChat, a popular messaging app of the Chinese, indicating that social media users leverage their friend networks collectively as latent, dynamic gatekeepers for content consumption. Taking a mixed-methods approach, we analyze over seven million users' information consumption behaviors on WeChat and conduct an online survey of $216$ users. Both quantitative and qualitative evidence suggests that friend network indeed acts as a gatekeeper in social media. Shifting from what should be produced that gatekeepers used to decide, friend network helps separate the worthy from the unworthy for individual information consumption, and its structure and dynamics that play an important role in gatekeeping may inspire the future design of socio-technical systems.

Liquid crystal phases with unusual structures and physical properties formed by acute-angle bent-core molecules

Liquid crystals formed by acute-angle bent-core (ABC) molecules with a 1,7 naphthalene central core show an intriguing phase behavior with the nematic phase accompanied by poorly understood additional phases. In this work, we characterize the physical properties of an ABC material, such as birefringence, dielectric permittivities, elastic constants, and surface alignment, and present X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies of their ordering. The ABC molecular shape resembling the letter $λ$ yields a very small splay elastic constant in the uniaxial nematic phase and results in the formation of a tetragonal positionally ordered columnar phase consisting of molecular columns with a uniform uniaxial director that can be bent but not splayed.

Privileged Features Distillation at Taobao Recommendations

Features play an important role in the prediction tasks of e-commerce recommendations. To guarantee the consistency of off-line training and on-line serving, we usually utilize the same features that are both available. However, the consistency in turn neglects some discriminative features. For example, when estimating the conversion rate (CVR), i.e., the probability that a user would purchase the item if she clicked it, features like dwell time on the item detailed page are informative. However, CVR prediction should be conducted for on-line ranking before the click happens. Thus we cannot get such post-event features during serving. We define the features that are discriminative but only available during training as the privileged features. Inspired by the distillation techniques which bridge the gap between training and inference, in this work, we propose privileged features distillation (PFD). We train two models, i.e., a student model that is the same as the original one and a teacher model that additionally utilizes the privileged features. Knowledge distilled from the more accurate teacher is transferred to the student to improve its accuracy. During serving, only the student part is extracted and it relies on no privileged features. We conduct experiments on two fundamental prediction tasks at Taobao recommendations, i.e., click-through rate (CTR) at coarse-grained ranking and CVR at fine-grained ranking. By distilling the interacted features that are prohibited during serving for CTR and the post-event features for CVR, we achieve significant improvements over their strong baselines. During the on-line A/B tests, the click metric is improved by +5.0% in the CTR task. And the conversion metric is improved by +2.3% in the CVR task. Besides, by addressing several issues of training PFD, we obtain comparable training speed as the baselines without any distillation.

Ultra-sensitive hybrid diamond nanothermometer

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are promising quantum sensors for their long spin coherence time under ambient conditions. However, their spin resonances are relatively insensitive to non-magnetic parameters such as temperature. A magnetic-nanoparticle-nanodiamond hybrid thermometer, where the temperature change is converted to the magnetic field variation near the Curie temperature, was demonstrated to have enhanced temperature sensitivity (11 mK Hz^{-1/2}) [Phys. Rev. X 8, 011042 (2018)], but the sensitivity was limited by the large spectral broadening of ensemble spins in nanodiamonds. To overcome this limitation, here we showed an improved design of a hybrid nanothermometer using a single NV center in a diamond nanopillar coupled with a single magnetic nanoparticle of copper-nickel alloy, and demonstrated a temperature sensitivity of 76 uK Hz^{-1/2}. This hybrid design enabled detection of 2 millikelvins temperature changes with temporal resolution of 5 milliseconds. The ultra-sensitive nanothermometer offers a new tool to investigate thermal processes in nanoscale systems.

EmoCo: Visual Analysis of Emotion Coherence in Presentation Videos

Emotions play a key role in human communication and public presentations. Human emotions are usually expressed through multiple modalities. Therefore, exploring multimodal emotions and their coherence is of great value for understanding emotional expressions in presentations and improving presentation skills. However, manually watching and studying presentation videos is often tedious and time-consuming. There is a lack of tool support to help conduct an efficient and in-depth multi-level analysis. Thus, in this paper, we introduce EmoCo, an interactive visual analytics system to facilitate efficient analysis of emotion coherence across facial, text, and audio modalities in presentation videos. Our visualization system features a channel coherence view and a sentence clustering view that together enable users to obtain a quick overview of emotion coherence and its temporal evolution. In addition, a detail view and word view enable detailed exploration and comparison from the sentence level and word level, respectively. We thoroughly evaluate the proposed system and visualization techniques through two usage scenarios based on TED Talk videos and interviews with two domain experts. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our system in gaining insights into emotion coherence in presentations.
