A constrained Onsager variational framework for parametric approximations of Willmore and Helfrich flows

We develop a constrained Onsager variational framework for parametric finite element approximations of Willmore and Helfrich flows. The weak curvature relation is used as a PDE constraint to express the first variation of the bending energy in curvature-vector form. Onsager's principle then combines this variation with dissipation based on the normal velocity, while an independent relaxed minimal-deformation-rate (relaxed-MDR) constraint selects the tangential velocity. The resulting mixed formulation admits a semidiscretization by continuous piecewise linear elements that satisfies an exact energy-dissipation law and exactly preserves area and volume when the corresponding constraints are imposed. The framework accommodates spatially varying spontaneous curvature and applies to both closed surfaces and open surfaces with fixed boundaries under Navier or clamped conditions. We also propose a linearly implicit fully discrete scheme, prove its unique solvability, and present numerical experiments demonstrating convergence, energy decay, constraint preservation, and effective mesh redistribution.

A unified energy-stable finite element approximation for evolving fluidic biomembranes

We present a unified finite element method for the dynamics of fluidic biomembranes. The model is governed by the Navier--Stokes equations in the bulk coupled to the surface Navier--Stokes equations on the evolving biomembrane surface, with bending forces arising from the Willmore energy. By allowing the bulk mesh velocity to be independent of the fluid velocity and permitting a free tangential surface velocity, we are able to derive a unified weak formulation of the coupled bulk-surface Navier--Stokes system. To address the bending force, we consider an evolution equation for the curvature and propose a surface arbitrary Lagrangian--Eulerian (ALE) weak formulation. Discretization with either fitted or unfitted finite elements leads to well-posed fully discrete linear schemes that are unconditionally energy stable. We present a variety of numerical examples to demonstrate the favourable properties of the proposed methods.

A minimizing-movement framework for geometric gradient flows with admissible tangential motion

We develop a minimizing-movement framework for parametric finite element approximations of geometric gradient flows with admissible tangential motion. At each time step, the discrete variational problem combines a metric dissipation term for the normal displacement with a surface Dirichlet energy. The metric determines the normal geometric evolution: the $L^2(\Gamma)$ metric gives mean curvature flow, while the $H^{-1}(\Gamma)$ metric gives surface diffusion flow. Tangential velocity is selected independently through weak constraints on the deformation map. The central structural condition is admissibility, namely, that the identity map satisfies the constraint. This condition keeps the identity map available as a comparison function and yields the natural stability estimate. The framework recovers the classical Barrett--Garcke--N\"urnberg (BGN) scheme from the unconstrained formulation and the dual minimal-deformation-rate (MDR) scheme from the MDR constraint. We further introduce two new admissible variants: an admissible BGN scheme and a relaxed MDR scheme. For the resulting fully discrete schemes, we prove existence and uniqueness under natural nondegeneracy assumptions and establish unconditional energy stability. Numerical experiments compare the admissible and classical schemes and illustrate their stability properties and mesh-quality behavior.

Geometric structure-preserving parametric finite element approximations for the constrained Helfrich flow

We propose a structure-preserving parametric finite element method for the constrained Helfrich flow of closed curves and surfaces. The proposed method is based on a two-stage velocity-splitting strategy. In the first stage, the normal velocity is computed from a curvature evolution equation, with the volume and surface area constraints imposed softly in terms of the normal velocity. This step approximates the gradient-flow structure of the Helfrich flow, and its fully discrete parametric finite element approximation leads to a linear system and yields an unconditional energy dissipation estimate at the fully discrete level. In the second stage, the surface mesh is updated by combining the computed normal velocity with a BGN-type tangential velocity. A time-weighted interface normal and an area-correction multiplier are also used to enforce exact preservation of the enclosed volume and surface area. This correction step leads to a nonlinear system, which can be efficiently solved by Newton iteration. The resulting method simultaneously achieves energy decay, exact geometric conservation, and good mesh quality. Numerical experiments for two-dimensional curves and three-dimensional surfaces, including nonsmooth initial data and nonzero spontaneous curvature, are presented to demonstrate the accuracy, robustness, and structure-preserving properties of the proposed method.

The Levi-Civita products of Leibniz algebras with nondegenerate skew-symmetric 2-cocycles

This paper studies the associated Levi-Civita products of a Leibniz algebra with a nondegenerate skew-symmetric $2$-cocycle. Such products form into the notion of an anti-pre-Leibniz algebra, which is characterized as a Leibniz-admissible algebra which renders a representation of the sub-adjacent Leibniz algebra through the negative multiplication operators. Such a characterization serves as the converse side of the role that pre-Liebniz algebras play in the splitting theory of Leibniz algebras, which justifies the name of anti-pre-Leibniz algebras. There is a compatible anti-pre-Leibniz algebra structure on a Leibniz algebra if and only if there is an invertible anti-$\mathcal{O}$-operator of the Leibniz algebra. Another important role that anti-pre-Leibniz algebras play is that they give a new characterization of Novikov dialgebras, that is, a Novikov dialgebra is interpreted as a transformed pre-Leibniz algebra which gives rise to an anti-pre-Leibniz algebra structure through specific combinations of multiplications. The properties of Novikov dialgebras are also further investigated.

A further study on averaging commutative and cocommutative infinitesimal bialgebras and special apre-perm bialgebras

In order to generalize the fact that an averaging commutative algebra gives rise to a perm algebra to the bialgebra level, the notion of a special apre-perm algebra was introduced as a new splitting of perm algebras, and it has been shown that an averaging commutative and cocommutative infinitesimal bialgebra gives rise to a special apre-perm bialgebra. In this paper, we give a further study on averaging commutative and cocommutative infinitesimal bialgebras and special apre-perm bialgebras. A solution of the averaging associative Yang-Baxter equation whose symmetric part is invariant gives rise to an averaging commutative and cocommutative infinitesimal bialgebra that is called quasi-triangular, and such solutions can be equivalently characterized as $\mathcal{O}$-operators of admissible averaging commutative algebras with weights. Moreover assuming the symmetric parts of such solutions to be zero or nondegenerate, we obtain typical subclasses of quasi-triangular averaging commutative and cocommutative infinitesimal bialgebras, namely the triangular and factorizable ones respectively. Both of them are shown to closely relate to symmetric averaging Rota-Baxter Frobenius commutative algebras. There is a parallel procedure developed for special apre-perm bialgebras. In particular, the fact that an averaging commutative and cocommutative infinitesimal bialgebra gives rise to a special apre-perm bialgebra is still available when these bialgebras are limited to the quasi-triangular cases.

Generalized splitting of algebras with application to a bialgebra structure of Leibniz algebras induced from averaging Lie bialgebras

The classical notion of splitting a binary quadratic operad $\mathcal{P}$ gives the notion of pre-$\mathcal{P}$-algebras characterized by $\mathcal{O}$-operators, with pre-Lie algebras as a well-known example. Pre-$\mathcal{P}$-algebras give a refinement of the structure of $\mathcal{P}$-algebras and is critical in the Manin triple approach to bialgebras for $\mathcal{P}$-algebras. Motivated by the new types of splitting appeared in recent studies, this paper aims to extend the classical notion of splitting, by relaxing the requirement that the adjoint actions of the pre-$\mathcal{P}$-algebra form a representation of the $\mathcal{P}$-algebra, to allow also linear combinations of the adjoint actions to form a representation. This yields a whole family of type-$M$ pre-structures, parameterized by the coefficient matrix $M$ of the linear combinations. Using the duals of the adjoint actions gives another family of splittings. Similar generalizations are given to the $\mathcal{O}$-operator characterization of the splitting, and to certain conditions on bilinear forms. Furthermore, this general framework is applied to determine the bialgebra structure induced from averaging Lie bialgebras, lifting the well-known fact that an averaging Lie algebra induces a Leibniz algebra to the level of bialgebras. This is achieved by interpreting the desired bialgebra structure for the Leibniz algebra as the one for a special type-$M$ pre-Leibniz algebra for a suitably chosen matrix $M$ in the above family.

Induced structures of averaging commutative and cocommutative infinitesimal bialgebras via a new splitting of perm algebras

It is well-known that an averaging operator on a commutative associative algebra gives rise to a perm algebra. This paper lifts this process to the level of bialgebras. For this purpose, we first give an infinitesimal bialgebra structure for averaging commutative associative algebras and characterize it by double constructions of averaging Frobenius commutative algebras. To find the bialgebra counterpart of perm algebras that is induced by such averaging bialgebras, we need a new two-part splitting of the multiplication in a perm algebra, which differs from the usual splitting of the perm algebra (into the pre-perm algebra) by the characterized representation. This gives rise to the notion of an averaging-pre-perm algebra, or simply an apre-perm algebra. Furthermore, the notion of special apre-perm algebras which are apre-perm algebras with the second multiplications being commutative is introduced as the underlying algebra structure of perm algebras with nondegenerate symmetric left-invariant bilinear forms. The latter are also the induced structures of symmetric Frobenius commutative algebras with averaging operators. Consequently, a double construction of averaging Frobenius commutative algebra gives rise to a Manin triple of special apre-perm algebras. In terms of bialgebra structures, this means that an averaging commutative and cocommutative infinitesimal bialgebra gives rise to a special apre-perm bialgebra.

Thermodynamically Consistent Modeling and Stable ALE Approximations of Reactive Semi-Permeable Interfaces

Reactive, semi-permeable interfaces play important roles in key biological processes such as targeted drug delivery, lipid metabolism, and signal transduction. These systems involve coupled surface reactions, transmembrane transport, and interfacial deformation, often triggered by local biochemical signals. The strong mechanochemical couplings complicate the modeling of such interfacial dynamics. We propose a thermodynamically consistent continuum framework that integrates bulk fluid motion, interfacial dynamics, surface chemistry, and selective solute exchange, derived via an energy variation approach to ensure mass conservation and energy dissipation. To efficiently solve the resulting coupled system, we develop a finite element scheme within an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) framework, incorporating the Barrett-Garcke-Nurnberg (BGN) strategy to maintain mesh regularity and preserve conservation laws. Numerical experiments verify the convergence and conservation properties of the scheme and demonstrate its ability in capturing complex interfacial dynamics. Two biologically inspired examples showcase the model's versatility: cholesterol efflux via the ABCG1 pathway, involving multistage interfacial reactions and HDL uptake; and a self-propelled droplet system with reaction-activated permeability, mimicking drug release in pathological environments. This work provides a unified computational platform for studying strongly coupled biochemical and mechanical interactions at interfaces, offering new insights into reactive transport processes in both biological and industrial contexts.

An energy-stable parametric finite element method for Willmore flow with normal-tangential velocity splitting

We propose and analyze an energy-stable fully discrete parametric approximation for Willmore flow of hypersurfaces in two and three space dimensions. We allow for the presence of spontaneous curvature effects and for open surfaces with boundary. The presented scheme is based on a new geometric partial differential equation (PDE) that combines an evolution equation for the mean curvature with a separate equation that prescribes the tangential velocity. The mean curvature is used to determine the normal velocity within the gradient flow structure, thus guaranteeing an unconditional energy stability for the discrete solution upon suitable discretization. We introduce a novel weak formulation for this geometric PDE, in which different types of boundary conditions can be naturally enforced. We further discretize the weak formulation to obtain a fully discrete parametric finite element method, for which well-posedness can be rigorously shown. Moreover, the constructed scheme admits an unconditional stability estimate in terms of the discrete energy. Extensive numerical experiments are reported to showcase the accuracy and robustness of the proposed method for computing Willmore flow of both curves in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$.

Stable fully practical finite element methods for axisymmetric Willmore flow

We consider fully discrete numerical approximations for axisymmetric Willmore flow that are unconditionally stable and work reliably without remeshing. We restrict our attention to surfaces without boundary, but allow for spontaneous curvature effects. The axisymmetric setting allows us to formulate our schemes in terms of the generating curve of the considered surface. We propose a novel weak formulation, that combines an evolution equation for the surface's mean curvature and the curvature identity of the generating curve. The mean curvature is used to describe the gradient flow structure, which enables an unconditional stability result for the discrete solutions. The generating curve's curvature, on the other hand, describes the surface's in-plane principal curvature and plays the role of a Lagrange multiplier for an equidistribution property on the discrete level. We introduce two fully discrete schemes and prove their unconditional stability. Numerical results are provided to confirm the convergence, stability and equidistribution properties of the introduced schemes.

Stable fully discrete finite element methods with BGN tangential motion for Willmore flow of planar curves

We propose and analyze stable finite element approximations for Willmore flow of planar curves. The presented schemes are based on a novel weak formulation which combines an evolution equation for curvature with the curvature formulation originally proposed by Barrett, Garcke and N\"urnberg (BGN) in \cite{BGN07}. Under discretization in space with piecewise linear elements this leads to a stable continuous-in-time semidiscrete scheme, which retains the equidistribution property from the BGN methods. Furthermore, two fully discrete schemes can be shown to satisfy unconditional energy stability estimates. Numerical examples are presented to showcase the good properties of the introduced schemes, including an asymptotic equidistribution of vertices.

A structure-preserving parametric finite element method for solid-state dewetting on curved substrates

We consider a two-dimensional sharp-interface model for solid-state dewetting of thin films with anisotropic surface energies on curved substrates, where the film/vapor interface and substrate surface are represented by an evolving and a static curve, respectively. The model is governed by the anisotropic surface diffusion for the evolving curve, with appropriate boundary conditions at the contact points where the two curves meet. The continuum model obeys an energy decay law and preserves the enclosed area between the two curves. We introduce an arclength parameterization for the substrate curve, which plays a crucial role in a structure-preserving approximation as it straightens the curved substrate and tracks length changes between contact points. Based on this insight, we introduce a symmetrized weak formulation which leads to an unconditional energy stable parametric approximation in terms of the discrete energy. We also provide an error estimate of the enclosed area, which depends on the substrate profile and can be zero in the case of a flat substrate. Furthermore, we introduce a correction to the discrete normals to enable an exact area preservation for general curved substrates. The resulting nonlinear system is efficiently solved using a hybrid iterative algorithm which combines both Picard and Newton's methods. Numerical results are presented to show the robustness and good properties of the introduced method for simulating solid-state dewetting on various curved substrates.

Dynamics of Small Solid Particles on Substrates of Arbitrary Topography

We study the dynamics of a small solid particle arising from the dewetting of a thin film on a curved substrate driven by capillarity, where mass transport is controlled by surface diffusion. We consider the case when the size of the deposited particle is much smaller than the local radius of curvature of the substrate surface. The application of the Onsager variational principle leads to a reduced-order model for the dynamic behaviour of particles on arbitrarily curved substrates. We demonstrate that particles move toward region of the substrate surface with lower mean curvature with a determined velocity. In particular, the velocity is proportional to the substrate curvature gradient and inversely proportional to the size of the particle, with a coefficient that depends on material properties that include the surface energy, surface diffusivity, density, and Young's (wetting) angle. The reduced model is validated by comparing with numerical results for the full, sharp-interface model in both two and three dimensions.

A variational front-tracking method for multiphase flow with triple junctions

We present and analyze a variational front-tracking method for a sharp-interface model of multiphase flow. The fluid interfaces between different phases are represented by curve networks in two space dimensions (2d) or surface clusters in three space dimensions (3d) with triple junctions where three interfaces meet, and boundary points/lines where an interface meets a fixed planar boundary. The model is described by the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations in the bulk domains, with classical interface conditions on the fluid interfaces, and appropriate boundary conditions at the triple junctions and boundary points/lines. We propose a weak formulation for the model, which combines a parametric formulation for the evolving interfaces and an Eulerian formulation for the bulk equations. We employ an unfitted discretization of the coupled formulation to obtain a fully discrete finite element method, where the existence and uniqueness of solutions can be shown under weak assumptions. The constructed method admits an unconditional stability result in terms of the discrete energy. Furthermore, we adapt the introduced method so that an exact volume preservation for each phase can be achieved for the discrete solutions. Numerical examples for three-phase flow and four-phase flow are presented to show the robustness and accuracy of the introduced methods.

Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian finite element approximations for axisymmetric two-phase flow

We analyze numerical approximations for axisymmetric two-phase flow in the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) framework. We consider a parametric formulation for the evolving fluid interface in terms of a one-dimensional generating curve. For the two-phase Navier-Stokes equations, we introduce both conservative and nonconservative ALE weak formulations in the 2d meridian half-plane. Piecewise linear parametric elements are employed for discretizing the moving interface, which is then coupled to a moving finite element approximation of the bulk equations. This leads to a variety of ALE methods, which enjoy either an equidistribution property or unconditional stability. Furthermore, we adapt these introduced methods with the help of suitable time-weighted discrete normals, so that the volume of the two phases is exactly preserved on the discrete level. Numerical results for rising bubbles and oscillating droplets are presented to show the efficiency and accuracy of these introduced methods.

Unfitted finite element methods for axisymmetric two-phase flow

We propose and analyze unfitted finite element approximations for the two-phase incompressible Navier--Stokes flow in an axisymmetric setting. The discretized schemes are based on an Eulerian weak formulation for the Navier--Stokes equation in the 2d-meridian halfplane, together with a parametric formulation for the generating curve of the evolving interface. We use the lowest order Taylor--Hood and piecewise linear elements for discretizing the Navier--Stokes formulation in the bulk and the moving interface, respectively. We discuss a variety of schemes, amongst which is a linear scheme that enjoys an equidistribution property on the discrete interface and good volume conservation. An alternative scheme can be shown to be unconditionally stable and to conserve the volume of the two phases exactly. Numerical results are presented to show the robustness and accuracy of the introduced methods for simulating both rising bubble and oscillating droplet experiments.
