Powerful numbers in $(1^{\ell}+q^{\ell})(2^{\ell}+q^{\ell})\cdots (n^{\ell}+q^{\ell})$

Let $q$ be a positive integer. Recently, Niu and Liu proved that if $n\ge \max\{q,1198-q\}$, then the product $(1^3+q^3)(2^3+q^3)\cdots (n^3+q^3)$ is not a powerful number. In this note, we prove that (i) for any odd prime power $\ell$ and $n\ge \max\{q,11-q\}$, the product $(1^{\ell}+q^{\ell})(2^{\ell}+q^{\ell})\cdots (n^{\ell}+q^{\ell})$ is not a powerful number; (2) for any positive odd integer $\ell$, there exists an integer $N_{q,\ell}$ such that for any positive integer $n\ge N_{q,\ell}$, the product $(1^{\ell}+q^{\ell})(2^{\ell}+q^{\ell})\cdots (n^{\ell}+q^{\ell})$ is not a powerful number.

On a conjecture of Erdős about sets without $k$ pairwise coprime integers

Let $\mathbb{Z}^{+}$ be the set of positive integers. Let $C_{k}$ denote all subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^{+}$ such that neither of them contains $k + 1$ pairwise coprime integers and $C_k(n)=C_k\cap \{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Let $f(n, k) = \text{max}_{A \in C_{k}(n)}|A|$, where $|A|$ denotes the number of elements of the set $A$. Let $E_k(n)$ be the set of positive integers not exceeding $n$ which are divisible by at least one of the primes $p_{1}, \dots{}, p_{k}$, where $p_{i}$ denote the $i$th prime number. In 1962, Erdős conjectured that $f(n, k) = |E(n,k)|$ for every $n \ge p_{k}$. Recently Chen and Zhou proved some results about this conjecture. In this paper we solve an open problem of Chen and Zhou and prove several related results about the conjecture.

On some properties of representation functions related to the Erdős-Turán conjecture

For a set $A\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ and $n\in \mathbb{N}$, let $R_A(n)$ denote the number of ordered pairs $(a,a')\in A\times A$ such that $a+a'=n$. The celebrated Erdős-Turán conjecture says that, if $R_A(n)\ge 1$ for all sufficiently large integers $n$, then the representation function $R_A(n)$ cannot be bounded. For any positive integer $m$, Ruzsa's number $R_m$ is defined to be the least positive integer $r$ such that there exists a set $A\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_m$ with $1\le R_A(n)\le r$ for all $n\in \mathbb{Z}_m$. In 2008, Chen proved that $R_{m}\le 288$ for all positive integers $m$. Recently the authors proved that $R_m\ge 6$ for all integers $m\ge 36$. In this paper, we prove that if $A\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_m$ satisfies $R_A(n)\le 5$ for all $n\in \mathbb{Z}_m$, then $|\{g:g\in \mathbb{Z}_m, R_A(g)=0\}|\ge \frac{1}{4}m-\sqrt{5m}$. This improves a recent result of Li and Chen. We also give upper bounds of $|\{g:g\in \mathbb{Z}_m, R_A(g)=i\}|$ for $i=2,4$.

A lower bound of Ruzsa's number related to the Erdős-Turán conjecture

In this paper, we prove that $R_m\ge 6$ for all integers $m\ge 36$. We also determine all values of $R_m$ when $m\le 35$.

On the sumsets of exceptional units in $\mathbb{Z}_n$

Let $R$ be a commutative ring with $1\in R$ and $R^{\ast}$ be the multiplicative group of its units. In 1969, Nagell introduced the exceptional unit $u$ if both $u$ and $1-u$ belong to $R^{\ast}$. Let $\mathbb{Z}_n$ be the ring of residue classes modulo $n$. In this paper, given an integer $k\ge 2$, we obtain an exact formula for the number of ways to represent each element of $ \mathbb{Z}_n$ as the sum of $k$ exceptional units. This generalizes a recent result of J. W. Sander for the case $k=2$.

On the cardinality of general $h$-fold sumsets

Let $A=\{a_0,a_1,\ldots,a_{k-1}\}$ be a set of $k$ integers. For any integer $h\ge 1$ and any ordered $k$-tuple of positive integers $\mathbf{r}=(r_0,r_1,\ldots,r_{k-1})$, we define a general $h$-fold sumset, denoted by $h^{(\mathbf{r})}A$, which is the set of all sums of $h$ elements of $A$, where $a_i$ appearing in the sum can be repeated at most $r_i$ times for $i=0,1,\ldots,k-1$. In this paper, we give the best lower bound for $|h^{(\mathbf{r})}A|$ in terms of $\mathbf{r}$ and $h$ and determine the structure of the set $A$ when $|h^{(\mathbf{r})}A|$ is minimal. This generalizes results of Nathanson, and recent results of Mistri and Pandey and also solves a problem of Mistri and Pandey.

Density of integral sets with missing differences

Motzkin posed the problem of finding the maximal density $μ(M)$ of sets of integers in which the differences given by a set $M$ do not occur. The problem is already settled when $|M|\leq 2$ and $M$ is a finite arithmetic progression. In this paper, we determine $μ(M)$ when $M$ has some other structure. For example, we determine $μ(M)$ when $M$ is a finite geometric progression.

Weighted representation functions on $\mathbb{Z}_m$

Let $m$, $k_1$, and $k_2$ be three integers with $m\ge 2$. For any set $A\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_m$ and $n\in \mathbb{Z}_m$, let $\hat{r}_{k_1,k_2}(A,n)$ denote the number of solutions of the equation $n=k_1a_1+k_2a_2$ with $a_1,a_2\in A$. In this paper, using exponential sums, we characterize all $m$, $k_1$, $k_2$, and $A$ for which $\hat{r}_{k_1,k_2}(A,n)=\hat{r}_{k_1,k_2}(\mathbb{Z}_m\setminus A,n)$ for all $n\in \mathbb{Z}_m$. We also pose several problems for further research.

An identity on the $2m$-th power mean value of the generalized Gauss sums

In this paper, using combinatorial and analytic methods, we prove an exact calculating formula on the $2m$-th power mean value of the generalized quadratic Gauss sums for $m\geq 2$. This solves a conjecture of He and Zhang [`On the $2k$-th power mean value of the generalized quadratic Gauss sums', Bull. Korean Math. Soc. 48 (2011), No.1, 9-15].
