Harmonic analysis on quantum tori

This paper is devoted to the study of harmonic analysis on quantum tori. We consider several summation methods on these tori, including the square Fejér means, square and circular Poisson means, and Bochner-Riesz means. We first establish the maximal inequalities for these means, then obtain the corresponding pointwise convergence theorems. In particular, we prove the noncommutative analogue of the classical Stein theorem on Bochner-Riesz means. The second part of the paper deals with Fourier multipliers on quantum tori. We prove that the completely bounded $L_p$ Fourier multipliers on a quantum torus are exactly those on the classical torus of the same dimension. Finally, we present the Littlewood-Paley theory associated with the circular Poisson semigroup on quantum tori. We show that the Hardy spaces in this setting possess the usual properties of Hardy spaces, as one can expect. These include the quantum torus analogue of Fefferman's $\mathrm{H}_1$-BMO duality theorem and interpolation theorems. Our analysis is based on the recent developments of noncommutative martingale/ergodic inequalities and Littlewood-Paley-Stein theory.

Bounds on the distance between a unital quantum channel and the convex hull of unitary channels, with applications to the asymptotic quantum Birkhoff conjecture

Motivated by the recent resolution of Asymptotic Quantum Birkhoff Conjecture (AQBC), we attempt to estimate the distance between a given unital quantum channel and the convex hull of unitary channels. We provide two lower bounds on this distance by employing techniques from quantum information and operator algebras, respectively. We then show how to apply these results to construct some explicit counterexamples to AQBC. We also point out an interesting connection between the Grothendieck's inequality and AQBC.

On the vector-valued Littlewood-Paley-Rubio de Francia inequality

The paper studies Banach spaces satisfying the Littlewood-Paley-Rubio de Francia property LPR_p, 2 \leq p < \infty. The paper shows that every Banach lattice whose 2-concavification is a UMD Banach lattice has this property. The paper also shows that every space having LPR_q also has LPR_p with q \leq p < \infty.

Maximal theorems and square functions for analytic operators on Lp-spaces

Let T : Lp --> Lp be a contraction, with p strictly between 1 and infinity, and assume that T is analytic, that is, there exists a constant K such that n\norm{T^n-T^{n-1}} < K for any positive integer n. Under the assumption that T is positive (or contractively regular), we establish the boundedness of various Littlewood-Paley square functions associated with T. As a consequence we show maximal inequalities of the form $\norm{\sup_{n\geq 0}\, (n+1)^m\bigl |T^n(T-I)^m(x) \bigr |}_p\,\lesssim\, \norm{x}_p$, for any nonnegative integer m. We prove similar results in the context of noncommutative Lp-spaces. We also give analogs of these maximal inequalities for bounded analytic semigroups, as well as applications to R-boundedness properties.

Characterization of multiqubit pure-state entanglement

A necessary and sufficient entanglement criterion based on variances of Mermin-Klyshko's Bell operators is proved for multiqubit pure states. Contrary to Bell's inequalities, entangled pure states strictly satisfy a quadratic inequality but product ones can attain the equality under some local unitary transformations, which can be obtained by solving a quadratic maximum problem. This presents a characterization of multiqubit pure-state entanglement.

A reduction method for noncommutative $L_p$-spaces and applications

We consider the reduction of problems on general noncommutative $L_p$-spaces to the corresponding ones on those associated with finite von Neumann algebras. The main tool is a unpublished result of the first named author which approximates any noncommutative $L_p$-space by tracial ones. We show that under some natural conditions a map between two von Neumann algebras extends to their crossed products by a locally compact abelian group or to their noncommutative $L_p$-spaces. We present applications of these results to the theory of noncommutative martingale inequalities by reducing most recent general noncommutative martingale/ergodic inequalities to those in the tracial case.

Complex interpolation of weighted noncommutative $L_p$-spaces

Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a semifinite von Neumann algebra equipped with a semifinite normal faithful trace $τ$. Let $d$ be an injective positive measurable operator with respect to $(\mathcal{M}, τ)$ such that $d^{-1}$ is also measurable. Define $$L_p(d)={x\in L_0(\mathcal{M}) : dx+xd\in L_p(\mathcal{M})}\quad{and}\quad \|x\|_{L_p(d)}=\|dx+xd\|_p .$$ We show that for $1\le p_0<p_1\le\8$, $0<θ<1$ and $α_0\ge0, α_1\ge0$ the interpolation equality $$(L_{p_0}(d^{α_0}), L_{p_1}(d^{α_1}))_θ =L_{p}(d^α)$$ holds with equivalent norms, where $\frac1p=\frac{1-θ}{p_0}+\fracθ{p_1}$ and $α=(1-θ)α_0+θα_1$.

Representation of certain homogeneous Hilbertian operator spaces and applications

Following Grothendieck's characterization of Hilbert spaces we consider operator spaces $F$ such that both $F$ and $F^*$ completely embed into the dual of a C*-algebra. Due to Haagerup/Musat's improved version of Pisier/Shlyakhtenko's Grothendieck inequality for operator spaces, these spaces are quotients of subspaces of the direct sum $C\oplus R$ of the column and row spaces (the corresponding class being denoted by $QS(C\oplus R)$). We first prove a representation theorem for homogeneous $F\in QS(C\oplus R)$ starting from the fundamental sequences defined by column and row norms of unit vectors. Under a mild regularity assumption on these sequences we show that they completely determine the operator space structure of $F$ and find a canonical representation of this important class of homogeneous Hilbertian operator spaces in terms of weighted row and column spaces. This canonical representation allows us to get an explicit formula for the exactness constant of an $n$-dimensional subspace $F_n$ of $F$ involving the fundamental sequences. Similarly, we have formulas for the the projection (=injectivity) constant of $F_n$. They also permit us to determine the completely 1-summing maps in Effros and Ruan's sense between two homogeneous spaces $E$ and $F$ in $QS(C\oplus R)$.

BMO functions and Carleson measures with values in uniformly convex spaces

This paper studies the relationship between vector-valued BMO functions and the Carleson measures defined by their gradients. Let $dA$ and $dm$ denote Lebesgue measures on the unit disc $D$ and the unit circle $\mathbb T$, respectively. For $1< q<\infty$ and a Banach space $B$ we prove that there exists a positive constant $c$ such that $$\sup_{z_0\in D}\int_{D}(1-|z|)^{q-1}\|\nabla f(z)\|^q P_{z_0}(z) dA(z) \le c^q\sup_{z_0\in D}\int_{\T}\|f(z)-f(z_0)\|^qP_{z_0}(z) dm(z)$$ holds for all trigonometric polynomials $f$ with coefficients in $B$ iff $B$ admits an equivalent norm which is $q$-uniformly convex, where $$P_{z_0}(z)=\frac{1-|z_0|^2}{|1-\bar{z_0}z|^2} .$$ The validity of the converse inequality is equivalent to the existence of an equivalent $q$-uniformly smooth norm.

Riesz and Szegö type factorizations for noncommutative Hardy spaces

Let $\A$ be a finite subdiagonal algebra in Arveson's sense. Let $H^p(\A)$ be the associated noncommutative Hardy spaces, $0<p\le\8$. We extend to the case of all positive indices most recent results about these spaces, which include notably the Riesz, Szegö and inner-outer type factorizations. One new tool of the paper is the contractivity of the underlying conditional expectation on $H^p(\A)$ for $p<1$.

Noncommutative Burkholder/Rosenthal inequalities II: applications

We show norm estimates for the sum of independent random variables in noncommutative $L_p$-spaces for $1<p<\infty$ following our previous work. These estimates generalize the classical Rosenthal inequality in the commutative case. Among applications, we derive an equivalence for the $p$-norm of the singular values of a random matrix with independent entries, and characterize those symmetric subspaces and unitary ideals which can be realized as subspaces of a noncommutative $L_p$ for $2<p<\infty$.

The little Grothendieck theorem and Khintchine inequalities for symmetric spaces of measurable operators

We prove the little Grothendieck theorem for any 2-convex noncommutative symmetric space. Let $\M$ be a von Neumann algebra equipped with a normal faithful semifinite trace $\t$, and let $E$ be an r.i. space on $(0, \8)$. Let $E(\M)$ be the associated symmetric space of measurable operators. Then to any bounded linear map $T$ from $E(\M)$ into a Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ corresponds a positive norm one functional $f\in E_{(2)}(\M)^*$ such that $$\forall x\in E(\M)\quad \|T(x)\|^2\le K^2 \|T\|^2 f(x^*x+xx^*),$$ where $E_{(2)}$ denotes the 2-concavification of $E$ and $K$ is a universal constant. As a consequence we obtain the noncommutative Khintchine inequalities for $E(\M)$ when $E$ is either 2-concave or 2-convex and $q$-concave for some $q<\8$. We apply these results to the study of Schur multipliers from a 2-convex unitary ideal into a 2-concave one.

Noncommutative maximal ergodic theorems

This paper is devoted to the study of various maximal ergodic theorems in noncommutative $L_p$-spaces. In particular, we prove the noncommutative analogue of the classical Dunford-Schwartz maximal ergodic inequality for positive contractions on $L_p$ and the analogue of Stein's maximal inequality for symmetric positive contractions. We also obtain the corresponding individual ergodic theorems. We apply these results to a family of natural examples which frequently appear in theory of von Neumann algebras and in quantum probability.

$H^{\infty}$ functional calculus and square functions on noncommutative $L^p$-spaces

In this work we investigate semigroups of operators acting on noncommutative $L^p$-spaces. We introduce noncommutative square functions and their connection to sectoriality, variants of Rademacher sectoriality, and $H^\infty$ functional calculus. We discuss several examples of noncommutative diffusion semigroups. This includes Schur multipliers, $q$-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroups, and the noncommutative Poisson semigroup on free groups.

Rosenthal type inequalities for free chaos

Let $\mathcal{A}$ denote the reduced amalgamated free product of a family $\mathsf{A}_1, \mathsf{A}_2, ..., \mathsf{A}_n$ of von Neumann algebras over a von Neumann subalgebra $\Be$ with respect to normal faithful conditional expectations $\Es_k: \mathsf{A}_k \to \Be$. We investigate the norm in $L_p(\Al)$ of homogeneous polynomials of a given degree $d$. We first generalize Voiculescu's inequality to arbitrary degree $d \ge 1$ and indices $1 \le p \le \infty$. This can be regarded as a free analogue of the classical Rosenthal inequality. Our second result is a length-reduction formula from which we generalize recent results of Pisier, Ricard and the authors. All constants in our estimates are independent of $n$ so that we may consider infinitely many free factors. As applications, we study square functions of free martingales. More precisely we show that, in contrast with the Khintchine and Rosenthal inequalities, the free analogue of the Burkholder-Gundy inequalities does not hold on $L_\infty(\Al)$. At the end of the paper we also consider Khintchine type inequalities for Shlyakhtenko's generalized circular systems.

Vector-valued Littlewood-Paley-Stein theory for semigroups

We develop a generalized Littlewood-Paley theory for semigroups acting on $L^p$-spaces of functions with values in uniformly convex or smooth Banach spaces. We characterize, in the vector-valued setting, the validity of the one-sided inequalities concerning the generalized Littlewood-Paley-Stein $g$-function associated with a subordinated Poisson symmetric diffusion semigroup by the martingale cotype and type properties of the underlying Banach space. We show that in the case of the usual Poisson semigroup and the Poisson semigroup subordinated to the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup on ${\mathbb R}^n$, this general theory becomes more satisfactory (and easier to be handled) in virtue of the theory of vector-valued Calderón-Zygmund singular integral operators.
