Further Characterization of the JadePix-3 CMOS Pixel Sensor for the CEPC Vertex Detector: in Dependence of Substrate Reverse Bias

The Circular Electron-Positron Collider (CEPC), a proposed next-generation $e^+e^-$ collider to enable high-precision studies of the Higgs boson and potential new physics, imposes rigorous demands on detector technologies, particularly the vertex detector. JadePix-3 is a prototype Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MAPS) designed for the CEPC vertex detector. This paper presents a detailed laboratory-based characterization of the JadePix-3 sensor, focusing on the previously under-explored effects of substrate reverse bias voltage on key performance metrics: charge collection efficiency, average cluster size, and hit efficiency of laser. Systematic testing demonstrated that JadePix-3 operates reliably under reverse bias, exhibiting a reduced input capacitance, an expanded depletion region, enhanced charge collection efficiency, and a lower fake-hit rate. These findings confirm the sensor's potential for high-precision particle tracking and vertexing at the CEPC while offering valuable references for future iterational R\&D of the JadePix series.

Performance study of the JadePix-3 telescope from a beam test

We present the results of a beam test conducted on a telescope using the JadePix-3 pixel sensor, developed with TowerJazz 180 nm CMOS imaging technology. The telescope is composed of five planes, each equipped with a JadePix-3 sensor with pitches of 26 um x 16 um and 23.11 um x 16 um. In addition, it features an FPGA-based synchronous readout system. The telescope underwent testing using an electron beam with energy ranging from 4 to 6 GeV. At an electron energy of 5.4 GeV, the telescope demonstrated superior spatial resolutions of 2.6 and 2.3 um in two dimensions. By designating the central plane as the device under test, we evaluated the JadePix-3 sensor's spatial resolutions as 5.2 and 4.6 um in two dimensions, achieving a detection efficiency of over 99%.

Characterization of SOI pixel sensor using pinned depleted diode structure with AC-coupling on the diode

The experiment of the future electron-positron colliders has unprecedented requirements on the vertex resolution, such as around 3micron single point resolution for the inner most detector layer, with fast readout, and very low power-consumption density and material budget. Significant efforts have been put into the development of monolithic silicon pixel sensors, but there have been some challenges to combine all those stringent specifications in a small pixel area. This paper presents a compact prototype pixel sensor fabricated in LAPIS 200nm SOI process and focuses on the characterization of low capacitance of the sensing node with a pinned depleted diode structure adopting a novel method of forward bias voltage and AC coupling on the diode. Three PDD structures with 16 micron by 20 micron pixel size were designed and compared using radioactive sources and injected charge. The measured result shows that the designed PDD structure has very low leakage current and around 3.5fF of equivalent input capacitance.

Feasibility study of TPC tracker detector for the circular collider

The discovery of a SM Higgs boson at the LHC brought about great opportunity to investigate the feasibility of a Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) operating at center-of-mass energy of $\sim 240$ GeV, as a Higgs factory, with designed luminosity of about $2\times 10^{34}cm^{-2}s^{-1}$. The CEPC provides a much cleaner collision environment than the LHC, it is ideally suited for studying the properties of Higgs boson with greater precision. Another advantage of the CEPC over the LHC is that the Higgs boson can be detected through the recoil mass method by only reconstructing Z boson decay without examining the Higgs decays. In Concept Design Report(CDR), the circumference of CEPC is 100km, with two interaction points available for exploring different detector design scenarios and technologies. The baseline design of CEPC detector is an ILD-like concept, with a superconducting solenoid of 3.0 Tesla surrounding the inner silicon detector, TPC tracker detector and the calorimetry system. Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) have been extensively studied and used in many fields, especially in particle physics experiments, including STAR and ALICE. The TPC detector will operate in continuous mode on the circular machine. To fulfill the physics goals of the future circular collider and meet Higgs/$Z$ run, a TPC with excellent performance is required. We have proposed and investigated the ions controlling performance of a novel configuration detector module. The aim of this study is to suppress ion backflow ($IBF$) continually. In this paper, some update results of the feasibility and limitation on TPC detector technology R$\&$D will be given using the hybrid gaseous detector module.

Design and optimization of resistive anode for a two-dimensional imaging triple-GEM detector

The optimization of resistive anode for two dimensional imaging detectors which consists of a series of high resistive square pads surrounding by low resistive strips has been studied by both numerical simulations and experimental tests. It has been found that to obtain good detector performance, the resistance ratio of the pad to the strip should be larger than 5, the nonuniformity of the pad surface resistivity had better be less than $20\%$, a smaller pad width leads to a smaller spatial resolution and when the pad width is $6mm$, the spatial resolution ($σ$) can reach about $105μm$. Based on the study results, a 2-D GEM detector prototype with the optimized resistive anode is constructed and a good imaging performance is achieved.

Study of the Tracking Method and Expected Performance of the Silicon Pixel Inner Tracker Applied in BESIII

The inner drift chamber of the BESIII is encountering serious aging problem after five year's running. For the first layer, the decrease in gas gain is about 26% from 2009 to 2013. The upgrade of the inner tracking detector has become an urgent problem for the BESIII experiment. An inner tracker using CMOS pixel sensors is an important candidate because of its great advantages on spatial resolution and radiation hardness. In order to carry out a Monte Carlo study on the expected performance, a Geant4-based full simulation for the silicon pixel detector has been implemented. The tracking method combining the silicon pixel inner tracker and outer drift chamber has been studied and a preliminary reconstruction software was developed. The Monte Carlo study shows that the performances including momentum resolution, vertex resolution and the tracking efficiency are significantly improved due to the good spatial resolution and moderate material budget of the silicon pixel detector.

A study on the shielding mechanisms of SOI pixel detector

In order to tackle the charge injection issue that had perplexed the counting type SOI pixel for years, two successive chips CPIXTEG3 and CPIXTEG3b were developed utilizing two shielding mechanisms, Nested-well and Double-SOI, in the LAPIS process. A TCAD simulation showed the shielding effectiveness influenced by the high sheet resistance of shielding layers. Test structures specially designed to measure the crosstalk associated to charge injection were implemented in CPIXTEG3/3b. Measurement results proved that using shielding layer is indispensable for counting type pixel and Double-SOI is superior to Nested-well in terms of shielding effectiveness and design flexibility.

Test of a fine pitch SOI pixel detector with laser beam

A silicon pixel detector with fine pitch size of 19x19 um, developed base on SOI (silicon on insulator) technology, was tested under the illumination of infrared laser pulses. As an alternative way to particle beam tests, the laser pulses were tuned to very short duration and small transverse profile to simulate the tracks of MIPs (minimum ionization particles) in silicon. Hit cluster sizes were measured with focused laser pulses propagating through the SOI detector perpendicular to its surface and most of the induced charge was found to be collected inside the seed pixel. For the first time, the signal amplitude as a function of the applied bias voltage was measured for this SOI detector, deepening understanding of its depletion characteristics.

Investigation of GEM-Micromegas Detector on X-ray Beam of Synchrotron Radiation

To solve the discharge of the standard Bulk Micromegas and GEM detector, the GEM-Micromegas detector was developed in Institute of High Energy Physics. Taking into account the advantages of the two detectors, one GEM foil was set as a preamplifier on the mesh of Micromegas in the structure and the GEM preamplification decreased the working voltage of Micromegas to reduce the effect of the discharge significantly. In the paper, the performance of detector in X-ray beam was studied at 1W2B laboratory of Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility. Finally, the result of the energy resolution under various X-ray energies was given in different working gases. It indicated that the GEM-Micromegas detector had the energy response capability in all the energy range and it could work better than the standard Bulk-Micromegas.

Study of measuring methods on spatial resolution of a GEM imaging detector

In this paper, limitations of the common method measuring intrinsic spatial resolution of the GEM imaging detector are presented. Through theoretical analysis and experimental verification, we have improved the common method to avoid these limitations. Using these improved methods, more precise measurement of intrinsic spatial resolution are obtained.
