Artificial Intelligence in a Photonic Temporal Processor

Optical neural networks (ONNs) promise high-throughput and energy-efficient artificial intelligence, yet essentially all implementations so far encode information across space either in free-space arrays or in integrated waveguide meshes, tying the number of neurons to the number of physical components and fixes the routing topology at fabrication. Here we show that moving the computation into time decouples computational dimension from hardware dimension. Exploiting space-time duality, we implement optical diffraction and interference entirely in time domain, using thin-film lithium niobate modulators as time lenses and temporal masks, with chromatic dispersion providing the coupling between successive temporal neurons. We experimentally verify high-order, complex-valued matrix-matrix multiplications using just a single optical input/output port, scaling the computational dimensions far beyond the channel count. By incorporating optical feedback, we extend this platform into versatile neural networks, where the network layers, neuron numbers, and synaptic connections are fully programmable and in-situ trainable. Our temporal diffractive neural networks are successfully validated on various classification benchmarks, alongside image and video generation tasks. Notably, using this platform we demonstrate an all-analogue generative pipeline in which the latent variable is drawn directly from amplified spontaneous emission, so that no digital sampling or electronic modulation appears anywhere in the generative path. Furthermore, high-resolution images and videos are generated at high frame rates, outperforming state-of-the-art modulator-refresh-limited optical generative systems. These results establish a unified photonic temporal computing framework, providing a scalable and deployable pathway toward next-generation machine intelligence.

Assessment of Intra-channel Fiber Nonlinearity Compensation in 200 GBaud and Beyond Coherent Optical Transmission Systems

In this paper, we investigate and assess the performance of intra-channel nonlinearity compensation (IC-NLC) in long-haul coherent optical transmission systems with a symbol rate of 200 GBaud and beyond. We first evaluate the potential gain of ideal IC-NLC in 4 THz systems by estimating the proportion of self-channel interference (SCI) using the split-step Fourier method (SSFM) based simulation with either lumped amplification or distributed amplification. As the symbol rate increases to 300 GBaud, the SCI proportion exceeds 65%. On the other hand, the non-deterministic polarization mode dispersion (PMD) will impact the effectiveness of IC-NLC, especially for ultra-high symbol rate systems. Therefore, we investigate the power spectral density of the residual nonlinear noise after ideal IC-NLC in the presence of PMD. The results indicate that the gain of ideal digital backpropagation (IDBP) decreases by 3.85 dB in 300 GBaud erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA)-amplified links with a PMD parameter of 0.05 ps/km1/2, and 5.09 dB in distributed Raman amplifier (DRA)-amplified links. Finally, we evaluate the potential gains of practical IC-NLC in C-band wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems by employing the low-pass-filter assisted digital backpropagation (LDBP). As the symbol rate increases from 100 GBaud to 300 GBaud, the gain of 20-step-per-span (20-stps) LDBP increases from 0.53 dB to 0.87 dB for EDFA-amplified links, and from 0.89 dB to 1.30 dB for DRA-amplified links. Our quantitative results show that for 200 GBaud and beyond systems, there is a sizable gain to achieve by compensating for intra-channel nonlinearity even with a large non-deterministic PMD.

Preamble Design for Joint Frame Synchronization, Frequency Offset Estimation, and Channel Estimation in Upstream Burst-mode Detection of Coherent PONs

Coherent optics has demonstrated significant potential as a viable solution for achieving 100 Gb/s and higher speeds in single-wavelength passive optical networks (PON). However, upstream burst-mode coherent detection is a major challenge when adopting coherent optics in access networks. To accelerate digital signal processing (DSP) convergence with a minimal preamble length, we propose a novel burst-mode preamble design based on a constant amplitude zero auto-correlation sequence. This design facilitates comprehensive estimation of linear channel effects in the frequency domain, including polarization state rotation, differential group delay, chromatic dispersion, and polarization-dependent loss, providing overall system response information for channel equalization pre-convergence. Additionally, this preamble utilizes the same training unit to jointly achieve three key DSP functions: frame synchronization, frequency offset estimation, and channel estimation. This integration contributes to a significant reduction in the preamble length. The feasibility of the proposed preamble with a length of 272 symbols and corresponding DSP was experimentally verified in a 15 Gbaud coherent system using dual-polarization 16 quadrature amplitude modulation. The experimental results based on this scheme showed a superior performance of the convergence acceleration.

Dual-Tap Optical-Digital Feedforward Equalization Enabling High-Speed Optical Transmission in IM/DD Systems

Intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IM/DD) transmission is widely adopted for high-speed optical transmission scenarios due to its cost-effectiveness and simplicity. However, as the data rate increases, the fiber chromatic dispersion (CD) would induce a serious power fading effect, and direct detection could generate inter-symbol interference (ISI). Moreover, the ISI becomes more severe with the increase of fiber length, thereby highly restricting the transmission distance of IM/DD systems. This paper proposes a dual-tap optical-digital feedforward equalization (DT-ODFE) scheme, which could effectively compensate for CD-induced power fading while maintaining low cost and simplicity. A theoretical channel response is formulated for IM/DD transmission, incorporating a dual-tap optical equalizer, and the theoretical analysis reveals that for an IM/DD transmission using 1371nm over 10km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), frequency notch is removed from 33.7GHz to 46GHz. Simulation results show that the DT- ODFE achieves an SNR gain of 2.3dB over IM/DD systems with symbol-space feedforward equalizer (FFE) alone. As the fiber length increases to 15 km, DT- ODFE performs well, while FFE, decision-feedback equalizer (DFE) and Volterra nonlinear equalizers (VNLE) all fail to compensate for the power fading and the 7% hard-decision FEC limit is not satisfied. For 200 Gb/s/$λ$ PAM-4 over 15km SSMF, results show that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the proposed DT- ODFE with optimal coefficients satisfies the 7% hard-decision FEC limit, which uncovers the great potential of the DT- ODFE for high-speed IM/DD systems in LR/FR scenarios.

Building a digital twin of EDFA: a grey-box modeling approach

To enable intelligent and self-driving optical networks, high-accuracy physical layer models are required. The dynamic wavelength-dependent gain effects of non-constant-pump erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) remain a crucial problem in terms of modeling, as it determines optical-to-signal noise ratio as well as the magnitude of fiber nonlinearities. Black-box data-driven models have been widely studied, but it requires a large size of data for training and suffers from poor generalizability. In this paper, we derive the gain spectra of EDFAs as a simple univariable linear function, and then based on it we propose a grey-box EDFA gain modeling scheme. Experimental results show that for both automatic gain control (AGC) and automatic power control (APC) EDFAs, our model built with 8 data samples can achieve better performance than the neural network (NN) based model built with 900 data samples, which means the required data size for modeling can be reduced by at least two orders of magnitude. Moreover, in the experiment the proposed model demonstrates superior generalizability to unseen scenarios since it is based on the underlying physics of EDFAs. The results indicate that building a customized digital twin of each EDFA in optical networks become feasible, which is essential especially for next generation multi-band network operations.

Four-dimensional direct detection with Jones space optical full-field recovery

Data centers, the engines of the global Internet, are supported by massive high-speed optical interconnects. In optical fiber communication, the classic direct detection obtains only the intensity of the optical field, while the coherent detection counterpart utilizes both phase and polarization diversities at the expense of beating with a narrow-linewidth and high-stable local oscillator (LO). Herein, we propose and demonstrate a four-dimensional Jones space optical field recovery (4-D JSFR) scheme without LO. The information encoded on the intensity and phase of both polarizations can be captured by the polarization-diversity full-field receiver structure and subsequently extracted through deep neural network-aided field recovery. It achieves similar electrical spectral efficiency as standard intradyne coherent detection. The fully recovered optical field can extend the transmission distance beyond the power fading limitation induced by fiber chromatic dispersion. Furthermore, the LO-free advantage makes 4-D JSFR suitable for monolithic photonic integration, offering a spectrally efficient and cost-effective candidate for large-scale data center applications. Our results could motivate a fundamental paradigm shift in the optical field recovery theory and future optical transceiver design.

Optical Field Recovery in Jones Space

Optical full-field recovery makes it possible to compensate for fiber impairments such as chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in the digital signal processing. For cost-sensitive short-reach optical networks, some advanced single-polarization (SP) optical field recovery schemes are recently proposed to avoid chromatic dispersion-induced power fading effect, and improve the spectral efficiency for larger potential capacity. Polarization division multiplexing (PDM) can further double both the spectral efficiency and the system capacity of these SP carrier-assisted direct detection (DD) schemes. However, the so-called polarization fading phenomenon induced by random polarization rotation is a fundamental obstacle which prevents SP carrier-assisted DD systems from polarization diversity. In this paper, we propose a receiver of Jones-space field recovery (JSFR) to realize polarization diversity with SP carrier-assisted DD schemes in Jones space. Different receiver structures and simplified recovery procedures for JSFR are explored theoretically. The proposed JSFR pushes the SP DD schemes towards PDM without extra optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) penalty. In addition, the JSFR shows good tolerance to PMD since the optical field recovery is conducted before polarization recovery. In the concept-of-proof experiment, we demonstrate 448-Gb/s reception over 80-km single-mode fiber using the proposed JSFR based on 22 couplers. Furthermore, we qualitatively compare the optical field recovery in Jones space and Stokes space from the perspective of the modulation dimension. Qualitatively, we compare the optical field recovery in the Jones space and Stokes space from the perspective of the modulation dimension.
