A Bird's-Eye View on Security Considerations in RFCs

Request for comments (RFCs) are Internet standards, memorandums, and related technical documents about core Internet protocols made via and released by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). In the early 1990s each RFC was required to have a section for security considerations. The present work examines these sections. According to the empirical results, (1) over 90% of the RFCs sampled have discussed security explicitly in these sections, (2) although mandatory security requirements have only seldom-if ever-been imposed. Furthermore, (3) the RFC-to-RFC reference network specific to the security consideration sections is sparse, although a few RFCs and their security consideration sections are heavily referenced. In addition, (4) the volume of references peaked during a period from circa mid-1990s to mid-2010s. Regarding the topics discussed in the sections, (5) these do not represent general security issues, such as spoofing or eavesdropping; rather, the topics mostly reflect distinct security issues specific to distinct protocols. With the exceptions of network security in general, security specifications, and routing, (6) also the longitudinal evolution of the topics is protocol-specific. As the subject matter has not been previously examined, these empirical results fill a gap in the standardization literature.

An Alignment Between the CRA's Essential Requirements and the ATT&CK's Mitigations

The paper presents an alignment evaluation between the mitigations present in the MITRE's ATT&CK framework and the essential cyber security requirements of the recently introduced Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) in the European Union. In overall, the two align well with each other. With respect to the CRA, there are notable gaps only in terms of data minimization, data erasure, and vulnerability coordination. In terms of the ATT&CK framework, gaps are present only in terms of threat intelligence, training, out-of-band communication channels, and residual risks. The evaluation presented contributes to narrowing of a common disparity between law and technical frameworks.

Towards Systematic Specification and Verification of Fairness Requirements: A Position Paper

Decisions suggested by improperly designed software systems might be prone to discriminate against people based on protected characteristics, such as gender and ethnicity. Previous studies attribute such undesired behavior to flaws in algorithmic design or biased data. However, these studies ignore that discrimination is often the result of a lack of well-specified fairness requirements and their verification. The fact that experts' knowledge about fairness is often implicit makes the task of specifying precise and verifiable fairness requirements difficult. In related domains, such as security engineering, knowledge graphs have been proven to be effective in formalizing knowledge to assist requirements specification and verification. To address the lack of formal mechanisms for specifying and verifying fairness requirements, we propose the development of a knowledge graph-based framework for fairness. In this paper, we discuss the challenges, research questions, and a road map towards addressing the research questions.

Tracing Vulnerability Propagation Across Open Source Software Ecosystems

The paper presents a traceability analysis of how over 84 thousand vulnerabilities have propagated across 28 open source software ecosystems. According to the results, the propagation sequences have been complex in general, although GitHub, Debian, and Ubuntu stand out. Furthermore, the associated propagation delays have been lengthy, and these do not correlate well with the number of ecosystems involved in the associated sequences. Nor does the presence or absence of particularly ecosystems in the sequences yield clear, interpretable patterns. With these results, the paper contributes to the overlapping knowledge bases about software ecosystems, traceability, and vulnerabilities.

Exploring the Limits of Model Compression in LLMs: A Knowledge Distillation Study on QA Tasks

Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated outstanding performance across a range of NLP tasks, however, their computational demands hinder their deployment in real-world, resource-constrained environments. This work investigates the extent to which LLMs can be compressed using Knowledge Distillation (KD) while maintaining strong performance on Question Answering (QA) tasks. We evaluate student models distilled from the Pythia and Qwen2.5 families on two QA benchmarks, SQuAD and MLQA, under zero-shot and one-shot prompting conditions. Results show that student models retain over 90% of their teacher models' performance while reducing parameter counts by up to 57.1%. Furthermore, one-shot prompting yields additional performance gains over zero-shot setups for both model families. These findings underscore the trade-off between model efficiency and task performance, demonstrating that KD, combined with minimal prompting, can yield compact yet capable QA systems suitable for resource-constrained applications.

Snaps: Bloated and Outdated?

Snap is an alternative software packaging system developed by Canonical and provided by default in the Ubuntu Linux distribution. Given the heterogeneity of various Linux distributions and their various releases, Snap allows an interoperable delivery of software directly to users. However, concerns and criticism have also been frequently expressed. Regarding this criticism, the paper shows that currently distributed snap packages are indeed on average bloated in terms of their sizes and outdated in terms updating frequencies. With these empirical observations, this short paper contributes to the research domain of software packaging, software packages, and package managers.

The Popularity Hypothesis in Software Security: A Large-Scale Replication with PHP Packages

There has been a long-standing hypothesis that a software's popularity is related to its security or insecurity in both research and popular discourse. There are also a few empirical studies that have examined the hypothesis, either explicitly or implicitly. The present work continues with and contributes to this research with a replication-motivated large-scale analysis of software written in the PHP programming language. Two datasets are used: the first contains nearly four hundred thousand open source software packages written in PHP and the second addresses over six thousand WordPress components. According to the results based on vulnerabilities reported, the hypothesis holds: packages having seen reported vulnerabilities over their release histories are generally more popular than packages for which fewer or no vulnerabilities have been reported. With this replication results, the paper contributes to the efforts to strengthen the empirical knowledge basis in cyber and software security. In addition, the paper makes a contribution to the recent discussion on the terminology about software vulnerabilities and the associated construct validity problems that follow.

Large Language Model in Medical Informatics: Direct Classification and Enhanced Text Representations for Automatic ICD Coding

Addressing the complexity of accurately classifying International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes from medical discharge summaries is challenging due to the intricate nature of medical documentation. This paper explores the use of Large Language Models (LLM), specifically the LLAMA architecture, to enhance ICD code classification through two methodologies: direct application as a classifier and as a generator of enriched text representations within a Multi-Filter Residual Convolutional Neural Network (MultiResCNN) framework. We evaluate these methods by comparing them against state-of-the-art approaches, revealing LLAMA's potential to significantly improve classification outcomes by providing deep contextual insights into medical texts.

Falcon 7b for Software Mention Detection in Scholarly Documents

This paper aims to tackle the challenge posed by the increasing integration of software tools in research across various disciplines by investigating the application of Falcon-7b for the detection and classification of software mentions within scholarly texts. Specifically, the study focuses on solving Subtask I of the Software Mention Detection in Scholarly Publications (SOMD), which entails identifying and categorizing software mentions from academic literature. Through comprehensive experimentation, the paper explores different training strategies, including a dual-classifier approach, adaptive sampling, and weighted loss scaling, to enhance detection accuracy while overcoming the complexities of class imbalance and the nuanced syntax of scholarly writing. The findings highlight the benefits of selective labelling and adaptive sampling in improving the model's performance. However, they also indicate that integrating multiple strategies does not necessarily result in cumulative improvements. This research offers insights into the effective application of large language models for specific tasks such as SOMD, underlining the importance of tailored approaches to address the unique challenges presented by academic text analysis.

Data Trading and Monetization: Challenges and Open Research Directions

Traditional data monetization approaches face challenges related to data protection and logistics. In response, digital data marketplaces have emerged as intermediaries simplifying data transactions. Despite the growing establishment and acceptance of digital data marketplaces, significant challenges hinder efficient data trading. As a result, few companies can derive tangible value from their data, leading to missed opportunities in understanding customers, pricing decisions, and fraud prevention. In this paper, we explore both technical and organizational challenges affecting data monetization. Moreover, we identify areas in need of further research, aiming to expand the boundaries of current knowledge by emphasizing where research is currently limited or lacking.
