On the helicity of radiative electromagnetic fields

A relativistically invariant expression for the magnetic and electric helicities of free electromagnetic field through the currents, which created those field, are derived. It is demonstrated that for radiative fields (e.g. laser pulses) the both helicities are conserved and equal to each other. Moreover the conservation of the helicity means that in radiative electromagnetic fields the electric and magnetic vectors are always orthogonal to each other. Proceeding to the quantum theory, it is shown that the corresponding quantum helicity field operator is equal to the sum of projections of spins of all photons onto their momentums. Finally, as an example, the expressions for the total helicity, number of photons and the total spin momentum of the field of a dipole electromagnetic pulse are obtained and discussed.

On the number and spin of photons in classical electromagnetic field

A relativistically invariant expression for the number of photons in free classical electromagnetic field through the currents, that created the field, is derived based on the formula for the total energy--momentum of the field. It is demonstrated that it corresponds to the classical limit of the photon number operator known from the quantum electrodynamics. An expression for the total spin moment of the classical electromagnetic field is derived and it is shown that it can be interpreted in terms of spin moments of elementary photons. Similar to the total number of photons the classical spin moment is the limit of the quantum operator of the total spin. It is revealed that the total number of photons as well as the total spin moment are related to each other through a second order tensor, which can be expressed through currents that created the field.

Propagation of waves from an arbitrary shaped surface -- a generalization of the Fresnel diffraction integral

Using the method of Laplace transform the field amplitude in the paraxial approximation is found in the two-dimensional free space using initial values of the amplitude specified on an arbitrary shaped monotonic curve. The obtained amplitude depends on one {\it a priori} unknown function, which can be found from a Volterra first kind integral equation. In a special case of field amplitude specified on a concave parabolic curve the exact solution is derived. Both solutions can be used to study the light propagation from arbitrary surfaces including grazing incidence X-ray mirrors. They can find applications in the analysis of coherent imaging problems of X-ray optics, in phase retrieval algorithms as well as in inverse problems in the cases when the initial field amplitude is sought on a curved surface.
