Chaotic inflation on the brane

We consider slow-roll inflation in the context of recently proposed four-dimensional effective gravity induced on the world-volume of a three-brane in five-dimensional Einstein gravity. We find significant modifications of the simplest chaotic inflationary scenario when the five-dimensional Planck scale is below about 10^{17} GeV. We use the comoving curvature perturbation, which remains constant on super-Hubble scales, in order to calculate the spectrum of adiabatic density perturbations generated. Modifications to the Friedmann constraint equation lead to a faster Hubble expansion at high energies and a more strongly damped evolution of the scalar field. This assists slow-roll, enhances the amount of inflation obtained in any given model, and drives the perturbations towards an exactly scale-invariant Harrison-Zel'dovich spectrum. In chaotic inflation driven by a massive scalar field we show that inflation can occur at field values far below the four-dimensional Planck scale, though above the five-dimensional fundamental scale.

Inflationary cosmology and thermodynamics

We present a simple and thermodynamically consistent cosmology with a phenomenological model of quantum creation of radiation due to vacuum decay. Thermodynamics and Einstein's equations lead to an equation in which $H$ is determined by the particle number $N$. The model is completed by specifying the particle creation rate $Γ=\dot{N}/N$, which leads to a second-order evolution equation for $H$. We propose a simple $Γ$ that is naturally defined and that conforms to the thermodynamical conditions: (a) the entropy production rate starts at a maximum; (b) the initial vacuum (for radiation) is a non-singular regular vacuum; and (c) the creation rate is initially higher than the expansion rate $H$, but then falls below $H$. The evolution equation for $H$ then has a remarkably simple exact solution, in which a non-adiabatic inflationary era exits smoothly to the radiation era, without a reheating transition. For this solution, we give exact expressions for the cosmic scale factor, energy density of radiation and vacuum, temperature, entropy and super-horizon scalar perturbations.

Cosmological solutions with nonlinear bulk viscosity

A recently proposed nonlinear transport equation is used to model bulk viscous cosmologies that may be far from equilibrium, as happens during viscous fluid inflation or during reheating. The asymptotic stability of the de Sitter and Friedmann solutions is investigated. The former is stable for bulk viscosity index $q<1$ and the latter for $q>1$. New solutions are obtained in the weakly nonlinear regime for $q=1$. These solutions are singular and some of them represent a late-time inflationary era.

Integrability of irrotational silent cosmological models

We revisit the issue of integrability conditions for the irrotational silent cosmological models. We formulate the problem both in 1+3 covariant and 1+3 orthonormal frame notation, and show there exists a series of constraint equations that need to be satisfied. These conditions hold identically for FLRW-linearised silent models, but not in the general exact non-linear case. Thus there is a linearisation instability, and it is highly unlikely that there is a large class of silent models. We conjecture that there are no spatially inhomogeneous solutions with Weyl curvature of Petrov type I, and indicate further issues that await clarification.
