WKB analysis of generalized derivative nonlinear Schrodinger equations without hyperbolicity

We consider the semi-classical limit of nonlinear Schrodinger equations in the presence of both a polynomial nonlinearity and thederivative in space of a polynomial nonlinearity. By working in a class of analytic initial data, we do not have to assume any hyperbolicstructure on the (limiting) phase/amplitude system. The solution, its approximation, and the error estimates are considered in time dependent analyticregularity.

Replicator-mutator equations with quadratic fitness

This work completes our previous analysis on models arising in evolutionary genetics. We consider the so-called replicator-mutator equation, when the fitness is quadratic. This equation is a heat equation with a harmonic potential, plus a specific nonlocal term. We give an explicit formula for the solution, thanks to which we prove that when the fitness is non-positive (harmonic potential), solutions converge to a universal stationary Gaussian for large time, whereas when the fitness is non-negative (inverted harmonic potential), solutions always become extinct in finite time.

On Fourier time-splitting methods for nonlinear Schrodinger equations in the semi-classical limit II. Analytic regularity

We consider the time discretization based on Lie-Trotter splitting, for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, in the semi-classical limit, with initial data under the form of WKB states. We show that both the exact and the numerical solutions keep a WKB structure, on a time interval independent of the Planck constant. We prove error estimates, which show that the quadratic observables can be computed with a time step independent of the Planck constant. The functional framework is based on time-dependent analytic spaces, in order to overcome a previously encountered loss of regularity phenomenon.

Monokinetic solutions to a singular Vlasov equation from a semiclassical perspective

Solutions to a singular one-dimensional Vlasov equation are obtained as the semiclassical limit of the Wigner transform associated to a logarithmic Schrodinger equation. Two frameworks are considered, regarding in particular the initial position density: Gaussian initial density, or smooth initial density away from vacuum. For Gaussian initial densities, the analysis also yields global solutions to the isothermal Euler system that do not enter the frame of regular solutions to hyperbolic systems by P. D. Lax.

Norm-inflation for periodic NLS equations in negative Sobolev spaces

In this paper we consider Schr{ö}dinger equations with nonlinearities of odd order 2$σ$ + 1 on T^d. We prove that for $σ$d$\ge$2, they are strongly illposed in the Sobolev space H^s for any s \textless{} 0, exhibiting norm-inflation with infinite loss of regularity. In the case of the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation and its renormalized version we prove such a result for H^s with s \textless{} --2/3.

On semi-classical limit of nonlinear quantum scattering

We consider the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation with a short-range external potential, in a semi-classical scaling. We show that for fixed Planck constant, a com-plete scattering theory is available, showing that both the potential and the nonlinearity are asymptotically negligible for large time. Then, for data under the form of coherent state, we show that a scattering theory is also available for the approximate envelope of the propagated coherent state, which is given by a nonlinear equation. In the semi-classical limit, these two scattering operators can be compared in terms of classical scattering the-ory, thanks to a uniform in time error estimate. Finally, we infer a large time decoupling phenomenon in the case of finitely many initial coherent states.

Scattering for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a general one-dimensional confinement

We consider the defocusing nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation in several space dimensions, in the presence of an external potential depending on only one space vari-able. This potential is bounded from below, and may grow arbitrarily fast at infinity. We prove existence and uniqueness in the associated Cauchy problem, in a suitable functional framework, as well as the existence of wave operators when the power of the nonlinearity is sufficiently large. Asymptotic completeness then stems from at least two approaches, which are briefly recalled.

Sharp weights in the Cauchy problem for nonlinear Schrodinger equations with potential

We review different properties related to the Cauchy problem for the (nonlinear) Schrodinger equation with a smooth potential. For energy-subcritical nonlinearities and at most quadratic potentials, we investigate the necessary decay in space in order for the Cauchy problem to be locally (and globally) well-posed. The characterization of the minimal decay is different in the case of super-quadratic potentials.

Scattering for nonlinear Schrodinger equation under partial harmonic confinement

We consider the nonlinear Schrodinger equation under a partial quadratic confinement. We show that the global dispersion corresponding to the direction(s) with no potential is enough to prove global in time Strichartz estimates, from which we infer the existence of wave operators thanks to suitable vector-fields. Conversely, given an initial Cauchy datum, the solution is global in time and asymptotically free, provided that confinement affects one spatial direction only. This stems from anisotropic Morawetz estimates, involving a marginal of the position density.

Explicit solutions for replicator-mutator equations: extinction vs. acceleration

We consider a class of nonlocal reaction-diffusion problems, referred to as replicator-mutator equations in evolutionary genetics. By using explicit changes of unknown function, we show that they are equivalent to the heat equation and, therefore, compute their solution explicitly. Based on this, we then prove that, in the case of beneficial mutations in asexual populations, solutions dramatically depend on the tails of the initial data: they can be global, become extinct in finite time or, even, be defined for no positive time. In the former case, we prove that solutions are accelerating, and in many cases converge for large time to some universal Gaussian profile. This sheds light on the biological relevance of such models.

Finite time extinction for nonlinear Schrodinger equation in 1D and 2D

We consider a nonlinear Schrodinger equation with power nonlinearity, either on a compact manifold without boundary, or on the whole space in the presence of harmonic confinement, in space dimension one and two. Up to introducing an extra superlinear damping to prevent finite time blow up, we show that the presence of a sublinear damping always leads to finite time extinction of the solution in 1D, and that the same phenomenon is present in the case of small mass initial data in 2D.

On Fourier time-splitting methods for nonlinear Schrodinger equations in the semi-classical limit

We prove an error estimate for a Lie-Trotter splitting operator associated to the Schrodinger-Poisson equation in the semiclassical regime, when the WKB approximation is valid. In finite time, and so long as the solution to a compressible Euler-Poisson equation is smooth, the error between the numerical solution and the exact solution is controlled in Sobolev spaces, in a suitable phase/amplitude representation. As a corollary, we infer the numerical convergence of the quadratic observables with a time step independent of the Planck constant. A similar result is established for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation in the weakly nonlinear regime.

On nonlinear Schrodinger type equations with nonlinear damping

We consider equations of nonlinear Schrodinger type augmented by nonlinear damping terms. We show that nonlinear damping prevents finite time blow-up in several situations, which we describe. We also prove that the presence of a quadratic confinement in all spatial directions drives the solution of our model to zero for large time. In the case without external potential we prove that the solution may not go to zero for large time due to (non-trivial) scattering.

Large time behavior in nonlinear Schrodinger equation with time dependent potential

We consider the large time behavior of solutions to defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation in the presence of a time dependent external potential. The main assumption on the potential is that it grows at most quadratically in space, uniformly with respect to the time variable. We show a general exponential control of first order derivatives and momenta, which yields a double exponential bound for higher Sobolev norms and momenta. On the other hand, we show that if the potential is an isotropic harmonic potential with a time dependent frequency which decays sufficiently fast, then Sobolev norms are bounded, and momenta grow at most polynomially in time, because the potential becomes negligible for large time: there is scattering, even though the potential is unbounded in space for fixed time.

A nonlinear Landau-Zener formula

We consider a system of two coupled ordinary differential equations which appears as an envelope equation in Bose-Einstein Condensation. This system can be viewed as a nonlinear extension of the celebrated model introduced by Landau and Zener. We show how the nonlinear system may appear from different physical models. We focus our attention on the large time behavior of the solution. We show the existence of a nonlinear scattering operator, which is reminiscent of long range scattering for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, and which can be compared with its linear counterpart.

An asymptotic preserving scheme based on a new formulation for NLS in the semiclassical limit

We consider the semiclassical limit for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. We introduce a phase/amplitude representation given by a system similar to the hydrodynamical formulation, whose novelty consists in including some asymptotically vanishing viscosity. We prove that the system is always locally well-posed in a class of Sobolev spaces, and globally well-posed for a fixed positive Planck constant in the one-dimensional case. We propose a second order numerical scheme which is asymptotic preserving. Before singularities appear in the limiting Euler equation, we recover the quadratic physical observables as well as the wave function with mesh size and time step independent of the Planck constant. This approach is also well suited to the linear Schrodinger equation.

On the Cauchy problem for Hartree equation in the Wiener algebra

We consider the mass-subcritical Hartree equation with a homogeneous kernel, in the space of square integrable functions whose Fourier transform is integrable. We prove a global well-posedness result in this space. On the other hand, we show that the Cauchy problem is not even locally well-posed if we simply work in the space of functions whose Fourier transform is integrable. Similar results are proven when the kernel is not homogeneous, and is such that its Fourier transform belongs to some Lebesgue space.
