The vanishing cycles of curves in toric surfaces II

We resume the study initiated in \cite{CL}. For a generic curve $C$ in an ample linear system $\vert \mathcal{L} \vert$ on a toric surface $X$, a vanishing cycle of $C$ is an isotopy class of simple closed curve that can be contracted to a point along a degeneration of $C$ to a nodal curve in $\vert \mathcal{L} \vert$. The obstructions that prevent a simple closed curve in $C$ from being a vanishing cycle are encoded by the adjoint line bundle $K_X \otimes \mathcal{L}$. In this paper, we consider the linear systems carrying the two simplest types of obstruction. Geometrically, these obstructions manifest on $C$ respectively as an hyperelliptic involution and as a Spin structure. In both cases, we determine all the vanishing cycles by investigating the associated monodromy maps, whose target space is the mapping class group $MCG(C)$. We show that the image of the monodromy is the subgroup of $MCG(C)$ preserving respectively the hyperelliptic involution and the Spin structure. In particular, we provide an explicit finite set of generators for the Spin mapping class group. The results obtained here support the Conjecture $1$ in \cite{CL} aiming to describe all the vanishing cycles for any pair $(X, \mathcal{L})$.

The vanishing cycles of curves in toric surfaces I

This article is the first in a series of two in which we study the vanishing cycles of curves in toric surfaces. We give a list of possible obstructions to contract vanishing cycles within a given complete linear system. Using tropical means, we show that any non-separating simple closed curve is a vanishing cycle whenever none of the listed obstructions appears.

Real bundle automorphisms, Cauchy Riemann operators and orientability of moduli spaces

This paper consists in a very brief English summary of the results appearing in French in two previous articles. We omit the proofs and focus on explaining our approach and theorems. This paper is not intended to be published. Questions are welcome. In our work, we considered a complex vector bundle $N$ equipped with a real structure $c_N$ over a real curve of arbitrary genus. We computed the sign of the action of an automorphism of $(N,c_N)$ on the orientations of the determinant line bundle over the space of Cauchy-Riemann operators on $(N,c_N)$. We first considered the automorphisms lifting the identity on the curve (in the first article). In this case, we obtained the sign as a product of two terms. The first one computes the signature of the permutations induced by the automorphisms acting in the $Pin^\pm$ structures on the real part of $(N,c_N)$. The second one comes from the action of the automorphisms of $(N,c_N)$ on the bordism classes of real $Spin$ structures on the curve. We then studied the general case in the second article. As an application of these results, we computed the first Stiefel-Whitney class of the moduli space of real pseudoholomorphic curves in many cases.

Déterminant des opérateurs de Cauchy-Riemann réels et application à l'orientabilité d'espaces de modules de courbes réelles

The paper is devoted to the study of the orientability of the moduli spaces of real pseudoholomorphic curves in real symplectic manifolds. We begin by extending the results we obtained in \cite{article1}. Namely, we consider a complex vector bundle $(N,c_N)$ equipped with a real structure over a real curve $(Σ_g,c_Σ)$ of genus $g \in \NN$, and we give a description of the action of an automorphism of $(N,c_N)$ on the orientations of the determinant bundle over the space of all Cauchy-Riemann operators on $(N,c_N)$. In the second part, we use the previous decription to compute the first Stiefel-Whitney class of the moduli space of real pseudoholomorphic curves in many cases. We show for example that the real pseudoholomorphic curves with non-empty real part in the complex projective space of dimension three form an orientable moduli space for a generic almost complex structure.

Automorphismes réels d'un fibré et opérateurs de Cauchy-Riemann

Let $(N,c_N)$ be a complex vector bundle equipped with a real structure over a real curve $(Σ,c_Σ)$ of genus $g \geq 0$. We compute the sign of the action of the automorphisms of $(N,c_N)$ lifting the identity of $Σ$ on the orientations of the determinant line bundle over the space of real Cauchy-Riemann operators on $(N,c_N)$. This sign can be obtained as the product of two terms. The first one computes the signature of the permutations induced by the automorphisms acting on the $Pin^\pm$ structures of the real part of $(N,c_N)$. The second one comes from the action of the automorphisms of $(N,c_N)$ on the bordism classes of real Spin structures on $(Σ,c_Σ)$.
