Classical transport in a maximally chaotic chain

A model for a lattice of coupled cat maps has been recently introduced. This new and specific choice of the coupling makes the description especially easy and nontrivial quantities as Lyapunov exponents determined exactly. We studied the ergodic property of the dynamics along such a chain for a local perturbation. While the perturbation spreads across a front growing ballistically, the position and momentum profiles show large fluctuations due to chaos leading to diffusive transport in the phase space. It provides an example where the diffusion can be directly inferred from the microscopic chaos.

Critical properties of the Anderson transition in random graphs: two-parameter scaling theory, Kosterlitz-Thouless type flow and many-body localization

The Anderson transition in random graphs has raised great interest, partly because of its analogy with the many-body localization (MBL) transition. Unlike the latter, many results for random graphs are now well established, in particular the existence and precise value of a critical disorder separating a localized from an ergodic delocalized phase. However, the renormalization group flow and the nature of the transition are not well understood. In turn, recent works on the MBL transition have made the remarkable prediction that the flow is of Kosterlitz-Thouless type. Here we show that the Anderson transition on graphs displays the same type of flow. Our work attests to the importance of rare branches along which wave functions have a much larger localization length $ξ_\parallel$ than the one in the transverse direction, $ξ_\perp$. Importantly, these two lengths have different critical behaviors: $ξ_\parallel$ diverges with a critical exponent $ν_\parallel=1$, while $ξ_\perp$ reaches a finite universal value ${ξ_\perp^c}$ at the transition point $W_c$. Indeed, $ξ_\perp^{-1} \approx {ξ_\perp^c}^{-1} + ξ^{-1}$, with $ξ\sim (W-W_c)^{-ν_\perp}$ associated with a new critical exponent $ν_\perp = 1/2$, where $\exp( ξ)$ controls finite-size effects. The delocalized phase inherits the strongly non-ergodic properties of the critical regime at short scales, but is ergodic at large scales, with a unique critical exponent $ν=1/2$. This shows a very strong analogy with the MBL transition: the behavior of $ξ_\perp$ is identical to that recently predicted for the typical localization length of MBL in a phenomenological renormalization group flow. We demonstrate these important properties for a smallworld complex network model and show the universality of our results by considering different network parameters and different key observables of Anderson localization.

Analytical results for the quantum non-Markovianity of spin ensembles undergoing pure dephasing dynamics

We study analytically the non-Markovianity of a spin ensemble, with arbitrary number of spins and spin quantum number, undergoing a pure dephasing dynamics. The system is considered as a part of a larger spin ensemble of any geometry with pairwise interactions. We derive exact formulas for the reduced dynamics of the system and for its non-Markovianity as assessed by the witness of Lorenzo \emph{et al.} [Phys.~Rev.~A \textbf{88}, 020102(R) (2013)]. The non-Markovianity is further investigated in the thermodynamic limit when the environment's size goes to infinity. In this limit and for finite-size systems, we find that the Markovian's character of the system's dynamics crucially depends on the range of the interactions. We also show that, when the system and its environment are initially in a separable state, the appearance of non-Markovianity is independent of the entanglement generation between the system and its environment.

Scattering theory of walking droplets in the presence of obstacles

We aim to describe a droplet bouncing on a vibrating bath using a simple and highly versatile model inspired from quantum mechanics. Close to the Faraday instability, a long-lived surface wave is created at each bounce, which serves as a pilot wave for the droplet. This leads to so called walking droplets or walkers. Since the seminal experiment by {\it Couder et al} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 97}, 154101 (2006)] there have been many attempts to accurately reproduce the experimental results. We propose to describe the trajectories of a walker using a Green function approach. The Green function is related to the Helmholtz equation with Neumann boundary conditions on the obstacle(s) and outgoing boundary conditions at infinity. For a single-slit geometry our model is exactly solvable and reproduces some general features observed experimentally. It stands for a promising candidate to account for the presence of arbitrary boundaries in the walker's dynamics.

Scaling theory of the Anderson transition in random graphs: ergodicity and universality

We study the Anderson transition on a generic model of random graphs with a tunable branching parameter $1<K\le 2$, through large scale numerical simulations and finite-size scaling analysis. We find that a single transition separates a localized phase from an unusual delocalized phase which is ergodic at large scales but strongly non-ergodic at smaller scales. In the critical regime, multifractal wavefunctions are located on few branches of the graph. Different scaling laws apply on both sides of the transition: a scaling with the linear size of the system on the localized side, and an unusual volumic scaling on the delocalized side. The critical scalings and exponents are independent of the branching parameter, which strongly supports the universality of our results.

Spectral statistics of chaotic many-body systems

We derive a trace formula that expresses the level density of chaotic many-body systems as a smooth term plus a sum over contributions associated to solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger (or Gross-Pitaevski) equation. Our formula applies to bosonic systems with discretised positions, such as the Bose-Hubbard model, in the semiclassical limit as well as in the limit where the number of particles is taken to infinity. We use the trace formula to investigate the spectral statistics of these systems, by studying interference between solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We show that in the limits taken the statistics of fully chaotic many-particle systems becomes universal and agrees with predictions from the Wigner-Dyson ensembles of random matrix theory. The conditions for Wigner-Dyson statistics involve a gap in the spectrum of the Frobenius-Perron operator, leaving the possibility of different statistics for systems with weaker chaotic properties.

Fidelity for kicked atoms with gravity near a quantum resonance

Kicked atoms under a constant Stark or gravity field are investigated for experimental setups with cold and ultra cold atoms. The parametric stability of the quantum dynamics is studied using the fidelity. In the case of a quantum resonance, it is shown that the behavior of the fidelity depends on arithmetic properties of the gravity parameter. Close to a quantum resonance, the long time asymptotics of the fidelity is studied by means of a {\em pseudo-classical} approximation first introduced by Fishman {\em et al.} [J. Stat. Phys. {\bf 110}, 911 (2003)]. The long-time decay of fidelity arises from the tunneling out of pseudo-classical stable islands, and a simple ansatz is proposed which satisfactorily reproduces the main features observed in numerical simulations.
