Cross-correlation Imaging for Waveguide Characterization

Confined geometries, such as optical waveguides, support a discrete set of eigen-modes. In multimoded structures, depending on the boundary conditions, superposition states can propagate. Characterization of these states is a fundamental problem important in waveguide design and testing, especially for optical applications. In this work, I have developed a novel interferometric method that provides complete characterization of optical waveguide modes and their superposition states. The basic idea of the method is to study the interference of the beam radiated from an optical waveguide with an external reference beam, and detect different waveguide modes in the time-domain by changing the relative optical paths of the two beams. In particular, this method, called cross-correlation or C$^2$-imaging, provides the relative amplitudes of the modes and their group delays. For every mode, one can determine the dispersion, intensity and phase distributions, and also local polarization properties. As a part of this work, I have developed the mathematical formalism of C$^2$-imaging and built an experimental setup implementing the idea. I have carried out an extensive program of experiments, confirming the ability of the method to completely characterize waveguide properties.

Resonant Bend Loss in Leakage Channel Fibers

Leakage channel fibers, designed to suppress higher-order modes, demonstrate resonant power loss at certain critical radii of curvature. Outside the resonance, the power recovers to the levels offset by the usual mechanism of bend-induced loss. Using C$^2$-imaging, we experimentally characterize this anomaly and identify the corresponding physical mechanism as the radiative decay of the fundamental mode mediated by the resonant coupling to a cladding mode.

Quench dynamics as a probe of quantum criticality

Quantum critical points of many-body systems can be characterized by studying response of the ground-state wave function to the change of the external parameter, encoded in the ground-state fidelity susceptibility. This quantity characterizes the quench dynamics induced by sudden change of the parameter. In this framework, I analyze scaling relations concerning the probability of excitation and the excitation energy, with the quench amplitude of this parameter. These results are illustrated in the case of one-dimensional sine-Gordon model.

Adiabatic nonlinear probes of one-dimensional Bose gases

We discuss two complementary problems: adiabatic loading of one-dimensional bosons into an optical lattice and merging two one-dimensional Bose systems. Both problems can be mapped to the sine-Gordon model. This mapping allows us to find power-law scalings for the number of excitations with the ramping rate in the regime where the conventional linear response approach fails. We show that the exponent of this power law is sensitive to the interaction strength. In particular, the response is larger, or less adiabatic, for strongly (weakly) interacting bosons for the loading (merging) problem. Our results illustrate that in general the nonlinear response to slow relevant perturbations can be a powerful tool for characterizing properties of interacting systems.

Excitation of the dissipationless Higgs mode in a fermionic condensate

The amplitude mode of a fermionic superfluid, analogous to the Higgs Boson, becomes undamped in the strong coupling regime when its frequency is pushed inside the BCS energy gap. We argue that this is the case in cold gases due to the energy dispersion and nonlocality of the pairing interaction, and propose to use the Feshbach resonance regime for parametric excitation of this mode. The results presented for the BCS pairing dynamics indicate that even weak dispersion suppresses dephasing and gives rise to persistent oscillations. The frequency of oscillations extracted from our simulation of the BCS dynamics agrees with the prediction of the many-body theory.

Coexistence of superfluid and Mott phases of lattice bosons

Recent experiments on strongly-interacting bosons in optical lattices have revealed the co-existence of spatially-separated Mott-insulating and number-fluctuating phases. The description of this inhomogeneous situation is the topic of this Letter. We establish that the number-fluctuating phase forms a superfluid trapped between the Mott-insulating regions and derive the associated collective mode structure. We discuss the interlayer's crossover between two- and three-dimensional behavior as a function of the lattice parameters and estimate the critical temperatures for the transition of the superfluid phase to a normal phase.

Synchronization in the BCS Pairing Dynamics as a Critical Phenomenon

Fermi gas with time-dependent pairing interaction hosts several different dynamical states. Coupling between the collective BCS pairing mode and individual Cooper pair states can make the latter either synchronize or dephase. We describe transition from phase-locked undamped oscillations to Landau-damped dephased oscillations in the collisionless, dissipationless regime as a function of coupling strength. In the dephased regime, we find a second transition at which the long-time asymptotic pairing amplitude vanishes. Using a combination of numerical and analytical methods we establish a continuous (type II) character of both transitions.

Dynamical Selection in Emergent Fermionic Pairing

We consider evolution of a Fermi gas in the presence of a time-dependent BCS interaction. The pairing amplitude in the emergent BCS state is found to be an oscillatory function of time with predictable characteristics. The interplay of linear instability of the unpaired state and nonlinear interactions selects periodic soliton trains of a specific form, described by the Jacobi elliptic function dn. While the parameters of the soliton train, such as the period, amplitude, and time lag, fluctuate among different realizations, the elliptic function form remains robust. The parameter variation is accounted for by the fluctuations of particle distribution in the initial unpaired state.

Dynamical projection of atoms to Feshbach molecules at strong coupling

The dynamical atom/molecule projection, recently used to probe fermion pairing, is fast compared to collective fermion times, but slow on the Feshbach resonance width scale. Theory of detuning-induced dynamics of molecules coupled to resonantly associating atom pairs, employing a time-dependent many-body Green's function approach, is presented. An exact solution is found, predicting a 1/3 power law for molecule production efficiency at fast sweep. The results for $s$- and p-wave resonances are obtained and compared. The predicted production efficiency agrees with experimental observations for both condensed and incoherent molecules away from saturation.

Atom-molecule coexistence and collective dynamics near a Feshbach resonance of cold fermions

Degenerate Fermi gas interacting with molecules near Feshbach resonance is unstable with respect to formation of a mixed state in which atoms and molecules coexist as a coherent superposition. Theory of this state is developed using a mapping to the Dicke model, treating molecular field in the single mode approximation. The results are accurate in the strong coupling regime relevant for current experimental efforts. The exact solution of the Dicke model is exploited to study stability, phase diagram, and nonadiabatic dynamics of molecular field in the mixed state.

Dissipative Dynamics of a Josephson Junction In the Bose-Gases

The dissipative dynamics of a Josephson junction in the Bose-gases is considered within the framework of the model of a tunneling Hamiltonian. The effective action which describes the dynamics of the phase difference across the junction is derived using functional integration method. The dynamic equation obtained for the phase difference across the junction is analyzed for the finite temperatures in the low frequency limit involving the radiation terms. The asymmetric case of the Bose-gases with the different order parameters is calculated as well.

Boundary of two mixed Bose-Einstein condensates

The boundary of two mixed Bose-Einstein condensates interacting repulsively was considered in the case of spatial separation at zero temperature. Analytical expressions for density distribution of condensates were obtained by solving two coupled nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equations in cases corresponding weak and strong separation. These expressions allow to consider excitation spectrum of a particle confined in the vicinity of the boundary as well as surface waves associated with surface tension.
