New Perspectives for Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling

In 1984, Bychkov and Rashba introduced a simple form of spin-orbit coupling to explain certain peculiarities in the electron spin resonance of two-dimensional semiconductors. Over the past thirty years, similar ideas have been leading to a vast number of predictions, discoveries, and innovative concepts far beyond semiconductors. The past decade has been particularly creative with the realizations of means to manipulate spin orientation by moving electrons in space, controlling electron trajectories using spin as a steering wheel, and with the discovery of new topological classes of materials. These developments reinvigorated the interest of physicists and materials scientists in the development of inversion asymmetric structures ranging from layered graphene-like materials to cold atoms. This review presents the most remarkable recent and ongoing realizations of Rashba physics in condensed matter and beyond.

Long distance transport of magnon spin information in a magnetic insulator at room temperature

The transport of spin information has been studied in various materials, such as metals, semiconductors and graphene. In these materials, spin is transported by diffusion of conduction electrons. Here we study the diffusion and relaxation of spin in a magnetic insulator, where the large bandgap prohibits the motion of electrons. Spin can still be transported, however, through the diffusion of non-equilibrium magnons, the quanta of spin wave excitations in magnetically ordered materials. Here we show experimentally that these magnons can be excited and detected fully electrically in linear response, and can transport spin angular momentum through the magnetic insulator yttrium iron garnet (YIG) over distances as large as 40 micrometer. We identify two transport regimes: the diffusion limited regime for distances shorter than the magnon relaxation length, and the relaxation limited regime for larger distances. With a model similar to the diffusion-relaxation model for electron spin transport in (semi)conducting materials, we extract the magnon relaxation length lambda = 9.4 micrometer in a 200 nm thin YIG film at room temperature.

Spintronics and Magnon Bose-Einstein Condensation

Spintronics is the science and technology of electric control over spin currents in solid-state-based devices. Recent advances have demonstrated a coupling between electronic spin currents in non-magnetic metals and magnons in magnetic insulators. The coupling is due to spin transfer and spin pumping at interfaces between the normal metals and magnetic insulators. In this Chapter, we review these developments and the prospects they raise for electric control of quasi-equilibrium magnon Bose-Einstein condensates and spin superfluidity.

Hydrodynamic modes of partially condensed Bose mixtures

We generalize the Landau-Khalatnikov hydrodynamic theory for superfluid helium to two-component (binary) Bose mixtures at arbitrary temperatures. In particular, we include the spin-drag terms that correspond to viscous coupling between the clouds. Therefore, our theory not only describes the usual collective modes of the individual components, e.g., first and second sound, but also results in new collective modes, where both constituents participate. We study these modes in detail and present their dispersions using thermodynamic quantities obtained within the Popov approximation.

Spin-heat relaxation and thermo-spin diffusion in atomic Bose and Fermi gases

We study spin-dependent heat transport in quantum gases, focusing on transport phenomena related to pure spin currents and spin-dependent temperatures. Using the Boltzmann equation, we compute the coupled spin and heat transport coefficients as a function of temperature and interaction strength for energy dependent $s$-wave scattering. We address the issue of whether spin-dependent temperatures can be sustained on a time and length scale relevant for experiments by computing the spin-heat relaxation time and diffusion length. We find that the time scale for spin-heat relaxation time diverges at low temperatures for both bosons and fermions, indicating that the concept of spin-heat accumulation is well defined for degenerate gases. For bosons, we find power-law behavior on approach to Bose condensation above the critical temperature, as expected from the theory of dynamical critical phenomena.

Effects of dissipation on the superfluid-Mott-insulator transition of photons

We investigate the superfluid-Mott-insulator transition of a two-dimensional photon gas in a dye-filled optical microcavity and in the presence of a periodic potential. We show that in the random-phase approximation the effects of the dye molecules, which generally lead to dissipation in the photonic system, can be captured by two dimensionless parameters that only depend on dye-specific properties. Within the mean-field approximation, we demonstrate that one of these parameters decreases the size of the Mott lobes in the phase diagram. By considering also Gaussian fluctuations, we show that the coupling with the dye molecules results in a finite lifetime of the quasiparticle and quasihole excitations in the Mott lobes. Moreover, we show that there are number fluctuations in the Mott lobes even at zero temperature and therefore that the true Mott-insulating state never exists if the interactions with the dye are included.

Phase diffusion in a Bose-Einstein condensate of light

We study phase diffusion in a Bose-Einstein condensate of light in a dye-filled optical microcavity, i.e., the spreading of the probability distribution for the condensate phase. To observe this phenomenon, we propose an interference experiment between the condensed photons and an external laser. We determine the average interference patterns, considering quantum and thermal fluctuations as well as dissipative effects due to the dye. Moreover, we show that a representative outcome of individual measurements can be obtained from a stochastic equation for the global phase of the condensate.

Interaction Effects on Number Fluctuations in a Bose-Einstein Condensate of Light

We investigate the effect of interactions on condensate-number fluctuations in Bose-Einstein condensates. For a contact interaction we variationally obtain the equilibrium probability distribution for the number of particles in the condensate. To facilitate comparison with experiment, we also calculate the zero-time delay autocorrelation function $g^{(2)}(0)$ for different strengths of the interaction. Finally, we focus on the case of a condensate of photons and discuss possible mechanisms for the interaction.

Phase fluctuations and first-order correlation functions of dissipative Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate the finite lifetime effects on first-order correlation functions of dissipative Bose-Einstein condensates. By taking into account the phase fluctuations up to all orders, we show that the finite lifetime effects are neglible for the spatial first-order correlation functions, but have an important effect on the temporal correlations. As an application, we calculate the one-particle density matrix of a quasi-condensate of photons. Finally, we also consider the photons in the normal state and we demonstrate that the finite lifetime effects decrease both the spatial and temporal first-order correlation functions.

Quantum rotor model for a Bose-Einstein condensate of dipolar molecules

We show that a Bose-Einstein condensate of heteronuclear molecules in the regime of small and static electric fields is described by a quantum rotor model for the macroscopic electric dipole moment of the molecular gas cloud. We solve this model exactly and find the symmetric, i.e., rotationally invariant, and dipolar phases expected from the single-molecule problem, but also an axial and planar nematic phase due to many-body effects. Investigation of the wavefunction of the macroscopic dipole moment also reveals squeezing of the probability distribution for the angular momentum of the molecules.

Quasiparticle Berry curvature and Chern numbers in spin-orbit coupled bosonic Mott insulators

We study the ground-state topology and quasiparticle properties in bosonic Mott insulators with two- dimensional spin-orbit couplings in cold atomic optical lattices. We show that the many-body Chern and spin-Chern number can be expressed as an integral of the quasihole Berry curvatures over the Brillouin zone. Using a strong-coupling perturbation theory, for an experimentally feasible spin-orbit coupling, we compute the Berry curvature and the spin Chern number and find that these quantities can be generated purely by interactions. We also compute the quasiparticle dispersions, spectral weights, and the quasimomentum space distribution of particle and spin density, which can be accessed in cold-atom experiments and used to deduce the Berry curvature and Chern numbers.

Phenomenology of current-skyrmion interactions in thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

We study skyrmions in magnetic thin films with structural inversion asymmetry perpendicular to the film plane. We determine the magnetization texture of a single skyrmion and its dependence on the strength of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction relative to the magnetostatic energy. Furthermore, we construct a phenomenological model that describes the interaction between the motion of skyrmions and electric currents to lowest order in spin-orbit coupling. We estimate the experimental verifiable velocities for current-driven motion of skyrmion textures based on available results obtained from domain walls dynamics.

Interaction effects on dynamic correlations in non-condensed Bose gases

We consider dynamic, i.e., frequency-dependent, correlations in non-condensed ultracold atomic Bose gases. In particular, we consider the single-particle correlation function and its power spectrum. We compute this power spectrum for a one-component Bose gas, and show how it depends on the interatomic interactions that lead to a finite single-particle relaxation time. As another example, we consider the power spectrum of spin-current fluctuations for a two-component Bose gas and show how it is determined by the spin-transport relaxation time.

Magnetization relaxation and geometric forces in a Bose ferromagnet

We construct the hydrodynamic theory for spin 1/2 Bose gases at arbitrary temperatures. This theory describes the coupling between the magnetization, and the normal and superfluid components of the gas. In particular, our theory contains the geometric forces on the particles that arise from their spin's adiabatic following of the magnetization texture. The phenomenological parameters of the hydrodynamic theory are calculated in the Bogoliubov approximation and using the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation-time approximation. We consider the topological Hall effect due to the presence of a skyrmion, and show that this effect manifests itself in the collective modes of the system. The dissipative coupling between the magnetization and the normal component is shown to give rise to magnetization relaxation that is fourth order in spatial gradients of the magnetization direction.

Schwinger-Keldysh theory for Bose-Einstein condensation of photons in a dye-filled optical microcavity

We consider Bose-Einstein condensation of photons in an optical cavity filled with dye molecules that are excited by laser light. By using the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism we derive a Langevin field equation that describes the dynamics of the photon gas, and in particular its equilibrium properties and relaxation towards equilibrium. Furthermore we show that the finite lifetime effects of the photons are captured in a single dimensionless damping parameter, that depends on the power of the external laser pumping the dye. Finally, as applications of our theory we determine spectral functions and collective modes of the photon gas in both the normal and the Bose-Einstein condensed phase.

Unified Boltzmann-transport theory for the drag resistivity close to a second-order phase transition

We present a unified Boltzmann-transport theory for the drag resistivity in two-component systems close to a second-order phase transition. We find general expressions for the drag resistivity in two and three spatial dimensions, for arbitrary population and mass imbalance, for particle- and hole-like bands, and show how to incorporate, at the Gaussian level, the effect of fluctuations close to a phase transition. We find that the proximity to the phase transition enhances the drag resistivity upon approaching the critical temperature from above, and we qualitatively derive the temperature dependence of this enhancement for various cases. In addition, we present numerical results for two concrete experimental systems: i) three-dimensional cold atomic Fermi gases close to a Stoner transition and ii) two-dimensional spatially-separated electron and hole systems in semiconductor double quantum wells.

Domain-wall-controlled transverse spin injection

We propose an effect whereby an electric current along the interface between a ferromagnetic and normal metal leads to injection of pure spin current into the normal metal, if the magnetization-direction in the ferromagnet varies along the direction of current. For the specific example of a ferromagnetic domain wall, we compute the inverse spin-Hall effect voltage this spin current gives rise to when injected into a Pt layer. Furthermore, we show that this pure spin current leads to modification of the parameters that govern spin transfer and current-driven domain-wall motion, which can be use to optimize the latter in layered magnetic systems. This effect in principle enables control over the location of spin-current injection in devices.

Topological transport in a spin-orbit coupled bosonic Mott insulator

We investigate topological transport in a spin-orbit coupled bosonic Mott insulator. We show that interactions can lead to anomalous quasi-particle dynamics even when the spin-orbit coupling is abelian. To illustrate the latter, we consider the spin-orbit coupling realized in the experiment of Lin \textit{et al}. [Nature (London) \textbf{471}, 83 (2011)]. For this spin-orbit coupling, we compute the quasiparticle dispersions and spectral weights, the interaction-induced momentum space Berry curvature, and the momentum space distribution of spin density, and propose experimental signatures. Furthermore, we find that in our approximation for the single-particle propagator, the ground state can in principle support an integer Hall conductivity if the sum of the Chern numbers of the hole bands is nonzero.
