Depth Development of Extensive Air Showers from Muon Time Distributions

We develop a potential algorithm to relate the depth development of ultra high energy extensive air showers and the time delay for individual muons. The time distributions sampled at different positions at ground level by a large air shower array are converted into distributions of production distances using an approximate relation between production distance, transverse distance and time delay. The method is naturally restricted to inclined showers where muons dominate the signal at ground level but could be extended to vertical showers provided that the detectors used can separate the muon signal from electrons and photons. We explore the accuracy and practical uncertainties involved in the proposed method. For practical purposes only the muons that fall outside the central region of the shower can be used, and we establish cuts in transverse distance. The method is tested using simulated showers by comparing the production distance distributions obtained using the method with the actual distances in the simulated showers. It could be applied in the search of neutrinos to increase the acceptance to highly penetrating particles, as well as for unraveling the relative compositions of protons and heavy nuclei. We also illustrate that the obtained depth distributions have minimum width when both the arrival direction and the core position are well reconstructed.

Collective behavior in nuclear interactions and shower development

The mechanism of hadronic interactions at very high energies is still unclear. Available accelerator data constrain weakly the forward rapidity region which determines the development of atmospheric showers. This ignorance is one of the main sources of uncertainty in the determination of the energy and composition of the primary in hadron-induced atmospheric showers. In this paper we examine the effect on the shower development of two kinds of collective effects in high-energy hadronic interactions which modify the production of secondary particles. The first mechanism, modeled as string fusion, affects strongly the central rapidity region but only slightly the forward region and is shown to have very little effect on the shower development. The second mechanism implies a very strong stopping; it affects modestly the profile of shower maximum but broadens considerably the number distribution of muons at ground. For the latter mechanism, the development of air showers is faster mimicking a heavier projectile. On the other hand, the number of muons at ground is lowered, resembling a shower generated by a lighter primary.

Tests and applications of Migdal's particle path-integral representation for the Dirac Propagator

We derive some non-perturbative results in 1+1 and 2+1 dimensions within the context of the particle path-integral representation for a Dirac field propagator in the presence of an external field, in a formulation introduced by Migdal in 1986. We consider the specific properties of the path-integral expressions corresponding to the 1+1 and 2+1 dimensional cases, presenting a derivation of the chiral anomaly in the former and of the Chern-Simons current in the latter. We also discuss particle propagation in constant electromagnetic field backgrounds.

Time Structure of Muonic Showers

An analytical description of the time structure of the pulses induced by muons in air showers at ground level is deduced assuming the production distance distribution for the muons can be obtained elsewhere. The results of this description are compared against those obtained from simulated showers using AIRES. Major contributions to muon time delays are identified and a relation between the time structure and the depth distribution is unveiled.

Sensitivity of the Auger Observatory to ultra high energy photon composition through inclined showers

We report a calculation of the expected rate of inclined air showers induced by ultra high energy cosmic rays to be obtained by the Auger Southern Observatory assuming different mass compositions. We describe some features that can be used to distinguish photons at energies as high as 10$^{20}$ eV. The discrimination of photons at such energies will help to test some models of the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays.

Comparative study of simulations of Cerenkov radio emission from high energy showers in dense media

We compare in detail the results of simulations of electromagnetic showers in ice in the GeV-TeV energy range, using both the GEANT package and the ZHS Monte Carlo, a code specifically designed to calculate coherent Cerenkov radio pulses from electromagnetic showers in dense media. The longitudinal and lateral profiles as well as the tracklengths, and excess tracklengths are shown to agree at the 10% level. We briefly comment on the negligible influence of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect on the total shower tracklength. Our results are relevant for experiments exploiting the radio Cerenkov technique in dense media as well as for other detectors that rely on the Cerenkov effect in water or ice.

The Effect of Non Gaussian Errors on the Determination of Steeply Falling Spectra

The determination of a steeply falling energy spectrum from rare events with non-gaussian measurement errors is a delicate matter. The final shape of the spectrum may be severely distorted as a consequence of non-gaussian tails in the energy resolution of the experiment. We illustrate this effect with the recent experimental efforts to determine the ultra-high energy extreme of the cosmic ray spectrum.

A new approach to inferring the mass composition of cosmic rays at energies above 10^18 eV

We describe a new approach to establishing the mass composition at high energies. Based on measuring both the vertical and inclined shower rates, it has the potential to distinguish heavy nuclei from light nuclei. We apply the method to Haverah Park data above 10^18 eV to show that, under the assumption that the Quark Gluon String Jet Model correctly describes the high energy interactions, the inclined shower measurements favour a light composition at energies above 10^19 eV. The same conclusion is obtained using a variety of assumptions about the cosmic ray spectrum. To the extent that precise spectral measurements will be possible by forthcoming experiments such as the Auger observatories, the method will further constrain data on composition of the ultra high energy cosmic rays.

Constraints on the Ultra High Energy Photon flux using inclined showers from the Haverah Park array

We describe a method to analyse inclined air showers produced by ultra high energy cosmic rays using an analytical description of the muon densities. We report the results obtained using data from inclined events (60^{\circ}<θ<80^{\circ}) recorded by the Haverah Park shower detector for energies above 10^19 eV. Using mass independent knowledge of the UHECR spectrum obtained from vertical air shower measurements and comparing the expected horizontal shower rate to the reported measurements we show that above 10^19 eV less than 48 % of the primary cosmic rays can be photons at the 95 % confidence level and above 4 X 10^19 eV less than 50 % of the cosmic rays can be photonic at the same confidence level. These limits place important constraints on some models of the origin of ultra high-energy cosmic rays.

Modelling Horizontal Air Showers Induced by Cosmic Rays

We present a framework for the study of muon density patterns on the ground due to showers produced in the atmosphere by cosmic rays incident at high zenith angles. As a checking procedure predictions of a model based on such a framework are compared to simulation results.

New constraints from Haverah Park data on the photon and iron fluxes of UHE cosmic rays

Using data from inclined events ($60^{\circ}<θ<80^{\circ}$) recorded by the Haverah Park shower detector, we show that above 10^19 eV less than 30% of the primary cosmic rays can be photons or iron nuclei at the 95% confidence level. Above 4 10^19 eV less than 55% of the cosmic rays can be photonic at the same confidence level. These limits place important constraints on some models of the origin of ultra high energy cosmic rays. Details of two new events above 10^20 eV are reported.

The rate of cosmic ray showers at large zenith angles: a step towards the detection of ultra-high energy neutrinos by the Pierre Auger Observatory

It is anticipated that the Pierre Auger Observatory can be used to detect cosmic neutrinos of >10^19 eV that arrive at very large zenith angles. However showers created by neutrino interactions close to the detector must be picked out against a background of similar events initiated by cosmic ray nuclei. As a step towards understanding this background, we have made the first detailed analysis of air showers recorded at Haverah Park (an array which used similar detectors to those planned for the Auger Observatory) with zenith angles above 60 degs. We find that the differential shower rate from 60 degs to 80 degs. can be predicted accurately when we adopt the known primary energy spectrum above 10^17 eV and assume the QGSJET model and proton primaries. Details of the calculation are given.

SIGNATURES OF CP-VIOLATION IN THE PRESENCE OF MULTIPLE B-PAIR PRODUCTION AT HADRON COLLIDER

We calculate the production of 2 b-quark pairs in hadron collisions. Sources of multiple pairs are multiple interactions and higher order perturbative QCD mechanisms. We subsequently investigate the competing effects of multiple b-pair production on measurements of CP-violation: i) the increase in event rate with multiple b-pair cross sections which may reach values of order 1 barn in the presence of multiple interactions and ii) the dilution of $b$ versus $\bar b$ tagging efficiency because of the presence of events with 4 $B$-mesons. The impact of multiple $B$-meson production is small unless the cross section for producing a single pair exceeds 1~mb. We show that even for larger values of the cross section the competing effects i) and ii) roughly compensate so that there is no loss in the precision with which CP-violating CKM angles can be determined.

Empirical Determination of the Very High Energy Heavy Quark Cross Section from Non-Accelerator Data

To cosmic rays incident near the horizon the Earth's atmosphere represents a beam dump with a slant depth reaching 36000~g~cm$^{-2}$ at $90^\circ$. The prompt decay of a heavy quark produced by very high energy cosmic ray showers will leave an unmistakable signature in this dump. We translate the failure of experiments to detect such a signal into an upper limit on the heavy quark hadroproduction cross section in the energy region beyond existing accelerators. Our results disfavor any rapid growth of the cross section or the gluon structure function beyond very conservative estimates based on perturbative QCD.
