Temporal characterization of individual harmonics of an attosecond pulse train by THz streaking

We report on the global temporal pulse characteristics of individual harmonics in an attosecond pulse train by means of photo-electron streaking in a strong low-frequency transient. The scheme allows direct retrieval of pulse durations and first order chirp of individual harmonics without the need of temporal scanning. The measurements were performed using an intense THz field generated by tilted phase front technique in LiNbO_3 . Pulse properties for harmonics of order 23, 25 and 27 show that the individual pulse durations and linear chirp are decreasing by the harmonic order.

The SLS Beamlines Data Acquisition and Control System

On December 15th the Swiss Light Source (SLS) produced a stored beam for the first time. This important milestone was achieved in a very tight time schedule. The fact that all major systems are controlled by Epics made this challenge feasible. In the first phase there are four beamlines: two for the surface science community, one for powder and surface diffraction and computed micro-tomography, and the last one for protein crystallography. All of them are equipped with insertion devices, which users want to treat as active sub-systems like a monochromator or experimental station. The beamline control systems are based on the same hardware and software technology as is the machine. This implies extensive use of Personal Computers running Linux RedHat 6.2 and VME systems (PowerPC). The advantage of this choice is a staightforward implementation of the insertion devices into the beamline and experiment framework. Although the experiment Application Program Interfaces differ from beamline to beamline, the standard software technology for linking all sub-systems is based on the Epics toolkit and Cdev. The diagnostic tools provided by this toolkit are being extensively used during the beamline commissioning. Finallly we account on some examples of integrating dedicated 3rd party and commercial non Epics software products for experiment control into the beamline control system. Key elements in this domain are CORBA, Python and Portable Channel Access Server.

New Bounds from Searching for Muonium to Antimuonium Conversion

A new upper limit for the probability of spontaneous muonium to antimuonium conversion was established at ${\rm P_{M\bar{M}}} \leq 8.2 \cdot 10^{-11}$ (90%C.L.) in 0.1~T magnetic field, which implies consequences for speculative extensions to the standard model. Coupling parameters in R-parity violating supersymmetry and the mass of a flavour diagonal bileptonic gauge boson can be significantly restricted. A Z$_8$ model with radiative mass generation through heavy lepton seed and the minimal version of 331-GUT models are ruled out.

Improved upper limit on Muonium to Antimuonium Conversion

A new experiment has been set up at the Paul Scherrer Institut to search for muonium to antimuonium conversion. No event was found to fulfil the requested signature which consists of the coincident detection of both constituents of the antiatom in its decay. Assuming an effective (V-A)$\times$(V-A) type interaction an improved upper limit is established for the conversion probability of ${\rm P_{M\bar{M}}} \leq 8 \cdot 10^{-9}$ (90%C.L.), which is almost two orders of magnitude lower compared to previous results and provides a sensitive test for theoretical extensions of the standard model.

Increased Sensitivity to Possible Muonium to Antimuonium Conversion

A new experimental search for muonium-antimuonium conversion was conducted at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Villigen, Switzerland. The preliminary analysis yielded one event fulfilling all required criteria at an expected background of 1.7(2) events due to accidental coincidences. An upper limit for the conversion probability in 0.1 T magnetic field is extracted as $8 \cdot 10^{-11}$ (90% CL).

Results from Searching for Muonium to Antimuonium Conversion

A new result from searching for muonium to antimuonium conversion is reported which sets an upper limit on the coupling constant in an assumed $(V-A) \times (V-A)$ type interaction of $G_{M\bar{M}} \leq 3\cdot 10^{-3} G_F$ ~ (90% C.L.). A particular Z_8 and a minimal 331 GUT model can be ruled out. Further new and stringent limits can be set for masses of bileptonic gauge bosons and $λ$ parameters in R-parity breaking supersymmetric models.
