Excited states of $^{148}$Nd studied via the $^{150}$Nd$(p,t){}^{148}$Nd reaction and the observation of possible low-spin two-phonon octupole states at $N=88$

We report new data from a $^{150}$Nd$(p,t){}^{148}$Nd experiment performed at the John D. Fox Accelerator Laboratory of Florida State University. In total, 54 excited states of $^{148}$Nd were observed up to an excitation energy of 3500 keV. In this work, we focus on $0^+$ states and their band members. In contrast to previous work, the $0^+_3$ band is proposed as the candidate for the two-phonon octupole vibrational band. Supporting $spdf$ IBM-1 calculations are presented. To test the robustness of the IBM calculations, several observables were interrogated and are discussed in this publication. In addition, we make the case that neither the $0^+_2$ nor the $0^+_3$ states of the other $N=88$ isotones are likely good candidates for two-phonon octupole states. Based on our new data for $^{148}$Nd, we propose candidates in $^{150}$Sm and $^{152}$Gd. Using available $\gamma$-decay data for states with moderate spins in the yrast sequence and a comparison to IBM calculations, we also show how the staggering of the $B(E1)/B(E2)$ ratios in the yrast sequence can possibly be used to probe the appearance of bands with multiple octupole phonons.

The ICESPICE demonstrator for particle/$\gamma$-$e^{-}$ coincidence experiments at Florida State University

The Internal Conversion Electron SPectrometer In Coincidence Experiments (ICESPICE) demonstrator has been developed at Florida State University to enable particle/gamma-electron coincidence measurements in low-energy nuclear structure studies. ICESPICE is based on the mini-orange spectrometer concept and features a modular design using commercially available permanent magnets arranged in toroidal configurations to transport internal conversion electrons to room-temperature PIPS detectors while suppressing background from undesired particles. The system was optimized through SolidWorks modeling, COMSOL magnetic field simulations, and Geant4 particle tracking to maximize the magnetic transmission probability for electrons around 1 MeV. Commissioning tests using a calibrated 207Bi source demonstrated the performance of multiple spectrometer-detector configurations. Coincidence measurements between CeBr3 detectors from the CeBrA array and PIPS detectors revealed clear gamma-electron correlations. The first in-beam particle-electron measurements using ICESPICE were performed with the Super-Enge Split-Pole Spectrograph (SE-SPS) in the 208Pb(d,t)207Pb reaction. Prompt coincidences between tritons detected with the SE-SPS and electrons detected with ICESPICE were observed. The presented results show that ICESPICE is a promising ancillary detector system for in-beam internal conversion electron spectroscopy at the FSU SE-SPS.

Experimental study of $^{53}$Cr via the $(d,p\gamma)$ reaction

Excited states in $^{53}$Cr were studied via the $^{52}$Cr$(d,p\gamma)$ reaction up to the neutron-separation threshold. Proton-$\gamma$ angular correlations and $\gamma$ decay branching ratios were measured in particle-$\gamma$ coincidences between the Super-Enge Split-Pole Spectrograph (SE-SPS) and CeBr$_3$ Array (CeBrA) demonstrator of the John D. Fox Accelerator Laboratory at Florida State University. Previous spin-parity assignments from a $(d,p)$ singles experiment at the SE-SPS are supported and $\gamma$-ray transitions in $^{53}$Cr reported. We firmly assign higher-lying excited states to $^{53}$Cr because overlapping excited states and contaminants could be identified better due to the complementary $\gamma$-decay information. We also correct some of the previously reported excitation energies and present a reanalysis of previously measured $^{52}$Cr$(d,p){}^{53}${Cr} angular distributions guided by the complementary $\gamma$-ray information. Based on this reanalysis, the fragmentation of the neutron $2p_{3/2}$, $2p_{1/2}$, $1f_{5/2}$, $1g_{9/2}$, and $2d_{5/2}$ single-particle strengths is reassessed for $^{53}$Cr. A comparison to the corresponding strengths in $^{55}$Fe is presented.

Comparative analysis of C-moments using different phenomenological models

Analysis of normalised C-moments of multiplicity distribution calculated from the different phenomenological models, the Bialas-Praszalowics~(BP) model, modified negative binomial and the superposed SGD at different center of mass~(cms) energies is presented.~The analysis covers a range of energies~(200-900 GeV) of $\bar{p}p$ collisions in restricted phase space slices.~A comparison of different models to the experimental data on charged particle multiplicity spectra from the $\bar{p}p$ annihilation in five pseudorapidity windows is reported.~The comparison shows that the two approaches other than the BP model are in better agreement to the data.~Results on variation of moments with pseudorapidity window size and with center of mass energy and observations from such a study in $\bar{p}p$ annihilation and $pp$ interactions at the same cms energy are also presented.

Single-Neutron Adding on $^{34}$S

Purpose: Single-neutron adding data was collected in order to determine the distribution of the single-neutron strength of the $0f_{7/2}$, $1p_{3/2}$, $1p_{1/2}$ and $0f_{5/2}$ orbitals outside of $Z=16, N=18$, $^{34}$S. Methods: The $^{34}$S($d$,$p$)$^{35}$S reaction has been measured at 8 MeV/u to investigate cross sections to excited states in $^{35}$S. Outgoing proton yields and momenta were analyzed by the Super-Enge Split-Pole Spectrograph in conjunction with the CeBrA demonstrator located at the John D. Fox Laboratory at Florida State University. Angular distributions were compared with Distorted Wave Born Approximation calculations in order to extract single-neutron spectroscopic overlaps. Results: Spectroscopic overlaps and strengths were determined for states in $^{35}$S up through 6 MeV in excitation energy. Each orbital was observed to have fragmented strength where a single level carried the majority. The single-neutron centroids of the $0f_{7/2}$, $1p_{3/2}$, $1p_{1/2}$ and $0f_{5/2}$ orbitals were determined to be $2360^{+90}_{-40}$ keV, $3280^{+80}_{-50}$ keV, $4780^{+60}_{-40}$ keV, and $\gtrsim7500$ keV, respectively. Conclusion: A previous discrepancy in the literature with respect to distribution of the neutron $1p_{1/2}$ strength was resolved. The integration of the normalized spectroscopic strengths, up to 5.1 MeV in excitation energy, revealed fully-vacant occupancies for the $0f_{7/2}$, $1p_{3/2}$, and $1p_{1/2}$ orbitals, as expected. The spacing in the single-neutron energies highlighted a reduction in the traditional $N=28$ shell-gap, relative to both the $1p$ spin-orbit energy difference ($N=32$) and the lower limit on the $N=34$ shell spacing.

The azimuthal correlation between the leading jet and the scattered lepton in deep inelastic scattering at HERA

The azimuthal correlation angle, $\Delta\phi$, between the scattered lepton and the leading jet in deep inelastic $e^{\pm}p$ scattering at HERA has been studied using data collected with the ZEUS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 318 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $326 \;\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$. A measurement of jet cross sections in the laboratory frame was made in a fiducial region corresponding to photon virtuality $10 \;\mathrm{GeV}^2 < Q^2 < 350 \;\mathrm{GeV}^2$, inelasticity $0.04 < y < 0.7$, outgoing lepton energy $E_e > 10 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, lepton polar angle $140^\circ < \theta_e < 180^\circ$, jet transverse momentum $2.5 \;\mathrm{GeV} < p_\mathrm{T,jet} < 30 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, and jet pseudorapidity $-1.5 < \eta_\mathrm{jet} < 1.8$. Jets were reconstructed using the $k_\mathrm{T}$ algorithm with the radius parameter $R = 1$. The leading jet in an event is defined as the jet that carries the highest $p_\mathrm{T,jet}$. Differential cross sections, $d\sigma/d\Delta\phi$, were measured as a function of the azimuthal correlation angle in various ranges of leading-jet transverse momentum, photon virtuality and jet multiplicity. Perturbative calculations at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_{s}^2)$ accuracy successfully describe the data within the fiducial region, although a lower level of agreement is observed near $\Delta\phi \rightarrow \pi$ for events with high jet multiplicity, due to limitations of the perturbative approach in describing soft phenomena in QCD. The data are equally well described by Monte Carlo predictions that supplement leading-order matrix elements with parton showering.

The CeBrA demonstrator for particle-$\gamma$ coincidence experiments at the FSU Super-Enge Split-Pole Spectrograph

We report on a highly selective experimental setup for particle-$\gamma$ coincidence experiments at the Super-Enge Split-Pole Spectrograph (SE-SPS) of the John D. Fox Superconducting Linear Accelerator Laboratory at Florida State University (FSU) using fast CeBr$_3$ scintillators for $\gamma$-ray detection. Specifically, we report on the results of characterization tests for the first five CeBr$_3$ scintillation detectors of the CeBr$_3$ Array (CeBrA) with respect to energy resolution and timing characteristics. We also present results from the first particle-$\gamma$ coincidence experiments successfully performed with the CeBrA demonstrator and the FSU SE-SPS. We show that with the new setup, $\gamma$-decay branching ratios and particle-$\gamma$ angular correlations can be measured very selectively using narrow excitation energy gates, which are possible thanks to the excellent particle energy resolution of the SE-SPS. In addition, we highlight that nuclear level lifetimes in the nanoseconds regime can be determined by measuring the time difference between particle detection with the SE-SPS focal-plane scintillator and $\gamma$-ray detection with the fast CeBrA detectors. Selective excitation energy gates with the SE-SPS exclude any feeding contributions to these lifetimes.

Search for nonextensivity in electron-proton interactions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 300 GeV

Study of canonical entropy in electron-proton interactions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 300 GeV is presented. The precision data collected by the H1 experiment at the HERA in different ranges of invariant hadronic mass $W$ and the squared four-momentum exchange $Q^{2}$ in $ep$ interactions have been analyzed in the ensemble theory approach. The canonical partition function relates to the multiplicity distribution which is often studied in collider experiments. We use the canonical ensemble partition function to explore the dynamics of hadron production in $ep$ interactions by devising different methods to find the entropic parameter and the collision temperature. The inverse slope of the transverse momentum spectrum of produced hadrons also relates to the temperature. In the recent past, the CMS, ATLAS and ALICE experiments at the LHC have studied the charged hadron transverse momentum and particle distributions in proton-proton and proton-nucleus interactions by using the Tsallis function within this approach. A detailed investigation into the role of the system volume and relation amongst different dynamical parameters reveals interesting results.

Measurement of jet production in deep inelastic scattering and NNLO determination of the strong coupling at ZEUS

A new measurement of inclusive-jet cross sections in the Breit frame in neutral current deep inelastic scattering using the ZEUS detector at the HERA collider is presented. The data were taken in the years 2004 to 2007 at a centre-of-mass energy of $318\,\text{GeV}$ and correspond to an integrated luminosity of $347\,\text{pb}^{-1}$. Massless jets, reconstructed using the $k_t$-algorithm in the Breit reference frame, have been measured as a function of the squared momentum transfer, $Q^2$, and the transverse momentum of the jets in the Breit frame, $p_{\perp,\text{Breit}}$. The measured jet cross sections are compared to previous measurements and to perturbative QCD predictions. The measurement has been used in a next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD analysis to perform a simultaneous determination of parton distribution functions of the proton and the strong coupling, resulting in a value of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1142 \pm 0.0017~\text{(experimental/fit)}$ ${}^{+0.0006}_{-0.0007}~\text{(model/parameterisation)}$ ${}^{+0.0006}_{-0.0004}~\text{(scale)}$, whose accuracy is improved compared to similar measurements. In addition, the running of the strong coupling is demonstrated using data obtained at different scales.

Updated Trends in Neutrino-induced hadron production

With four different type of neutrino-induced interactions, we considered to investigate and reanalyse the KNO scaling in modified multiplicity distributions from a different perspective. In an attempt of first of its kind, we propose alternate fitting function to parameterise the distribution than the most widely adopted Slattery's function and compare it with yet another form. We propose the shifted Gompertz and Weibull functions as the fitting functions and compare their potency for the most conventional form of Slattery's function. In addition the analysis of the data by evaluating the central moments and factorial moments, we show the dependence of moments on the target size.

Jet substructure in neutral current deep inelastic e+p scattering at upcoming Electron-Ion Collider

Predictions are made for the jet substructure of one-jet events produced in electron-proton neutral current deep inelastic scattering at the future Electron-Ion Collider for exchanged four-momentum squared, $Q^2 > 125$ GeV$^2$. Data are simulated using Monte Carlo event generators PYTHIA 8.304 and RAPGAP 3.308 at the center of mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 63.2, 104.9 and 141 GeV. Jets and subjets are produced by longitudinally invariant $k_T$ cluster algorithm. The subjet multiplicity distributions and differential jet shapes are measured for different jet sizes and varying jet-resolution parameter. A comparison is presented between the $k_T$ and anti-$k_T$ cluster algorithms for the study of jets and subjets using the simulated data and the HERA data.

Search for effective Lorentz and CPT violation using ZEUS data

Lorentz and CPT symmetry in the quark sector of the Standard Model are studied in the context of an effective field theory using ZEUS $e^{\pm} p$ data. Symmetry-violating effects can lead to time-dependent oscillations of otherwise time-independent observables, including scattering cross sections. An analysis using five years of inclusive neutral-current deep inelastic scattering events corresponding to an integrated HERA luminosity of $372\; \text{pb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 318$ Gev has been performed. No evidence for oscillations in sidereal time has been observed within statistical and systematic uncertainties. Constraints, most for the first time, are placed on 42 coefficients parameterising dominant CPT-even dimension-four and CPT-odd dimension-five spin-independent modifications to the propagation and interaction of light quarks.

Dual Parton Model for the Charged Multiplicity in pp Collisions at 13, 13.6 TeV and for future LHC energy of 27 TeV

Analysis of the charged multiplicity in proton-proton inelastic interactions at the LHC energies in the setting of Dual Parton Model is presented. Data from the CMS experiment and the data simulated at different energies in various pseudo-rapidity windows using the event generator PYTHIA8are analysed and compared with the calculations from the model. Each inelastic scattering is assumed to follow the Poisson distribution. The theoretical Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling of the multiplicity distributions is studied and compared with previously published experimental results at $\sqrt{s}$ = 0.9, 2.36, 7 TeV. Predictions from the model for the KNO distributions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13, 13.6 TeV and for the future LHC energy of 27 TeV are computed and compared with the simulated data.

Measurement of the cross-section ratio $\sigma_{\psi(2S )}/\sigma_{J/\psi(1S )}$ in exclusive photoproduction at HERA

The exclusive photoproduction reactions $\gamma p \to J/\psi(1S) p$ and $\gamma p \to \psi(2S) p$ have been measured at an $ep$ centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 373 pb$^{-1}$. The measurement was made in the kinematic range $30 < W < 180$ GeV, $Q^2 < 1$ GeV$^2$ and $|t| < 1$ GeV$^2$, where $W$ is the photon--proton centre-of-mass energy, $Q^2$ is the photon virtuality and $t$ is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The decay channels used were $J/\psi(1S) \to \mu^+ \mu^-$, $\psi(2S) \to \mu^+ \mu^-$ and $\psi(2S) \to J/\psi(1S) \pi^+ \pi^-$ with subsequent decay $J/\psi(1S) \to \mu^+ \mu^-$. The ratio of the production cross sections, $R = \sigma_{\psi(2S)} / \sigma_{J/\psi(1S)}$, has been measured as a function of $W$ and $|t|$ and compared to previous data in photoproduction and deep inelastic scattering and with predictions of QCD-inspired models of exclusive vector-meson production, which are in reasonable agreement with the data.

Impact of jet-production data on the next-to-next-to-leading-order determination of HERAPDF2.0 parton distributions

The HERAPDF2.0 ensemble of parton distribution functions (PDFs) was introduced in 2015. The final stage is presented, a next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) analysis of the HERA data on inclusive deep inelastic $ep$ scattering together with jet data as published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations. A perturbative QCD fit, simultaneously of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$ and and the PDFs, was performed with the result $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1156 \pm 0.0011~{\rm (exp)}~ ^{+0.0001}_{-0.0002}~ {\rm (model}$ ${\rm +~parameterisation)}~ \pm 0.0029~{\rm (scale)}$. The PDF sets of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO were determined with separate fits using two fixed values of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$, $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)=0.1155$ and $0.118$, since the latter value was already chosen for the published HERAPDF2.0 NNLO analysis based on HERA inclusive DIS data only. The different sets of PDFs are presented, evaluated and compared. The consistency of the PDFs determined with and without the jet data demonstrates the consistency of HERA inclusive and jet-production cross-section data. The inclusion of the jet data reduced the uncertainty on the gluon PDF. Predictions based on the PDFs of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO give an excellent description of the jet-production data used as input.

Azimuthal correlations in photoproduction and deep inelastic $\boldsymbol{ep}$ scattering at HERA

Collective behaviour of final-state hadrons, and multiparton interactions are studied in high-multiplicity $ep$ scattering at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=318$ GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Two- and four-particle azimuthal correlations, as well as multiplicity, transverse momentum, and pseudorapidity distributions for charged-particle multiplicities $N_{\textrm ch} \geq 20$ are measured. The dependence of two-particle correlations on the virtuality of the exchanged photon shows a clear transition from photoproduction to neutral current deep inelastic scattering. For the multiplicities studied, neither the measurements in photoproduction processes nor those in neutral current deep inelastic scattering indicate significant collective behaviour of the kind observed in high-multiplicity hadronic collisions at RHIC and the LHC. Comparisons of PYTHIA predictions with the measurements in photoproduction strongly indicate the presence of multiparton interactions from hadronic fluctuations of the exchanged photon.

Charged particle production in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=8, 7 and 2.76 TeV at the LHC -- a case study

We analyse the charged${\text -}$particle multiplicity distributions measured by the ALICE experiment, over a wide pseudorapidity range, for $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=8,\,7\,and\, 2.76~TeV at the LHC.~The analysis offers an understanding of particle production in high energy collisions in the purview of a new distribution, the shifted Gompertz distribution.~Data are compared with the distribution and moments of the distributions are calculated.~A modified version of the distribution is also proposed and used to improve the description of the data consisting of two different event classes; the inelastic and the non${\text -}$single${\text -}$diffractive and their subsets in different windows of pseudorapidity, $\eta$.~The distribution used to analyse the data has a wide range of applicability to processes in different fields and complements the analysis done by the ALICE collaboration in terms of various LHC event generators and IP-Glasma calculations.

Investigation of particle production in $h{\text -}A$ collisions using statistical distributions

Study of the characteristic properties of charged particle production in hadron-nucleus collisions at high energies, by utilising the approaches from different statistical models is performed.~Predictions from different approaches using the Negative Binomial distribution, shifted Gompertz distribution, Weibull distribution and the Krasznovszky-Wagner distribution are utilised for a comparative study of the relative successes of these models.~These distributions derived from a variety of functional forms are based on either phenomenological parameterizations or some model of the underlying dynamics.~Some of these have have also been used to study the data at the LHC for both proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus collisions.~Various physical and derived observables have been used for the analysis.
