Coupling Nitrogen Vacancy Centers in Diamond to Superconducting Flux Qubits

We propose a method to achieve coherent coupling between Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond and superconducting (SC) flux qubits. The resulting coupling can be used to create a coherent interaction between the spin states of distant NV centers mediated by the flux qubit. Furthermore, the magnetic coupling can be used to achieve a coherent transfer of quantum information between the flux qubit and an ensemble of NV centers. This enables a long-term memory for a SC quantum processor and possibly an interface between SC qubits and light.

Shot noise spectrum of artificial Single Molecule Magnets: measuring spin-relaxation times via the Dicke effect

We investigate theoretically shot noise in an artificial Single Molecule Magnet based upon a CdTe quantum dot doped with a single S=5/2 Mn spin and gated in the hole sector. Mn-hole exchange anisotropy is shown to lead to profound consequences on noise, like super-Poissonian behaviour. We report on a novel effect, similar to the Dicke effect in Quantum Optics, that allows to separately extract the hole and Mn spin relaxation times using frequency-resolved shot noise measurements. We expect that our findings may have further relevance to experiments in other S>1/2 systems including transport through Mn(12) molecules and STM spectroscopy of magnetic atoms.

Optical probing of spin fluctuations of a single magnetic atom

We analyzed the photoluminescence intermittency generated by a single paramagnetic spin localized in an individual semiconductor quantum dot. The statistics of the photons emitted by the quantum dot reflect the quantum fluctuations of the localized spin interacting with the injected carriers. Photon correlation measurements which are reported here reveal unique signatures of these fluctuations. A phenomenological model is proposed to quantitatively describe these observations, allowing a measurement of the spin dynamics of an individual magnetic atom at zero magnetic field. These results demonstrate the existence of an efficient spin relaxation channel arising from a spin-exchange with individual carriers surrounding the quantum dot. A theoretical description of a spin-flip mechanism involving spin exchange with surrounding carriers gives relaxation times in good agreement with the measured dynamics.

Frequency-dependent counting statistics in interacting nanoscale conductors

We present a formalism to calculate finite-frequency current correlations in interacting nanoscale conductors. We work within the n-resolved density matrix approach and obtain a multi-time cumulant generating function that provides the fluctuation statistics, solely from the spectral decomposition of the Liouvillian. We apply the method to the frequency-dependent third cumulant of the current through a single resonant level and through a double quantum dot. Our results, which show that deviations from Poissonian behaviour strongly depend on frequency, demonstrate the importance of finite-frequency higher-order cumulants in fully characterizing interactions.

Entanglement between charge qubits induced by a common dissipative environment

We study entanglement generation between two charge qubits due to the strong coupling with a common bosonic environment (Ohmic bath). The coupling to the boson bath is a source of both quantum noise (leading to decoherence) and an indirect interaction between qubits. As a result, two effects compete as a function of the coupling strength with the bath: entanglement generation and charge localization induced by the bath. These two competing effects lead to a non-monotonic behavior of the concurrence as a function of the coupling strength with the bath. As an application, we present results for charge qubits based on double quantum dots.

Single Electron Transport in electrically tunable nanomagnets

We study a single electron transistor (SET) based upon a II-VI semiconductor quantum dot doped with a single Mn ion. We present evidence that this system behaves like a quantum nanomagnet whose total spin and magnetic anisotropy depend dramatically both on the number of carriers and their orbital nature. Thereby, the magnetic properties of the nanomagnet can be controlled electrically. Conversely, the electrical properties of this SET depend on the quantum state of the Mn spin, giving rise to spin-dependent charging energies and hysteresis in the Coulomb blockade oscillations of the linear conductance.

Anisotropic magnetoresistance in single electron transport

We study the effect of magnetic anisotropy in a single electron transistor with ferromagnetic electrodes and a non-magnetic island. We identify the variation $δμ$ of the chemical potential of the electrodes as a function of the magnetization orientation as a key quantity that permits to tune the electrical properties of the device. Different effects occur depending on the relative size of $δμ$ and the charging energy. We provide preliminary quantitative estimates of $δμ$ using a very simple toy model for the electrodes.

Removing spin blockade by photon-assisted tunneling in double quantum dots

Pauli exclusion principle can lead to a supression of transport through double quantum dots, even if both quantum dots are connected by a resonant driving ac field. In this work, we study how this effect, known as spin blockade, can be removed by means of the influence of the driving field on the contacts to the leads.

Non-equilibrium Entanglement and Noise in Coupled Qubits

We study charge entanglement in two Coulomb-coupled double quantum dots in thermal equilibrium and under stationary non-equilibrium transport conditions. In the transport regime, the entanglement exhibits a clear switching threshold and various limits due to suppression of tunneling by Quantum Zeno localisation or by an interaction induced energy gap. We also calculate quantum noise spectra and discuss the inter-dot current correlation as an indicator of the entanglement in transport experiments.

Charge Transport Through Open, Driven Two-Level Systems with Dissipation

We derive a Floquet-like formalism to calculate the stationary average current through an AC driven double quantum dot in presence of dissipation. The method allows us to take into account arbitrary coupling strengths both of a time-dependent field and a bosonic environment. We numerical evaluate a truncation scheme and compare with analytical, perturbative results such as the Tien-Gordon formula.

Shot Noise Spectrum of Open Dissipative Quantum Two-level Systems

We study the current noise spectrum of qubits under transport conditions in a dissipative bosonic environment. We combine (non-)Markovian master equations with correlation functions in Laplace-space to derive a noise formula for both weak and strong coupling to the bath. The coherence-induced reduction of noise is diminished by weak dissipation and/or a large level separation (bias). For weak dissipation, we demonstrate that the dephasing and relaxation rates of the two-level system can be extracted from noise. In the strong dissipation regime, the localisation-delocalisation transition becomes visible in the low-frequency noise.

Dielectric Function of Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors in the Infrared Regime

We present a study of the dielectric function of metallic (III,Mn)V diluted magnetic semiconductors in the infrared regime. Our theoretical approach is based on the kinetic exchange model for carrier induced (III,Mn)V ferromagnetism. The dielectric function is calculated within the random phase approximation and, within this metallic regime, we treat disorder effects perturbatively and thermal effects within the mean field approximation. We also discuss the implications of this calculations on carrier concentration measurements from the optical f-sum rule and the analysis of plasmon-phonon coupled modes in Raman spectra.

Spontaneous Emission Spectrum in Double Quantum Dot Devices

A double quantum dot device is a tunable two-level system for electronic energy states. A dc electron current directly measures the rates for elastic and inelastic transitions between the two levels. For inelastic transitions energy is exchanged with bosonic degrees of freedom in the environment. The inelastic transition rates are well described by the Einstein coefficients, relating absorption with stimulated and spontaneous emission. The most effectively coupled bosons in the specific environment of our semiconductor device are acoustic phonons. The experiments demonstrate the importance of vacuum fluctuations in the environment for little circuits of coherent quantum devices.

Magnetic Field Induced Charge Instabilities in Weakly Coupled Superlattices

Using a time dependent selfconsistent model for vertical sequential tunneling,we study the appearance of charge instabilities that lead to the formation of electric field domains in a weakly coupled doped superlattice in the presence of high magnetic fields parallel to the transport direction. The interplay between the high non linearity of the system --coming from the Coulomb interaction-- and the inter-Landau-level scattering at the domain walls (regions of charge accumulation inside the superlattice) gives rise to new unstable negative differential conductance regions and extra stable branches in the sawtooth-like I-V curves.

Photon Assisted Electric Field Domains in Semiconductor Doped Superlattices

We study photon-assisted tunneling (PAT) through weakly-coupled doped semiconductor superlattices (SL's) in the high voltage regime. A self-consistent model which treats the Coulomb interaction in a mean field approximation is considered. We discuss the formation of electric field domains in the presence of THz radiation and the appearance of new multistability regions caused by the combined effect of the strong non linearity coming from the Coulomb interaction and the new PAT channels. We show how the electric field domains can be supported by the virtual photonic sidebands due to multiple photon emission and absorption.

Coherent resonant tunneling in ac fields

We have analyzed the tunneling transmission probability and electronic current density through resonant heterostructures in the presence of an external electromagnetic field. In this work, we compare two different models for a double barrier : In the first case the effect of the external field is taken into account by spatially dependent AC voltages and in the second one the electromagnetic field is described in terms of a photon field that irradiates homogeneously the whole sample. While in the first description the tunneling takes place mainly through photo sidebands in the case of homogeneous illumination the main effective tunneling channels correspond to the coupling between different electronic states due to photon absorption and emission. The difference of tunneling mechanisms between these configurations is strongly reflected in the transmission and current density which present very different features in both cases. In order to analyze these effects we have obtained, within the Transfer Hamiltonian framework, a general expression for the transition probability for coherent resonant tunneling in terms of the Green's function of the system.
