Second-order bulk-surface splitting for the wave equation with kinetic boundary conditions

This paper is devoted to the numerical analysis of a second-order bulk--surface splitting scheme for the semi-linear wave equation with kinetic boundary conditions. The construction is based on the interpretation of the equations as coupled system and the implementation of different difference formulae for the discrete states depending on their exact position in the system equations. This results in a 4-step scheme which decouples bulk and surface dynamics. We prove energy stability and second-order convergence under a weak CFL condition and validate these results also numerically.

Three-term recurrence iterations for energy-based models

It is well-known that the midpoint rule preserves the dissipation inequality if applied to a certain class of energy-based models. We introduce an appropriate scaling of the state variables such that the symmetric part of the resulting iteration matrix is guaranteed to be positive definite. This allows the application of three-term iteration schemes such as the methods of Widlund and Rapoport. Special emphasis is put on examples where the symmetric part is block diagonal such that the computations decouple. This then leads to efficient dissipation-preserving numerical schemes as illustrated in two numerical examples, namely the biharmonic heat equation and linear poroelasticity.

Semi-explicit time discretization for linear thermo-poroelasticity

Within this paper, we introduce partially and fully decoupled time stepping schemes for linear thermo-poroelasticity. This means that the mechanics, heat, and flow equations can be solved sequentially. We provide sufficient conditions on the material parameters, which can be checked a priori, guaranteeing first-order convergence of the introduced schemes. Hence, the proposed methods have the same order as the implicit Euler scheme but are computationally more efficient due to the decoupling of the system equations. Numerical examples validate the proven convergence results and analyze the sharpness of the mentioned parameter condition. Further, we compare the schemes with other decoupling schemes from the literature.

An implicit-explicit BDF-Galerkin scheme of second order for the nonlinear thermistor problem

This paper proposes and analyzes an implicit-explicit BDF-Galerkin scheme of second order for the time-dependent nonlinear thermistor problem. For this, we combine the second-order backward differentiation formula with special extrapolation terms for time discretization with standard finite elements for spatial discretization. Unconditionally superclose and superconvergent error estimates are established, relying on two key techniques. First, a time-discrete system is introduced to decompose the error function into its temporal and spatial components. Second, superclose error estimates between the numerical solution and the interpolation of the time-discrete solution are employed to effectively handle the nonlinear coupling term. Finally, we present numerical examples that validate the theoretical findings, demonstrating the unconditional stability and the second-order accuracy of the proposed method.

Gautschi-type and implicit-explicit integrators for constrained wave equations

This paper deals with the construction and analysis of two integrators for (semi-linear) second-order partial differential-algebraic equations of semi-explicit type. More precisely, we consider an implicit-explicit Crank-Nicolson scheme as well as an exponential integrator of Gautschi type. For this, well-known wave integrators for unconstrained systems are combined with techniques known from the field of differential-algebraic equations. This results in efficient time stepping schemes that are provable of second order. Moreover, we discuss the practical implementation of the Gautschi-type method, which involves the solution of certain saddle point problems. The theoretical results are verified by a numerical experiment for the wave equation with kinetic boundary conditions.

Riemannian optimisation methods for ground states of multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates

This paper addresses the computation of ground states of multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates, defined as the global minimiser of an energy functional on an infinite-dimensional generalised oblique manifold. We establish the existence of the ground state, prove its uniqueness up to scaling, and characterise it as the solution to a coupled nonlinear eigenvector problem. By equipping the manifold with several Riemannian metrics, we introduce a suite of Riemannian gradient descent and Riemannian Newton methods. Metrics that incorporate first- or second-order information about the energy are particularly advantageous, effectively preconditioning the resulting methods. For a Riemannian gradient descent method with an energy-adaptive metric, we provide a qualitative global and quantitative local convergence analysis, confirming its reliability and robustness with respect to the choice of the spatial discretisation. Numerical experiments highlight the computational efficiency of both the Riemannian gradient descent and Newton methods.

A novel energy-based modeling framework

We introduce an energy-based model, which seems especially suited for constrained systems. The proposed model provides an alternative to the popular port-Hamiltonian framework and exhibits similar properties such as energy dissipation as well as structure-preserving interconnection and Petrov-Galerkin projection. In terms of time discretization, the midpoint rule and discrete gradient methods are dissipation-preserving. Besides the verification of these properties, we present ten examples from different fields of application.

Probabilistic time integration for semi-explicit PDAEs

This paper deals with the application of probabilistic time integration methods to semi-explicit partial differential-algebraic equations of parabolic type and its semi-discrete counterparts, namely semi-explicit differential-algebraic equations of index 2. The proposed methods iteratively construct a probability distribution over the solution of deterministic problems, enhancing the information obtained from the numerical simulation. Within this paper, we examine the efficacy of the randomized versions of the implicit Euler method, the midpoint scheme, and exponential integrators of first and second order. By demonstrating the consistency and convergence properties of these solvers, we illustrate their utility in capturing the sensitivity of the solution to numerical errors. Our analysis establishes the theoretical validity of randomized time integration for constrained systems and offers insights into the calibration of probabilistic integrators for practical applications.

A second-order iterative time integration scheme for linear poroelasticity

We propose a novel time stepping method for linear poroelasticity by extending a recent iterative decoupling approach to the second-order case. This results in a two-step scheme with an inner iteration and a relaxation step. We prove second-order convergence for a prescribed number of inner iteration steps, only depending on the coupling strength of the elastic and the flow equation. The efficiency of the scheme is illustrated by a number of numerical experiments, including a simulation of three-dimensional brain tissue.

Riemannian Newton methods for energy minimization problems of Kohn-Sham type

This paper is devoted to the numerical solution of constrained energy minimization problems arising in computational physics and chemistry such as the Gross-Pitaevskii and Kohn-Sham models. In particular, we introduce the Riemannian Newton methods on the infinite-dimensional Stiefel and Grassmann manifolds. We study the geometry of these two manifolds, its impact on the Newton algorithms, and present expressions of the Riemannian Hessians in the infinite-dimensional setting, which are suitable for variational spatial discretizations. A series of numerical experiments illustrates the performance of the methods and demonstrates its supremacy compared to other well-established schemes such as the self-consistent field iteration and gradient descent schemes.

A novel iterative time integration scheme for linear poroelasticity

Within this paper, we introduce and analyze a novel time stepping scheme for linear poroelasticity. In each time frame, we iteratively solve the flow and mechanics equations with an additional damping step for the pressure variable. Depending on the coupling strength of the two equations, we explicitly quantify the needed number of inner iteration steps to guarantee first-order convergence. Within a number of numerical experiments, we confirm the theoretical results and study the dependence of inner iteration steps in terms of the coupling strength. Moreover, we compare our method to the well-known fixed-stress scheme.

A second-order bulk--surface splitting for parabolic problems with dynamic boundary conditions

This paper introduces a novel approach for the construction of bulk--surface splitting schemes for semi-linear parabolic partial differential equations with dynamic boundary conditions. The proposed construction is based on a reformulation of the system as a partial differential--algebraic equation and the inclusion of certain delay terms for the decoupling. To obtain a fully discrete scheme, the splitting approach is combined with finite elements in space and a BDF discretization in time. Within this paper, we focus on the second-order case, resulting in a $3$-step scheme. We prove second-order convergence under the assumption of a weak CFL-type condition and confirm the theoretical findings by numerical experiments. Moreover, we illustrate the potential for higher-order splitting schemes numerically.

Semi-explicit integration of second order for weakly coupled poroelasticity

We introduce a semi-explicit time-stepping scheme of second order for linear poroelasticity satisfying a weak coupling condition. Here, semi-explicit means that the system, which needs to be solved in each step, decouples and hence improves the computational efficiency. The construction and the convergence proof are based on the connection to a differential equation with two time delays, namely one and two times the step size. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical results and indicate the applicability to higher-order schemes.

Dissipation-preserving discretization of the Cahn--Hilliard equation with dynamic boundary conditions

This paper deals with time stepping schemes for the Cahn--Hilliard equation with three different types of dynamic boundary conditions. The proposed schemes of first and second order are mass-conservative and energy-dissipative and -- as they are based on a formulation as a coupled system of partial differential equations -- allow different spatial discretizations in the bulk and on the boundary. The latter enables refinements on the boundary without an adaptation of the mesh in the interior of the domain. The resulting computational gain is illustrated in numerical experiments.
