Sensing of single nuclear spins in random thermal motion with proximate nitrogen-vacancy centers

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have emerged as valuable tools for sensing and polarizing spins. Motivated by potential applications in chemistry, biology, and medicine, we show that NV-based sensors are capable of detecting single spin targets even if they undergo diffusive motion in an ambient thermal environment. Focusing on experimentally relevant diffusion regimes, we derive an effective model for the NV-target interaction, where parameters entering the model are obtained from numerical simulations of the target motion. The practicality of our approach is demonstrated by analyzing two realistic experimental scenarios: (i) time-resolved sensing of a fluorine nuclear spin bound to an N-heterocyclic carbene-ruthenium (NHC-Ru) catalyst that is immobilized on the diamond surface and (ii) detection of an electron spin label by an NV center in a nanodiamond, both attached to a vibrating chemokine receptor in thermal motion. We find in particular that the detachment of a fluorine target from the NHC-Ru carrier molecule can be monitored with a time resolution of a few seconds.

A spatial-correlation analysis of the cubic 3-torus topology based on the Planck 2013 data

Spatial correlations of the cubic 3-torus topology are analysed using the Planck 2013 data. The spatial-correlation method for detecting multiply connected spaces is based on the fact that positions on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) sky, that are separated by large angular distances, can be spatially much nearer according to a hypothesized topology. The comparison of the correlations computed with and without the assumed topology can reveal whether a promising topological candidate is found. The level of the expected correlations is estimated by CMB simulations of the cubic 3-torus topology and compared to those obtained from the Planck data. An interesting 3-torus configuration is discovered which possesses topological correlations of the magnitude found in the CMB simulations based on a toroidal universe. Although the spatial-correlation method has a high false-positive rate, it is striking that there exists an orientation of a cubic 3-torus cell, where correlations between points that are separated by large angular distances, mimic those of closely separated points.

How well-proportioned are lens and prism spaces?

The CMB anisotropies in spherical 3-spaces with a non-trivial topology are analysed with a focus on lens and prism shaped fundamental cells. The conjecture is tested that well proportioned spaces lead to a suppression of large-scale anisotropies according to the observed cosmic microwave background (CMB). The focus is put on lens spaces L(p,q) which are supposed to be oddly proportioned. However, there are inhomogeneous lens spaces whose shape of the Voronoi domain depends on the position of the observer within the manifold. Such manifolds possess no fixed measure of well-proportioned and allow a predestined test of the well-proportioned conjecture. Topologies having the same Voronoi domain are shown to possess distinct CMB statistics which thus provide a counter-example to the well-proportioned conjecture. The CMB properties are analysed in terms of cyclic subgroups Z_p, and new point of view for the superior behaviour of the Poincaré dodecahedron is found.

CMB radiation in an inhomogeneous spherical space

We analyse the CMB radiation in spherical 3-spaces with non-trivial topology. The focus is put on an inhomogeneous space which possesses observer dependent CMB properties. The suppression of the CMB anisotropies on large angular scales is analysed with respect to the position of the CMB observer. The equivalence of a lens space with a Platonic cubic space is shown and used for the harmonic analysis. We give the transformation of the CMB multipole radiation amplitude as a function of the position of the observer. General sum rules are obtained in terms of the squares of the expansion coefficients for invariant polynomials on the 3-sphere.

Cosmic microwave anisotropies in an inhomogeneous compact flat universe

The anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are computed for the half-turn space E_2 which represents a compact flat model of the Universe, i.e. one with finite volume. This model is inhomogeneous in the sense that the statistical properties of the CMB depend on the position of the observer within the fundamental cell. It is shown that the half-turn space describes the observed CMB anisotropies on large scales better than the concordance model with infinite volume. For most observer positions it matches the temperature correlation function even slightly better than the well studied 3-torus topology.

Can one reconstruct masked CMB sky?

The CMB maps obtained by observations always possess domains which have to be masked due to severe uncertainties with respect to the genuine CMB signal. Cosmological analyses ideally use full CMB maps in order to get e.g. the angular power spectrum. There are attempts to reconstruct the masked regions at least at low resolutions, i.e. at large angular scales, before a further analysis follows. In this paper, the quality of the reconstruction is investigated for the ILC (7yr) map as well as for 1000 CMB simulations of the LambdaCDM concordance model. The latter allows an error estimation for the reconstruction algorithm which reveals some drawbacks. The analysis points to errors of the order of a significant fraction of the mean temperature fluctuation of the CMB. The temperature 2-point correlation function C(theta) is evaluated for different reconstructed sky maps which leads to the conclusion that it is safest to compute it on the cut-sky.

Hot pixel contamination in the CMB correlation function?

Recently, it was suggested that the map-making procedure, which is applied to the time-ordered CMB data by the WMAP team, might be flawed by hot pixels. This could lead to a bias in the pixels having an angular distance of about 141 degrees from hot pixels due to the differential measuring process of the satellite WMAP. Here, the bias is confirmed, and the temperature two-point correlation function C(theta) is reevaluated by excluding the affected pixels. It is shown that the most significant effect occurs in C(theta) at the largest angles near theta = 180 degrees. Furthermore, the corrected correlation function C(theta) is applied to the cubic topology of the Universe, and it is found that such a multi-connected universe matches the temperature correlation better than the LCDM concordance model, provided the cubic length scale is close to L=4 measured in units of the Hubble length.

CMB Alignment in Multi-Connected Universes

The low multipoles of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy possess some strange properties like the alignment of the quadrupole and the octopole, and the extreme planarity or the extreme sphericity of some multipoles, respectively. In this paper the CMB anisotropy of several multi-connected space forms is investigated with respect to the maximal angular momentum dispersion and the Maxwellian multipole vectors in order to settle the question whether such spaces can explain the low multipole anomalies in the CMB.

The circles-in-the-sky signature for three spherical universes

The mysteriously low CMB power on the largest scales might point to a Universe which consists of a multi-connected space. In addition to a suppression of large-scale power, a multi-connected space can be revealed by its circles-in-the-sky signature. In this paper, a detailed search for this signature is carried out for those three homogeneous multi-connected spherical space forms that lead to the smallest large-scale power. A simultaneous search for all occurring paired circles is made using filtered CMB sky maps which enhance the ordinary Sachs-Wolfe contribution. A marginal hint is found for the right-handed Poincare dodecahedron at Omega_tot = 1.015 and for the right-handed binary tetrahedral space at Omega_tot = 1.068. However, due to the complicated noise and foreground structure of the available microwave sky maps, we cannot draw firm conclusions from our findings.

CMB Anisotropy of Spherical Spaces

The first-year WMAP data taken at their face value hint that the Universe might be slightly positively curved and therefore necessarily finite, since all spherical (Clifford-Klein) space forms M^3 = S^3/Gamma, given by the quotient of S^3 by a group Gamma of covering transformations, possess this property. We examine the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) for all typical groups Gamma corresponding to homogeneous universes. The CMB angular power spectrum and the temperature correlation function are computed for the homogeneous spaces as a function of the total energy density parameter Omega_tot in the large range [1.01, 1.20] and are compared with the WMAP data. We find that out of the infinitely many homogeneous spaces only the three corresponding to the binary dihedral group T*, the binary octahedral group O*, and the binary icosahedral group I* are in agreement with the WMAP observations. Furthermore, if Omega_tot is restricted to the interval [1.00, 1.04], the space described by T* is excluded since it requires a value of Omega_tot which is probably too large being in the range [1.06, 1.07]. We thus conclude that there remain only the two homogeneous spherical spaces S^3/O* and S^3/I* with Omega_tot of about 1.038 and 1.018, respectively, as possible topologies for our Universe.

CMB Anisotropy of the Poincare Dodecahedron

We analyse the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) for the Poincare dodecahedron which is an example for a multi-connected spherical universe. We compare the temperature correlation function and the angular power spectrum for the Poincare dodecahedral universe with the first-year WMAP data and find that this multi-connected universe can explain the surprisingly low CMB anisotropy on large scales found by WMAP provided that the total energy density parameter Omega_tot is in the range 1.016...1.020. The ensemble average over the primordial perturbations is assumed to be the scale-invariant Harrison-Zel'dovich spectrum. The circles-in-the-sky signature is studied and it is found that the signal of the six pairs of matched circles could be missed by current analyses of CMB sky maps.

Can one hear the shape of the Universe?

It is shown that the recent observations of NASA's explorer mission "Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe" (WMAP) hint that our Universe may possess a non-trivial topology. As an example we discuss the Picard space which is stretched out into an infinitely long horn but with finite volume.

Quintessence and the Curvature of the Universe after WMAP

We study quintessence models with a constant (effective) equation of state. It is investigated whether such quintessence models are consistent with a negative spatial curvature of the Universe with respect to the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation measured by the WMAP mission. If the reionization is negligibly small, it is found that such models with negative curvature are admissible due to a geometrical degeneracy. However, a very high optical depth tau to the surface of last scattering, as indicated by the polarization measurements of WMAP, would rule out such models.

Quintessence with a constant equation of state in hyperbolic universes

Quintessence models leading to a constant equation of state are studied in hyperbolic universes. General properties of the quintessence potentials V(phi) are discussed, and for some special cases also the exact analytic expressions for these potentials are derived. It is shown that the observed angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is in excellent agreement with some of the quintessence models even in cases with negative curvature. It is emphasized that due to a (w_phi, Omega_phi, Omega_c)-degeneracy a universe with negative spatial curvature cannot be excluded.

Dark Energy in a Hyperbolic Universe

Dark energy models due to a slowly evolving scalar (quintessence) field $ϕ$ are studied for various potentials $V(ϕ)$ in a universe with negative curvature. The potentials differ in whether they possess a minimum at $ϕ=0$ or are monotonically declining, i.e. have a minimum at infinity. The angular power spectrum $C_l$ of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) as well as the magnitude-redshift relation $m_B(z)$ of the type Ia supernovae are compared with the quintessence models. It is demonstrated that some of the models with $Ω_tot \simeq 0.85...0.9$ are in agreement with the observations, i.e. possess acoustic peaks in the angular power spectrum of the CMB anisotropy as observed experimentally, and yield a magnitude-redshift relation in agreement with the data. Furthermore, it is found that the power spectrum $P(k)$ of the large-scale structure (LSS) agrees with the observations too.

The Cosmic Microwave Background for a Nearly Flat Compact Hyperbolic Universe

The fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are investigated for a hyperbolic universe with finite volume. Four-component models with radiation, matter, vacuum energy, and an extra spatially constant dark energy X-component are considered. The general solution of the Friedmann equation for the cosmic scale factor a(eta) is given for the four-component models in terms of the Weierstrass P-function. The lower part of the angular power spectra C_l of the CMB anisotropy is computed for nearly flat models with Omega_tot <= 0.95. It is shown that the particular compact fundamental cell, which is considered in this paper, leads to a suppression in C_l for l<10 and Omega_tot <= 0.9.

On the Rate of Quantum Ergodicity on hyperbolic Surfaces and Billiards

The rate of quantum ergodicity is studied for three strongly chaotic (Anosov) systems. The quantal eigenfunctions on a compact Riemannian surface of genus g=2 and of two triangular billiards on a surface of constant negative curvature are investigated. One of the triangular billiards belongs to the class of arithmetic systems. There are no peculiarities observed in the arithmetic system concerning the rate of quantum ergodicity. This contrasts to the peculiar behaviour with respect to the statistical properties of the quantal levels. It is demonstrated that the rate of quantum ergodicity in the three considered systems fits well with the known upper and lower bounds. Furthermore, Sarnak's conjecture about quantum unique ergodicity for hyperbolic surfaces is confirmed numerically in these three systems.
