The Origin and Evolution of Cosmic Magnetism

Magnetism is one of the four fundamental forces. However, the origin of magnetic fields in stars, galaxies and clusters is an open problem in astrophysics and fundamental physics. When and how were the first fields generated? Are present-day magnetic fields a result of dynamo action, or do they represent persistent primordial magnetism? What role do magnetic fields play in turbulence, cosmic ray acceleration and galaxy formation? Here we demonstrate how the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) can deliver new data which will directly address these currently unanswered issues. Much of what we present is based on an all-sky survey of rotation measures, in which Faraday rotation towards >10^7 background sources will provide a dense grid for probing magnetism in the Milky Way, in nearby galaxies, and in distant galaxies, clusters and protogalaxies. Using these data, we can map out the evolution of magnetised structures from redshifts z>3 to the present, can distinguish between different origins for seed magnetic fields in galaxies, and can develop a detailed model of the magnetic field geometry of the intergalactic medium and of the overall Universe. With the unprecedented capabilities of the SKA, the window to the Magnetic Universe can finally be opened.

Photoproduction of eta-mesic 3He

The photoproduction of eta-mesic 3He has been investigated using the TAPS calorimeter at the Mainz Microtron accelerator facility MAMI. The total inclusive cross section for the reaction gamma+3He->eta+X has been measured for photon energies from threshold to 820 MeV. The total and angular differential coherent eta cross sections have been extracted up to energies of 745 MeV. A resonance-like structure just above the eta production threshold with an isotropic angular distribution suggests the existence of a resonant quasi-bound state. This is supported by studies of a competing decay channel of such a quasi-bound eta-mesic nucleus into pi^0+p+X. A binding energy of (-4.4+-4.2) MeV and a width of (25.6+-6.1) MeV is deduced for the quasi-bound eta-mesic state in 3He.

Photoproduction of pi0-mesons from nuclei

Photoproduction of neutral pions from nuclei (carbon, calcium, niobium, lead) has been studied for incident photon energies from 200 MeV to 800 MeV with the TAPS detector using the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer at the Mainz MAMI accelerator. Data were obtained for the inclusive photoproduction of neutral pions and the partial channels of quasifree single pi0, double pi0, and pi0pi+/- photoproduction. They have been analyzed in terms of the in-medium behavior of nucleon resonances and the pion - nucleus interaction. They are compared to earlier measurements from the deuteron and to the predictions of a Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) transport model for photon induced pion production from nuclei.

Magnetic fields in barred galaxies III: The southern peculiar galaxy NGC 2442

Observations of the southern peculiar galaxy NGC 2442 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array in total and linearly polarized radio continuum at 6cm are presented and compared with previously obtained H$α$ data. The distribution of polarized emission, a signature of regular magnetic fields, reveals some physical phenomena which are unusual among spiral galaxies. We find evidence for tidal interaction and/or ram pressure from the intergalactic medium compressing the magnetic field at the northern and western edges of the galaxy. The radial component of the regular magnetic field in the northern arm is directed away from the centre of the galaxy, a finding which is in contrast to the majority of galaxies studied to date. The oval distortion caused by the interaction generates a sudden jump of the magnetic field pattern upstream of the inner northern spiral arm, similar to galaxies with long bars. An unusual ``island'' of strong regular magnetic field east of the galaxy is probably the brightest part of a magnetic arm frequently seen in spiral galaxies, which appear to be phase-shifted images of the preceding optical arm. The strong magnetic field of the ``island'' indicates a past phase of active star formation when the preceding optical arm was exposed to ram pressure.

Radio continuum observations of the Virgo cluster spiral NGC 4522 The signature of ram pressure

Radio continuum observations at 20 and 6 cm of the highly inclined Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4522 are presented. Both, 20 and 6 cm total emission distributions are asymmetric with an extended component to the west where extraplanar atomic gas and Halpha emission are found. The 6 cm polarized emission is located at the eastern edge of the galactic disk. Its peak is located about 1 kpc to the east of the total emission peak. We argue that this phenomena is a characteristic feature for cluster galaxies which are experiencing significant pressure from the intracluster medium. The degree of polarization decreases from the east to the west. The flattest spectral index between 20 and 6 cm coincides with the peak of the 6 cm polarized emission. These findings are consistent with a picture of a large scale shock due to ram pressure located at the east of the galaxy where cosmic rays are accelerated. We conclude that it is likely that the galaxy experiences active ram pressure.

Double $π^0$ Photoproduction off the Proton at Threshold

The reaction $γp \to π^0 π^0 p$ has been measured using the TAPS BaF$_2$ calorimeter at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz Microtron accelerator. Chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) predicts that close to threshold this channel is significantly enhanced compared to double pion final states with charged pions. In contrast to other reaction channels, the lower order tree terms are strongly suppressed in 2$π^0$ photoproduction. The consequence is the dominance of pion loops in the 2$π^0$ channel close to threshold - a result that opens new prospects for the test of ChPT and in particular its inherent loop terms. The present measurement is the first which is sensitive enough for a conclusive comparison with the ChPT calculation and is in agreement with its prediction. The data also show good agreement with a calculation in the unitary chiral approach.

Quasi-free $π^0$ Photoproduction from the Bound Nucleon

Differential cross-sections for quasi-free $π^0$ photoproduction from the proton and neutron bound in the deuteron have been measured for $E_γ= 200 - 400$ MeV at $θ^{\rm lab}_γ= 136.2^\circ$ usind the Glasgow photon tagger at MAMI, the Mainz 48 cm $\varnothing$ $\times$ 64 cm NaI(Tl) photon detector and the Göttingen SENECA recoil detector. For the proton measurements made with both liquid deuterium and liquid hydrogen targets allow direct comparison of "free" $π^0$ photoproduction cross-sections as extracted from the bound proton data with experimental free cross sections which are found to be in reasonable agreement below 320 MeV. At higher energies the "free" cross sections extracted from quasifree data are significantly smaller than the experimental free cross sections and theoretical predictions based on multipole analysis. For the first time, "free" neutron cross sections have been extracted in the $Δ$-region. They are also in agreement with the predictions from multipole analysis up to 320 MeV and significantly smaller at higher photon energies.

The magnetic field of M31 from multi-wavelength radio polarization observations

The configuration of the regular magnetic field in M31 is deduced from radio polarization observations at the wavelengths 6, 11 and 20 cm. By fitting the observed azimuthal distribution of polarization angles, we find that the regular magnetic field, averaged over scales 1--3 kpc, is almost perfectly axisymmetric in the radial range 8 to 14 kpc, and follows a spiral pattern with pitch angles of $p\simeq -19\degr$ to $p\simeq -8\degr$. In the ring between 6 and 8 kpc a perturbation of the dominant axisymmetric mode may be present, having the azimuthal wave number m=2. A systematic analysis of the observed depolarization allows us to identify the main mechanism for wavelength dependent depolarization -- Faraday rotation measure gradients arising in a magneto-ionic screen above the synchrotron disk. Modelling of the depolarization leads to constraints on the relative scale heights of the thermal and synchrotron emitting layers in M31; the thermal layer is found to be up to three times thicker than the synchrotron disk. The regular magnetic field must be coherent over a vertical scale at least similar to the scale height of the thermal layer, estimated to be $h\therm\simeq 1$ kpc. Faraday effects offer a powerful method to detect thick magneto-ionic disks or halos around spiral galaxies.

Magnetic Fields and Ionized Gas in the Local Group Irregular Galaxies IC10 and NGC6822

We performed a high-sensitivity search for galaxy-scale magnetic fields by radio polarimetry at 10.45GHz and 4.85GHz with the Effelsberg 100m radio telescope, accompanied by Halpha imaging, for the two Local Group irregular galaxies IC10 and NGC6822. Their star-forming bodies are small and rotate slowly. IC10 is known to have a very high star-forming activity, resembling blue compact dwarfs, while NGC6822 has a low overall star-formation level. Despite very different current star formation rates, our Halpha imaging revealed a large web of diffuse Halpha filaments and shells in both IC10 and NGC6822. Some of them extend far away from the galaxy's main body. The total power emission of both objects shows bright peaks either at the positions of optically strong star-forming clumps (IC10) or individual HII regions or supernova remnants (NGC6822). However, in both cases we detect a smoothly distributed, extended component. In IC10 we found clear evidence for the presence of a diffuse, mostly random magnetic field of ~14muG strength, probably generated by a fluctuation dynamo. One of the Halpha-emitting filaments appears to be associated with enhanced magnetic fields. We also rediscuss the reddening of IC10 and its implications for its distance. In the case of NGC6822 we found only very weak evidence for nonthermal emission, except perhaps for some regions associated with local gas compression. We detect in both galaxies small spots of polarized emission, indicative of regular fields (~3muG), at least partly associated with local compressional phenomena.

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of a-axis YBa_2Cu_3O_7-δfilms:k-selectivity and the shape of the superconductor

Tunneling spectroscopy of epitaxial (100) oriented \chem{YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}} films was performed using an STM at 4.2 K. On atomically smooth areas, tunneling spectra revealing clear U-shaped gaps with relatively low zero bias conductance were measured. These spectra can be well fitted to the tunneling theory into a d-wave superconductor only when introducing a strong dependence of the tunneling probability on the wave-vector \emph{\textbf{k}}. Possible origins for this \emph{\textbf{k}}-selectivity in STM measurements will be discussed. On other areas, V-shaped gaps as well as zero bias conductance peaks are observed, indicating relaxation of \emph{\textbf{k}}-selectivity and the effect of nanofaceting, respectively.

Nascent starbursts in synchrotron-deficient galaxies with hot dust

Three nearby galaxies which have abnormally high infrared to radio continuum ratios, NGC 1377, IC 1953 and NGC 4491, are investigated with a view to understanding the physical origin of their peculiarity. We review the existing data and present new radio continuum measurements along with near-infrared integral-field spectroscopy and molecular gas observations. The three galaxies have low luminosities but starburst-like infrared colors; in NGC 1377, no synchrotron emission is detected at any wavelength; in IC 1953, the observed synchrotron component is attributable to the spiral disk alone, and is lacking in the central regions; the radio spectrum of NGC 4491 is unusually flat. We also compare and contrast them with NGC 4418, a heavily extinguished galaxy which shares some attributes with them. After examining various scenarios, we conclude that these galaxies are most likely observed within a few Myr of the onset of an intense star formation episode after being quiescent for at least ~ 100 Myr. This starburst, while heating the dust, has not produced optical signatures nor a normal amount of cosmic rays yet. We briefly discuss the statistics of such galaxies and what they imply for star formation surveys.

Threshold enhancement in eta photoproduction from 2H and 4He

The photoproduction of eta-mesons from 2H and 4He has been studied for energies close to the production thresholds. The experiments were carried out with the tagged photon beam of the Mainz MAMI accelerator. The eta-mesons were detected via their two photon decays with the electromagnetic calorimeter TAPS. Total cross sections, angular and momentum distributions of the eta-mesons have been determined for both reactions. The total cross sections in the threshold region show a large enhancement over the predictions of a participant - spectator model, indicating significant final state interaction effects. The results are compared to recent model calculations taking into account nucleon-nucleon and nucleon-eta final state interaction effects on different levels of sophistication.

Exclusive measurement of coherent eta photoproduction from the deuteron

Coherent photoproduction of eta mesons from the deuteron has been measured from threshold up to incident photon energies of 750 MeV using the photon spectrometer TAPS at the tagged photon facility at the Mainz microtron MAMI. For the first time, differential coherent cross sections have been deduced from the coincident detection of the eta meson and the recoil deuteron. A missing energy analysis was used for the suppression of background events so that a very clean identification of coherent eta-photoproduction was achieved. The resulting cross sections agree with previous experimental results except for angles around 90 deg in the photon-deuteron cm-system where they are smaller. They are compared to various model calculations.

Coherent pi0-photoproduction from atomic nuclei

Differential and total cross sections for coherent pi0-photoproduction from 12C, 40Ca, 93Nb and Pb targets have been measured throughout the region of the Delta(1232)-resonance. The experiments were performed with the TAPS-detector at the Mainz accelerator MAMI. The characteristic proportionality of the cross section to the square of the atomic mass number and to the nuclear mass form factor is clearly demonstrated. The data allow for the first time detailed tests of model predictions for this reaction. The comparison of the data to model predictions shows that the Delta-nucleus interaction saturates: it is described for heavy nuclei with the same potential parameters as for 4He.

In-medium properties of the D13(1520) nucleon resonance

The in-medium properties of the D13(1520) nucleon resonance were studied via photoproduction of pi0-mesons from nuclei (C, Ca, Nb, Pb) with the TAPS-detector at the Mainz MAMI accelerator. The inclusive (single and multiple pion production) data disagree with model predictions which explain the disappearance of the second resonance bump in total photoabsorption via a medium modification of the D13 --> N rho decay. The exclusive single pi0 production data show no broadening of the resonance structure beyond Fermi smearing. Although due to final state interaction effects pion production tests the nucleus at densities less than the average nuclear density, both results together cast doubt on attempts to explain the vanishing of the second resonance bump for heavy nuclei by a broadening of the D13-resonance in nuclear matter.

Quasi-free Compton Scattering and the Polarizabilities of the Neutron

Differential cross sections for quasi-free Compton scattering from the proton and neutron bound in the deuteron have been measured using the Glasgow/Mainz tagging spectrometer at the Mainz MAMI accelerator together with the Mainz 48 cm $\oslash$ $\times$ 64 cm NaI(Tl) photon detector and the Göttingen SENECA recoil detector. The data cover photon energies ranging from 200 MeV to 400 MeV at $θ^{LAB}_γ=136.2^\circ$. Liquid deuterium and hydrogen targets allowed direct comparison of free and quasi-free scattering from the proton. The neutron detection efficiency of the SENECA detector was measured via the reaction $p(γ,π^+ n)$. The "free" proton Compton scattering cross sections extracted from the bound proton data are in reasonable agreement with those for the free proton which gives confidence in the method to extract the differential cross section for free scattering from quasi-free data. Differential cross sections on the free neutron have been extracted and the difference of the electromagnetic polarizabilities of the neutron have been obtained to be $α-β= 9.8\pm 3.6(stat){}^{2.1}_1.1(syst)\pm 2.2(model)$ in units $10^{-4}fm^3$. In combination with the polarizability sum $α+β=15.2\pm 0.5$ deduced from photoabsorption data, the neutron electric and magnetic polarizabilities, $α_n=12.5\pm 1.8(stat){}^{+1.1}_{-0.6}\pm 1.1(model)$ and $β_n=2.7\mp 1.8(stat){}^{+0.6}_{-1.1}(syst)\mp 1.1(model)$ are obtained. The backward spin polarizability of the neutron was determined to be $γ^{(n)}_π=(58.6\pm 4.0)\times 10^{-4}fm^4$.

Order parameter node removal in the d-wave superconductor $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-x}$ under magnetic field

hether the node in the order parameter characteristic of a $d-wave$ superconductor can or cannot be removed by an applied magnetic field has been a subject of debate in recent years. Thermal conductivity results on the high Tc superconductor $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8}$ originally explained by Laughlin in terms of such a node removal were complicated by hysteresis effects, and judged inconclusive. We present new tunneling data on $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-x}$ that support the existence of the node removal effect, under specific orientations of the sample's surfaces and magnetic field. We also explain the hysteretic behavior and other previous tunneling results so far not understood satisfactorily, attributing them to a combination of node removal and Doppler shift of low energy surface bound states.

Three-nucleon mechanisms in photoreactions

The $^{12}$C$(γ,ppn)$ reaction has been measured for E$_γ$=150-800 MeV in the first study of this reaction in a target heavier than $^3$He. The experimental data are compared to a microscopic many body calculation. The model, which predicts that the largest contribution to the reaction arises from final state interactions following an initial pion production process, overestimates the measured cross sections and there are strong indications that the overestimate arises in this two-step process. The selection of suitable kinematic conditions strongly suppresses this two-step contribution leaving cross sections in which up to half the yield is predicted to arise from the absorption of the photon on three interacting nucleons and which agree with the model. The results indicate $(γ,3N)$ measurements on nuclei may be a valuable tool for obtaining information on the nuclear three-body interaction.
